  • We review three rifles that sell in the UK for under £500: the Remington Model 783 in .243, the Savage Axis XP in .243, and the Winchester XPR in .270. Tim Pilbeam brings together a professional gamekeeper, Roy Foster, who wants a classic yet workaday rifle, and long-range specialist Mark '260rips' Ripley, who wants to knock over a fox at 300 yards as well as a deer at 100 metres. They put the rifles through their paces and reveal their favourites - and why.

    After sighting in at 60 feet, I could easily cover 5 shots with a nickel ruclips.net/user/postUgkxQt2uORDRfFOVSrO4idv4B90ThT6EOnEL ! Truly a pleasure to shoot! Scope was easy to adjust for eye relief. Only problem the varmints must have seen it delivered lol!Update: So impressed with shot groups at 30 yards I purchased a Hammers 3×9 with adjustable Objective scope! Now a true nail driver!

    I chose the Savage Axis because it felt great in-hand, was in a caliber I like (.30-06), and for $350usd, it came complete with entry-level yet serviceable Weaver scope, sling swivel studs and accutrigger...
    Once I added an after-market bipod, sling, and self-applied cammo paint job, *I absolutely love it!*

    I paid $280 plus tax for my Remington 783 chambered in 30-06 here in the United States. I have shot steel targets from 220 to 600 yards with mine. I also shot a coyote at 5 yards and a Whitetail buck at 262 yards this season. The adjustable trigger, steel detachable magazine, cylindrical receiver, pillar bedded/free floated stock, and magnum contour button rifled barrel make this rifle a steal for the money. I highly recommend this rifle to a new or experienced hunter.

      I picked up a new in the box 783 in 30\06 for 295 dollars. Put a bushnell 2 to 7 trophy scope on it and with good handloads i get 3 shot groups under a inch at 100 from that excellent trigger. Have had no issues those guys describe and the gun functions flawless. Most of these reviews are just too damn picky .Even a 2000 dollar kimber 82c super grade has teething problems at first.

    Friend of mine won two different Remington 783 rifles in two different raffles at the local bar, both in 223, both with optics included. He brought them up to the property for zeroing and shooting, it was quite interesting to say the least. Indeed, modern manufacturing has come so far that even cheap barrels and base guns are now surprisingly accurate, and during the good hours of daylight these cheap optics do very well. Even a market rifle like these is good enough that someone can get started and learn the basics with centerfire rifle, and good enough to take game during the season.
    But, I have to admit the gun felt cheap as all get out. I can't believe that the cheap glass on those rifles will hold up in the dark early and late hours of the hunt, and how they will hold up over the years of use I won't even ask. Most of all, the trigger was absolutely terrible, not just hard but it felt cheap and clunky. It was honestly shocking to have a bolt action rifle, and a modern sporter at that, with a worse trigger than my GI battle rifles. There's something great wrong when a FAL trigger, or the big wall on the G3's trigger to be pushed through, feels like an absolute delight compared to the chunky feel of the 783's I shot. Probably something that will get better with use, something maybe a skilled man could fix with a little work. Even the bolt was stiff and not smooth from the examples I shot. The rifles were good enough to hunt with, but you can tell they are cheap.
    Perhaps a good way to break younger people with less money into the sports, but for a lifetime investment you still have to shake your head sometimes. Good things spoil you I guess.

    I own both a remington 783 and a winchester xpr. The remington is in 22-250 and its my go to for coyote hunting and will be til its to old and worn to shoot anymore. I did have 2 more in 308 and 300wm and found the heavier calibers didnt perform as well as my 22-250. Still good rifles but my xpr is a 308 and its an absolute tack driver and havent had a single complaint yet.

    Good video. Need more of these comparisons with like or more evenly priced rifles to keep it fair. Budget rifle battles. The average guy looking for an affordable rifle will appreciate it. Thanks for sharing.
    My bet was on the Remington 783 also with the 700 series action and barrel but if the mag does not feed ammo that quality action and barrel makes no difference. Winchester XPR seems to be the winner due to reliability. If Remington straightens out the mag then that might be the winner. Remington is owned by Freedom Group and as a result of corporate tinkering with proven designs, has now declared bankruptcy. I have a Remington 700 BDL in .222 from before Remington was bought out and it is an outstanding rifle. Savage who is known for a reputation of accuracy in last place and I have two Axis rifles. Both had to have the flexible plastic stocks removed and replaced with aftermarket Boyds wood gun stocks and trigger jobs done to both. Now they are very good rifles. But we are talking about budget rifles that are about the cheapest on the US market so I expected to have to do some work on them to get them right. Savage is the cheapest of all three at $269 basic Axis rifle only. They were not horrible out of the box and are hunter accurate but certainly not bench rifles without stock replacements and trigger jobs. I have previously had an old Savage 110 so I know Savage rifles are very accurate.

    Where is the Mauser m18 and the sauer 100 classic

  • @cvcoco
    @cvcoco 4 года назад +3

    I think the Mauser 18 needs to be in all such comparisons now since the review market is saturated with the "usual suspects" which we just churn around in circles and dont learn anything to help zero a choice. I wish the makers would organize a field day to let shooters come and test them all for themselves. As you say, its not like we can take each home for two weeks and try them before buying. This is supposed to be the work of reviews but the reviews become lacking because each shooter has different desires and needs. Ive looked at so many .308 hunting vids and from them im unable to make a choice because when you think you have enough to make a decision, here comes the next vid that says your proposed choice is rubbish. Reviews are all we have and they have to be excellent to be worthwhile.

    • @fieldsportstv

      £500 = just under US$700, you need a gun licence in the UK (600,000 of us have one, so it's not hard). Suppressors are common here, usually sold separately. We are mainly a bird-hunting nation but we have good deer stalking - 6 species - and pest control including foxes and rabbits.

You and I maybe a little late for the rifles from CZ, they've stopped making any mauser action rifles unless they're the heavy magnum safari rifles, or mini mauser like 7.62x39, .223, .22 hornet, 6.5 Grendel. All 30-06, 270, 6x5x55, 243 rifles in FS and 550 American discontinued, there are still retailers selling this brand new rifles. I would scoop them up.
