Helloooo all! Sea-Gull watched the video and have sharpened their pencil on the price! They've adjusted the price in the listing to under $350USD. Cheers, Jody
I bought the all silver version a couple of years ago and it still remains my favourite dress watch. Wore it last Saturday to dinner. Love the sunburst and simple layout of the dial. I have an 8.5inch wrist so shouldn't by right suit, but I've never felt it was too small. Keep up the good work Jody.
Not saying that it is not a nice piece but you are right, it seems the Chinese don't want to sell watches anymore. At this time the Sea Gull official store asks 467 USD after discounts. That is not including the taxes to get it imported. For a Chinese watch with a misaligned date and the famous Aliexpress warranty... and a rough eta clone movement. No but thank you. My 2 last watches are a black PVD swiss Alpina Startimer automatic for 400 USD and a Casio Oceanus Titanium watch with marvelous finishing for 405 USD. Both new and with real warranty. Both are in a totally different league quality wise. And sea gull is not the only one with illusions of grandeur lately. Same with San Martin, have you seen these prices lately? 450 to 500+? For what? Homages with no originality at all? Still far from the finishing quality from the originals with mediocre quality control? Yeah right, good luck with that.
San Martin really let their success get to their head. At the end of the day they're a Chinese copier of famous watches. The only thing that separates them from Pagani, Steeldive, Cadisen and the other low priced Chinese brands is decent lume and QC (Also Cadisen has a few original designs).
It's sad, but that's the game, other micros will fill that gap. You get fantastic watches for your money nowadays, you just have to accept that every manufacturer will raise the prices sooner or later.
It's the way of the capitalist world, isn't it? In 2004 I bought a brand new Mühle Glashütte for 450 euros RRP, Swiss movement, sapphire, screw down crown, deployant clasp etc, etc. Nowadays that kind of money would barely buy you one of their replacement straps. Likewise with a Nomos Orion that I bought in Germany for 650 euros in 2005. That very same watch now goes for 1,600 euros! Why? Once these until then relatively obscure brands (from the former GDR) had carved out a niche and could take it from there, prices soared. Just because now it's the Chinese following our example, we baulk at this? Such nonsense.....
Joost Kiefte the way of the capitalistic world? More like the world of inflation. The value of the dollar or the euro isn't what it once was just like its buying power. What something cost 15-20 years ago was less because the value of the money purchasing it was worth more then compared to now.
5:18 The tool to get for those odd shaped screw on case backs, is the case back grippy ball. Usually comes in a blue color, kind of tacky feeling and soft. Press that up against the back of a case and gently start to turn and… Presto! Case back opened.
I think it's a stunner, however at that price it's a massive no from me....far too many other watches I'd pick up at that price before this.....🏴⌚🏴⌚
This is a beautiful watch. I think it competes with the Orient Bambino and has a standard lug width which could make it a strap monster. It also has a bit of history which is sure to please watch officianados. However, at nearly $400 I don't think it represents a good value compared to comparable Japanese brands. I can get a really nice Seiko for not much more probably from my local department store. Honestly, it would have to be a sub-$200 watch and closer to the $100 side to pique my interest. There are a lot of reissues at this price point that I would be more likely to consider.
It is a beauty but I see what you mean about the price 500 Canadian dollars, ouch! I really don't see them moving many at that price. Looking forward to the stream Friday. Cheers Jody!
My bet is that Sea-Gull is either testing the waters for the highest price point they can sell enough at the higher price to offset the bigger number of cheaper but less profit per unit sold. They are crafty with their sales campaigns as well! Great video as always!!! Keep them coming, and I will keep watching them!
I think it's actually because of the massive Chinese middle class that this watch exists. There's an appeal for them that we foreigners just don't have. Any foreign sales are a secondary consideration for Sea-Gull on this front.
