I did my first CPC in a class with some eastern European immigrants, one of which could not speak a word of English. Not even yes or no. He passed without question. How did this 'improve professionalism'
Didn't know ADR and or Forklift training also could be used towards CPC that's very useful info for me, did my class 2 over 13 years ago unfortunately I failed and ended up finding a warehouse job which I progressed well in and now a manager but redundancies have been announced and will be leaving the job end of July so looking at alternatives, don't really fancy going somewhere else as a manager as I've worked my way up and done it my way and always got involved on the warehouse floor and worked with the guys using the forklifts and helping them out rather than sit in the office all day, I've been shunting artics and rigids for nearly ten years as well so looking at going that route but most places now need a class 1 licence to shunt so in that sort of environment it would make more sense that I did forklift and ADR rather than the full CPC so thanks for the info buddy!
The CPC is a course like any other course in most walks of life, I dislike it as much as anyone else but the reality is simple, Brexshit was a total clusterfcuk as any continental driver will tell you…I spent almost 48 years doing international work and the worst decision I ever seen was Brexshit , I never liked the CPC but it’s one day a year not three weeks and it’s part of a professional standard …To diverge even further from the EU which is what you and some posters are saying by ignoring it just damages the chances of the UK getting back into the single market..I know the costs of what being outside the single market is as the coast majority of exporters and importers will testify to, its stupidity on steroids and has added greatly to the cost of goods being transported even indirectly…
My husband passed both his HGV class one and his PSV manual tests at the age of 21 years old back in 1977. He now has 2 licenses that are useless because why the hell should he have to pay from his own pocket to prove he can do a job that he has done for so many years?
But of course it is. Like a lot of other licenses you nowadays need to have to perform some plain and easy jobs. Boomers introduced those, to keep the (younger and hungrier) competition lower and to make profit on pointless training courses and license fees.
The problem with the CPC course is you have to do modules that are of no use to you. A better training idea would be to do a yearly Tacho rule refresher, roadside first aid and update on new Highway Code rules. That would be more beneficial to do for 7 hours a year.
Especially when the same modules are repeated one after the other. This happened to me, the instructor said that all five modules can be the same content as long as you complete 35 hours.
I'm 61, passed my class 1, 40 years ago. I've roped and sheeted, stripped tilts, thrown chains over steel and reversed loaded 20 foot skellys. As an agency man, I've had to pay out of my own pocket for this utter farce of a qualification. I'm out when it expires later this year.
It's the biggest load of shite and money making con I've ever seen, I know someone who sat the same 1 day course for 5 days in a row to bring his CPC up to date
@AshleyHaleUK there is still a way of getting round it. The modules are supposed to have individual numbers but not all do. My mate has just taken 5 separate modules and three of them didn't have a module number. He has just been issued his new card.
@@AshleyHaleUK Well when your cpc is out of date and you get a job driving is there a choice, 1 day course and have to wait for the next one available or do the same 1 all week, at least you get a sleep 😁 wasn't me btw!! And this was in 2019 so maybe it has been changed but I'd say there is ways round this
My hgv licence was due for renewal last september and i haven,t bothered...im in a job now where i live half a mile from home...i have regular hours and normal start/finish times...the money is decent enough and im not stuck in traffic for hours on end... i,ve done my mileage over the years but im done with the industry...good luck guys and stay safe.
A lot of older drivers that hit 65 but were physically fit and well and wanted to carry on, did until they had to do CPC. Brother in law was one of many.
The Driver CPC was government and the EU trying to set standards and professionalism for truck drivers on the one hand whilst, at the same time, setting ZERO standards with the other hand regarding pay and remuneration for those very same drivers. I don't know how many times that I have said that UK truck drivers have to jump through so many industry specific legislated hoops to get their licence as well as even more industry specific legislated hoops to keep that licence, yet there is no industry specific legislation covering pay.
I did exactly the same, I will never do it again, I did Monday to Friday 35 hours and have never heard as much nonsense in my life and it was one of the top "training" providers. Standing in the middle of a room picking up an empty cardboard box as part of manual handling, some manc knob head telling you to double knot your boot laces to stop you tripping over them getting in and out of the cab. How does that garbage make you a better driver?
the CPC is the reason i left the HGV world, after commercially driving for nearly 35 years, to me it was an insult , being taught how to do a job i had done for a lot of years, worst of all , it was being 'taught' by people who HAD NEVER even driven HGV !!
Ditto. My CPC runs out in September and I won't be renewing it. I've had enough, after 35 years of long hours, sitting in jams day after day and all the other crap that we have to put up with, I'll let all the younger ones get on with it.
What it's going to be like in 35 years for today's youngsters, God ...er...AI only knows! But the next thing to be overhauled should be the points on licence system.12 strikes and you're out has been the motto for the last 36 years. With all the cameras around these days it should be uprated to at least 20, if not 25 for a fairer system!
I refuse to drive a truck ever again because of the tax known as the CPC. Initially, when I first did it, the instructor said to us "there's nothing you can do about it, you might as well sit down and endure the lessons". I got up, walked out and never went back. He was wrong, there is something I could do....and I did. That was in 2016.
For me, the two main things about the CPC are 1. Ignorance is no longer a defence. You cannot say I don't know, I haven't been taught/trained if stopped at a check and a mistake or infringement is discovered. 2. It is a cash cow for the "training industry".
