Tom Smith well first of all happiness comes from within (you can find this truth in many teachings including stoicism and Buddhism) so to find this true happiness you need to learn to be at peace with yourself “love yourself” essentially. And to love yourself and be at peace with yourself you need to have a level of discipline so that you respect yourself and build confidence in your sense of worth. For example if you start your day off with a cold shower that takes some discipline especially on the days where that’s the last thing you want to do in the morning, you begin to be proud of yourself for conquering your inner demons and you’ll find a sense of inner peace. You can build on healthy habits and eventually through some strong awareness your mind will become impenetrable to negative thoughts. My idea of happiness is one where you are free from desire and impulse and can be comfortable in your skin anywhere you go, and always having a sense of love and empathy for all creatures, and an appreciation for something greater in life. For me to achieve this, a lifestyle in nature and helping others would be ideal. The veil on reality becomes lifted in somewhat of a spiritual sense I believe because when we have a sense of inner peace we just view the world with a different lens and everything has a glow about it when we feel fulfilled and happy.

You have to be able to do both. There is a period where you should be productive, but for many of us who are over productive have to learn how to let go. Find and strike a balance. I remember a month ago when I lost my job, I treated it as a good opportunity to work out even more than I had been this year (since COVID hit was able to take advantage of working from home and having a good work out regiment.)
How ever after doing a week of 2 a days after losing my job, I pushed to hard, and caused a major sciatic flare up injury from a previous injury. I took it that I needed to actually take a week and chill out. Watch movies and relax. Catch up on some sleep. For some of us stoicism comes almost too naturally and we need to remember to let go and relax. For some of us that’s even harder than learning to be stoic.

Asen asenov You mean shouldnt have been born?
Anyhow i agree with you, alot of this wisdom applies to ppl who are still within a reasonable space of what they’ve went through in their lives.
The reality is, life can break anyone and no one is “too strong” for that, that doesnt mean that this wisdom isnt amazing and great and most of us can gain from it BUT it applies to ppl who still haven’t been broken yet. Alot of ppl give themselves way too much credit for not being broken yet, but ppl who are or know someone who is broken simply know that they just didnt have the right mix of circumstances that will be able to break them, and they’re lucky for that.
At the end of the day , life has taught me that we all have our breaking point, just like we all die. If ur not there yet, know this! Your not a special snowflake, and no matter how strong u are, and how much you’ve persevered , you simply haven’t had the right mix of circumstances that will do the trick and break your ass for you!
No one and i mean no one, makes it in this life alone, everyone needs some luck and the right circumstances , hard work and grit not withstanding.

    Key points on mental toughness:
1)You are more powerful than God. In terms of your faculty. Be self-reliant don't depend on others.
2)Laziness and procrastination are unnatural. Laziness can lead to stagnation and deterioration of human spirits. If you are lazy than you don't love yourself enough. To destroy Laziness develop courage(Endurance, confidence, High- mindedness, cheerfulness and industriousness).
3)Contentment leads to mental stability. Don't crave for wanting anything.

Stoicism helps you control your emotions with the things you disagree with. But it doesn’t help you answer or handle the questions that you do agree with.

I'm starting to see Marcus Aurelius's point of view as a Stoic. Makes me wish he should've been my idol in my youth, but now I never have control of my past youth. No more than I can control opinions of anyone but myself.

The mind and body are connected and our mental wants need to reach into our need for action if we are to create a better mental environment for ourselves

Not only consumerism, but also be madly ambitious, laziness and disregard for everyone, are shoved through peer pressure. And many get angry, when you have your own goals and ignore their petty power struggles, you work and you care.

Abstract ideas help me more than the rigidity of religion. It gives me an opportunity to make my own version of it rather than religion changing a man against his nature.

Probably the only thing I don't like about great stoic thinkers is their sexist tone: man, man, man.
Open your eyes, look around and see how many women through the chapters of recorded history, have achieved feats no man could have.
Other than this, I like you all, Stoic Fathers, because you describe my traits precisely as they are! And thanks to considering your advice and hints I am getting more adept each and every day.

That's why i love stoicism. The philosophy put human in the same floor as other animal when talking about our obligation based on nature, which is live is not to feel "nice" but to do human responsibility. Instead of most religion that put human above anything else on Earth and saying that we are that special.
