Interestingly enough, Maximum Doom had a few earlier builds of about 25% of TNT Evilution's maps in the collection. People who owned the Master Levels for Doom II had a Final Doom preview, and didn't even know it.
I don't find TNT Evilution boring because it has custom music, unlike the Plutonia Experiment which uses music from Doom and Doom 2. I get how enemy placement can be odd, especially since using the super shotgun on hitscanners can be overkill, so using the shotgun alone does the job right. And some maps have interesting concepts like "Wormhole" which gives you the illusion that you're time travelling, and you're revisiting the map in the future, or "Last Call" where you have to pick the right torch otherwise you'll teleport to a location with a voodoo doll causing you to telefrag yourself. The most hated maps I know are Metal and Habitat(for being ugly), and Mount Pain(for insane difficulty including monster placements and lack of health items). At least the good maps in the game were usually made by the Casali Bros., the same people who worked on The Plutonia Experiment. Also, TNT Evilution was known for some controversy where originally the game was going to become freeware, so that anyone can download the game and play the new custom maps. However, John Romero from ID Software wanted to make a profit out of it. So, he bought the rights of TNT Evilution from Team TNT, and started to commercialize it. The Doom community got pissy over it, since TNT Evilution is more like a mod for Doom 2. At least due to the QuakeCon from long ago, Final Doom was delisted, but you get Final Doom once you buy Doom 2.

Master levels for doom2 overall is worse. TNT has some bad bits, some pretty good bits and some average ones