People make mistakes. I've been told DVSA are interested in patterns on infringements not just the odd one, unless it's a major one. It's definitely a money thing but, how much do you think it cost the trainers to run these courses
Everything is down to interpretation. I rermember I did a tacho course years ago when I worked for a large coach company. They sent all their drivers (about 80) in groups of 10 for these courses. About a week later I was on a double-drive job with a friend of mine and it turns out she had a different instructor than the one I'd had and certain things she'd been told were different from what I'd been told. I pointed out to her that even if I did everything I did the way I was taught and she did everything she did the way she was told we may get pulled by a VOSA official that had a different interpretation of the rules and we'd both be wrong. As for the CPC, I totally agree with you that it's a cash grab, when it first came out I did a full week in a classroom. I did module one 3 times and module three twice. How can that certify me as professionally competent when I've only covered 2 modules?
I have always been an agency driver. when i had to do my cpc courses i had to pay myself. Now my cpc is coming up for needing doing, i'm thinking that i dont need this crap. only a cash cow, and i'll lose money on potential wages while doing the CPC and its time i wont get back. Hell in a handbasket!
@@PlanesandTrains That's something else, talking about agency work, I've done agency work myself in the past driving 7.5 tonne vehicles. Now I'm not positive but I'm pretty certain that when the CPC was first introduced it wasn't needed for 7.5t vehicles, but it is now. Why should I need a CPC for something I've been able to drive on my car licence since I was 17 years old? (I past my test back in 1987, you got 7.5t automatically back then)
When I started in the industry, there was no tacho’s only logbooks and even when the tacho’s came in, the job was enjoyable enough but over the years, when the red tape came in, health and safety videos, and then the CPC, that was it for me. So after nearly 50 years as a HGV driver, I left the industry and it was the best decision I made!
When I was in the coach industry we had a cpc bloke want to come on a day trip to so call assess our driving but when asked what license he had he had only passed his car test so how could he assess our driving
I stopped driving around 2008 after changing jobs but still did a bit until the CPC. I have done 3 sections online which is an absolute load of crap! I had Eastern Europeans on one course who couldn’t even speak English.. one CPC instructor who had been doing it for a couple of years and had made her own little graph stated that the 45min break isn’t included within a 15hr duty so essentially you’ll be on duty for 16hrs with 1hr break. Me and another guy argued this was wrong and it was only after a few more started to join is she finally realised that she was wrong.. I know one driver who’s been driving all his life and was one of the guys who took loads from Clevedon, Somerset out to the Chinese border with Ralph Davies in the 90s. There’s nothing this man didn’t know and yet he has to sit in front of idiots like this and be told how to do a job he’s been doing for decades.. madness! I think there’s a place for the CPC for new drivers but for existing drivers the courses could be condensed down, let’s say 3hrs for each module. A full day is far too long and is just another money making scheme.
The Hgv industry seems to be the only industry where the employee has to keep ploughing money to keep there job. I left the industry as where I live in Ayrshire the average hourly rate is £12. I believe the CPC is one of the biggest causes of people leaving the industry. It seems to be the Hgv industry is all about take take take with no financial rewards. I’m enjoying your channel, keep up the great work
All I would say about the CPC is, it didn't help me to get a job driving HGV s in anyway shape or form! All I was told when speaking to haulage companies was oh you're a new driver? Oh sorry we don't take on new drivers, we need 2 years experience!! And that's all I kept getting! Until one place were willing to give me a shot! And I'm still with them now! 14 months ago. The other thing I'd like to say is, I wished my daf had an arm rest! 😂😂 Passenger side has one but not driver seat! 😮
One of the few jobs where the harder you work the more you can be fined, it's now a thankless job, i spent most of my time driving abroad, uk didn't cater for truckers the same way our eu cousins do, you're treated more as a professional there and more as a hindrance at home... glad i got out.
Soon as you do your class II if you decide to do class II personally, I would go straight for class 1 but if you do class II, go for class I within 2 years and no need to do theory again.
it is indeed a money making scheme for them yes but also for us. the scheming powers that be have made it compulsory SO we need to do it for us to make money unfortunately drivers won't tools down and show solidarity to MAKE US the powers that be.
I'm a wheeled loading shovel operator . And for 30 years or more I've had this sort of crap . Got my first operator card from CITB which is now known as CPCS. And as a operator every 5 years you have to reapply for your operator card . Under CITB that just ment a one day safety coures and a touch screen test job done you could apply for a new card . Now under CPCS you have to fill out weekly operator cards name, date, operator, card number, hours worked . And now every 5 years you have to send 150 hours of operator cards which have been signed by your manager and hours worked have be validated by CPCS stamp And do a touch screen test . If the company you work for is not a member of CPCS THEY CAN'T VALIDATE YOUR HOURS NO STAMP . My argument here is why do I need to know a ladder should at 75 degrees up a wall or only approved scaffolders can touch scaffolding . When I'm sat in 26 ton loader in a quarry miles from ladders miles from scaffolding . It really is a money making scheme from common sense .COME THE END OF THE DAY YOUR ONLY AS SAFE AS THE IDIOT YOUR WORKING WITH
It is just sleath tax end of i just walked away from it i started driving trucks in 1967 fuck the government they promise so much for truck drivers and just shit on them 🤬🤬🤬
I've just completed my 35 hours. Had to do 2 on the bounce.Takes me up to 2029. Medical due in July. Been driving hgv since 1984. I will NOT be doing anymore cpc. Back when it started, there were 8-10 Guys & Gals sitting around a table. Good banter & made the day go quicker. Now, You stare at a laptop hoping the wifi holds up, Get treated/spoken to like you're 10 years old. No more for me.
