I know this is an old video but if you're still reading comments I want to thank you so much for this video! I was at wits end trying to install a new rear sight on my AK and figured someone has to know a better way. That someone was you. Thank you!
Man, you are my new hero. Thank you SO much! I have a fairly useless 8" HF drill press, and didnt have much clearance, but a normal short flathead screwdriver bit chucked up close, gave me plenty of clearance a good surface area. Don't take this the wrong way, but... I love you man...
YOU ARE A GENIUS! Thank you for sharing this technique. I couldn't stand the thought of hammering the sight off of my brand new Century Arms AK. So, I did it your way. Totally effortless and didn't booger up my gun or sights! Thanks again!
I don't have a drill press, tried holding it down the leaf spring with a flathead screwdriver but it was a little too big and hard to hold down. I ended up using a rubber mallet to bang it in and that worked after a few tries. Also for the record this was for my friend's AK not mine, and I believe he lost it in a boating accident.
I know this is an old video but your method of using a drill press to depress the leaf spring was awesome. I got my first WASR-10 AK and needed to remove the rear sight. This beats the hell outa using a hammer and screw driver. CHEERS!
This was by FAR the easiest method I've ever used. Laughably easy. I couldn't believe how fast I had it out, and with not a single scratch or mark on the gun.
Thanks, I wrestled with mine using a screwdriver trying to reinstall and finally used a 3 lb shop hammer and a price of scrap wood as a transfer block to get mine back in. Getting it out was no problem. I even have a drill press sitting in the floor that I have never mounted or used, still in the box. If and or when I have to do this again I will use this method .
just notice that the Krebs sight is thicker than factory AK, also if you radius the leading edge of the sight where it contacts spring its a lot easer to install. Slight mod that Krebs doesn't tell you ?
As usual, I'm the one person who this was a disaster for - depressed the spring and the old sight slid right out, slid the new one in and now no spring tension on the new sight unless it's up at the 90 degree position. In the 100 yd position you can pull it out pretty easily. Tired putting the old one back in and the same deal. The spring is still tight at the rearward point in the receiver, but the front edge is loose almost as it there should be something under the spring pushing it upward. I can't imagine depressing the spring could cause it to deform.
While I don't have a drillpress I could fit a scredriver in there and press it down myself. I only wish I'd look for this video before I scratched up my sight with a scredriver.
Thats the way a smart person does it ...im sure yuo could push that down with a screw driver or something thank you thats the right way do do it in anything if you have to beat and bang your doing it wrong..
Wow, If I only had a drill press handy. This technique should work great in the field...... even if I had a drill press it would take longer to set it up and do the job. Knocking it off with a punch and the mag works 100% of the time and takes like 1 minute. Man up buttercup.
Anyone brutally hammering his rear sight off his AK, should be charged with inciting mechanical hatred - and have all his guns taken away from them. The Drill press method is one I'll be using!

6 years later and your vid is still helping people like me.
By far best and safest way! No sight flying off and no hammer and screwdriver needed. Bravo!

Best tutorial on removing the rear sight. Tried other methods, but using a drill press and punch worked perfectly and was easy. Thank you for sharing.
This was by far the easiest way. Thank you man!
Just dont take your AK into a sears to use their display drill press for this. The police arrive quickly.
But ACE will understand!!

THANK YOU. Best video I've seen on this topic so far. Short, no talking for days like in some of the other videos out there, and very effective.
Awesome tip, thank you!
I used a flat screwdriver bit instead of a drill bit.
When I tried the screw driver method, the leaf spring got knocked out and now I can't put it back in securely (it's loose). Any idea?

What rear sight is that that you ended-up using.....with windage adjustments?
How do u put the iron sight back on? My leaf spring popped off & wont stay on anymore
I wonder if a C-clamp and a short bit would work?
Absolutely wonderful. The epitome of work smarter, not harder. 👍👍

What about for a GameFace 2005 AK47 AEG?

Excellent video on expediting removal of AK sight without the usual damage to finish. Thanks Sir.
What is this lever vor at 1:17 ?
lock lever to install / remove the gas tube......
What do gunsmiths do? Just wondering.
Wow!!! Awesome easy. Thanks so much!
I wish I could thumbs up more than once!!

A big C-clamp will do the trick too :)
*pulls drill press out of back pocket*
