    Fuller's ESB is, far and away, my favorite beer. My take on Fuller's ESB is based on brew notes from Keeling's '81 recipe, albeit way scaled down... I'm doing 86.5% Golden Promise, 7.5% Flaked Maize, 3% Crystal Medium, 1% Chocolate, with 2% Lyle's Golden (any invert would be fine, I imagine, and the original used Invert No. 3). The latter definitely helps with that warmth! I mash much higher, too, at 70C. My hops schedule is almost identical to yours, apart from I also add Target to go with the EKG for the dry hop (which I think I had heard in a Keeling interview, at some point, too).
    Haven't brewed this in a few years, as I had taken a break from the hobby, but I am in the process of sourcing my grain bill now. Looking forward to brew day, since I cannot find this lovely beer anywhere near where I currently live.

    I love bitters, among my favorite beer styles, simply because it has a ton of flavor with low ABV! Lovely brew day, and beautiful beer as always! I'd still drink it happily even if its missing that 1.5% ABV

      That’s a good way of putting it! It’s definitely got some flavour for the abv, but I guess I just hoped for a bit more!

    How fun! I'm sorry you were unhappy with the final beer. Both East Kent Goldings and Fuggles hops are sometimes called "malt-accentuating" hops as they re-inforce the earthy-ness and sweetness of barley, and you can use a great deal and think you didn't use any hops. The clarity of the final beer comes from the London ESB yeast, which is the strongest of the "beer-clarifying" yeasts, but adds earthiness that "muddies" lighter beers. The low alcohol content will prevent the hops oils from rising out of the beer and up to your nose. Suggestions: use demerara sugar early in the boil to get the ABV higher (sugar can increase "drinkability" but if added too late it will stay non-soluble and just collect in the foam). Add Aromatic Malt to increase smoothness. If you add too many dark malts, you may increase sweetness, and need to add more bittering hops to maintain "bitterness/sweetness" ratio balance. I recommend Galena as the ultimate bittering hop. Cheers!

      I didn't know that about EKG and Fuggles, that's very interesting that they reinforce the earthiness! Maybe I should have used a bit more in that case!
      That's a really good idea with the demerara sugar, I didn't want to add regular DME or anything as that gives a different sort of flavour, but Demerara would have really worked with this beer I think!

    Do you normally sparge using your garden hose?

      Honestly yeah pretty much all the time, I don’t have a hot liquor tank so I just use the hose and eyeball, seems to do the trick normally!

      Hah it’s an unfortunate necessity as the tap is too low to reliably pour from so I need a bit of wiggle room!

    A bitter isn't supposed to have aromatic hops. When I make my bitter it is 2oz (56 grams) Fuggle in at 60 minutes and nothing else. I agree that a bitter isn't the best style of beer and it is losing popularity lately. When I brought mine into my brew store, the owner loved it (and he loves classic British beers). Mine was a remake of a Bluebird Bitter by Conister Brewery. It was an ok beer, but too malty and the harsh finish didn't balance the beer out as well as I would have hoped. You know what was a fantastic beer? Black grog ale. I made a double batch (6 gallons) and I'm almost out of it. I didn't have wyeast available but I used White Labs 590 (1L starter 1.030g/ml) with great success.

      Interesting, I felt like after tasting the Fullers ESB it definitely smelt and tasted like there was a lot of aromatic hops in there! Maybe ill try again without!
      I'm so glad you loved the Black Grog Ale!! I know how you feel when its almost out and you're thinking oh man! Haha

    I brewed a SMaSH with a hop I was excited to try, and it tasted really good out of the fermenter. I rushed through and fined/kegged it too quickly though, and it turned into a diacetyl bomb. Dumped the whole keg. :(