@@AshleyHaleUK I've Driven all over the country in all weather. Seen some wonderful scenery & met some great (And strange)People. Once my latest Dustcart stint is up that's it i'm sure.
I,ve done 3 over the last 15 years,on an early course, I had to stand and watch the instructor demonstrate how to get in and out of the cab ( 3 points of contact) after 35 years and over a million miles , I think I have the gist of that thanks🙈
Totally agree that the cpc should be scrapped it’s a complete waste off time, I left the industry after 25 years due to the vosa and the cpc. The last couple off years we’ve had to do a test at the end off the days course and you had to get 80% right to pass the course.
@@AshleyHaleUK I think I’d like to make it more interesting and change it a bit because we seem to be doing the same thing over and over again and it just gets dull, I’m pretty sure it won’t be scrapped because there’s to many people making money out of it now.
At 74 yrs of age my CPC is due for renewal in September. I am not prepared to sit through another CPC class. I have only been working part time weekends this past 8 years and quite capable of driving another few years but I have made up my mind to finish driving HGV's. It's getting costly to renew my HGV driving licence every year although I agree that an annual medical at my time of life is necessary. These large haulage companies have introduced so many health and safety rules that a driver is unable to make decisions based on common sense.
If they want to professionalise the industry they need to go after the companies, not the drivers. If companies are held more accountable for their actions drivers might be treated better. Retired and don't miss driving, its only after you stop you realise how much it controls your life. Its not a 9 to 5 job, its 24/7.
Although I hadn't used my HGV class one licence for a number of years, I kept it up as a back-up. Then came along the CPC to add to the cost of the medical to renew the licence. I gave it up. Later after my first retirement Britain was desperate for HGV drivers. I looked at the cost of the CPC and said no, just not worth it.
The CPC is Eurobollocks. It adds nothing but expense to operators. For the “training” to count, you just have to be there for your attendance card to be signed. So many turn up with books, magazines, iPads to watch a film or just sleep. You cannot fail a CPC but may have to fill in an assessment. It’s one of those unless things weak governments sign up to believing that activity counts just as much as achievement.
Well done on your videos they are good and very informative as a driver that has been driving over 25 years and now owns my own truck and trailer the CPC is now a joke I wish it was there when I started so that I could have had the experience that it would have given me at the start but to do it after all these years time and time again bearing in mind that in order for me to do it I have to either use a day of my weekend or park the truck up for a day and also I pay for the course myself. You say that you do one day a year and that is correct but in the real world we leave it all until the last minute and then have to cram 5 days in The last time I completed mine I could only do the same course 5 times how can that be right. The industry is losing out on some very very experienced drivers as this is a job that you can carry on well into retirement age. But a lot of those guys never sat in a classroom when they was at school let alone when they're 70 years old.
I think that's the issues driver were the one that we would now say have adhd so didn't pass exams. Different type of intelligence. Being an owner operator and doing all the cpcs must be even worse. Do you have to do driver and TM CPCs?
@@AshleyHaleUK you can employ somebody to be your transport manager or you can take the CPC yourself. In my case I have my own CPC and then have to do the driver CPC every 5 years. And I class myself as a true lorry driver is all I ever wanted to be as a boy and I pride myself on it but yes I can still learn something new everyday but I'm not sure I get anything out of the CPC courses that I have done.
@@AshleyHaleUK not sure what the cost is now I did my quite a while ago. Like all things I think you can do it online which makes it cheaper back when I did mine it was in a classroom for a week.
As a bus dvr it is a total farce. I worked for a big bus operator. To squeeze the numbers thru, dvrs had to sit literally 5 days of exactlty the same 'modules'! The course just entailed discussion etc. Not a single piece of education.
I've been driving trucks along time the job ran fine without the cpc its just rubbish! If they want more drivers get rid of the cpc all it is more revenue its a load of crap. I never learnt a think on the cpc apart from how to sleep upright!!!😂
I have to do a first aid re-certification every 3 years, my company pay me, and pay for the course, and they give me an extra days annual leave each year. The course never changes that much over the years. I not complaining
I have taken a couple of these courses bit of waste of time in my option as I was self employed it cost me a lot of money, I am Sixty now and have managed to retire but I know a lot guys driving into their mid 70’s, I not sure the CPC is a reason to get out the industry but there are many other reasons, when a man gos out to do a days work and gets find £275 because he had to drive into London to make that delivery, these are the types of reasons why guys and girls are getting out the industry, facilities for drivers, affordable and healthy eating options are non existent and that’s if you can find a parking space these lorry parks get full very quickly and early. I could go on but you guys just starting will over time find that this isn’t a great industry to be in. The upside is you should never be out of work but the money will be what your worth. Good luck to you anyway and stay safe.
I was on a driving hour cpc course. The tutor told he wss an ex bus driver who had never driven a truck. We were a bemused by what he was telling us. Either the regulations had changed, and no one had told us or he was getting a little confused. As we all knew it was the latter. After lunch, we confronted him telling we knew he was telling a list of crap. Turns out the real cpc trainer was ill he just worked in the travel agency side of the bus company that ran the courses as a side line. We still all passed. I had no objection to attending some real training but the cpc is a farce and nothing more than tick box joke
I did my CPC module 2 and 4 in 2022, then the training company talked me into doing the CPC modules as well, which I didn't need to do. So my CPC was then vailid for 10 years
Considering when this first came out, you could sit the same module 5 times!! Example, access & egress (getting in & out) of the cab! 35 hours of how to get in & out of a truck!!! It’s nothing but a money making scheme/scam! Utter waste of time.
