Navigating Arabella Up Two Tricky Rivers - Episode 276 - Acorn to Arabella: Journey of a Wooden Boat
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 10 авг 2023
- A week of adventure! We conclude last week's sailing passage from Provincetown, Cape Cod, Massachusetts to Gloucester, Massachusetts, arriving on a mooring at the end of the day. From there, Robin found a sweet intracoastal passage on the Annisquam River, which connects Gloucester Harbor to Ipswich Bay. This makes a lot of firsts, including calling for bridge openings.
Two hours later, Arabella arrived in the Merrimack River, which is a tricky place for any boat to navigate because of rocks, intense currents, and at this time, perigean spring tides.
And finally, we get to see Steve and Robin adventure up into a marsh to check on some bait traps that Steve had set a few days prior, we have a dockside event for visitors to come aboard and feel the boat floating, and Steve shows how the water flows down and into the anchor locker when it's a particularly wet day outside.

Acorn to Arabella is a wooden boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve started as an amateur wooden boat builder building a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond-sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that classic wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY boatbuilding project will continue well past launch, when he and the crew will travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.

I know this might make editing more annoying, but would be great to see a map showing where these places you’re sailing to/from are when you’re sailing, for those of us on the other side of the world who aren’t that familiar with the area 😊
Try Marine Traffic or Google Earth, both of which have a search function.
That's a great idea. They could even collaborate with a maps oriented youtube channel for that.
There is a site called vesselfinder which tracks AIS data. AIS is basically a low jack for oil tankers and container ships, but some boats have them and sends data, but for small pleasure crafts like Arabella it is rarely enforced, so records are very sparse. Also, there is the privacy aspect. Steve and Arabella are internet famous, so there is an argument to be made to keep the exact location secret.
lol@@OscarSommerbo
I've already gotten into the habit of pulling up google maps at the beginning of an episode.
Ben has been doing a great job and deserves som kudos. Thanks Ben
We’re so grateful for him!
Kudos Son
This was the first time, I noticed Ben's name in the credits. Great job!
@@acp1866 it has always been listed since he was hired.
Was going to comment this about Ben, his editing is great and the music snippets he includes are beautiful. I was wondering if he plays these pieces on an instrument or does like me and uses midi?
The best part of this episode was where when I spied Steve reading my favorite fiction author, Patrick O'Brien in his bunk. Respect, Steve.
(long) I am not a sailor but I've been a subscriber for about 6 years, since just before the lead keel was poured. So many things to appreciate about my experience watching and living vicariously through the building of this wooden boat. The people are amazing Steve, Alix, Robin, Ann and Ben - and now Satchel and KP and the many others who seem more like family than friends and boatwrights. The music and editing are spot on and always leave me with a peaceful feeling, though there are now bittersweet and melancholy thoughts and feelings to go with each episode. Arabella has been my Friday morning coffee companion for so long I'm afraid I will be lost in the dream if she were to sail away and the channel stops. To you all, this sad and lonely old man thanks you from the bottom of my heart, you have brought joy into my life in a most unexpected way. Fair winds and following seas...
Cheers for being here!! Thank you for sharing your feelings.
I was surprised to hear that your insurance company required sailing experience and competency. I’ve owned numerous boats both power and sail over 4 decades and all the insurance company required was a check. You have a perfect boat to learn how to sail, Victoria. Small boats teach you very quickly and you’ll get a natural feel for sailing with the instant feedback. Some basics from an instructor and an hour or so sailing upwind and down in the harbor every day in under 10 mph of wind will give you the confidence and experience you need. Most of the best sailors in the world learned to sail in small boats.
My personal take on this: The requirements from the insurance company have exceeded anything in normal practice I’ve encountered, and I have no idea why or how they’re demanding what they have so far. It’s hard to relay all details, suffice to say that the basics you mention aren’t even what they’ve been focusing on. -Anne
Put a small hook on the underside of the hawse pipe cap and hand the chain on it. The weight of the chain will hold the cap on.
Yea, fresh water intrusion is the bane of wooden boats.
@@dennisbaecht7860 What's more, offshore with the bows plunging into green wavefronts, even a seeingly small leak can translate into a half-tonne of water per hour entering the locker. DIMHIKT!
So good seeing Robin and Steve settling into a routine and getting comfortable on Arabella. Keep the coffee maker fired up for Robin!
I'm with KP and Robin, coffee is essential.
Ben, you do an excellent job of editing and narrating Arabella’s activities. The many shots of various areas of the boat while underway answer a lot of questions we views ask ourselves while watching the construction phase. You really do a nice job, thank you. From Missouri, the “show me state” and you’re doing that very well.
