Songs of Sappho, Final Scene
Excerpt and credits from a New York Greek Drama Company production and film of Sappho's poetry with music by Eve Beglarian, directed by Peter Steadman in 1987, Starring Andrea Goodman as Sappho (all the other credits are in the video). Sappho was a teacher of young women as well as famous poet and musician. This is an imagining of her world on the island of Lesbos in the 7th century BCE.

    Sappho never said that or did those things you ignorant decadent idiots. She was a real woman with no abnormalities. Lies propagated on purpose. Lesbian was the name of a Roman patrician woman who had relations with women and it stuck. No proof just lies so you can feel good about your sickness. Also, Sappho commuted suicide because of a man. Homosexuality in Greece was banned by law and they would kill the homosexuals. Keep the holy Greeks out your filthy mouths.

    For those who aren't aware: The poem allegedly talks about Sappho's love for another woman, mentioning her jealousy of a man sitting next to said woman. Though there is a lot of debate about this, Most people think its about that.

    I don't understand why this video doesn't have a few thousand more views, or several hundred more likes. This is a beautiful (and passionate!) rendition of one of Sappho's best works. Thank you for bringing this out into the world. This makes the modern world a better place, just to know that Art exists, Art is being created, Art is being remembered and recalled into existence!

    The title should be spelled Phainetai, since the first letter is a phi and not a pi.

    These renditions of Sappho's music are stunning... and I am very happy that they appear to use the correct rhythm, pronunciation, mustical modes and instrumentation of the period...

    What language is it ? Cause if it is ancient greek me that is from greece i didnt understand a thing. This isnt ancient greek ..

      Είναι Ειρήνη...είναι η αρχαία αττική διάλεκτος του χρύσου αιώνα. Δεν μας μαθαίνουν στο σχολείο καν την υπαρξή της, αλλά σε όλα τα άλλα πανεπιστήμια του κόσμο (σχεδόν) τα αρχαία ελληνικά διδάσκονται με αυτή την προφορά. Αν έχεις απορίες μπορώ να σου εξηγήσω πως περίπου τα προέφεραν

      This is Aeolic Ancient Greek, pronounced with the reconstructed pronunciation for Sappho's time.

      @@nevaehhamilton3493yup! she’s talking about getting lovesick over a girl in this poem and she mentions sensual experiences with women as well, she was definitely attracted to women. The term lesbian originated from her.

    This recording from 1970 might also interest you. Ant. K. Lavdas composition, using ancient Greek modes and sung with an approximation of the correct pronunciation, for voice and ancient Greek guitar.       *φωνεί- σας The last line shouldn't be there, since it's not sung and is actually by the author who quoted this poem in his work "On the Sublime", not by Sappho.

    Dear Andrea Goodman, Most and greatest thnks for you. I am a 77years old Japanese man. And I had been learning Classical Greek,and greek philosophy , mainly Socratese,Plato and Aristotle, and Homeric Greek, moreover Koine by which the New Testament written in a national univercity for about ten years over half a century ago.In those days there are no Dictionary about Cllasic Greek written in Japanese.I had to use Dictionary printed in Oxford Univercity, and all the text books printed in England, Frace and Germany.You gave me old dreams and hopes, and remind me of the years when having many dream and hope I had been doing my best efforts.     This video reminds me of the time when I were learning Classical Greek, especially Plato, Aristotle,and Socrates.Adding these I were learning Odusseia of Homer.That time had passed away over half acentury, but I was a young dreaming man.