Good vlog Ashley. This one size fits all is not a good fit. As farmers with a 7.5 tonne truck to take stock to market or deliver fodder, say 2 or three times a week, for a hour trip this is a waste of time. There are exceptions, scaffolders do not drive trucks full time are exempt, but not farmers!!!!! Take care.
It is certainly needed! I work with a few drivers with over 30 years experience and they don't like it. However, one of these is about to be finished and is currently of the road due to several fault accidents, not able to do any sort of manual entry and even driving without his card in! Another, says its a money making scheme yet he is on a warning for not strapping his load properly. It's a generation thing and typical 'I know better' and resistant to change, when in fact, many don't and are too complacent.
You can say the same about young or old when it comes to complacency, once you have been informed of any new regulations if you don't comply with them and get caught out you deserve all you get.
As an older driver the CPC was the deal breaker for me. Younger drivers for some reason need constant education although i have no idea why only the fact that the younger generation seem much more compliant with rules and regs that often benefit the powers that be with no resistance. This is just the start of something much bigger.
Yeh, The government don`t understand that a lot of drivers are cleverer than they might appear, If the job gets a pain they can move into a new profession that works with them not against them. hence the shortage of good drivers If in fact there is a shortage as I find it hard the trust anything i hear in the media.
I’ve just retired from the industry it’s just not a good job anymore. My company paid for my course but I found it a complete waste of time teaching me to suck eggs all I ever did was first aid.We used to have great cafes with good food, showers, safe parking for about a tenner breakfast included. All that has gone drivers are being ripped off at the service stations having their fuel stolen and sometimes worse,There is no respect for you on the road or at your destination.Having been there for 45 years you guys have my respect and thanks because I don’t have anything in my house that didn’t at one time come off a lorry.
I drive a mini bus for 2hrs everyday I have to have a CPC, and yet a community bus that is driving for 8hrs a day doesn’t need it,it’s a attendance course that you sit there, they are saying that it will soon be a pass or fail, there is a massive shortage of drivers so watch this space for a even bigger shortage, my last CPC was first aid it was very good.
@@AshleyHaleUK I used to be a butcher before I took up truck driving, I must've been the only butcher in the world that fainted at the sight of blood.
And the refresher course is on your time, always at the weekend. It’s 7 1/2 hours per course and you have to add your lunchtime as well, they will also not allow you to leave early. Very boring and you feel like you’re back in a classroom.
I quit after 30 years entirely due to this. My issue was they wanted me to pay for it myself (£500) and do it in my own time. Looking back it was a blessing, if I was still legal the agency would still be pestering me. The job's no fun these days.
Leaving september final nail in coffin in france stopped several times never been asked for card then back in uk at Winchester showed visa card was not interested asked what he thought .money makeing I've been driving 39 years and now no card no driving so stuff it
I have to do them for both my hgv license and crop sprayers, refreshers for industrial and telescopic loaders. I feel it’s a good opportunity to keep up to date with new legislation as new drivers there’s a lot of information that you don’t learn on your driving test. As with all of them they can get quite stale though. Maybe they need livening up a bit but for what equates to 1 day a year I can’t see why it’s a bad thing.
I'm not a big fan of driver CPC, but I don't think it's as bad as some people make out. If you work for a decent company, they'll pay for it and claim the training costs back themselves so drivers aren't out of pocket. We also have some specially approved courses tailored to our role which also count towards the CPC hours, so it doesn't have to be the same run of the mill 5 courses it used to be. Our CPC is also booked during normal working hours INSTEAD of doing a normal days work. I would be annoyed if I had to do the training on a weekend or in my own time on top of my usual duties like some people have mentioned.
It's the same in any regulated industry. I work in an office, yet still have to complete around 7 modules every year, ranging from health and safety to anti-money laundering. I think it unfair though if your company is forcing you to pay for the course, even if they pay for your time. It's as much for the company's benefit that the course is completed, as it is yours, so they should shoulder that responsibility. Maybe a good compromise is reducing the CPC burden for long service? Maybe some mandatory modules each year, especially if there's been any legislation change, but if you've been working the job continuously for +5 years, just making sure complacency isn't creeping in is enough?🤔
You may think leaving because of the CPC was silly, but it was the final straw for many having already becoming disheartened with job due to long hours, crap wages and being treat like shit on your shoe by staff at the delivery points is distribution centre's etc.
Hi. Since I last did my CPC , by the sounds of what you say they are now making a test at the end of it, my last CPC it was based on attending , where a load of drivers listened and the night truckers slept at the back of the room , only to that nights run later on. I don’t think all older drivers left due to CPC. It was rather lack of improvement for the drivers in the industry and it was just another barrier . I can understand the basis of the CPC. due to the much older driving style of having a drivers mate, due to EU and 32 to 44 ton and tri-axle and slightly longer from 40ft to 13m trailers and more U.K. hauliers doing European work all coming in. But now what ever the drive or The professional driver has to do, the industry has a lack of drivers and a high turnover of drivers which makes it sensible to have the CPC so that it catches the high turnover of drivers ie now all drivers learn from a classroom situation rather from first being a mate and learning in situation and from a driver who would know all the big and small things to know.
