I love seeing how Julia's experience with metal has shifted from being kinda scared of it to confused appreciation, then getting a deeper understanding of what's going on and now being (almost) a full blown metalhead
Seen it a lot lately with vocal coaches....starts with Nightwish, with Epica with Floor, which leads to Sabaton, then all bets are off, maybe Disturbed, which leads to Maiden, Sabbath, Dio and Metallica, and pretty much everyone else from Jinjer and Spiritbox and heavier bands
Reactions to Jinjer were big a few years back, specifically the Pisces live session. I seem to recall this was the first video I saw Julia having a 'confused' reaction to metal, and possibly her first video I ever saw
In case any other Spiritbox nerds haven't jumped in yet, I'm here! The Fear of Fear EP is one song in 6 distinct tracks. The songs all reference or echo each other lyrically and musically, and each track sonically leads into the next. The concept is about cycles and death, rebirth and breaking said cycles. Courtney is wearing (presumably) the shattered mirror from the Jaded video. The crimson key, mirrors, "too close, too late" are a few of the recurring themes. Courtney has said Ultraviolet is about waking up and deciding to break the cycle of death and rebirth ( but I think that can apply to any unconscious or destructive cycle) and confronting the Fear of Fear. Thw fear of experiencing fear which keeps us locked into patterns and habits. A few songs reference death as a conduit for something. Also, the very end of the Ultraviolet track loops back into the 1st song on the album, Cellar Door. It's a fantastic track and video with NO clean vocals. All of the videos are crafted well and go along with telling the story.
Hmm I just tried to loop the EP and while Ultraviolet and Cellar Door can be played in succession and it's not too jarring, other songs are way smoother in their succession, often having elements of the beginning of the next song present in the ending of the current one. It would be cool narratively if it was linked like the other songs are, implying the breaking of the death/rebirth cycle is itself a part of a bigger cycle, and would invert the message on its head, but I can't quite see it. You know, aside from the symbolism of the crawling bodies, some common lyrics etc, but those can be explained with a Cellar Door -> Ultraviolet link, rather than the opposite direction. All in all, I don't see a clear indication an "infinite" loop was an intention.
Spiritbox are absolutely sublime when it comes to melding pop composition with metal elements, and this song really demonstrates it. The driving synth, the drum work, the vocal melodies and layering, it all goes together so perfectly. I will say that there is another band who do the same thing just as well, and this year has absolutely been their year. Julia you owe it to yourself if nobody else to give Sleep Token another go to hear what they can really do. Either The Summoning or Take Me Back To Eden would really let you bask in the vocal skill and songwriting mastery they have going on. And there's no spiders in the video for either. As always, love your reactions!
Dylan is the videographer and this was one of his most ambitious music video shoots. Everything was done in a single shot. He had previously done videos for Spiritbox, namely Blessed Be, Constance, Hurt You.
I always love to hear your thoughts Julia! You should absolutely check out the rest of this EP - everything (videos, theme, lyrics, the songs themselves) is so well put together. Can't wait to see your next reaction!
Definitely need to check out the rest of the EP (even if you don't make videos on it, it's definitely my favorite metal release of the year. Highly recommend!)
I've heard Spiritbox before, but this song and video are new to me. Really impressive. Not least of which how Courtney can pull off being dressed as a disco ball, and it looks great. I should look into more from this EP.
Every song feels Unique in this EP imo. Some songs are really heavy, and some are more "vibe:ey" if that makes sense 😆 .... Each song links into the next one, even tho they are very different from one another. Also Courtney has said that there's a storyline thoughout the EP. But as usual it's up to the listener to figure out what it is :D Love this song, also very happy to see Julia back to Spiritbox again. I really enjoyed this, much Love! ♥
Always enjoy Julia's reactions. This has a different feel to the Spiritbox I have heard before. l Iike it. I like Courtney's lighter almost floaty voice. Very cool. I also enjoy listening to Julia find all the little things that make the music or the vocals so good. Her "concept bombs". Thanks for sharing with us. Look forward to the next one.
Please check out the whole EP even if not on the channel, EP needs to be listened through as one track. Lyrics from all songs on the EP are interconnected and there are music videos for each song.
Highly recommend checking out the rest of the EP! Each song flows into the next including this one as the closer flowing back into the opener. This one in my opinion has the best music video and is probably in my top 3 of the EP and one of my favorite Spiritbox songs from their catalog.
New bassist Josh Gilbert (ex- As I Lay Dying) is credited with background vocals on this song and the EP. This EP has harsh vocals too. "Cellar Door' is all harsh, "Jaded", my favorite, has a good mix of both clean and harsh.
So happy your back! Really missed the detail you give. Your facial reactions are often priceless. This was really good. I never listened to them before so thank you for that! Hope all is well. Take care! 🤟🍻
I've been listening to Spiritbox quite a bit since 2020, and Courtney is pretty damn amazing. Looking at the thumbnail for this reaction, I see you said "more of this, please." Well, if you want more clean singing from her, then you should check out the following: Secret Garden Constance (Good luck getting through it with dry eyes, though) Too Close/Too Late If you want full power screaming: Cellar Door Holy Roller Belcarra Bleach Bath If you want a 3 part song in one, check out The Mara Effect Live at Silverside Sound. That's a live playthrough of all 3 Mara Effect Parts, so live vocals, guitar, bass, and drums in one room running through all the parts. It's pretty awesome.
