One tip I'll throw in ... When your senko gets ripped almost in half... Keep the stub. Texas rig it. Even if the 4/0 hook is as big as the stump. It casts well, it punches pretty well weightless... And it WORKS. Also makes economic sense to reuse the rejects.
I typically save them for winter Ned rigs but good as i am I never thought of that tip, it makes sense if they will hit a gravity bait that looks absolutely trash surely they'll hit half a stick bait.
So I started out self teaching as a homeless licenseless gorrilla angler just trying to feed myself. I didn't buy bait, I used discarded shore line baits... I thought I invented T-hook rigging... I'm not homeless anymore, haven't been in many years. I have a license with stamps/permits (some states require them for certain things) and permission to fish where I fish (or I fish high pressure public waters) and I just buy my tackle now... but because of where I came from... I have so many tips and tricks like _that_ and knowing I can tenkara-style-non-fly fish with literal sticks (like off from a tree) for example, that I never even questioned using half baits long enough to realize that others may not consider it.

Im 25 now, and it bears reiteration: SLOW IT DOWN. 4 years in and I have finally learned that you sometimes SHOULD leave a bait on the lakebed for 5 or even 10 seconds. You can let it fall all the way down. You can take a long pause between movements. You can wait for a few seconds until you actually feel the weight of the fish. You can take your time and watch your line go taut. This WILL catch you more fish with the correct bait. This video is a wealth of knowledge. Thanks as always BFHQ.