I've recently come out of the army with my HGV license and had a job lined up. When i arrived on my first day they asked do i have my CPC. ive never been told or even heard about it till then. They refused to pay for it and kicked me out the door even though it was thier fault they never asked or checked and informed me weeks before i started. Now im having to use my time to book my CPC out of my own pocket when i should of been working and wasted so much time because of mismanagement
The army should have told you, you need it for civie work. I thought as well if your coming out of the army then they paid for things like that to help you find work. The company should have asked for all of you cards at the interview
Tbh id probably have tried to do a little less at the time, had there not been a cpc. Maybe tried to find 2 or 3 days a week. But it gave me a push to hang the keys up completely. Short answer, Yes!
I did my CPC and international CPC back in the 80's when I was an owner driver, so I could get an operators license. Once your in the industry there's not much changes over the years, so having to do a course over and over again is not just an inconvenience it's insulting. The onset of this kind of thing was one of the reasons I left the UK / Europe and moved to Australia. The regulations here lean more towards productivity, than interference. If you want to do a worth while course, come to Australia and get your MC..... B Double / road train. and yes you have to reverse them. The industry standard is twice the length of the combined length of the vehicle 116 meters. My good mate Ken has a YT channel and I often meet up with him when I'm out and about.... Homeless Truckie... The odd thing is, that even though there are literary thousands of us doing the same kind of work all over Australia it's usually the same folk you meet all the time.
Got a mate in WA who's moved over there doing road trains. And a mate in Sydney who does Truck/Metal Polishing who used to interstate up to the NT. I would love to come over and give a go for a while for sure.
@@AshleyHaleUK Have a word with the Australian embassy, see if you can get a working visa. I put my application in on Tuesday, and was on the plane Sunday.... A lot of people are under the impression that you can just transfer your license. But everyone has to do the full test.... However if you have been driving HGV's full time there won't be a problem... As long as you have had your UK license for over 1 year you can go for an MC straight away.
I did my initial cpc just over 2 weeks ago, an hours training and then the test which felt like it lasted about 15 minutes. 300 quid gone for what was basically a rehash of the show me tell me questions and then demonstrating putting a ratchet strap on a glorified shopping trolley. And guess what... Im still waiting for my CPC card. Emailed DVSA twice and they said they issued the card and I should get it soon, Also said that I can legally drive without it now they have issued it... But what company is gonna set on a newly passed driver with no cpc card, Just to make things worse the CPC does not show up when I check my driving licence entitlement online. Dont get me wrong I would do any training and tests as its just part of the job as you say, But my first impression is, it is just holding me up and causing me problems.
Hi I have been reading some of the comments I have been driving for over 40 years I started when I was 18 driving little until I got my hgv 3 first with job centre it was the best thing I did I had lost off jobs agency I worked for a lot of big companies that if you whent to you would not get a job then I got my hgv 1 because they said I could make more money but it was a joke I passed my test on a two week course then your on your own I could not get any class one work no experience so I had to carry on driving ridged it was 19 months before I got too drive class one the thing is you had to learn your self but I got bye I had been working for Wilkinson for 33yars but I'm from the North that's another story but I loved the job never been out of work but the cpc I have done the course but mine has runn out but I just think once you have done cpc you should just be able to renew it without having to do 35 hours that is why I have not renewed mine I've still got my licence but I only want part time now if I was going to drive again I would not say its rubbish but it has stopped me working for the last few years their are loads of lorrie places near me
Just done a couple of cpc's. Done mine online at home rather than sit in a classroom all day. There's a lot of changes coming. Also the new UK cpc's that are coming won't be valid in the EU although you will be able to take an EU cpc which I think will still be valid in the UK.
I like many gave up driving as soon as I found out about the cpc that year was 2008 I was told by a bus driver that 2009 was going to be our turn they can stick it as I said we all said same thing we hated school when we were kids so why would we want to go back to school to learn what we all ready know

CPC sucks balls, total waste of time and money. Experienced drivers leaving the industry because of it. Sad loss these have vast knowledge they could have taught the next generation.
Not bothered about CPC. Company covers everything, get payed for full hours no matter how many you normally do in a day, and only stay for 8 hours. Our driver coach brings in snacks and we all end up having a laugh 👍🏻
The CPC is a great idea, I had been a driver for over 40 years, but know I have forgotten things, some things have changed without my knowing, and watching other drivers, I am confidence many are just not doing their jobs properly. the problem with the CPC, is it is just really badly implemented, it should have a pass fail rather than attendance requirement, it should have certain compulsory modules, and it should be a lot cheaper. If you want professional wages, you need to be professional about your job.
Maybe you should read these comments about the CPC, thousands of drivers have left the industry because of it, I don't see what could have changed in all those years to warrant 35 hours in a classroom listening to a complete idiot telling you his life story. Any changes have been minimal, what is a transport manager there for?
I been driving small Lorries 7.5 tone coaches as well ,Since 2001 Done 35 hours CPC .. Not to bad still boring .But we covered taco laws and done first aid as well a few things have changed
Hi mate, I would like to see new car learner drivers get HGV Awareness Training. They are not aware of the stopping distances and weight transfer when they cut in front of us from the fast lane and slow down causing us to brake or lower our 56 mph speed. Why overtake then slow down?. Also at times Emergency Braking System has activated as a result of drivers cutting in and using the carriageway as a Scalextric Track etc etc. They have no clue. Stevie in Fife.
