I played HROT a while ago, and adored it. the oppressive atmosphere througout the entire game kept me engaged, constantly looking forward for the next weird shit on my path. Excellent video on this, just subscribed
It's a good example of why so much media goes for an Eastern European aesthetic to depict oppressive environments. Much like with Nazi Germany the Soviet Empire was an aesthetic that was intentionally designed to be oppressive to people within it.
Got this game when it was in Early Access back before the other episodes were added. As a bit of a nerd it immediately snagged me with the historical context absolutely dripping from HROT, even in small background things, secrets in the game were also a blast. The cookery is fantastic as a little reward too.
Im very glad you went into the guys other games, i always feel that covering stuff outside of the main topic is just always helpfull if anything for sake of the historiy, i didnt even know about Legion . I actually laughed out loud at 27:50. That flying garbage bin is a refference to an old Czechoslovakian movie called "Srdečný pozdrav ze zeměkoule" ("Best regards from the Earth") that follows two aliens who pull Dr.Who at the very beggining of the film, and mask their spacecraft as one of those garbage bins.
I really liked the video but I have to disagree on one thing. The portrayal of soviet figures is not meant to make them look like tragic and they are certainly not there to be sympatized with. The stuff you see everywhere where Lenin and such are praised are real life propaganda that was plastered everywhere back then. I can assure you that Spytihněv is very much anti-communist and basically 98% of both Czechs and Slovaks are too because of what soviets did back in the last century and even couple of years back. Other than that I really enjoyed the video and you've made a really unique analysis. After watching this I will give Legie a try for sure. Thanks.

I made a comment and then deleted it purely because it highlighted my own ignorance. You have been making videos for years, and the quality of this one really does show it. Hrot is a banger of a shooter, played it ages ago when it first came out. Might just have to play it again
Thank you for this video! You really did understand the cultural influences and there are a lot of them in this game. So many of the locations, little stories, books, movies, iconography, historical references are represented in this game and for me as a Czech person it is really fun to explore all of this. Also it is really refreshing to hear that this game is not a soviet quake simulator like a lot of youtubers do.

I agree with the interpretation of the story that you presented, that of the main character defending their homeland from soviet agression without nescessarially being a critique of the Czech socialist experience. I love how the bias of the player affects their interpretation, this is mine being a Communist that both pays great respect to the Socialist experience but is also highly critical of its history. The event was symptom of a shift in soviet politics. This is what marked the invention of the word "tankie" after all. Instead of maintaining integrity through honesty and clear goals set on internal and international class struggle by a worker's government, Khrushchev's (and specially Brezhnev's on the military department) policies towards the SSR's and Varsovia Pact members were one of posturing, of using words as shields for ill-intended actions and use of force, instead of agitating, communicating and being activelly eager to seek solutions as equals with a shared goal of class independence towards a common end. With this in mind, it makes sense for the character to be a Communist Anti-Soviet agent rooting out Revisionism, as that was one of the wings fighting against the USSR during the Prague Spring. This fits with certain interactions of the main character has (mainly kissing a portrait of the Czech General Secretary, if I recall correctly). The representation of the enemies with radioactive-adjacent symbolism could be in reference to the way the Soviet idea of politics was rotting over time, becoming acceptable of some liberal market reforms while stagnating in the most important aspects of society (mainly worker control of the economy, in contrast with the politicaland economical caste that was forming due to the market reforms), in this way, the radiation "boiled" or "corrupted" that society over time, in a sense, with the enemies representing that contamination. Obviously also a reference to Chernobyl and the way that budget cuts put about 50 thousand people at risk (or a specific Czech event that i'm not aware about). There are also enemies in religious territory, maybe in reference to how the ortodox church was responsible for many of these liberalisations, and its relationship with the eastern-european Mob phenomena.
