Oh man this is actually 7 years old 😂 but still they’re a fairly new band. I’m excited for them to drop their 2nd album that they said they plan on releasing next year. Idk if Soft Spine is a one off or on the album. I know someone mentioned this but her husband/guitarist writes all of the music and tracks it. Guitar, bass, drums, synths. (Side note about bass: back in July their original bassist, Bill, unfortunately passed away 😢) Courtney does the lyrics and melodies/harmonies though. This is when they were more of a prog band. Idk if you’ve checked out Courtney’s first band Unicron or when she and Mike were in iwrestledabearonce but you’ll hear the evolution of her vocals there cause they’re very different from what she does in Spiritbox. I highly recommend listening to the singles EP as well as the two stand alone singles Rule Of Nines and Blessed Be if you haven’t already. (I’ve been subbed to you for a while but my memory sucks so idk if you’ve already done those lol) The Mara Effect Pt. 3 is the first song I ever heard by them and I was instantly hooked back in 2018. When they play that song live nowadays that last set of her saying “it’s the effect of the Mara” she does it in like a deathcore goblin scream. It’s wild. (Another fun fact, the static type sound you hear throughout the EP is a replica of what an actual spirit box sounds like.) This EP was also recorded in Mike’s parents basement which is wild considering the production is pretty good.) It also took me a while to realize Courtney was the vocalist that replaced the OG in iwrestledabearonce as I used to listen to them. But anyways great reaction as always and I’m glad you enjoyed it! And just one more thing and then I’m done ranting lol after you listen to the singles collection you should listen to the live studio performance they did for Sirius XM. They play some of these songs and singles collection songs and her vocals improved so much when they did that and it’s just SO GOOD.
I didn't get into Spiritbox until late 2022 but once I listened to this, I was completely sold... and became just a little bit obsessed with the band. Side note (as I'm watching), this came out in 2017. Also, saw someone mention Bill on bass. While he did play live (there is a great live pro shot version of the Mara Effect), Mike wrote and played the bass on this recording, as he has on every recording. He also writes the drum parts.
If you like all the pretty clean guitar stuff then you'd probably dig Tesseract if you've never checked them out, you can definitely hear a big influence on the earlier Spiritbox stuff...even with other aspects too like the riffs/grooves & the way their early songs are structured & have that "floaty/fluid" vibe smoothly transitioning between sections.
Dude, since you’re listening to their early stuff, PLEASE give a listen to their “Singles” EP, that is one of my all time favorites and each song on there is so diverse in sound and I hate that so many people overlook it. P.S. their self titled EP came out 2017 the RUclips upload is definitely recent.
Gotta do yourself a favor and check out the live version of the Mara Effect Trilogy. It's still my favorite thing Spiritbox has released