Been driving since 1978,done two courses ,now retired was going to do some part-time. But the thought of doing a cpc again I decided to call it a day.My view on it completely useless, with no benefit whatsoever. Been in the industry all my life had a clean license .what are they going to teach me an insult to professional drivers
Done tacho dcpc course in January full class all middle age blokes driving for years and it was shocking how many did not have a clue about tacho rules they new the basics that’s all
Trouble is, most of the time it's just the basics that we use. It's only when something goes 'wrong' that we have to actually think about what it is we need to do.
I left the industry, loved driving trucks, but got sick of all the extra pressure they put on the driver, silly hours law's, how they expect you to drive that many hours and not end up knackered. CPC is a joke, teaches nothing. VOSA hiding like bandits, in the end it was all to much to cope with, and I had a nervous breakdown.
I know someone who has obtained a "backhander" cpc , my cpc runs out in Sept, & I considered it myself but I will be 67 & after 48 years enough is enough
We all said when it came in We as the HGV drivers of 15 to 30 years on the road. We said yes bring it in for new drivers, and to use a day or 2 days course to bring the old guard drivers upto speed on new legislation, not how to suck eggs. Especially when some thatvare teaching you have never driven an HGV.
OK, I dare say that many people will not like this comment but, here goes. I have worked in distribution for 25 years and in 2009 I took on the job of setting up and managing the CPC training for my company. Apart from the fact that I will lose my job if it is scrapped, I would be very sad to see it go. For me, it is not just about getting bums on seats and the drivers trained. I use it to deliver interesting, enjoyable, relevant courses for my drivers. It has allowed me to get everyone up to speed with the things they need to know. Even guys who have been driving for as long as I have been there are learning new things. Perhaps, very importantly, for a lot of haulage companies, it comes down to the money and I believe that if it becomes optional to train drivers, they just won't get trained. I also think that it is a good platform for drivers to get together and discuss things with their peers. Being a trucker is a lonely job and they spend hours and hours on their own. I think many of them enjoy the opportunity.
A better way to deliver driver CPC should be on the job annual training. Quite simply, the driver CPC trainer goes out on the road with a driver for 1 day every year and delivers the training from the passenger seat.
Best thing to happen to the industry....now distance drivers do 2 weeks out ..... before the CPC ...6 weeks out was normal and sleeping in the truck...hours are less and money is better
I did my 4th cpc a few weeks ago. Al! With a different company and each time the person running the course goes of the subject and talks about stuff that is not relevant to hgv driving and your not really interested in. Time spent actually learning stuff is probably about 2 hours.
The problem with the "DCPC is crap/waste of time" etc arguments, is that when I've been on courses, there's always a driver or two or three that embarass themselves with their poor knowledge of tacho laws etc.
@AshleyHaleUK no ours was done inhouse but we were told an adjudication official may turn up but he never its basically as others have said a tax you know your job and yes have to be professional I suppose you could also see it as a refresher but is there any need ??
CPC to me is a waste of time from sitting learning 4 modules in the same week on how lets say rope a truck, bearing in mind I have a PCV licence. Also in the 10+ years I've had it not once other than an employer has anyone ever asked to see it. To me it's a money spinner because what is charged for a course is not regulated.
So true I started driving my dad flatt beds in my dad's yard at 14 got started at 23 I refused to get talked down by sum snot faced git millions of miles I have done
Can we just mention it's all well and good doing CPC however there are companies out there my one being one of them and your told if you don’t like the practices and equipment then leave. As there isn't much work about ATM we constantly have to contradict our training or be jobless
Did not bother renewing my HGV license dut to this money making racket. Went full time driving Construction plant for the last 8 years. Less stress and more money.
I've been driving lorries for 26 yrs and would give the job up today if i could find something else i was good at due to all the shit that comes with driving including the cpc
@@AshleyHaleUK It's finding something you enjoy, pointless giving up a job to do something you hate. The standard of driving from other road users is getting worse by the day and nobody has any respect for hgv's anymore
As far as I'm concerned cpc should only apply to the drivers that are driving in mainland Europe, as it is their directive. They are thousands of drivers that do not do their day job in mainland Europe.
In the position now where I have to renew my LGV licence and CPC. I would have considered doing so and driving again in the future but not keen at the expense of doing so.
Check out my review of a CPC course provided by Driver Hire Training Link Below

I did my first CPC in a class with some eastern European immigrants, one of which could not speak a word of English. Not even yes or no. He passed without question. How did this 'improve professionalism'
I get what you mean. It's just an attendance thing.
I have sat through CPC classes and many have been marred by arguments and animosity. I stopped going and it stopped.
It's currently not possible to fail a CPC you just need to attend. The government is consolting over introducing assessments so this may change.
My licence ran out a year ago I will not do the cpc , its a money making scheme
The comment below states a guy that doesn't speak a word of English sailed through without question.
It's called stealth tax
My husband passed both his HGV class one and his PSV manual tests at the age of 21 years old back in 1977. He now has 2 licenses that are useless because why the hell should he have to pay from his own pocket to prove he can do a job that he has done for so many years?
But of course it is. Like a lot of other licenses you nowadays need to have to perform some plain and easy jobs. Boomers introduced those, to keep the (younger and hungrier) competition lower and to make profit on pointless training courses and license fees.
How is it a money making scheme?
