On this episode of Project86, Brad buys his dream budget sports car - which breaks down almost IMMEDIATELY.
After winning $10,000 by beating out Trav in the MoneyShift series, Brad settled on a 2013 Scion FRS - infact, the cheapest clean title FRS in the nation!
It's a little rough around the edges, but it's an IDEAL platform for the guys to teach us all about how cars work, how to fix and repair them, how to modify and improve a car, and if things go to plan - build it into something truly special.
In this episode Brad buys the car, experiences a breakdown, gets it towed back to the garage and while Trav inspects the new purchase Brad goes over some of the other cars that were considered for the channel.
Lastly, we see a quick inspection of what exactly the guys ended up with, and answer the question... Can they get it started again?

I think it needs an Alternator, and Great Choies. Though, if you plan on Turbo ( which I don't recommend, i wouldn't ) mount it as far away from the engine and Transmission as possible. 👨🏻👍🏻🏎️🏁🚩 Great win! Brad
I’m using AutoTempest right now, and it turns up quite a few examples of tough to find ones.
I would have got a Fiat 500
@@AM562 Enjoy the Blown Head Gasket after 6 months of ownership... especially if you live on Narrow hills for easy maneuverability 👨🏻👍🏻🏎🏎🏁🏁🚩🚩⛰⛰🌲🌲 I would never buy anything Turbo, Front Wheel drive, Korean .. Been there done that.. Only Toyota in 2024 worth buying is the Trueno GR86.
i will never sell My 2022 Roush Mustang, even if Offered $1 Million Cash USA
it being broke down doesn’t seem that…ideal… 😂😂😂
Definitely not! Still trying to figure out what happened. Stay tuned!
@@IdealMediaChannel Hope everything works out!
Oof
I don't like car drama, so I avoid Subaru products.
@@IdealMediaChannel
Alternator, Test it by giving it a Jump, then it's both the Battery and Alternator.
Trav showing up with a land rover to pick up a toyota is just genius 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Let's be real here, with all their problems they're just Subarus. Not toyotas 😂
Yeah! He saved the day! Surprised it didn't break down on the way back to the shop!
@@IdealMediaChannel 🤣🤣🤣🤣 that trav magic needs to be put to work getting the lottery numbers
For the record- that is a Subie 😂
These series seem pretty fun!!
Get ready to have some fun riding shotgun!
I know right!
So glad to see ‘That Honorable Mention Baby!’ make a comeback!
Ohh.. it's coming back in 2024 baby!
@@IdealMediaChannel I honestly used to think it was cringe at first. But, as the old saying goes…. You don’t know what you got ‘till it’s gone… glad to see your catchphrase making a comeback Brad! Keep up the good work and get that ToyoBaru back on the road brotha! Cheers🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻
Please do more videos like these !! This was amazing even the sponsor segment was great !
Cool vid! I have that same car year and color. When is the followup vid comin?
They are such fun little cars!
This week! Stay tuned!
Nice. I picked up a brz 2015 series blue 2 weeks ago. Signed up for a thunderhill track day already for early April.
Nice! Maybe we'll see you out there!
I have a 2013 Toyota 86, and it has been relatively hassle free. I love the car
Sweet! any mods?
Just TRD quad tailpiece, 18 inch Rotiform wheels and a big wing
You bought an FRS!!! I have 2 months and 2 days left until I make my choice.
If I can find a daily/Canadian winter car, I'll also look for an FRS/86/BRZ.
I'm curious if these can make more power with something like better cooling and a supercharger.
PLEASE make a guide for us as you improve and mod it. Nowadays I really need an affordable fun car, as I'm sadly saying goodbye to my 500hp Audi A6. I will miss it so much but need to save money for a couple of years.
Yeah I can guarantee you'll be happy with an 86. This car is WAY TOO MUCH FUN especially for the price!
This sort of reminds me of the 40day road trip! You’re making the challenge with vehicles an adventure. Take us along with you!
Maybe we should do a 40 day road trip in this thing! haha
Get ready to ride shot gun on all the adventures this car has ahead of it!
Dude hell yeah, congrajulayshuns on your new baby! haha. I had 3 rod knocks in a recalled Scion FRS after Toyota tried fixing it, covered under warranty, then eventually I got another one haha Toyota 86 TRD Special Edition tho I love it!!
