@@billycrawford4453 I messed up. Paid 2300 for training. Received poor training imo in a crap vehicle which led me to fail 2 tests.
I'm now throwing good money after bad trying to get something to show for my investment.
More training with a different instructor (who is good) and more costs for another test.
Paid 600 for additional training which instructor said I didn't really need because I was up to standard. I still think I got robbed in second test but that's a different story.
Costs about 300 each time you fail for another test.
In a car test it will cost you about 100 per test so you can afford to keep taking tests and wing it.
I regret doing it and if I don't pass by the time my theory runs out in a few months I'm going to put it down to experience and pretend I had a gambling habit that I've recovered from.

The answer is simple. There is no driver shortage!!

  • @pauljames2407
    @pauljames2407 11 месяцев назад +18

I can tell you there is no shortage in my area West Midlands.
If you look on all the major job sites 90% of the jobs are agency & most of these have there books crammed with drivers.
I know why people are leaving it’s actually a rubbish job to do.
I see HGV class one jobs advertised for as little as £11.00 an hour isn’t minimum wage £10.43 now , most warehouse jobs with no experience or qualifications pay over £11.00 an hour.
The main reasons as I see it is money & time & benifits
    1. Money as of today there are 6 jobs on one of these jobs sites for trampers eg nights out all week , so 4 to 5 of nights or days sleeping in the truck away from home & your family. Either stopping in lay-bys with no wash or toilet facilities or on a noisy motorway services with dirty toilets & showers with very expensive & rubbish food.
And for this privilege the rates of pay range from £12.50 per hour to £13.50 per house plus a average of £20.00 to £25.00 for each night out. So for spending the whole week away from your family , friends & your home you earn an extra £80.00 to £100.00 a week.
This is a pittance for spending all those nights away from home sleeping in a truck.
Then there’s your working hours , you don’t really have any control of them , you start time everyday is decided by what you need legally , it can vary everyday & so can your finish time.
Also your daily hours can vary depending on your delivery’s & collections it’s out of your control. You can work anything from just 8 hours to 15 hours & none of it is your choice.
So for just £12.50 an hour you get to lose any life in the week. The only way you make decent money is if you do 60 plus hours a week.
How many jobs out there were your start times change everyday ?
How many jobs out there also give you no choice if you do 8 hours or 15 hours in that day ? It’s not like you can just pull up on 12 hours & say your going home.
    Then there are the conditions
Truck services food & facilities are rubbish & expensive , a coffee will cost you £3.00 plus & a stale sandwich will cost you £5.00.
Trucks driver are at a very high risk of heart attacks , strokes & bad backs from all the driving , shifts that they work takes years off your life & then there the stress of driving for 4 hour somewhere without stopping because you could miss the window time & your load would get rejected.
It’s not all about money , but £12.50 an hour for the privilege of varying someone’s start times & finish times is a disgrace.
Truckers have a high rate of divorce too all because of no home life.
You can’t make plans or appointments as most jobs don’t tell you what you are doing the next day to you finish your shift the that day.
Everybody thinks driving a Hgv is easy.
But I tell you it’s not wait till you get given a vague address or they close the motor way because of an accident & you need to find away around & you have a 16” 4 trailer on the back.
Or you get to a deliver place & you could t swing a cat round in there.
It’s not easy yes you can only drive up to 4h 30mins in one stretch but that tacho only records those mins when your moving I regularly drive for 4 hour without stopping & that journey has actually taken me 5 plus hours without a stop. Then you have just a 45min break & you have the same drive back.
I regularly drive between 40 to 45 hours a week in the truck & working 50 to 60 hour weeks , plus another nearly 10 hours driving to & from work in my car week in week out for the last 20 years plus.
Truck drivers need a massive pay rise & better work conditions plus better benifits eg proper sick pay & a decent pension , not this 3% most company’s put in.
You have no work life balance being a truck driver & you should be paid properly & treated properly for this

Minimum wage is £10.42, I know it’s still “low” compared to some other jobs but most truck drivers earn between £30,000 and £40,000 so it’s not really a low wage. A low wage would equal £24,000

5:00 putting people straight into class 1, IMO is not the most dangerous part of the new rules. It is the fact that an 18 year old can now get a class 1 licence. Years ago the only way anyone under 21 could get a HGV licence was a class 2 that only travelled 50 miles from the depot, usually something like dray wagons, delivering beer.
You need road experience to drive HGV's (time spent behind the wheel).

