I hate when video essays tell you they're gonna review and argue about a TV show and it's characters but they just read out loud the Wikipedia sinopsis from every episode
It's called "background", geez, you can't just assume everyone's up to speed right away.
That's why I start every video by giving a brief definition of all the words I plan to use in it, as well as the ten most common synonyms for each.
Like honestly you don't even REALLY need to explain the plot of the show unless your commentary is *about* the plot itself, rather than specific elements of it, the character themselves, performances, etc. in jenny Nicholson vampire diaries video she barely mentions the plot at all
i don't really mind when a super long video spends a bunch of time telling the story of each episode, but obviously it's dull if it's told without color or personality
@@idontneedaname318Agreed. Is the plot the focus of the discussion? Then sure, talk about it. Otherwise, I'd prefer it was only talked about when it actually matters.
At the same time, when the plot is the discussion topic, do we really need to hear every single bit of detail? Granted, that part might just be me in my circles being annoyed by hearing every little detail that is so much as brushed upon.
I had a moment where I realized that Pyrocynical's 7 hour video about Utopia left me with no desire to seek out the show for myself, because the entire thing was just a beat-for-beat summary of the entire show (with obnoxious zoomer-edits thrown in). I've really started resenting that style of essay, like "Why would you read Blood Meridian when you could watch somebody else describe Blood Meridian with meme edits to keep you interested?" type content. I think most "video essay" channels don't really know how an essay is actually supposed to be structured.

Back when I took a writing course for academia, they would have MURDERED me for implying more info on something would come later. It's supposedly a sign of poor structuring.
Its very strange how much intellectual content never uses basic writing rules.
You just have to phrase it right. "We'll get to that later" is poor form, but "the full implications of this will be examined in a later chapter" is every academic history book
I mean *written* and *oral* things in general have different rules and standards. Repetition and flagging are necessary in speech because we process stuff we hear different from stuff we're reading, in no small part because it's much easier to go back and look at something on the page.
Seriously, go look at the transcript of any given famous, world-changing speech and you'll see that many have "bad structure" as a written document. Because they weren't meant to be *read.*
I once saw a really bad video essay where the guy would constantly say "keep that in mind". Like, It got to a point that I had had to keep so many things in mind I got overwhelmed and gave up watching the video lol.

I love when a video essay features no less than 40 minutes of text on a screen being read to me.
Better yet, being read _inaccurately_ while the text is right there on the screen, making it glaringly obvious that the creator has barely even understood the text to begin with.

I feel like there WAS a hot minute where the only film RUclipsrs making big content were people who had done some studying and had thoughtful insights - at least, only good videos were getting wide dissemination. But it didn't last long before people saw a content mine and started just making long-form clickbait.
