Usually that quote would be picked apart due to the way I see things nowadays, mainly that bit about "your goat". But those are VERY old ways, no doubt passed down through the generations, when things weren't about "owning" other animals, just surviving and belonging WITH them. Living off the land and fully appreciating the life with and around other animals. When there wasn't any wretched factory farms, and genetically modified filth in regards to ghastly fast food 🤢🤮 Anyway, interesting saying that 👍
Indeed wow... That is why people keep suffering, even if they know there's another way. It's the hardest thing for me, to see a loved one in such a place, and not being able to help them.
BS. Because that is exactly the excuse the ciphers/minions/plebes give when their civil liberties or freedoms are taken. They give IN without any resistance. That saying IS a false premise. Accepting false prophets for the sake of saying "well, we can't change the situation so let's join or accept it" BS. It's a weak excuse.
@@rider65 You've miss understood the whole meaning. It DOESN'T mean "if you can't beat them, then join them". Take an addict for example, they will do everything to try make there situation better but eventually realise (not all do) that nothing they do makes there life better. The only option is to change something about themselves.... ie. The addiction. This might mean going back into childhood memories to bring up suppressed trauma or any other mindfulness that might be causing the problem. Your interpretation (I think) is "if you can't change an outcome then accept it and change yourself to live with it", which is not what that quote means
@@papahairy5315 No, I just don't subscribe to the limited thought process you do. I think with the frontal lobe. Not the limbic. People who believe this nonsense are emotional-physiological thinkers. Weak.
I see some people thinking that being stoic is not feeling or neglecting feelings, its not. Its about acknowledging your thoughts and feelings and not acting upon them. Often we see our thoughts as absolute truth, they are not. Thanks for taking the time to make these videos. I wish yall the best
I would like to add that often we see our feelings, not only our thoughts, as absolute truth as well. It is the ability to learn the distinction between the true thoughts and feelings with the illusionary ones that helps us make better choices.
I think naturally it is alot easier to bring this concept in to legitimize your feelings during hard times - while most of the time being stoic isn't so black and white and takes acceptance, patience and being humble. usually it's also far from easy despite having the appearance of being so!
'We can lose everything, from our wealth to our freedom of movement to our reputations. But our ability to form opinions, desire, hate ,accept, abstain, talk or keep silent remains our'. Another great video !
If you feel inadequate because someone rejects you, then you let them conquer you. You allowed your feelings to be at the mercy of someone else, when the sole person behind the wheel is truly only you. Stoic philosophy to me is about recognizing your own control, and with that, your own personal power and resilience. As I'm typing this I'm on the receiving end of rejection and it's taking all of my power not to let it get to me.
I was hoping someone would put up Victor Frankl's quote....about the freedom of your personal response to adversity. He has many. Here are some. "The one thing you can't take away from me is the way I choose to respond to what you do to me. The last of one's freedoms is to choose one's attitude in any given situation." "When we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves." "Forces beyond your control can take away everything you possess except one thing, your freedom to choose how you will respond to the situation." "Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom."
That quote is from the late Robert Schuller. He was a positive thinker and a minister with his own church. His son took over when his dad passed. Another saying from him was IF IT'S GOING TO BE IT'S UP TO ME

Practicing stoicism to be independent from my immature parents feels like eternal hell, but I keep hoping that there will be light at the end of the tunnel.
I'm in the same boat bro, you're not alone, it's hard but not impossible, keep it up and I promise you it will all be worth it in the end. There *is* light at the end of the tunnel, you just have to keep on going
There's no need to hope. I promise you, the end of the tunnel is a nice and bright exit to greener pastures. Keep up the stoic practice. You will be ok 🙂
I will put it to you this way: you would not dare put yourself in hell unless you had already seen the light. The light is ubiquitous because light makes up every place. If you have seen anything, then you have seen the light, but to understand the light is something else. You are supposed to be the light.
If you're naturally able to be a generally good person who wants to help others and the world and you apply this advice the best you can, i don't even know what to say but this is a fantastic combo to have and is much needed.
When i lost everything i had in the 'mortgage crisis ', I had to rebuild my life from scratch . Overtime I learned to be happy with far less . After a few years, i even noticed i had far less worries because i had less to loose. .Enduring Torture however, is something that's easy to contemplate from the comfort of the couch . Not something i like to test in real life !
Yeah I thought that “sage” was pretty arrogant when he mentioned the stuff about torture and how he wouldn’t break. All I could think was “yeah right”.
Alot of people misunderstand stoicism as simply enduring the worst of things and letting things happen. That's not being stoic. That's being a doormat. Being stoic is about being able to endure terrible things while having the capacity to do something about it.