@@JustOneMoreWatch To baseball fans it's almost like Celtic-Rangers, and the rivalry goes back to the 1880s when both teams were founded in New York. They both moved to California in the late 1950s and remain fierce rivals to this day. Great looking piece but you just can’t beat the Hamilton 38 mm Intra-Matic along with a 40mm Tissot Visodate in the various dial along with Gold/Silver cases. Not to mention a Seiko Cocktail or some killer microbrand options w/ Swiss mechanical movements. Price is high & rising especially considering your options but if you love something enough you should get it. Thanks for the video Jody , I’ve always appreciated Seagull, their movements and variety of models.
It should be noted that the caseback on that is retro styled and can definitely be taken off with a normal 3 tip caseback tool, though you've got to be very careful not to scratch it as the tool can easily slip
It's all been said, it's a 150 dollar watch at the most. Their movements are found in very let's say good value pieces like the Loreo for instance. There is no value in the watch and there are as good looking pieces out there for a lot less. The Bambino has been mentioned and even the Timex Marlin. People buy Chinese watches for the value in them, there's no value in that. You would be a mug to pay that for that.
The movement, strap and sapphire alone make this watch better than the bambino and a ton better than the marlin. Aside from making the water resistance better what could they do to make this watch better?
Prior to this second '51' reissue, Sea-Gull did released a limited run of FKDF model with sunburst silver grey dial and a red second hand, running on ST2130. Was priced below USD200 then.
I recently bought a Seagull for under 150 and it is fantastic. They have so many nice watches in their Ali store but their prices are all over the place. I'm willing to pay a bit more for a Seagull watch but not hundreds if I can get a different manufacturer with a Seagull movement
I have 3 watches it’s the ST-2130 movements. All run within a handful of seconds per day and all within .2ms beat error. I suspect the example here is not typical.
Beautiful watch. Reminds me of a vintage Omega Constellation. Size is also 10/10 for me. Sadly i dont think it's worth $400. Would consider at around $200.
This watch to me as a 60,s born kid reminds me how much watch styles/tastes for men have changed.I still own a 70,s sekonda that isnt a million a way asthetically and still runs.
Great review. Sea-Gull needs to establish themselves at least in the West before they can command competitive prices. Best t-shirt I’ve seen yet Jody. Go Giants all the way back to the World Series.
I've literally just picked up a Hamilton Intra Matic for just under 300usd here jn a Dubai outlet. At that price it puts this very much under pressure. Grey fumé dial and genuine eta movement. Its a beauty
I was in the market for a retro style watch with vintage looks and did look at this model. Then I found the Escapement Time Longines homage on Aliexpress. Beuatiful watch and half the price with PT5000 high beat movement.
It is absolutely gorgeous to look at and, agreed, that honey strap looks beautiful on it with the champagne dial and gold indices. Just a bit small for me..
Sea-Gull didn't represented Chinese watch, only Shanghai watch can represented a true Chinese watch with original design and in house movenment(which is still get develop and upgrade today) instead of these endless Clone of ETA for SeaGull. Like every other old watch barnd, these two brand are strat as high end watch only(as there were no low end watch concept at that time), and still do until current day with the price to match. The 51 is already consider as the entry level watch hence the price.
i have a vintage 17juan shanghai with the tongji (?) movement and also a seagull wu yi from the 2013 pattern. i love my seagull because it is tough and wearable, i am so scared of breaking my shanghai watch- it has no shock resistance at all

You are right, it looks great. Nice to see original stuff from China.Very expensive considering its only on leather, and we have vat to add making it more expensive than my Khaki king or my Tissot, both day date, bought in uk sale on bracelets. Dial reminds me of a recent purchase, a 1965 Rotary, same size too. That back looks like a good quality adjustable spanner will get it off.
This watch reminds me a lot of those early Seamasters and the Seikomatic collection from the 60’s. Crazy price tho… but it’s a pretty beautiful piece ☝️
It is a Longines homage, indeed. I really like the Longines Heritage range and tried to buy one of their 35mm models last year. But for $1300AUD used 😳
Very nice watch.. I was thinking..a video one several watches..different colors and styles all on 20mm straps. I have a few cheap timex weekenders and love the instant strap change and dial color to go with different outfits... Cheers.
very pretty watch, but price is bit up there and would have been better with 40mm size. Still I prefer to buy Orient Bambino. Thanks for the review Jody.