The problem with the CPC course is you have to do modules that are of no use to you. A better training idea would be to do a yearly Tacho rule refresher, roadside first aid and update on new Highway Code rules. That would be more beneficial to do for 7 hours a year.
Definitely, more specific training for the jobs would make so much more sense!
Especially when the same modules are repeated one after the other.
This happened to me, the instructor said that all five modules can be the same content as long as you complete 35 hours.
@@AndrewReynoldFord you can’t do the same modules this time round. I can’t believe they let you last time 🤷♂️
Having just retired from driving (class 1 ) ,I’m glad to see the back of it
You and me both, it was good once but glad I'm out of it now
Agreed I finished after 43 years glad to see the back of it the job has just got so shit living the dream now though
Glad I'm out of it job is crap now and the cpc load of shite
Class 1 you must be old 😂
It's the biggest load of shite and money making con I've ever seen, I know someone who sat the same 1 day course for 5 days in a row to bring his CPC up to date
How long ago was that? Coz you can't do that anymore. Not sure I'd want to either!
@AshleyHaleUK there is still a way of getting round it. The modules are supposed to have individual numbers but not all do. My mate has just taken 5 separate modules and three of them didn't have a module number. He has just been issued his new card.
Iv took the same module on 2 different occasions but believe that has been changed now
@@AshleyHaleUK
Well when your cpc is out of date and you get a job driving is there a choice, 1 day course and have to wait for the next one available or do the same 1 all week, at least you get a sleep 😁 wasn't me btw!! And this was in 2019 so maybe it has been changed but I'd say there is ways round this
I used to do that but they've closed that loophole.
Sound like you got a great opportunity there and you're happier.
A lot of older drivers that hit 65 but were physically fit and well and wanted to carry on, did until they had to do CPC. Brother in law was one of many.
But why? Its one day every year in a class room...
Very ture!
Let my licence lapse and left the industry as i refuse to do the CPC. Just do courier work now with a large van.
For me, the two main things about the CPC are
That is ridiculous! How did anybody think that was a good idea!
It is changing so that you can do 3.5 hours at a time.
@@deviousdescent9010 yes but I believe you still have to make up the full day… so basically they’ve just said you can do half a course at a time.
Spot on what you said new drivers yes someone whos been doing it for year a day and should be done
Been driving hgv since 1974 it was log book all it is today is a money maker just glad am out of it
The Hgv industry seems to be the only industry where the employee has to keep ploughing money to keep there job.
You make the best videos bout hgv driving man keep at it. Passed the theorys, going for the class 2 soon
Thanks. Really appreciate it. Let me know how you get on!
Yeah the day the cpc came in the keys to the truck flew through the air to the boss and I walked in to another job
But why? It's 1 day a year, why couldn't you do that?
@@AshleyHaleUK I’ve already got a bit of paper for that truck so I can drive it I don’t need another
I'm a wheeled loading shovel operator .

Can't do 3 point of contact with a drink in one hand and sandwich in the other!
Totally agree that the cpc should be scrapped it’s a complete waste off time, I left the industry after 25 years due to the vosa and the cpc. The last couple off years we’ve had to do a test at the end off the days course and you had to get 80% right to pass the course.
What would you change about the CPC? Coz it ain't going anywhere, might as well make it worth while.
@@AshleyHaleUK I think I’d like to make it more interesting and change it a bit because we seem to be doing the same thing over and over again and it just gets dull, I’m pretty sure it won’t be scrapped because there’s to many people making money out of it now.

It's only going over rules and regulations that you'd find in most drivers handbooks.
Companies need more accountability your right.
It is a lifestyle not a job.
its the management of the companies that need sorting. Most treat blokes like shit.Your not wrong.
@@stevediggle5279 that's interesting to know. How much do the TM CPCs cost in comparison?
Sound like a badly run CPC course then.
🤣🤣🤣 that's quite funny. So glad he's not a receptionist at a hospital and the surgeon was sick!
As long as 35 hours are in the bank all 5 modules can be the same. I spent half of mine dozing.
Every time when I was sent to a CPC course it was on a Saturday and we never got paid for it. I luckily hung my keys up in 2017.
I did my CPC module 2 and 4 in 2022, then the training company talked me into doing the CPC modules as well, which I didn't need to do. So my CPC was then vailid for 10 years
That's one way to do it. No class rooms for you for a while then. 😂😂😂
Take care.
Loads of little exception, could make another longer video and still not cover them all!
Definitely agree. People don't change with the times and learn the new rules.
You can say the same about young or old when it comes to complacency, once you have been informed of any new regulations if you don't comply with them and get caught out you deserve all you get.
It's simple, follow the rules. No issues.
Thanks for the advice, I'm off to pay for my course tomorrow as in hgv class 1 course, lots to take in. !
You're welcome. Let us know how you get on with the tests!
As an older driver the CPC was the deal breaker for me. Younger drivers for some reason need constant education although i have no idea why only the fact that the younger generation seem much more compliant with rules and regs that often benefit the powers that be with no resistance. This is just the start of something much bigger.
Viva La Revolution!!!!
People have said the first aid is good to do, but I'm already a full first aid person. Just don't like dealing with blood 😨
@@AshleyHaleUK
I used to be a butcher before I took up truck driving, I must've been the only butcher in the world that fainted at the sight of blood.
And the refresher course is on your time, always at the weekend. It’s 7 1/2 hours per course and you have to add your lunchtime as well, they will also not allow you to leave early. Very boring and you feel like you’re back in a classroom.
