- Sooo I got an electric, definitely took huge influence from Yvette Young writing this boppy riff. I tried to imagine what it'd feel like to fly coming up with this. I hope everyone listening enjoys the vibe :)
So dope. Love seeing other black faces making emo music. Love this little tune
Yeah man! I'm just a guy playing the music I love. Music knows no color, unless it's tone color that is :)
The joy in ur playing is what makes this top notch dude!!!
Your face says it all. That riff came from the heart.
Thank you! I worked really hard on this one, it took well over a dozen takes to find the one that I really connected with :)
It feels like getting extra Yvette Young content. I love it!
That's so sweet, you literally made my day, thank you!
i thought the same thing!
Beautiful. And I love watching your facial expressions to the music. Keep playing❤️
this was genuinely gorgeous
I'm so glad you enjoyed it 😄
just stumbled upon your channel, super inspiring stuff man! Try learning Being Harsh by A.G. Cook, its right up your alley. Theres a tab on reddit too
If I could like your comment ten times fold I think I would. Thank you SO MUCH! I know what I'm working on tonight. I'm always listening for new music, and this sounds perfect... you're completely right, that folk-midwestern emo blend describes the chill side of my taste perfectly. If you know of any other music I might enjoy please let me know!
amazing would love to collab
For real, this is one of the most awesome riffs I have ever heard, and I keep coming back to it every few weeks. Especially the ending, just breathtaking. Wonderful work!!
That is one of the sweetest things anyone has ever had to say about these little ideas that I post. It warms my heart that people are still listening in. Your words are so inspiring! I have a few more works on the way, thank you so much for listening!
I love FACGCE tuning! It's immediately recognizable and beautiful and still so versatile. This video just came up on my recommended again, I hope you are still making music
It's by far my favorite alternate tuning, it's incredibly inspiring. The more I learn in it the more I find I'm able to write. And no worries, I am still making music! Sorry for the long wait for content... I'm taking my time to focus on my technique and tinker with a few pieces I'm working on
@@derrick.s :) that's good to hear. Practice is key, the internet can be patient for content. Will look forward to hearing what you choose to share in the future!
I love colourful and bubby this riff is, seriouly godlike
Thank you so much! I'm really glad you like the energy in this one :)
Love this! Keep up the amazing work :)
God, your face expresion... ha ha very emotional :))))
Haha yeah... I don't notice it until I record! If I try to suppress the weird faces the music doesn't sound the same though :)
when i get extra time, i like to go into my school's band rooms and play bass alongside your riffs, just fun ditties to jam with
That is so freaking cool! I'm glad you're able to jam along!
Best riff i've watched all week. The fact you learned in so little time just comes to show how passionate you are with guitar! Massive massive kudos, Derrick!
Came for the math rock
Stayed for the facial expressions.
Nice riff!
Haha glad you liked the riff and my weird guitar face man :)
Sick
Early on sounds a lot like the second part of Adventure Spirit ;-)
Do you tune and then put capo, or tune E G# etc and then capo to make it FAC etc?
For this song I tuned the open strings to FACGCE and then put capo on 1 :)
@@derrick.s Just like Yvette does in Adventure Spirit! Is this a matter of inspiration or is this actually a rather established alternative tuning?
@@joelwallenius2877 Yes, just like Adventure Spirit! It's one of my favorites. I definitely take huge influence from Yvette and her music, but I also learn other riffs in FACGCE that give me more ideas and chord shapes to apply to my own writing. I'd say it's a pretty established tuning in the Math rock and Midwestern emo genres. I like FACGCE because the base tuning sounds very dreamy, especially the natural harmonics (see ichika's math rock emo duet, I did a cover of it a few months ago).
I can’t get enough of this tone! Care to share your setup?
I meant to get back to your comment sorry! I'm actually just playing straight into my Hughes and Kettner amp in this one :)
The algorithm brought me back to this amazing piece again. Thank the gods. 🙏🤘
Cool man
this us beatiful! keep it up, bro)
Thanks a lot man! Will do :)
Your tone is so sick! Gives me a nostalgic feeling some how.