    • @fasttrackblastback8286
      @fasttrackblastback8286 Год назад +3

Whilst I agree, you won't find many 18yr olds going for it unless they come from a driving background, I.e dad's a trucker etc, and they've been keen to get on the road and absorbing a lot. Still risky tho and I see where you're coming from. I imagine examiners are harsher on younger applicants too.

I don't think there is a shortage as such, as a recently passed class 1 driver, every job i've looked at requires ex amount of experience, this is a massive road block in the system, its all good and well the government put people through their licence only to be met with this experience issue. It needs addressing.

I agree, this is has been a problem for over 40 years in the HGV industry. Best decision I've ever made getting my HGV License. Don't understand all the complaints here. I did Car straight to Class 1. Applied like crazy and within 3 months had about 6-7 offers for assessments in total, including one class 1 role at Tesco's unfortunantly I fluffed the reversing part LOL and didn't get it. Now got a nice Class 2 job mainly driving 7.5 ton being paid class 2 rate working 4 days a week on 40k basic pay. I basically doubled my earnings from my previous job. Other than the ocassional long hours day due to shitty London traffic, my job is piss easy. If you thinking of doing HGV don't listen to all these complaining dicks in the comments just jump in and work for a good company with loads of benefits. Good video BTW

Now take a 26 year old that’s sat on a class one licence for two years and been driving at most 9 years….they’re straight above me in the queue……makes no sense at all in my mind (maybe I’m wrong) I’ve also noticed the huge number of applicants against each job, fully believe it’s drivers taking sideways moves for better money (no issues with that it makes financial sense) and companies not investing in the future of the industry, they want the experience and the dock acces cards but don’t want to give anyone the experience or get them the cards. I took rhides exam and passed only to find out you can’t get the card without a load 😂😂 the industry is a shambles

The more people accept the jobs that pay bad, the more employers will offer lower rates. The issue is that since 2020 and easing up the process of getting class 1 there is a lot more new drivers out there, many of which are desparete for work which pushes them to accept lower rates to keep the money flowing. On the contrary, it is difficult to get a job as a new pass since many employers just prefer to wait for skilled driver to apply which again pushes new drivers to accept much lower rates for the jobs that should pay more. Basically, things will change for better only when drivers will start refusing deliveries that don't pay well. But that's easier said than done when we think about large group of people.
Finally, the last thing is loyalty, people seem to be too much obsessed to stay with one company for too long so their wages don't go up as fast as they could driving overall wages down. But again, people just tend to feel confy with what they got and don't want to try something else or look around for something better. Just the human nature that is being exploited by the employers.

I think the issue is the cost of insurance for companies to hire new drivers, especially younger ones, then what's the turn over rate the first 2 years ? I'm betting it is insane like 50-80% then what's the % of the ones that stay in the industry but leave the company they were trained at for another after a few months of experience, this all as a cost/risk for the company and my guess is when you start you'll get a better chance of getting hired at a big company because of numbers they can have better/different insurance deals maybe and the risk is lower because it doesn't have a huge impact on the company, it's not going to go bankrupt if you mess up.
So if it's hard to get a first job and then a high % of new drivers quit before they get to that 2 year exp. mark equals shortage of experienced drivers means you can have a lot of drivers but still talk about a shortage because they can't be hired by most companies and as older drivers also stop working..

Considering that even under the old EU rules which were in place from 1997 to 2021, you could technically still do your Class 1 on the very same day as you'd just passed your Class 2. It was therefore nothing other than an EU endorsed money spinner for the training industry. I went straight from a car to Class 1 in 1991 and for the past 12 years, I've been a road train driver down under. The best piece of advice I would give to any potential new HGV driver is to simply learn to reverse a trailer (caravan ect) on the back of your car. If you can do that without any issues then you are far better placed to pass a Class 1 test than somebody who has spent a couple of years driving a Class 2 HGV. A car and trailer combination is simply a smaller version of a truck and trailer combination.