Seagull makes a watch called "Mount Everest" which in my opinion is a beautiful watch that didn't get much attention. People might not like the pricing but I'm glad they're moving up. hopefully with the price rise we get a rise in quality and design originality.
The Mount Everest is a watch very much inspired by the Patek Philippe Calatrava Pilot Travel Time. There's a whole genre of 'Type 20 Pilot' watches, most notably from Zenith.
Jody I just bought this with the gold case on Ali for 113$. It looks exactly the same. Same movement and dial, but it says it is a 38mm with a 19mm lug width. Did you look at that model when you reviewed this. Maybe it hadn't been released yet. It's helpful to go back years and look at your old reviews. Looking forward to your release! P.S I think the one I bought has more of a white dial than a champagne.
I was highly tempted by it until it was said it that it’s $400, that puts it in line with a Seiko Presage Cocktail Time and 50% more than a Vario Empire. I’ll be looking out for deals but even at the lower price it’s far too steep for what you get.
I gave up on Sea-Gull some years ago,I did buy a couple of their watches on their pre-AliExpress online shop. The first was the sub-brand Rodina for a nice Bauhaus clone, the second was the tank commander.I could have bought the 1963 but I felt the price was too high,I have however bought the Sugess version for a much more reasonable price.Sea-Gull have always been more expensive that other Chinese brands, they are after all the top dog in watch making over there..............................
That is a gorgeous, almost ideally designed and nicely spec'ed new "vintage" watch… that generated some oooh's and ahhhh's for me..... But that is a very problematic pricing scheme that pretty instantly extinguished my interest. Good review, mate! Thanks
I followed the link provided... it comes out to $518 CAD before duties, which isn't horrible, but Christopher Ward charges $780 CAD before duties for the Swiss made C63 Auto. The CW has better specs for not a whole lot more.
I blame you for the increase in prices. You have done such a great job in reviewing these watches that they realized that they have a quality product and that maybe they should charge more. So they have. Not just Sea-Gull but Pagani, Cadisen, even Loreo. Thanks Jody (said with dripping sarcasm)
It's a pretty popular brand in China, we're not the center of their attention. We poorly compare it to the aliexpress brands yet it has nothing to do with it, it's like saying a Hamilton is '' one of those Amazon watches ''. It's not to say that it will never drop in price, but that it will mostly be influenced by their own market, if that was to happen. They are in that testing the waters phase.
It's too expensive compared to other brands sold globally though. Seagull made 2824 is half the price of Swiss and that should be reflected in the sale price.
Woah that's a pricey little Chinese watch $ 249 or $ 299 sound much better than $400 I will definitely wait for the price to go down nice looking piece for sure 😀thank you again for reviewing this incredible sunburst effect on this little Sea gull👍👍now a my radar, ones again....
Well, it’s definitely very nice, and I’m still hankering after a Seagull 1963 (but still confused about provenance) , but I just got a delivery and I wanted to share with someone….anyone. You’ll do, you’re Scottish so have a heritage of world leading designs over the centuries, and short arms/ deep pockets…… It has a unique case back seal utilising a gasket, with the caseback held in place by a locking ring. Yes, I’ve got a Vostok Amphibia and I love it already.
I think that everyone in the biz who has watched Seiko's move upmarket has at least considered doing the same. Sea-gull is certainly no stranger to more expensive watches with their branding on the dial, and if this were a European watch we would be congratulating them for using an in-house movement. Sea-gull is happy to sell complete movements to lower-end producers, same as Seiko (or Citizen), and they might even have their own lower-end sister brands; but why not have a crack at the upper end of the budget watch market? If their market research has been good, they'll move product, and if they move product at the higher price point, good for them. They can pay their people a proper wage, maybe. If their pricing consultancy has been tempting them with tales of big numbers, and nobody's buying; then they'll have the prices down double-quick (as we can see wrt last year's model which, you'll have to agree, is so last year).