To the *incredible person* seeing this, I wish you all the best in life❤ don't over blame yourself, accept things and go forward. Don't let others define what “success” is for you. Get up, learn the skills needed and get after it, all the keys to a happy life is in your hands. Keep pushing.
Thanks my friend I really appreciate you writing this for I needed it more than you know. When you ask for a sign you shall receive it. I hope your days are plenty and full of love and happiness!
Thanks for this. I'd almost given up my dream of being the worlds most prolific serial killer but you've given me the motivation to keep pushing to achieve my dream no matter what
"We put ourselves in the mercy of external factors" havent heard a more real quote for some time. I tried so hard to be with that one person which saw that, and used to emotionally manipulate me and play with my feelings. After some years away from that, I still say to myself "Never again will I put my feelings and life into someone elses hands".
Stoicism is what keeps me going during my hard times. I haven't always had the words to describe it, but I am always seeking to stand tall when faced with degradation, pain, and hardship. I love learning more about what that means for me.
I had once screamed, gradually, I lost my voice. I had once cried, gradually, I lost my tears. I had once grieved, gradually, I became able to withstand everything. I had once rejoiced, gradually, I became unmoved by the world. And now! All I have left is an expressionless face, my gaze is as tough as a monolith, only perseverance remains in my heart. This is my own, an insignificant character, Fang Yuan’s - Perseverance! Stoicism lets you overcome, but it cannot make you happy. It is a backstop
I have been working the majority of my adult life to achieve this exact thing! I have made great progress from the extremely reactive child I used to be to now where I no longer feel the need for the last word, or even caring about rumors folks who would slander me, though I do know when to stand up and defend myself when needed, but even then I keep it purely factual on my end, and usually let folks bury themselves. I have also been trying to impart this to my child because I feel like in todays overly emotional world, being able to react with thought and reason over simply reacting to emotions will make her unstoppable!
Anger: ggrrrr Me:.... Anger: GGGGRRRRR Me: .... Repeat for years My heart: 🌋 Careful kids... being angry is not bad. Reacting to it in an unthought out manner is. Too many think stoicism means not feeling anything or being in denial of feeling anything. I can not express enough how dangerous this method is. If you do not handle your feelings and emotions it builds in the body and creates a vast array of destruction that can some times be irreversible. Make sure you have a healthy outlet. And don't lie to yourself about being angry or upset. This method can be valuable if used correctly.
I needed this. I have been giving in to my anger and desires a lot more lately with all that is going on in the world. I had forgotten that everything was happening prior but one thing has changed, my will to continue to resist and overcome. I was losing that lately. Thank you!
I just lost everything, and this video gave me the outlook I need to overcome the mental burden of self-sabotating further due to "insurmountable" odds. It literally happened so fast, one weekend was all it took for my whole ship to capsize metaphorically. I appreciate readily available content such as yours, and thank you for what strength your video has inadvertently given me.
While I think that it's true that removing emotional attachments to things can make you unconquerable, because you are not hurt if you lose said things, I also think that it's extremely difficult, if not impossible, to not have some sort of emotional attachment to at least one item or person or place. This philosophy reveals that loving someone or falling in love with someone is a risk to oneself, because now you've made yourself vulnerable to being hurt if that person chooses to hurt you (an emotionally strong person generally doesn't care what others think of them, but even said person can be hurt if they are betrayed by someone they care about). You also understand that you will be hurt if that person dies or experiences some form of pain themselves. In other words, to love someone, whether it's a family member, friend, lover, etc., is a selfless act, because you risk your own soul when you are attached to theirs.
When it comes to doubt, rejection, or disrespect I've learned that it's not wrong to be upset but it's a waste of time to target the people who have hurt you. If you have enough self-control and maturity, anger and spite make excellent motivators. When someone hurts me in any way, I try to reframe it as an excuse for self-improvement. At the end of the day, I pushed myself to be stronger at something, and it might not be my goal but if I can prove someone wrong or make the person who hurt me feel bad, that's bonus points.
True, though I regret to admit that I still let people get to me even when I know I can't control others actions it still bothers me when I know I could be better. Though the one thing that crosses the last line of defense as the video put it I guess would be, when someone threatens or talks bad about those I care about. Life is full of pain but when it's my pain idc about it, but when it's another's I tend to flip.... still don't know how to combat that
True. I'm already dealing with an armchair expert who gets all their information from the news. They lack mental capacity to examine the facts. In the end I stopped listening to the empty ramblings.