UK HGV drivers have to jump through so many hoops to get their licence as well as even more ongoing hoops but aren't paid that well. Hello mate, I'm a building site telehandler driver on agency. I've been doing it for 8 years. I'm on £31K a year. It's been really good to me. Now, it's gone wobbly. Work is harder to get. Last weekend, I paid £175 for my Class 1 medical & provisional.
What are your thoughts on my suitability to HGV? If nothing else, it's another feather in my cap. We just got a mortgage, & I need a stable job.

Coz people that have just passed there test are not given employment unless you have 6-12 months experience, then the industry complains to government, then goverment bring in foriene drivers who work for cheaper. I paid 3000 for my artic lisence and no one will take me on in class 1and 2 what a waste of money doing it..

Health and Safety is one reason. I use to go with my dad during school holidays so it was only natural me and my bro became drivers. You cant take kids anymore so they dont grow up with it, just see their parent away from home and doing long hours.
Another is the price to pass your car license, its paying for that 1st then paying for class 1 or 2, CPC, medicals etc. The cost just to get this job is crazy. Whereas kids can nowadays can get an apprenticeship and get paid to learn their career. You'll only get into this if you really want too. But i dont believe there is a shortage, we just need more because we are using more products that need delivering.

TBH whatever the true figure is it will always be a struggle for a working class employee who's on minimum wage perhaps working in a warehouse to find at least £4k for licenses, medicals & training only to be told when they pass to come back in 2 years when they have experience, the industry needs to look at itself and ask itself if it can see a problem on the horizon then put pressure on the insurance industry to change its attitude. This has to be the first step then work on retaining them once they're on board. Self driving trucks not the answer, will only inflate costs, cheaper to salary a driver who's paid for his/her own licence than fork out for the technology of self driving vehicles. Automated trucks will never contribute to cheaper costs like wind farms have never lowered our energy bills

    • @truckitprayle
      @truckitprayle  5 месяцев назад +1

@@truckitprayle well myself and a few colleagues got this idea when we were driving during the pandemic lockdowns, we were delivering to hospitals and charities pre furlough, so this may seem a bit off the wall but might have legs. We thought it would be a good idea to reintroduce national service but not the military type of service everyone assumes. Basically all students were nationalised to public service for 3 years for non pre graduates and 1 year for higher education students to work in the service sector to gain skills we currently struggle to recruit for. Nursing, Caring, Warehouse and Driving. As a student you choose your path depending on availability, those who wish to follow driving could use the 3 years to gain licenses and experience upto class 1 including ADR and STGO vehicles. Successful completion could also lead to training to become a vehicle mechanics so the young have a pathway to greater salaries at a younger age. It would have to be funded/subsidised through tax as most things are but I don't think the public would mind if they saw the next generation plugging gaps in the current system and those that are poor and cannot afford these licenses to benefit from the service. On a more industry specific note I'd outlaw reduced rest making planners stick to planning 13 hours with 11 hours rest. We need to retain those who agree to do this work and finally quality and cost of our rest areas and services are beyond shocking especially if you want to attract female drivers

There was a shortage of driver's for year's because Eastern European driver's flooded the market which drove down wage's. Brexit helped that because they left. I was told 3 year's ago polish drivers was going to Russia because the money was the same but only payed 6% tax. Second think is been robbed. I've had my diesel nicked 3 times. Curtains slashed even services, & the CPC which is a waste of time. My experience is my health & battling with the DVLA. Since 2015 I was off for 5 year's. Got my license back in 2020, but they only gave me a 2 year license. Now they want renew it because of my heart, so that's it, not fighting with them anymore & I've walked away.

A certain red, white and blue supermarket company may be a very good place to work.
£14.70 an hr weekdays, nearly £20 an hr on weekends. Currently in wage negotiations so that base £14.70 will probably be over £16 soon.
Work Fri-Mon, so £ per hr is higher on average with Sat/Sun rates. Plus 3 days off every week, love it.
Very relaxed and can work your contracted 9.25hrs a day if you want to.