So sick! Congrats on the TRD Special!
@@IdealMediaChannel thank you big pimpin!! 👏🏼
This should be fun. Continue to share the journey.
the rip inthe seat isnt a cigarette burn, it is a seat cushion band to move the seat forwards and backwards. I know because I pulled on mine too hard and ripped it, creating a similar hole
I enjoyed this and look forward to the next video on this car! :) I love the scion frs/86/brz and I can’t wait to see this one get fixed up.
Awesome! Thanks for watching!
Ideal is really stepping it up!
Lego!
I owned a 2013 Scion Fr s for 3 years . I had so much fun with the car . I started having problems with the motor when i got 88,000 miles with a internal engine knock .
The Fr s ran good no check engine light . Even if you stay on top of the maintenace its no guarantee that engine will hold up . The Fr s boxer motor is not cheap .
Great info! Were you able to get it fixed?
No . The recall for the valve springs was done by the dealer . All recommended services done . my wife struggled getting in and out of the car
and my wife really did not like the Fr s . I sold the Fr s in October . I replaced the Fr s with a used Acura Rdx .
I avoided having the valve
spring recall done. There’s more issues with them blowing up after having it done than not. 158k miles on mine and still a blast to drive.
I bought a rebuilt title. I’ve owned it for 3 years and I’ve kept up with my maintenance and it hasn’t left on the side of the road
Scion, Toyota 86, Subaru brz =same thing 😂
Good o,l trav to the rescue ❤
Sold my 2013 frs anniversary edition for about $8k in end of 2019 see what the market it is now blows my mind 😮
Excellent! I’m also looking for a 1st gen FRS/86/BRZ as a dedicated track car. So this series is right on time!
I would’ve chosen the Cobra, even if it’s a convertible. The power is already there so all you’d have to do is suspension work, tires, brakes, and appearance mods.
Goodluck doing sparks and coils if you don’t drop the engine or unbolt the engine mounts, I would just pull motor and replace the chains, the front plate adhesive that tends to wear out, etc
Great info! You've worked on these cars before?
@@IdealMediaChannel yup, I have one 😭
Its crazy to think I've been watching Ideal for so long. If i remember right it was around 25k subs when i did. now im just really busy so i cant watch as often.
Thanks for the continued support!
Might have been able to score a Toyota X-Runner. That would be awesome!
I have an frs. And I luv it!
Have you done any mods to it?
Not yet. I would like to add a turbo tho
ls swap it its actually really easy they have kits for cheap. I know from experience i still have the blown fu in the a20 subaru flat 4motor in my garage.
LS would be great... but hoping we can turbo instead of just toss more displacement at it
@@IdealMediaChannelyou’ll blow the engine unless you build it. It’s already a high compression engine and it can’t really take much more on stock internals. Some headers, exhaust and a tune can get rid of the torque dip.
Something else obviously those frs etc love to caboom the engine around 100k miles sometimes earlier, you should have gotten a tl type s manual
hopefully this one doesn't! fingers crossed!
158k and still going strong.
Think I beat you, snagged one with only 27k miles for 9250! To be fair mine is salvaged. Excited to see what you do with it.
Should have gone with the Mitsubishi 3000GT, with some looking you could have found a VR4 for around your 10k mark with a standard transmission. That 3000 is still a sexy car...
3000 is definitely Ideal! Maybe for the next buy!
@IdealMediaChannel I always thought that the 3000 GT VR4 was a tuners dream car, it included an electronically-controlled suspension as well as other features such as anti-lock brakes and automatic climate control, it had the DOHC 24v V6 Twin Turbo and came with permanent 4-wheel drive, 4-wheel steering, limited-slip differential, active aerodynamics and came with Z rated 18-inch chrome wheels with 245/40 tires. The VR4 included a six-speed Getrag manual transmission with revised gear ratios. I'd shoot for the 94' model year because the tunable exhaust was phased out after 1994 model year, the ECS after 1995 model year, and the active aerodynamics disappeared after 1996.
Seriously though, for 1994 this car was punching WAY above it's weight class. Even against the Nissan Skyline GT-R in the 0 to 100 mph the Skyline was faster by about a second. In the 1/4 mile the 3000 did it in 13.8 seconds to the Skyline's 13.3 however the 3000 had a top speed of 162mph to the Skylines 146! I think the biggest thing to remember is the 3000 had a curb weight of 3763lbs to the Skylines 3263lbs. To keep those times that close despite being 500lbs heavier is epic for 1994! Lets be honest, for most of the 3000 GT VR4's specs in 1994 it was one of the most technologically advanced cars on the road at the time yet never seemed to get the love and respect it deserved.