Hi Julia, good to have you back - I hadn’t heard this before, it’s a bit different from anything I’ve heard before from Spiritbox; I always like your rundown and reaction. I remember you liking The Warning, they performed live at the MTV VMA’s! They left the audience reeling, their performance was top notch!
You should give Tesseract - Legion a reaction. Their new album is insane and he's using some really interesting techniques, especially in Legion. I'd love to hear your take on it!
The whole EP is amazing. You probably wouldn’t enjoy Angel Eyes or Cellar Door as much. Both very dark and both brutally heavy. My favorite is Too Close/Too Late. I think you’d really enjoy that one.
Watching this video is my first time listening to this song and I predicted the song structure before it happened perfectly!! If only I were confident enough to show my face and do a reaction to this song or others that I have never heard and can predict exactly where they will go as I did to myself and my cat...lol It could have been a neat idea for a video... That said, from 8:21 it is heavily autotuned for effect, she can fkn sing! But this is nearly T-pain style - speaking of T-Pain - Julia....you NEED to react to his latest album where he does many covers and they are NOT AUTOTUNED!!! His voice is so good!! I always said I wished I could hear his real singing voice and finally he did it!
The guy who made the video is Dylan from VERSA films...he also mede the videos for blessed be, Constance, rule of nines and most of their older stuff. Fun fact: this video is strictly filmed in 60fps, they slowed down or sped up the playback and and sycrinised it to the song in the Post-pro. It's actually a one shot video except the last image.
You commenting on how it's difficult to sustain a note low in your range made me realize why Michael Mills' last "One" in "The Day That The World Breaks Down" is so brief! Because he's very low in his range, and well, very low also in absolute terms. But just being able to hit the note at all is very impressive considering how sky high his highest vocal layers there were.
For not only your RUclips reaction but also GRAMMY nomination, "Jaded" by Spiritbox. It's a nice mix of singing and screaming, and is also off The Fear of Fear EP.
Like others have mentioned, I hope you also check out Too Close/Too Late. It is my favorite track off the EP, especially vocally. I would love to see you do a full reaction to the EP.
Not everything on the EP sounds quite like this, but like everything they do, its all quite good...and there is absolutely a through line to the music...I think you would really enjoy it...
Okay this is a longshot to recommend but but Hey John whats Your name again by the devil wears prada. Its metal but the the vocals are done is absolutely stunning and the tempo sits perfectly into all of it.
Unrelated to this, I would love to hear a vocal coach react to one of the most legendary assortment of vocalists ever assembled - "We Are The World" 1985.
You should cover some more songs from this ep. I feel like Jaded and Angel Eyes would be good ones as between this and these 2 it shows how diverse in sounds the ep is.
Nice video reaction Julia. Can you do a video reaction to the Deftones? I thought you would have done one when you were a Bisbane Metal festival awhile back.
Great track love her voice here. Starts off with a pop feel. I don't mean that as a bad thing. There is some very good pop music. Some serious production going on here. If you want to try a new band that not many people seem to know yet. Revnoir. They have only released 3 song's so far. The 2nd one called "In Limbo" is a good place to start They are in the vain of Linkin park The singer has a great voice. You may like them. Aurora has a new song out "Your Blood" which is so good. Her vocal is Something else on this one. Always good to have a new reaction/Analysis from J N.👍. Thanks.
Helen Sjöholm - Du måste finnas (with subtitles) Emotional lyrics, facial expressions showing her feelings and an amazing voice as well as a great song. Please listen and react. I promise it'll be worth every second!
So, you should definitely do the songs/videos from TFoF in order. This EP is so good. Also should definitely check out the new Silent Planet Album “SuperBloom”
Unsure if anyones recommended Periphery to you yet, but Wax Wings is a really incredible song by them. In the same sort of realm as a decent bit of Spiritbox's stuff.
Hey! I would love to see you react to a-ha - Summer moved on live at oslo spektrum 2010 If you have not seen it you are in for a treat with the most insane longnote
Julia! You reacted a lot to Nightwish with Flor, once even with Annette, and never reacted to the origins of Nightwish with Tarja. and, after all, she is the very first vocalist, and only thanks to her operatic vocals Nightwish became a symphonic metal band. listen, even the phantom of the opera with Tarja, because you listened to flor.
Hi, Julia question / remark: If you like Floor (Nightwish) and Simone (Epica) Than I have something for you ! Check Ayreon !!! Begin with: Ayreon - The Day That The World Breaks Down - The Source (2017) song / composition 13min (sort) with 11 main singers also Floor and Simone ! After that Check Ayreon - Everybody Dies (Ayreon Universe) LIVE also with Floor ! I'm very, very, very sure you will like and love it ! And there much form Ayreon. It's Prog/ metal / rock of the highest level. all songs are a story line. So when you dive in not the order of the song ! If you want to see and hear the composer / creator, Arjen Anthony Lucassen then check the song: Ayreon - Garden of Emotions (Electric Castle Live And Other Tales) LIVE ! The first singer is Arjen ! If you want to see Marko (from Nightwish) Check Ayreon River of time (Universe). You Will LOVE it and want to see more and more......and more ! You only did one Ayreon !!!!
I love seeing how Julia's experience with metal has shifted from being kinda scared of it to confused appreciation, then getting a deeper understanding of what's going on and now being (almost) a full blown metalhead