Stupid people refuse to do their own research for things and would rather someone tell them and even after they still won't understand or even may continue doing something the same way. (Ignorance is a choice) Always do your own research And figure out why things are done the way their done or why a person might explain something to you a certain way. The average person like the smart person takes all information founded into consideration However, the average person will only take the information given to him and put it to use While the smart person may take the next step up with it. Stupid people you can't group them. We are all stupid in our own ways We all have our own shortcomings, flaws weaknesses Things we aren't good at and or don't work on enough. In the end we are all people on this earth together No matter the environment we find ourselves in Some more comprehensive than others But, the general rules of thumb are mainly all the same. Not sure what else I could add to this lol
"What you gain, you lose and what you lose, you also gain." Something I should have internalized a long time ago. Heard it as a teenager and never took it to heart until about a year ago.

For my case, I'm happy to report that I have become unconquerable by my own means, and now life is better than ever. The ability of the Only Ring was also to grant Power, and it was that Power, not the Ring itself, that was so desired. The power not only to turn invisible, but also to appear powerfull and dominating to others, power to control other people and change the world as one sees fit. This power is something that everyone in the world secretly desires, even if just a little bit, but as you gain this ability, usually with intentions to do good, to change the world for the better, you lose perception of how to be one without that power, and it's very hard to identify with those you don't understand. This is explored excellently in a video game "Frostpunk", in which you claim complete control over a city that's facing a terrible crisis, and you can change it as you can see fit in order to save it's inhabitants, or realise your visions- or simply avoid "game over" which is when the people of the city are fed up with your rule and exile or execute you. The game gives you a choice to do what's right or what's pragmatic, with morally dubious choices offering higher boost to your city's survivability, economy, and your ability to remain in power. Making morally bad choices gives you practically no repercussions, and being morally good sometimes even punishes you- after all, if you had sent your children into coal mines, your people wouldn't be freezing right now. Being evil seems to be the right way to go. But if you listen to your people, your perspective might change. If you choose to estabilish places for children to stay safe during working hours, instead of sending them to work, you receive a letter with thanks from a mother, who back in London had to send her child to a mine for their family to not starve. If you estabilish a propaganda agency, a engineer will start writing about how you're turning citisens into slaves- and unless you want unrest to rise, you need to exile him, which in the cold and unforgiving world means certain death of a well-meaning man. In the end, Frostpunk is about making the best of a bad situation, and about paying a price for the survival of your city- what and who will you sacrifice to atone for your mistakes?
I am in a big transision of my life for my first time, it’s kind of challenging for me. I am confuse and shock, depression came and I don’t know what I have to do for my life. But somehow I directed to learn how stoic work, I learn it and try to accepting myself over my external circumstances. It’s hard, really hard for my first time. As before I let other people controled me and now I am free but don’t know what to do is a big big transision for me, as a Frankl said to his book. I want to say, all videos of this channel made me realize something inside me, and it is guide me when I don’t know how to do and what’s wrong with me. So, thank you so much. It mean a lot for me.
When I had my 'awakening', I felt so alone, lost, depressed, basically almost every negative emotion under the sun. Things that interested me before didnt interest me anymore, my former self faded away and I had to basically remake myself but I became more grounded, disciplined, willed and possessed an attitude to improve. This was nearly 2 years ago. Its tough at first to transition and you will feel absolutely awful but believe me, keep at it and you will become a better person from it. Good luck on your journey!
I don't think this is actually true. Stoicism is overly idealistic imo. It paints the picture of something we can never fully achieve and isn't really grounded in reality.
Without my knowing, my parents raised me as a Stoic. I have been secure in my mind and not felt insecure throughout my life. An interest in Martial Arts and related philosophies has only added to this. I am unconquerable, the world does not affect me negatively, peoples opinions are irrelevant, material possessions mean nothing, my body is just a meat bag. KRSNA consciousness in conjunction with Stoicism creates freedom. You cannot coerce me, you cannot threaten me, you cannot buy me with power, money, sex or drugs. I feel emotions but are not swayed by them. If you kill me, I still defy you. The Fremen from Dune are a great example of this. The people in the comments who say you cannot live like this are weak and without commitment. They envy those who are truly free. It is not easy but something of worth never is. This does not make me better than everyone, just free and secure in who I am.
"The people in the comments who say you cannot live like this are weak" - i do not agree with this or do deny it. I rather say they are ignorant because i learnt that literally anything is possible once we carve our illusions. GL out there
@@decode9160 I guess I would agree. Stoicism does not look on ignorance well. I said weak because if my ignorance is dispelled and I am shown an alternative which costs a bit more in effort and commitment but the payoff is worth it, then it is a sign of weakness to not choose it. Bang for buck. It is subjective, of course. "If someone can prove me wrong and show me my mistake in any thought or action, I shall gladly change. Thank you for this. For months I have been fighting, but today I lost my final line of defense and lost control for some time but at least I transfer some of my anger towards a chair that I break time and time again until I got a little bit of control of myself. Now I'm rebuilding myself, my patience, self-love, my tolerance and resilience to keep working on my self. Again thank you 😔
The greatest truth I have learned is this: We create our own emotions. If you must have a guiding light let it be the poem Invictus by William Ernest Henley.