I own a Sea-Gull Ocean Star diver and half a dozen Seikos, including the Seiko Arnie and a 5kx. The Ocean Star is actually better-built and specced than all of my Seikos -- e.g., everything is aligned properly! It's ETA clone movement also has stayed within 1 to 3 seconds per day for three years now, which is better than any of my non-quartz Seikos. Sapphire instead of Hardlex, solid end link bracelet, etc. Unfortunately in the three years since I bought it, it went from being cheaper than Seiko to being almost as expensive as a Turtle. It's specced like a King Turtle, but still -- I'd have to agree with others that Sea-Gull can do well domestically at those prices but not with foreigners who are more familiar with Seiko.
These Chinese watches were supposed to be worn by common working class people back in the day so the price was much cheaper. This, however, is almost in luxury realm for common folks in China.
Seems like the price has dropped to much more sensible levels now. With coupons it's currently about £200, which seems very reasonable for what you get. If it features in a future sale I'll grab one.
I love the look of mid century watches. Which is why my collection’s second largest category is watches made between 1945 and 1970. The big problem is that a variety of that collection, including several genuine Omegas, cost less than this one. Almost all of them keep time to within 30 seconds a day, most much better than that. I have not spent much money on servicing, either- I only serviced two watches, a 1968 Rolex, and a 1975ish Omega Geneve. Buying things like this makes no sense in that light.

If I had any use for a dress watch, I would consider this one. Now that I am retired, dressing up means a polo shirt with a collar, instead of a t-shirt. Unless something takes an unexpected turn, I don’t see having any need for a dress watch. I have no problem wearing my Omega SMP with a suit if I need to dress for a wedding or funeral. If it was good enough for James Bond, it works for me!😀

Thanks
Loved it all the way up to the price....
I followed the link provided... it comes out to $518 CAD before duties, which isn't horrible, but Christopher Ward charges $780 CAD before duties for the Swiss made C63 Auto. The CW has better specs for not a whole lot more.
Looks just like the Timex Marlin reissue case.
Ha ha 😂 yes true , we need more bad reviews 👌
It's a pretty popular brand in China, we're not the center of their attention.
We poorly compare it to the aliexpress brands yet it has nothing to do with it, it's like saying a Hamilton is '' one of those Amazon watches ''.
It's not to say that it will never drop in price, but that it will mostly be influenced by their own market, if that was to happen. They are in that testing the waters phase.
It's too expensive compared to other brands sold globally though. Seagull made 2824 is half the price of Swiss and that should be reflected in the sale price.
Jody, you should be flattered: they know a positive review from you moves the market so they jacked the price in anticipation
Gorgeous watch! Just wish it was a little less expensive.
I'd go with the reissue.
Ahhh you got me Jody, you said affordable 😆 Okay relatively speaking I guess it is but I’m waiting for the under $300 sale my friend ✌🏼🇺🇸
Woah that's a pricey little Chinese watch $ 249 or $ 299 sound much better than $400 I will definitely wait for the price to go down nice looking piece for sure 😀thank you again for reviewing this incredible sunburst effect on this little Sea gull👍👍now a my radar, ones again....
that a real beautyfull Timex Marlin homage xD
Well Jody it's absolutely beautiful except for the lume "buggered off!" 😂 You do make me smile. Love from Leicestershire.
Well, it’s definitely very nice, and I’m still hankering after a Seagull 1963 (but still confused about provenance) , but I just got a delivery and I wanted to share with someone….anyone. You’ll do, you’re Scottish so have a heritage of world leading designs over the centuries, and short arms/ deep pockets……
It has a unique case back seal utilising a gasket, with the caseback held in place by a locking ring. Yes, I’ve got a Vostok Amphibia and I love it already.
Welcome to the cult, Comrade ;)
Na Zdorovie, Komandirskie. Top channel 🎖 🥇 🏅
I'll add it to my wish list for when there's a sale as $300 seems more reasonable to me. That dial is a 100% winner though!