Lovely vid that’s rich in vignettes of detail and such a chill soundtrack. Ben, you’re an absolute master at subtly crafting tranquility into everything you do. It’s a gift to be drawn along with it, thanks so much.
😎👍🍻
I'm happy to see Arabella out on the water. It's been great watching this channel over the years. Thanks for sharing.
Loved seeing Robin at the helm! Glad that she’s enjoying this Journey with Steve. Can’t wait to see Steve and Robin sail up to a mountain, set the hook 🪝, abd then go climb 🧗♀️ that mountain!!! Only to look back down to the trees 🌲 (Arabella). 🎉🎉🎉
A fine wake she makes, her lines are a benchmark for all doublenders. 😊❤😊
Seeing Arabella underway is great with the waters is basically calm. Watching a dream come true from land to sail makes those years of labor worth it all! Steve what a treat to see you and crew underway!!!!
Such a pleasure to see the farm forest timber and the rich gifts of Victoria being put to their intended uses on the water.
I concur
Absolutely correct!
I am waiting patiently ( we’ll, maybe a little anxiously) for someone to film Arabella full sail ,running along side her. I really found the footage inside on a rainy day strangely soothing.
Good Friday morning from Victoria BC. Thank you for this update! It's wonderful after all to see Arabella in motion and fulfilling the aspirations of so many craftsmen, dreamers, and followers of this amazing project. Steve and crew, enjoy these days and this time together, all these 'firsts' make life interesting and fun. Thanks for sharing the fun with us.
I love your giant reclined cockpit coamings/backrests. That looks like a super comfortable cockpit.
Always a pleasure to see this new episode of Arabella. Thanks guys, rest up Stephen.
It's been such an amazing path from watching the tree get felled, to sawing them, to steaming and bending, all the way to sailing.
I liked the gimbal video. Really shows the true movement of the boat.
Looks beautiful under sail. Happy Friday everyone from Plymouth UK
Happy Friday, Phil!
That was a beautiful episode, Arabella is so graceful on the water. I have been to Ipswich, but the one in Norfolk, on England's far East Coast. And in the same same County or Norfolk, the rain scenes reminded me of school cruising trips on the Norfolk Broads which are very much like those salt marshes. Great memories, and of Granby and Mattapoisett all rolled into one.
Hey Steve, Take your time, enjoy the process of learning to be a mariner. Not hard but the ocean and rivers can deal some funny stuff at times. Slow n Steady my friend!
What a crazy transition this must be! After years of cutting down trees and shaping lumber to suddenly being on the water, like ALL the time. Seems like it'll have to take months to catch up. With much aloha y'all...
Really!!!
That rainy footage with just ambient sound was awesome.
Your video is so well done I could almost feel the breeze flowing through my hair.
There is a powerful feeling to be the captain of your ship. Even with or without insurance companies. Thank you KP.
Dear Steve, Anne and all others who worked with the building of Arabella,
It is so beautiful to see Arabella sailing on the pure power of the wind. This is why the boat was made and so it must be great to be on board while sailing. The power of nature can be very disastrous as is currently going on weather problems worldwide, but luckily you can also make good use of the nature - like sailing. Thanks for sharing this. Willeke and I look forward to your next vlog and send you love from the Netherlands
The sound of silence is what I experience when under sail.
Your boat has a nice silence too. Cheers.
Looks like she sails just lovely!
What a beautiful part of the world thanks for showing us, I am really looking forward to seeing more of your cruise and exploration. The trip into the salt marsh was very special to me as I spent much of my childhood messing around a similar environment.
Spatula and a bucket with rope. Was so happy when Dusty (Cocker Spaniel) learned it was OK to go on deck. Made life easier.
It does! -Anne
right off the bat, the gimble yaw / roll is great! Level horizon is key
So satisfying to be able to watch the continued journey. As she goes through the water, I can't help but picture planks being riveted and rabbits carved. What an amazing story you all have created. ❤
Since Akiva has been sailing it seems he has mellowed out! What a Sea Dog.
We had huskies back in the day and they need space to run. Feeling bad for that boy.
@@dakotamax2 100% agree, Huskies generally are no good every day dogs to just hold at home
Awesome, man that tender is such a treasure and beauty....
Back in the day, I used to go to Gloucester to scuba dive for lobster. On one occasion, I believe I went through that drawbridge at 4:43. It looks very familiar to me.
I used to watch this for the woodworking. Now I watch for the zen.
When the shot of the rain hitting the window started, I almost went to sleep.