@@dmj4966Yep, that is usually the progression
Metal still sux though

The "drowning" thing is so spot on. This song is luscious, gorgeous, and so, so good.
Please check out the whole EP even if not on the channel, EP needs to be listened through as one track. Lyrics from all songs on the EP are interconnected and there are music videos for each song.
Yay!! The new EP is such a great mixture about what they sound nowadays like! I really adore this song, because it is smooth, but lyrically so deep!
Highly recommend checking out the rest of the EP! Each song flows into the next including this one as the closer flowing back into the opener. This one in my opinion has the best music video and is probably in my top 3 of the EP and one of my favorite Spiritbox songs from their catalog.

Strongly agree.
Yes!!
This EP is phenomenal. Definitely worth listening to front to back and back again..
This really gives me dayseeker vibes. This is the direction I’d like to see them move in
The whole EP is amazing. You probably wouldn’t enjoy Angel Eyes or Cellar Door as much. Both very dark and both brutally heavy. My favorite is Too Close/Too Late. I think you’d really enjoy that one.
The band themselves said they're still trying to figure out what kind of band they are.
It's exciting to be along for the journey.
I think the word you're looking for is arpeggios. All the little background noises layered in. This really was masterfully written/choreographed.
The raw passion and energy in their music is undeniable🔥 Lately I can't stop listening to October Ends' new song. You need to react to it out 🔥

Great you are sticking with Spiritbox, just great Julia ✌️
Just got back from the Good Things festival, so this is going to finish the night off nicely
I can proudly say that I was the 1K like.
I really like your reviews and also like you.
Greetings from Chile
What a breakdown!
You're gonna love this ep. Although ultraviolet is the last track it feeds back into the first and keeps going in a circle
You commenting on how it's difficult to sustain a note low in your range made me realize why Michael Mills' last "One" in "The Day That The World Breaks Down" is so brief! Because he's very low in his range, and well, very low also in absolute terms.