Beautiful watch, but you’re bang on about the price being too high.
When the sales drag I’m sure that there will be a drop in price.
Wow, that is rather special. I don’t think the WR is an issue for this style, I agree on the value, doesn’t stack up
These Chinese watches were supposed to be worn by common working class people back in the day so the price was much cheaper. This, however, is almost in luxury realm for common folks in China.
Common folk in China wear Apple watches lol.
@@stuntmonkey00 he's talking about the 60s.
Seems like the price has dropped to much more sensible levels now. With coupons it's currently about £200, which seems very reasonable for what you get. If it features in a future sale I'll grab one.
❤️ the SF shirt
Looks great!
Wish there was an exhibition case back version.
I am a Dodger fan, I couldn't watch the video after seeing the Giants t-shirt. I kid, keep making great videos!
They also have one that has a golden shell with white dial. The dial might not be as nice as this one but probably more legible
Nice looking watch. With that dial color, perhaps blued hands would be better...?
Certainly a Timex marlin inspiration, yet sea-gull touches.
Definitely same era.
Better like this, last time we had parthenogenesis we got doomed for 2k+ years... 😋
@@stavros_katsopr As a Muslim and a scientist, virgin birth only occurs in other creatures, not humans as far as I'm aware. Allah gave Maryam, mother of Jesus, a virgin birth. That is the only exception. Jesus (Isa as), the son of Mary, did not cause coalition and only spread the injeel, the gospels given to him by Allah. After his "death"(risen to Allah/God), churches and archbishops spread false teachings of Jesus, the Messiah by creating the trinity. Jesus taught that God is one, yet the Christians after his preaching, taught God as 3. Jesus does not know the last hour, yet modern Christians (not Russian Orthodox) still believe Jesus, that was created by God, is God himself.
Anyway, with regards to your point with being doomed. Yes, that's true. But Sea-gull are experienced and skilful in manipulating previous designs and creating their "own" spin on it. 😉
@@JustOneMoreWatch most definitely 😏
@@Mr-Safology Hope i gave you a smile for a moment. Rest i don't care mate. Be well, whatever you believe in. Cheers
PS Smile, makes others worry... 🙂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣
Very nice watch but damn $400 US! Great material as usual J.
Great t-shirt Jody!
Oh and nice watch too!
Love it. Really. Just not the price...
Sea-gull is one of the best if no the best chinese watch brand, please someday review the tank commander and the ocean star, thank you very much 👍
I like the brand seagull since years, since the 60ies
hey jody, your link for the cheaper version (third link in the desc) is same as the second link.. it links to the 1963
If I had any use for a dress watch, I would consider this one.
If it was good enough for James Bond, it works for me!😀
You don’t need to dress up to wear a dress watch, a nice polo is just fine. In fact I think you don’t wear a diving suit with your SMP.
Jody, I don't know if it is just me but this is giving me serious Nivada Grenchen Antarctic vibes which, while an amount more expensive than this one, is one I feel like you would get a good amount of joy out of! Excellent review as ever, but at this price my money would be elsewhere
JODY! LOVE THAT SHIRT! Go SF GIANTS! ⚾️ 🔥
The price is indeed the limiting factor, but it's beautiful. Still got my eyes on the 1963 chrono though.
Lovely!
Superb watch, but for that price I'd go vintage though, Longines and even Omega with that look can be found.
Have you had your hands on the Sea-Gull Ocean Star diver? Be interested to know your thoughts 👍🏻
Love this one, looks fantastic though I fear it's a tad small for my liking
That really is gorgeous but an eye-watering price for still a very left-field choice.
Hey Jodi, did you consider reviewing other Chineses non-mushroom brand manufacturers like Shanghai watches and Beijing. They have a lot of nice vintage reissues.
BEAUTIFUL SIZE 37mm VERY GOOD ÓTIMO TAMANHO BOM RELÓGIO 👍👍👍 🇧🇷
Very pretty, my '63 will do me tho considering I picked it up for half this watches price.........
I'm pretty sure you can open the caseback with a rubber ball.
