  • This video was recorded on Friday August 16th, 2019 during Marion County's weekly growl test and Hancock County's weekly normal test. We recently discovered this siren that we didn't have mapped on the county line between Marion and Hancock County. The noisy road is the county line and the siren is on the Marion County side. The siren doesn't really fit into either system as the closest Hancock County system is Vernon Township's grid of 130's and this area is already covered by a Marion County siren. Not to mention, this siren puts them over the total that we thought they had in the county. And according to Google Maps, it was installed only a few years ago... but it's an SRN. Needless to say, I wanted to find out who set it off. The growl gave me my answer. I stuck around to hear Hancock County's 3 minute test afterwards where I could hear multiple Vernon Township 130's along with a 508 or two. The traffic noise was pretty horrible and then a water delivery truck decided it needed to back into a driveway at the end of the video.
Sirens in Marion County are tested audibly Monthly on the first Friday at 11am year round. They are grown/silent tested on the other Fridays. Marion County has a grid of 2001s of various ages that were either installed or moved and refurbished back in 2008.
Sirens in Hancock County are tested weekly on Friday at 11am when the temperature is over 32 degrees. Hancock County installed 21 508s over the last couple year to bring their total number of sirens in the county to 48. This greatly expanded their coverage into the rural and unincorporated parts of the county. Greenfield, the county seat, has a system of 7 2001s that they operate on their own. The rest of the sirens in the county are operated by County Dispatch. In the incorporated parts of the county, sirens are purchased by the jurisdiction. Throughout the rest of the county, Vernon Township is 100% covered by 10 130s along with a Vortex owned by McCordsville that predates the 2001s. Other towns have various smaller sirens with all 4 big manufacturers represented. The only non county-owned 508 is in New Palestine and it indirectly replaced their old H.O.R. siren that blew down in a windstorm in 2019.

They say outdoor warning sirens are not designed to be heard from indoors, but I could barely hear that!