Good for you WHATEVER
This choice is what I suggested in the last video.
And valve cover leak is common with the fa20… so … oil starvation the cause of the engine dying?
Heck ya! We havent figured out why it isn't running... yet!
@@IdealMediaChannel i had a fully modded FRS that was a Sema booth car… ruclips.net/video/kW78WC5GVlg/видео.htmlsi=fbACURoqUgmzipwQ
Change the PCV valve every 15k and that’ll go a long ways. They’re known to gum up and that leads to unnecessary internal pressure which can cause the engine to burn oil and even seep from the timing cover.
Change the oil every 3k if driven hard. Put the right filter on it - avoid the Subaru blue filters - made by Fram. Go with Toyota Denso, or better yet, Subaru made in Japan. WIX or Napa gold if not using oem. The pressure relief valve is rated at 30psi and most filters aren’t properly spec’d.
This is gonna be a fun one… ☝️
LETS GO!
G35/350Z shell
Junkyard LS3
T56 transmission
Where that puts you at?
Sounds like an ideal project car!
FRS/BRZ shell is a much better fit for an LS3 swap
I have been saying it for a while, and for the amount of time that I’ve been saying it you could of imported a 98 Toyota century for 7-10k and they are relatively easy to maintain, except if you have ECU problems but that’s really rare, due to the nature of the cars they are always in great shape.
Definitely something we'll look into in the future! Thanks for all the info!
I saw a display engine Friday at Harrop Performance Centre in Melbourne Australia BRZ/GT86 boxer with a supercharger kit that’s 220kw ( 295hp) at the wheels ……
Too far away yes but idea is good nonetheless
Do you have any more details on that build?
Looks like the previous owner of the FRS used the Ideal Car Selling strategy on you my friend
If it's a cheap fix I still think I came out ahead :)
If I would had gotten a gt86 it would’ve been a shell to swap a k series into it
Is that pretty tough to do?
@@IdealMediaChannelnot necessarily. It’s kinda costly. You’ll want to upgrade the transmission if you want to make over 300whp. A lot of people have K swapped these. Honda reliability, fun, rwd and great looks.
"Broke down" with the camera perfectly staged outside along the road?
Yeah we had to get that footage from a person walking their dog. Still trying to figure out how a toyota could break down!
@@IdealMediaChannelbcuz it’s a Subaru :)
How convenient that a camera was placed, focused at that EXACT spot and that you were able to pull the video, for your car to die right there...
Here's the thing about the Toyotas: They are very reliable and really good vehicules on most of their lineup. But if you buy one that has some milage, that was beaten and was really really abused and not maintained (hum hum no service record), things can go south very quickly and you're in for a really bad and expensive experience. They are not unfixabled, but it can be an money pit depending on the abuse. Good video and good luck with that car!
The more to fix the more content we can make with it! Stay tuned!
Yeah that’s just about any car man
It’s a Subaru
@@stevef3521 Yes it is sir, and it's not a bad thing for both of them. Very common to have these collabs. Both can learn from each other, of course if they want to. Thanks for posting!
@@FullTimeGTyeah. Toyota has learned and it’s rumored they’ll be parting ways with Subaru on the GR86. I love my frs, but would feel better with a Toyota engine in it. That being said, I’m at 158k miles all original. Fun little cars!
Crown Vic with a manual swap and a upgraded LSDiff
An older Infinity sedan with the 3.7 V6 less likely to be abused
sn-95 cobra for the win
reliable as hell parts are cheap and plentiful wont cost much to get 500 hp out of that motor
On the short list of cars I'd love to own.. but loving this FRS for now!
I need to know about and used chrysalis pacifica
Put a k series in it
Well I would have got a 09 SS (S/C) or (T/C) cobalt I have a 09 LS coupe 2.2 oil squirters 200k runs like a new car had to replace , flex pipe , thermo , cv axles , front window , tenting , sliver tip exhaust , tires , next steering u joint ,
Definitely an ideal car!
2008 G37s Coupe with a 6 speed. Oh I did that.
What about the RX7?