I did the 5 cpc day courses within a 6 week period near the end of my 5yr increment, and 3 of them were the same topics.
It like everything, it's what you make of it! It would be nice if there was one organisation that did everything so it was all cross referenced!
Yep mine runs out end of the year won't bother to renew it
Why is that?
But now what ever the drive or
The professional driver has to do, the industry has a lack of drivers and a high turnover of drivers which makes it sensible to have the CPC so that it catches the high turnover of drivers
ie now all drivers learn from a classroom situation rather from first being a mate and learning in situation and from a driver who would know all the big and small things to know.
To get a really good feel for the CPC you need to do the health and safety course at least 5 times, then maybe you’ll understand
My cpc expires in October. I won’t be renewing it after 44 years during and 20 instructing. It’s a waste of time I’m done
Tbh id probably have tried to do a little less at the time, had there not been a cpc. Maybe tried to find 2 or 3 days a week. But it gave me a push to hang the keys up completely. Short answer, Yes!
My company didn't pay us to attend at the depot,it was holiday or a day unpaid.
Delays are a pain. It is a it show me tell me. It was the same for me, took a while for my card to arrive.
The best way to learn with HGV is from each other. That’s how I have learnt and I’ve been driving since 1964
I like many gave up driving as soon as I found out about the cpc that year was 2008 I was told by a bus driver that 2009 was going to be our turn they can stick it as I said we all said same thing we hated school when we were kids so why would we want to go back to school to learn what we all ready know
thinking about doing some trucking again - CPC ran out - nahhhh screw it
So for a 1 day course every year you would come back or are there more reasons?
it would be a 5 day course at my expense, for me the course should be free, if you want me in the cab 15 hours a day @@AshleyHaleUK
Don't blame you mate it's a shit job and you could earn more per hour working in aldi
You’re right ashley it crap it’s a money making scam doing on a Saturday in my own time I retire now but I wouldn’t if wasn’t for the cpc
But it's 1 day a year. Why is it an issue? What didn't you like about it?
@@AshleyHaleUK it’s boring i been doing the job since 1976 my employers never had any problems with my work so i should not have to do it Ashley i not lining some one else pockets
How much has changed since then? It's a genuine question for an upcoming video. Are the changes for the better or worse?
Then you got out of it what you needed to!
Hi mate,
I would like to see new car learner drivers get HGV Awareness Training.
I had to sit through 2 days of Tachograph training as the people who attended the second day hadn't done it.
Well said you are right absolutely ridiculous 🇬🇧
Doesn't happen often if you believe my wife! I'm never right!
Now retired from Class 1 driving but my 1st CPC I only did 4 courses and 3 of them were the same course. Totally pointless!
I get that. Enjoy a well earned rest. 🫡
We all said when it came in
We as the HGV drivers of 15 to 30 years on the road.
I get all of this. The course enjoyment depends on how it's delivered, and I'm guessing it is not delivered well by some people
A better way to deliver driver CPC should be on the job annual training. Quite simply, the driver CPC trainer goes out on the road with a driver for 1 day every year and delivers the training from the passenger seat.
I was a driver for years this another money making scheme same as drivers hours not needed
Parasite. Get a proper job.
Best thing to happen to the industry....now distance drivers do 2 weeks out ..... before the CPC ...6 weeks out was normal and sleeping in the truck...hours are less and money is better
It won't prevent some clampets browsing through their phone and going into stationary traffic and causing carnage.
I did my 4th cpc a few weeks ago.
Al! With a different company and each time the person running the course goes of the subject and talks about stuff that is not relevant to hgv driving and your not really interested in.
Time spent actually learning stuff is probably about 2 hours.
The problem with the "DCPC is crap/waste of time" etc arguments, is that when I've been on courses, there's always a driver or two or three that embarass themselves with their poor knowledge of tacho laws etc.
its true did a course 2 month ago and had multiple choice questions
That's good to know! Was it easy enough, any trick questions?
I’m leaving this year after 25 years of driving hgvs. It’s the cpc as the reason I’m leaving.
Did not bother renewing my HGV license dut to this money making racket. Went full time driving Construction plant for the last 8 years. Less stress and more money.
Our CPC instructor was a fireman doing a part time job I had done more miles in reverse than he’d done forward
You should plan your route better, stop going down so many wrong turns! 🤣🤣
I've been driving lorries for 26 yrs and would give the job up today if i could find something else i was good at due to all the shit that comes with driving including the cpc
There is always something else you can do. What else about driving do you hate?
@@AshleyHaleUK It's finding something you enjoy, pointless giving up a job to do something you hate. The standard of driving from other road users is getting worse by the day and nobody has any respect for hgv's anymore
@riz1512 find a job you like and you'll never work a day in your life!
@@AshleyHaleUK I still like driving but can't be doing with all the shit that comes with it
As far as I'm concerned cpc should only apply to the drivers that are driving in mainland Europe, as it is their directive. They are thousands of drivers that do not do their day job in mainland Europe.
In the position now where I have to renew my LGV licence and CPC. I would have considered doing so and driving again in the future but not keen at the expense of doing so.
It's not during the normal working week. It's at a weekend usually which is in our time off after being away all week!!!!!
So you should be paid for it and be taking a reduced weekly rest after doing a manual entry on your tacho card.
I packed in as soon as my cpc was due. 25 years experience gone!
So, one day in a class room a year and the haulage industry loses that?