Didn't know Hannibal Burres plays guitar that good :)
Wack.
San Holo would have a FIELD DAY with this riff, great stuff 👍
Sick man, thank you! I love San Holo's work. I was just jamming to Lead Me Back earlier today
Nice, before I read the description I was going to compliment you and say it reminds me of Yvette Young. She's so awesome and Covet sticks around after shows to say hi to the fans. They have great energy inside and outside of their music.
She really is a once in a generation kind of artist. Nothing moves me like Yvette and Covet's work, I knew the second I heard Shibuya it was the style I wanted to teach myself. Still a long ways away from writing or playing at that level, but until then, her music is a hugely inspirational
Sick playing absolutely gorgeous telle my friend
That's so sweet! Thank you for listening friend :)
amazing i love it ur rly feelin it
That's a vibe
Humbuckers on the Telecaster creates a bitey, but melodic sound I can fuck with.
I thought the same thing, this tone isn't precisely what I want it to be yet. I'm pretty new to guitar (playing for a year), I'm still experimenting. I hope to switch to a single coil Ibanez soon, and maybe try a different amp. I just really needed an electric to get this decently recorded while it was still fresh in memory. I appreciate the feedback man :)
@@derrick.s Man one year? You played a lot. I have a feeling it’s just the beginning!
@@Zazoouu_Qc I hope so! I've never been into/practiced anything as much as I have the guitar. I played piano for two years before, but my progression has been WAY faster and smoother on this passion project. I definitely have a long way to go I think, the majority the time my playing is full of errors but the metronome and a stupid amount of repetition is helping with that. I'll keep at it :)
Wow stunning!
that TONE!!!!
Yuhhh
man I miss playing stuff fingersyle it always sounds so pretty, love this riff
Hey thanks man! Thanks for checking out my stuff. I share a similar sentiment that the tone of this one is not quite perfect, hopefully the vibe I'm going for came across ok. It's all a work in progress :)
@@derrick.s your tone is a vibe man I dig it, it was really sick to listen to!! I love the genre so if people have stuff published I'll listen haha
@@nesh-midwest Same man. I've only found Midwestern emo/math rock music in this past year, and it's like discovering the label for the type of music I've been listening to for years before, be it in anime soundtracks/openings or bands with a very similar vibe to the genre. Can't get enough of it!
”Near-to-perfection” riff
Thank you so much! Any advice to make it that little bit better? I'm still very new to songwriting, I'd actually really appreciate any constructive criticism
@@derrick.s what I mean is that it’s very good!! I don’t think it’s possible to write a perfect song as It’s a very personal thing and taste that is music. I really really love your riff. It’s really really really good. My best tip is: be yourself. And make music for you to like it before anyone else to like it. Someone will feel the truth and will connect to your heart rather than to your skills. Skills aren’t a bad thing. They’re just not the main thing in my opinion. The skills of translating heart into sounds is more important than going super fast on your guitar without making a single mistake. Try to create that feeling that you crave for. The more you’ll write the closer you’ll get to it. With this rift you touched my heart, i subbed. And I’m already hyped to see what you’ll be writing next.
@@derrick.s Man i just listened to you riff again and it’s crazy good. Keep upppp!!
@@Zazoouu_Qc That's beautifully summarized what I'm striving to achieve in my writing process so far; I'm just doing my best follow the sounds that make my feel alive, and that express who I am or what I'm feeling as a human being. It starts with how I want the music to make me feel, not theory or rigid drills. I really think you'll enjoy this next piece I've been working on :)
@@derrick.s I can’t wait to hear!
are you using a julia chorus pedal?
Nope! I'm just going clean into my amp with a bit of reverb. I think I may switch gear soon though, I'd like a bit of a less piercing/bright tone :)
@@derrick.s what amp you use? love your playing btw
@@nate7817 it's a Hughes and Kettner Tubemeister Deluxe 20. I think I'll switch to a Yamaha ac 10 or 30 like Yvette uses, and maybe use a single coil Ibanez and see if I can get a more precise (less "bitey") tone that I want