Should’ve went with the cobra bro.
Is that a more ideal pick?
I think so but that’s just me. Don’t get me wrong, y’all got a cool car but the cobra would have that sweet v8 sound!
@@IdealMediaChannelsold my new edge GT, got an frs. No regrets. Mustang handling is less than ideal and the manual is sloppy. It was good for burnouts but that’s about it.
Why not a C5 corvette?
I have a 2016 frs. Same color.
I would have bought an RX8
Plus I heard those Boxster engines that they put the FRS BRZ and 86 were really underpowered and not very reliable

Haha yes yes you can!
I would go with the opel vectra i500 for 4000$ and spend the rest5500$ for repair and tunning
I would’ve bought the salvaged title 350z, or g37coupe.
What happened to Brad's R8?
Sold it about a year and a half ago. Now it's time to build an FRS!
You should've bought a 06 S55 AMG. That's what I'm saving up for. 10G's could've gotten you one.
With all due respect you have no business buying a mid 2000's merc. They are extremely unreliable extremely expensive to repair. Seriously don't trap yourself
Lol @Idealmediachannel
Why? The best sport car for 10k is a ford t bucket.
When the launched the toy sub it wasnt turbo because WRX cost more.
Was a way for subaru to shift unsold N/A motors.
I got a volvo s60 2.5 t awd ..06
I dare you to RB widebody that thang 🔥
Double dare?
@@IdealMediaChannel wdym by that? If that means another dare, then twin turbo that little beast 🔥
Dare for the future:
Buy a cheap GR Yaris from somewhere, RB widebody it, and also twin turbo that thing. I wanna see it finished cuz it's my dream car! But, finish the Scion first, and do this only if you have spare time! LY Vids Man 💕
There's a reason Toyota cut ties with Subaru on producing the next GR86, even Toyota has had it with Subarus crap engines.
This!

I would have bought a Chevrolet S10, S10 Blazer, or Astrovan over a Scion FRS. At least with my 3 choices, they are more useful.
Next time you should buy an ap2 s2k and make a video on it 😂
That would be elit!
N54 335 would've been a much better choice
Would've got a B6 S4 possibly B7
A very near virgin (2nd owner) 1990 240sx 5 speed fastback in black.

Definitely an engine swap is required. Inline 4 perhaps or v6. I wouldn't touch another boxer 4.
We're hopefully not going to find out the hard way. For now the engine stays... but more HP is necessary!
Many cant drive stick anymore
These fortunately come in both flavors for all to enjoy!
It need a lot of work to handle properly especially if big sticky tires are installed; coilovers, adjustable swaybars, suspension arms (almost all of them) and most importantly a true LSD, OEM Torsen is pure trash, very unstable.
BUY W210 MB OM606 300TD
Should of picked up a genesis coupe or a G37 🤷🏼♂️
If it's an easy fix I'll be pretty happy with this pick up!
I wouldn't have bought that. That's for sure!
What would you have got?
I would have bought a 2010 cobalt ss
They do look good but they are slow! I take acceleration over RWD!
Slow car fast baby!
@@IdealMediaChannel the FRS, in my opinion, is simply under powered. Seeing as how the flat 4 Subaru engine powering it does come turbocharged in other models, they absolutely should have at least made a turbo version. Or if they really didn't want to boost it, they make a 6 cylinder too!
I believe the other 2.0 turbo Subarus have different internals. Want to say rocker arms, and maybe the block. Also, with the turbo, it would throw off the weight distribution and they wanted to make a raw, N/A sports car. Paying respect to the AE86.
Where is *’RUclips Girlfriend’?* I haven’t heard from her or have seen her at all???
I guess they are havin a baby😅
😂 aren't 1st gen FRS/BRZ/86 known for shitty subaru boxer headgasket issues? And piss poor reliability?

😂 Way to go will be with the retractable hard top. Just like the RF is the way to go with the NDs.
@@IdealMediaChannel After few hours of thinking, you guys can do what I would do to an FR-S. And is a 3S-GTR or BEAMS engine swap, since the G16 engine is probably too expensive to get still. Remember, the Castrol Supra used a 3S-GTE engine!!
Would have waited to find a Z🤣
Ehh.. maybe for the next one!
GR86 for under ten thousand? Say it ain't so...