I still cannot comprehend that a few months ago you guys were planking and now you are sitting down doing some paperwork, floating on the water, sailing. It's surreal
Patrick o Brian should be mandatory reading on every ship on every ocean 😊😊
And ashore
I just would like to make this point. Naturally, because the USA is such a large country, it is often in the news and one hears about the wackier things that go on because they get more attention/clicks. It is, however, very heartwarming to see that there are plenty of normal human beings living there who look after their dogs etc, care for each other, and like to enjoy life slowly whilst helping others along the way. Ben has done a wonderful job in bringing this side of things to the fore. Keep being normal decent humans who just get on with their lives in the simple ways. 👍 from a Brit who feels he could happily fit in with these sort of folk
Aw thanks. It is still a little nutty here, but some folks are just loud, not great in number. Empathy and care exist. :) -Anne
Great! Now I can just sit back and enjoy the said...richard Normandy, Fra.
Imagine if KP flunked Steve from being able to captain his own boat? "I'm the Captain now!" 🤣
Following KP's conspicuous absence during the final frenetic months of boat building, what a remarkable recovery she has made now it's time to sail.
Then Steve can be KP’s flunky!
I should have taken the boat hostage and staged a mutiny! All with a double-sided insurance form.
No one knows why, but healing 80% almost over night (after getting Covid on top of the long Covid) couldn’t have been better timing. I’m grateful every day.
@@EdivisionI was thinking the EXACT same thing but didn't want to be the one to say it.
For some reason I had a sneaky suspicion months ago this was going to happen. 🤔
Form: "Knowledge of the boat and systems?"
KP: "Nah."
Akiva is living the best life. Huskies have such adventurous spirits, I love to see them out in the world enjoying everything.
Just wanted to tell you that my daughter and I have been watching Acorn to Arabella together since she was born and as of late Akiva is her favorite "kitty". (She's 1 year old so everything with fur is a kitty.)
😊love that, thanks so much for sharing.
It's amazing how weathered she looks already.
"companies don't think that's funny" - universal truth right there
Well done Team Arabella! So glad Akiva made made the transition to Sea Dog!
Oddly enough, when Akiva gets with the program, Arrabella will have a poop deck on the bow!
@@markryan4873 And the cockpit will become the furcastle!
@@anonymous_protagonist haha, don't forget pizzin on the mizzen
Harbor, river, and dinghy exploration is the GREATEST part of being a boat owner!! Go off the Grid Steve and enjoy every minute of it!! DD
The transition from building to exploring is fantastic to see. The edits are great as always Ben.
such a beautiful travel log. thank you for those wonderful pictures. i fully understand that the inperson is many times better. thank you also for the adult format forsaking fake drama and mindless comedy. today i was viewer number 3, i often am. your channel grounds my week and put into perspective the positive and hopeful aspects of life and the ability of individuals to find a common goal with respect for one another and true enjoyment of life's offerings. best wishes.
Trained our two dogs to"go" on board with some fake grass... used it ashore than transferred both the fake grass AND the droppings on board. They very quickly got the message and performed as required ever since even though they don't love being on board.
"wait here for tours"...love it
What an amazing week for you. You got beautiful shots of the scenery. Akiva looks like he is living his best life out there with his people. It really looks like you are learning fast how to run this beautiful craft. It does look like you need a new fish trap, That old one has seen better days. Are you keeping the old one for decorating your land home.? Maggie, Sarah and I are taking you guys kayaking on Canadice lake later today. I can't wait. Sarah's birthday was on the ninth so this is her birthday kayak trip. I never get to kayak on my birthday as it is December 30th and the lakes are frozen. So having her in August is a bonus when it comes to water activities. I'm anticipating new videos to see the new places you go. Still praying for your mom as well as everyone's safety out there on the water. See you next week and be well.
Have a good paddle, Kathy!!
It’s a so beautiful boat, lots of history ( Victorya)in a new life to explore all the oceans around this earth, I hope we will see here in Finland sometime in the future
Seeing Arabella under sail is still hard to imagine. I still see her in the boat shed as each step in her build took place. Victoria seems a very handy tender, Bob did his magic on her! You have a tough old water person in Captain KP. She needs an eye patch and a hook, during these training sessions though!!!!!!🥰

Love seeing it come to. Just sailed to Portland from Northport LI…was hoping to see you in real time as we ( Pearson 424) were heading east to west on the cape cod canal when you were heading west to east…but no luck. Fair winds and following Seas- Also shout out to KP who we met at Trader Joe’s just before she left for their adventure with you…lucky penny I would say!
Really good way to start one's Friday.
Happy Friday! Glad you’re here!
Great video as usual, wonderful scenery, if ever there was a smiling dog it surely is Akiva at 7.16, nice one.
Good luck Steve with your "Captains training" ,cheers from the UK.
Love you Steve beautiful boat beautiful scenery thank you for sharing
Wonderful to see Arabella sailing!
Excellent transitioning... building to sailing! Only way to experience is by doing! Go get'm tiger!
Thanks for this, I like to imagine how it would feel to sit in your new home on the water, quietly watching the rain, safe and sound.,,,,,,,,it was glorious.
