Why Is Luke Skywalker’s Lightsaber Forbidden!? ❌

  • Why is Luke Skywalker’s lightsaber actually forbidden and illegal?
See, when Luke lost his first lightsaber in The Empire Strikes Back, he needed to build a new one immediately!
But Kyber Crystals were really hard to come by and since the planet Illum was emptied by the Empire in 18 BBY, Luke didn’t have a direct source to get a Kyber crystal from.
So he did what he had to do and used an ancient Sith technique that used the Force and a Blast Furnace to make a Synthetic Crystal!
Now this method was heavily frowned upon by the Jedi Order and was considered illegal to do!
    But screw the Jedi Order!
Luke was all on his own at this time and could do whatever he wanted to!
And in the process of making his crystal, Luke was super nervous cuz he was opening himself to the methods of the Sith.
But even though his crystal wasn’t 100% attuned in the lightside of the Force, he was still successful in fully creating it and used it in his green lightsaber!

In Legends continuity, synthetic crystals did not have such a stigma in the Jedi Order, it's just that natural crystals were preferred. Luke even used a guide and tools Obi-Wan left for him. Synthetic crystals are preferred by Dark Side users because they can feed their hatred and Dark Side energies into the crystal to make it potentially more powerful and give it a rare chance to short out the blades of other lightsabers in combat. A synthetic crystal does not do this otherwise

Tattooine was one of the limited number of worlds that produced kyber crystals. That's why Luke was on Tattooine, crafting his new lightsaber in the deleted scene of ROTJ. The krayt dragons of Tattooine formed the large pearls as we saw in the second season of The Mandalorian. Well, those pearls were often formed around kyber crystals that the dragons would ingest as they tunneled through the ground. And that's now in legends. Canonically, Luke went to Obi Wan's desert hut and found the box containing the kyber crystal from Qui gon Jinn's lightsaber which Obi Wan held onto after his death at the hands of Darth Maul on Naboo. And that's why he had a green saber instead of blue.

Indeed. The blue saber did not show well against the blue sky in the Tatooine scenes, so as mainstreetsaint noted, Lucas said, "eh, make it green." Luke's saber is still blue on my RotJ movie poster.
Originally, all lightsabers were supposed to be blue. They made Vader's red just in case the audience had trouble figuring out who the bad guy was. Two different lightsaber colors also helped make clear who was doing what during a fight, (kind if like how when there is more than one saber on screen at a time, they will have different ignition sounds). I suspect that's why Obi-wan and Qui-gon had different colors too.

Yeah, I definitely remember seeing content that explained that it was Qui-gon's green crystal; I believe in some of the comics or literature there was an explanation that Obi-wan carried his master's lightsaber for a while after the events of TPM whilst building his second lightsaber and that he kept it as a memento, possibly even including some of the parts in his third and final one, with this being the source of the green crystal for Luke. Also, his experience having lost two lightsabers in combat I believe was the reason given for why he kept enough of a stockpile of parts to completely build a whole new one if need be, explaining why Luke found literally an entire saber's worth of parts in Obi-wan's hut.

Luke used it to replace his own lightsaber before saving Han Solo and company from Jabba's place. But Obi-Wan's lightsaber is never seen again in the phantom menace. So that's not a very good example to bring up from the movies. But also, like I said, I'm not familiar with all the lore. I'm just going off the movies and the novelization, at least what little I remember. Also, isn't Qiu-Gon's lightsaber in Kenobi? I thought we saw it buried with the rest? Imo you are wrong as I find the currently running canon comic line explaining how Luke got his kyber crystal more interesting. Luke as such a big character deserves his own kyber crystal as he already used a preused lightsaber.

I@@imperialesoberkommandoactually I find that it would be poetic that he used Qui Gon's lightsaber. He would use the weapon of the man solely responsible for his father's admission in the Jedi order, the jedi that eventually would also destroy the Order leading to the rise of the Empire. I wonder what Vader would think if he knew that when he fought his son Luke,he fought against Qui Gon's lightsaber

@@niccologregorutti9309 You do not need to wonder, just remember how Vader reacted to being confronted by Ahsoka, the very one he probably used to care for even more than Qui-Gon and not only recognized the arrogance of the Jedi but actually acted upon it the light side way by just leaving them. Vader did not care in the end. But Vader cared about Luke. Not because Luke carried on the philosophy of Ahsoka, Qui-Gon or whoever Anakin used to care for (one exception though), but solely because Luke is his very own son with that one mentioned exception - Padmé. And that furthermore adds to why Luke needs his own lightsaber with his very own kyber crystal imo.
Also in the extended canon material (already with hints in TCW) establishes that getting one's own kyber crystal is a significant step in a Jedi's path. The seeker finds a raw colorless kyber crystal and has to tame it through the force, giving it its color. This is of course something made up outside the movies, but I personally like this concept and it adds to Luke's journey in becoming a true Jedi.

@@imperialesoberkommando yeah I never expected Vader to turn to the light just because of this, however I recall that even years after his death Anakin was very attached to him and remembered him fondly. I think there is one single episode that links Vader with Qui Gon,when the first hears the voice of the force ghost of the latter. So would Anakin be in the right state of mind to fight Luke after knowing the origin of his lightsaber (origin that is dismissed by the canon but still, it's hypothetical)

In Legends, Luke used instructions from Obi-Wans hut to construct a synthetic, green crystal. In canon, however, synthetic crystals don't exist. So, either Luke found his own crystal, or he recycled one. A lot of fans believe that Luke found Qui-Gon's lightsaber and used his crystal.

  • @paulniederstadt4891

According to Legends , it’s because he used an artificially made crystal . This is how the Sith made their crystals and , like in Cannon , they poured their hate for the Jedi in to them turning the crystals red ( because they thought the naturally occurring Jedi crystals were inferior ) .

  • @CodFishay

Well the only way luke would’ve known to do this is if another Jedi had told him through the force, so it is technically the Jedi going against their own ways by telling Luke how to do this , which is pretty cool and good on them considering how uptight they were before
