I am musically illiterate, in a complete and total way. I don’t even hear half of what is offered in a song or performance. I first watched you in your recent Celine video. I was hoping that Celine was singing live, mainly because I am her age and was rooting for her health. But watching you was so riveting, engaging, endearing, that I got hooked on watching your videos. Many, many others have said it, and I echo it here: watching your joy while you listen to other performers is just so wonderful. In addition, I am learning how to hear and listen to music which is enriching my life so much1 Thank you ever so much, greetings from WA State USA

True. But ... also great "old school" bands sometimes used (without mentioning) studio musicians on their albums. You can find dubbed in applaus to suggest a “live” recording.
You mention The Stones: almost every vocal you hear on their "live" album "Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out" is an afterwards studio-recorded vocal.
As with so many things: something existed already, but the techniques have improved immensely.

Hi Fil, thanks again for the analyses and the honesty.
The constant growth of your channel speaks volumes about how much people are fed up with lies and souless performances, especially those like us, who grew up listening to real music.
Naturally, a wider audience also means more trolls and more delusional people who prefer to be told lies as long as it maintains their illusion alive.
But seeing the many supporting comments of newcomers give me hope.
Your polite, factual and pedagogic approach is widely appreciated by non-musicians listeners who wants to understand what it's all about, amateur musicians who find your videos and advices inspiring and also professional musicians.
After all, whatever the trolls are saying, it's nothing in comparison of being called " a dope cat" by Morris Hayes, considering the over-the-top musicians he worked with.

It makes me sad that you even have to explain this. I love your analyses. There are some artists that are good at lip-syncing and some not so good, so you can tell right away. There are some artists that employ every technical technique known to mankind. I like singers who sing with no artificial help because I want to admire and appreciate their voice. I love Celine and I knew beyond a shadow of a doubt she wasn't singing live at the Olympics. She has a terrific voice but, like you said, there's a myriad of reasons for using a recording. I love Elvis. When he was live, he was singing live. You can see it. His ability to put emotion into every single song is what pulled me in and kept me there all these years. That ability can never be captured by any artificial enhancements. Please continue to provide your insights the way you do. I learn so much and truly appreciate it.

Hi Fil. I just wanted to say I understand why you did this video, but your longtime subs know everything you said here is true. Having lived through the great music of the '50s - 90's, there is so much to have heard and watched being performed live. I haven't really ever found many (if any) bands/groups or appreciated music very much since the early 2000's. All of it is too perfect; the "life is gone." No soul or inspiration to me. Thank you for doing what you do. You are in the unfortunate position of delivering musical reality (to some) and therefore receive anger from fans who should direct it to the singers/musicians/producers. You are always fair and honest. Thank you for being you!

The first time I ever watched this channel, I'd previously watched some reaction videos, curious about how Gen Z'ers and millennials saw performances from the 60s and 70s in particular. It was immediately apparent that this is a channel that provides a technical analysis of music, and you are pretty clear that you are a musician looking at it from that perspective. So, a few things. 1. If someone doesn't want to look at technical details and just wants to enjoy a song, or doesn't care about the details, then watch something else--like the video of the actual song. 2. Analyses like these are good at illustrating why music these days feels and sounds "different" to those of us who grew up before autotune, pitch correction and the like. 3. I think you're pretty clear that using pitch correction, backing tracks, etc. is pretty standard these days--which is not a reflection on the artist.
In short, it feels like a "listening" problem. Anyone's favourite artist is not some kind of superhuman being that transcends the limits of human vocals, and the fact that it is being pointed out is not "trashing" the artist. If anything, it advocates allowing in so-called "mistakes" because they give the song actual feeling. This is a very clear explanation of what you do, but sadly reflects how many of the angry commenters are shooting from the hip without actually listening to what you're saying.

Agreed Fil, you can't argue against hard data. That's why I enjoy watching your videos. When an artist you're critiquing gets exposed to be lip syncing or using one of the many other tricks of the trade their fans should see this as a good thing. A lot of artist use these tricks and your videos Fil, give the viewers the insight to what's actually happening. You give us the tools to know what to listen for so the next time we watch a live performance we will know if and how it's been altered. You know what they say, knowledge is power. Knowing this can really help put things in proper perspective. So for those who want to become a professional singer can understand why they don't sound like their favorite singer. After watching your videos now for years I have a much greater respect for those singers/musicians that just stand there and sing their as** off without the need of any tricks. So if you feel your audience needs to hear it more, then so be it. But at this point, you have to bear in mind. The fact that some people are not going to like what you say, and yet they will continue to listen and enjoy your show. Too many people dislike such-and-such an artist or refuse to listen to a certain musical genre and then criticise them. I really like how you don't allow your own musical tastes to colour what you're saying about the performance or the voice. You feature a surprising range of performers, always objectively, and I always learn something new. Love it! Keep it coming 🤘

I am a new subscriber and I appreciate your analysis, because, you use a protocol which is using the same tool to reveal the in each case the actual "ID/Signature" of a "Recording". I beleive your work reveals this exact point and you always highlight the quality of each artist voices. Really really great job. ps hope my english teanslate my thaught properly. 🙂

This is why I've been watching you for years, I know you're telling the truth. I can't deal with people who aren't honest. It's sad that some people would rather hear a lie. Hope you have a great week, Fil 💙

I def trust your analysis, Fil. I believe your integrity should be evident to anyone who will objectively watch just a few videos. You have explained things so well to those of us who struggled at first to understand the graphs, etc. I have been subbed for quite a while now because your analysis is objective, interesting, and well-informed. Thanks for doing what you do!