SHE'S ALIVE!!!! 😀
Happy Friday evening, 'bella fam! Better late than never! 🥃
Indeeeeeed! There ya are! Happy Friday! 😁
Arabella looks like she moves well under sail , a good design should be quick and stable . A real treat seeing her underway .
Good morning Akiva 🐺 and Crew 😸😺 // Coffee is one of the highest priorities on any good boat ! ( or home anywhere ) I'm
glad to hear somebody has their priorities perfectly lined up !😻😹😺
😁🎉
Coffee and tacos. It's what I live for.
Coffee and rum!
Great font choice on the transitions. Not sure which one it is, but for being chuncky its rather aesthetic and clear to read.
New sailors and adventures and more Akiva... all I ask for as a long time viewer.
Crews first sail in open waters !
Still waiting on Akivas first on board inaugural statement 💩 about slip hazards of his first sale !
Akiva , Land Ho , I gotta go !
😎
North West Passage is open.... 🙂
I bet Steve will go for it next year!
I am very excited about the new stage of our boat.
I would also like to allow the humans attached the time and space to define the next stage. Bon travels see you there
I just really can’t believe I’ve watched something from cutting trees to sailing in the ocean congratulations all
i hope we'll continue to see more of the technical aspects of the boat. The sail plan and how efficiently it's working out, systems as they continue to be tweaked, etc.
We mentioned in this episode that that is coming. 👍
@@AcornToArabella oops, missed that mention. Thanks!
Relax a little Stephan it's good for you. We'll wait for you.
Another outstanding job Ben!
Arabella is paying U back in dividends, Steve! That little fishing trip down the river is why U built her! Enjoy the fruits of ur labor! Blessings 2 all involved in Arabella’s birth into theeorld! Fair winds & thanx 4 bringing us along! 👍❤️
Great video! Man I miss seeing these waters, and these videos have been a lifeline. Thank You!
"Welcome back aboard Arabella..." is such a beautiful thing to hear when opening these videos...
Think about that. So many years of hard work have paid off wonderfully with just four simple words...
"Welcome back aboard Arabella..."
I'll likely never see Arabella in person (unless you bring her into Lake Superior), but I felt as if I walked up the gangway myself when I heard those words today.
so nice. hope you are having fun
Coffee maker is definitely the most important part of any boat
KP with the between the legs neutral shift for the win!
Fair winds to you all!
It is nice to see her sailing! Also thank you for taking us along on the cruise.😊
Pee off the deck on the downwind side, Akiva... downwind side! 🤪 Just joking. Thanks again for the videos! 🙂
Good morning🎉
Excellent video, carryon!
Great Video !
So nice having a silent electric outboard… so relaxing.
Nice work, and you're making all the right moves, Stephen and crew!
my morning coffee back in bed in the dark felt nice an fuzzy with the rain out the window on Arabella😊
super relaxing guys .
Sailing is not for me but I'm up for a slow ride in a fast world....❤
It's a Nonsuch 30, right on! My family, and eventually I, had a very rare Nonsuch 354, a variant of the 33. Fantastic classic plastic, if you enjoy cats!
I don't need to be constantly entertained but enjoy being along for ride Thank you
The major advantage here for learning is that everybody helped build the boat and knows it literally inside and out. This only requires now how to actually USE the various pieces of equipment (including the entire boat as a single piece of equipment) and, the important part, how to correctly react when things don't go right and decisions have to be made as to what has to be done. THAT is going to take some time to get "soaked in" to the various jobs on the boat. Thus, you guys have a distinct advantage for learning from scratch that most landlubbers do not have! May all your hopes and dreams come true with minimum problems...
Its funny to think that while you were building her she looked huge and then, once at sea she looks tiny!
Love the salt marsh.
How fabulous to be able to just sail and enjoy the ride. You’re all looking very comfortable at the helm, keep going as every day is a school day.
Very cool. You guys are doing great!!
Awww happy Friday, Bill! I want a ride in the catboat!! 😁🙌🏼😊
Loving the journey. So hoping Steve, Robin and Akiva love sailing. It would be awful to find out otherwise.
I am so envious of your weather! I'm stuck here in Texas where it's over 100 every day with no rain in sight! Enjoy!!!
Hooo! 🔥
Kinda fun getting your feet wet, Ah! The North East I've never sailed so thanks for showing a little of the towns and folks there. O' I'm in the NW and west coast and Hawaii are my haunts.
Thanks again for share your sailing adventures.
Amazing job everyone!!! I love how it turned out and think its great that KP and the crew is along with you guys for the start!!!!!! Can't wait to see your travels!!!!!
KP is awesome! Learn a lot from that young-en! Best to y’all!!
That was very cool.
