Free rig made by Korean pro bass angler Sunpil Kim and he introduce it in 2006 KSA League. After few years Japanese anglers import it and start use 'free rig'. 'Free rig' is super popular ( No.1 ) rig in Korea and its very effective for any body of water like 'Texas rig'. When it compare to free rig & Texas rig, free rig can make more re-act motions.

I been fishing for 45 years and I'm always learning something new, I don't care how old a person is if you know you know and I want to learn, keep up the great work and videos, FISH-ON BROTHER
Awesome introduction vid for free rig! Only one thing to correct is that it was made/developed in S.Korea but introduced to the US market and tournaments by the Japanese pros. Ppl in Korea use free rig all the time because of that. We use texas rig to punch through cover but to read the bottom structures and stuff we always use free rig. Some pros in Korea points out that a lot of beginners are usung free rig too much, like an 1/8oz free rig on a spinning reel, a 1/4oz free rig on a M baitcating setup, and 3/8~1/2oz free rig on a MH baitcasting setup. Haha There is a setup+technique call the unbalanced free rig in Korea. It's a bit of a different setup, kinda like a ned rig of a free rig version, but the action of the lure is a lot different. This was also developed by a Korean pro. It's especially good when bass don't bite a regular 4~5 inch bait, and a ned rig is snagging too much. Plus you don't have to carry ned jigheads. We are using free rig on sea fishing also. For flounders, seabass and rock fish, when they are not eating jighead+soft plastics or are located around rocks and stuff, free rig is definitely better than jigheads.
I can see the success improving with using braid for its sensitivity along with a sensative rod. Here in South Africa in my home province we a lot of grass in our dams and fish weedless texas rigs( mostly unweighted) to prevent snags. I will try this rig next weekend for sure. Great video and channel! Peace.
Ideally, you would want to use a floating/bouyant soft plastic with the Free rig. That allows one to effectively work the entire water column; and be able to keep the bait in front of suspended fish for longer periods of time.
I have been using the free rig for about 2 years now. I have not thrown a texas rig since then. For me I have learned a few tricks that will separate myself from those who do use it. I'll just say this, dont fish the lure, fish the weight. Biggest fish I caught on this style so far is a 6.37 largemouth on a 7 in worm.
I'm with you. I'm a little strange in this aspect. If I'm fishing a spinning outfit, I'm reeling with my left hand. If I'm using casting gear I'm reeling with my right hand unless I'm pitching.
Tyler one rig I have not seen you talk about is the Jika Rig, aka Gika Rig or Jig Rig. Would love to see you do an in depth video on this great rig. I like it better than a Tokyo Rig. Great for pond fishing with a soft bottom to help keep the bait up bettern that a Texas Rig. Works great for punching mats and getting away with a lighter weight.
The Free rig was created in South Korea. I have been using only free rigs or jig heads for all my fishing for the past 25 years. Free rig fishing can be used in all water from flatfish, korea sea bass, and rockfish in the ocean to bm bass and ssogari in freshwater. As expected, Korea's world-class fishing skills are excellent. The number of people who fish in Korea is about 1/4 of the total.
First thing I noticed right away was you using a left hand retrieve! 😂 But it was short lived. Lol Used spinner reels forever, bought me a baitcaster this winter and learned on that and stuck with it. Now it’s just second nature. Love your videos! I will try this on my next day off in a couple days! 🤞🏻
I know your a true bass fisherman, mainly because of the hook tear in the front of your hoody! Lol seriously though i've been there! Lol.. I like this rig! Been texas rigging and drop shotting for years! I can def see the benefits to this rig! You could even peg the weight in certain cicumstances and it would be productive. That KVD fry bait reminds me of the old Riverside floating air fry. Still a killer bait if you can find a pack. Been discontinued for years. Thanks for sharing this rig! I will give it a go! Fish on!!
Awesome video man! Your master classes have absolutely been coming in clutch for me! I actually have started to use this technique and it is extremely effective! This deserves a shout out on my channel! Thanks man! 🎣 🔥 👀
I've been trying this rig out a bit lately. No luck yet. My experience has been that it lacks the sensitivity of the Carolina rig and the Texas rig. I think this might be due to the fact that the weight is being "muffled" by the soft plastic when dragged. When dragged, the weight is covered by the soft plastic, hence the "muffling". Not giving up yet. I think I need a more sensitive rod, and I need to hop more than drag.
I think you're right about the technique part. In all the videos I've watched, it's all about getting the weight separated from the bait so it can flutter down behind it (hence the wider bait recommendations). Hop it and drop your rod tip to give the weight slack to fall faster to the bottom and see how that works.
Id expect a rage craw to do well on this rig too, im going to try it out here in a hour or two. I dont have any other flat/wide soft plastics at the moment.
so I love your videos Tyler I've watched damn near every one for over 7 years now and I'm curious what size hooks do you usually use for angling also what weight weight do you recommend for the free rig? also i love my lews set up just like yours the best set up I've ever used by far.
I unknowingly tried the free rig, like, 10 years ago because I ran out of bullet weights. I thought it looked goofy but I caught fish. I've never used it again.
I did yesterday. Was real tough. You either land on the mega load or your don’t. I’m gonna wait a bit to go back out when the Shad spawn is going better
Why the left hand real? I've just purchased my first baitcasters one left and one right. I've heard more than a couple people say they wish they'd learned on left.
Can't you add a swivel to avoid line twist? I noticed you let line out to give it slack which lets it fall without resistance to the bottom and then reel the slack in * Try some wacky Japanese Insect baits like the Jackall RV Bug They also make one that looks like a wasp !!
You definitely have the right sinker. You need to add bobber stop after sinker however as this will protect knot and protect your expensive DAN sinker. I like straight shank hook with keeper best for this technique. Check out my tips sometime. Keep up great work. Scott YankeeLipper Fishing. 😁
I don’t understand the comparisons to the dropshot or the Carolina rig. The Texas rig sure, they’re very similar but compared to those other presentations it only has as much in common as the Texas rig.
It trails behind the weight like a Carolina rig, and when the weight is on the bottom for a split second it is in drop shot position. Just let me have a cool into 😂
Interesting rig but I see the "separation between the weight and bait" as creating slack line which hinders bite detection. The weight and bait hit the water, the weight sinks along your line to the bottom while the bait slowly falls creating more and more slack as it sinks. From your rod tip to the bait there's a big V with a ton of slack between the weight and the bait. Any bite you feel is after the fish has the bait, swims, and takes up the slack in your line, hence the "light bite" here. The slack gives the fish plenty of time to spit the bait out before you can set the hook. The term controlled slacklining describes what you do with a t-rig, jig, etc. and you can't do this with this rig.
I MasterClass from guy some guy in his 20s right. I love how you can regurgitate information and make it your own like you’re the real pro. That’s the problem.