What's even more impressive about this music video is that it's all one take
so impressive this video was shot in one take
Cellar Door off this EP is the next logical step. The whole EP is fantastic though.
For not only your RUclips reaction but also GRAMMY nomination, "Jaded" by Spiritbox. It's a nice mix of singing and screaming, and is also off The Fear of Fear EP.
Grammy nomination It cannot be a benchmark The song is good or not
I too am floating except I am in the sky skirting along the edge of a storm.
Wow am lovin this ❤️👍
They got the next grammy nomination ready.
Like others have mentioned, I hope you also check out Too Close/Too Late. It is my favorite track off the EP, especially vocally. I would love to see you do a full reaction to the EP.
It's the last song on the ep but with the sounds at the very end it actually loops back to the 1st song
Not everything on the EP sounds quite like this, but like everything they do, its all quite good...and there is absolutely a through line to the music...I think you would really enjoy it...
Another vote for Spiritbox! More please.
Okay this is a longshot to recommend but but Hey John whats Your name again by the devil wears prada. Its metal but the the vocals are done is absolutely stunning and the tempo sits perfectly into all of it.
I love your analysis and your insights on vocal technique. Pls react to red velvet on dingo killing voice and Wendy on lee mujin service!
Unrelated to this, I would love to hear a vocal coach react to one of the most legendary assortment of vocalists ever assembled - "We Are The World" 1985.
Spiritbox is known for joining the lyrics with music and with video throughout the whole album so if you noticed that its not a coincidence.
Julia + Spiritbox == a good day ❤
Too close /too late is another of the EP your should check out! It’s amazing!
You should check out the rest of this EP.
Just here to give a shout out to the Lady Lions - 2023 Premiers.
Also, can we just talk about the one-take video, with it's choreography?
You should cover some more songs from this ep. I feel like Jaded and Angel Eyes would be good ones as between this and these 2 it shows how diverse in sounds the ep is.
the one-take video is bonkers
They do this melodic rock then the next thing you get on the EP is Cellar Door which is pure death metal. Brilliant
Julia!!! ☮☮💜💜to you and to yours.
question, are we going to get any bad omens reactions lol (would love to see that!) :)
If you liked this then give Too Close/Too Late a listen.
Gotta check out Jaded! It’s their Grammy nominee track and for once in forever a band and song not in the mainstream who are deserving of it
Toad Sings Chandelier you'll cry for fun reasons
It would be so great if you'd take a look at Asking Alexandria's A Prophecy. Denis Stoff is a very interesting singer.
I want to see your face when you get to Cellar door or Angel eyes!
🤘🤘
fun fact: this video was shot in one continuous take.
Nice video reaction Julia. Can you do a video reaction to the Deftones? I thought you would have done one when you were a Bisbane Metal festival awhile back.

As a drummer, lotta str8 forward, with dif kicks - only kickdrum differs
If you're interested in what else might be sharing those "calming waters", check out Holy Roller, Cellar Door and/or Angel Eyes.😁
Lolololol.
So, you should definitely do the songs/videos from TFoF in order. This EP is so good. Also should definitely check out the new Silent Planet Album “SuperBloom”
Jaded is a must, not least for its grammy nom, Too Close/ Too Late is solid too.
Unsure if anyones recommended Periphery to you yet, but Wax Wings is a really incredible song by them. In the same sort of realm as a decent bit of Spiritbox's stuff.

You should do a reaction to Kasey Chambers cover of Eminem 's Lose Yourself! It's your national duty as an Aussie! 😉😉 Honestly it is amazing. 🔥🔥🔥🔥
👍 I like Spiritbox, but I prefer their heavy songs...If I exclude that they are Spiritbox, I like the musical feeling/experience.