Thank you so much for this amazing video!!! I used to have sudden thoughts and used to think those are the absolute truth!! Like "the world is very cruel, everyone just uses evry other person, I'm not smart enough and never will be" but now I can accept these thoughts and be able to say to myself these are not the *whole* truth... There is some good in this world.. so I can be myself!!
I watched this two years ago and it changed my life so much. Thank you sir. I found stoicism and it has changed me and my family. I was stuck in a loop for 30+ years but I realized it was all my choice. I had tried religion but none it makes sense to me. Stoicism just asks me to be better than past me and that’s something we can all do everyday.
I love this so much! I resonate with stoic philosophy a lot. Non-attachment to worldly posessions, to our reputation, to outcomes. Such a practical way of viewing life. And liberating as well.
I wanna let you know I really appreciate you sharing useful wisdom with everyone. Your videos have helped me so much and I thank you for taking the time and effort to make them 🖖
A saying I like to say is "if you have nothing to lose, you might as well win it all". Even if you have lost everything, why not win it back? You may have nothing, but you can't lose anything at the same time, still breathing after all, best to make everyone count.
I’ve definitely learned the value of self-restraint through these type of stoic videos. I used to get so emotionally invested and angry over opinions and other’s words, but taking a step back to acknowledging how I feel and making the right decision has done wonders for me in the long run. I suppose though that staying silent over an important manner isn’t always the solution either. You don’t want people taking advantage of you after all, so speaking up for yourself is just as important, especially if you feel that you’ve been wronged in some way. However, it’s still your choice to let your emotions get the better of you, so if you have to respond, so it in a calm and civilized manner. The latter is admittedly something I still need to work on as my anger and insecurities slip through the cracks every so often. But, with enough practice, I can get a better handle on my outbursts.
Could not agree more. Just take a step back and take nothing personally. It's all business at the end of the day. If you let other people get to you, you simply lose. Best revenge is to just ignore and forget about them. No reaction and no response is often the best response.
Your channel awaked something in me, before I had a urge to control the future, with of course anxity as a result. After this channel and studiyng stoicisism and other similar philosphies for soon 3 years now I'm more content, almost feeling no fear anymore, dosen't dwell over the future anymore and is even been a minimalist. Your videos have helped me go through many difficult times and sufferings in my life. Cannot thank you enough for this channel and all the great videos guiding me through life.
It’s self evident that reliance on a significant other in order to feel unconquerable is unhealthy behavior. In contrast to that statement: having known your mind cannot be defeated is a valuable experience regardless of how the realization came
I never knew there was a philosophy based around stoicism... or more accurately where stoicism came from. But I have so much in common with the beliefs. I remember when I first started to lean into it through my own self realizations, when I made a vow to not kill myself... knowing that no matter what I endure or feel, I will always have the final choice to pull that trigger, and it will never be my own finger that does it.
I would say it is our awareness of our ability to choose, that is the most precious collection we have. There are many examples where we don't have a choice other then to intervene (just imagine your child drowning). But in this crucial moment, if you recognize the only option there is, and what is that you have to do (and that is to save your child), instead of running automatically towards it (and thereby missing the full picture - with possible solutions hidden in it), grasping that awareness completely, brings you the maximum chance of success. I am completely aware of my only choice. I am completely aware not all choices I have are alike, and that for me this one particular choice will bring me most pleasure, success, fortune, etc.

Just holding on a bit longer can reveal inner wisdom. So this video's wisdom is great to me. But I want to say our consciousness is not conquerable - even no matter what we decide. You can't lose being aware and innocent despite the top layers of life.
Change ourselves. Amen brothers and sisters. I ran down the street in London, UK naked yesterday screaming 'i'm free, i'm liberated' lol God rewarded me with a huge heart opening, still mind and sheer confidence
This is fine up to a point. We know more psychology than the ancient Romans and there is the development of modern techniques of mind control and ‘brain washing’ - however I agree with your general point.
brain washing is an attack on the mind- we can remove it from our diet to a large extent by changing what we give our attention to. Mind control television is most effective on the weak minded- the herd.
This is especially prevalent in all sorts of media through all sorts of mediums. Ads, click bait, knee-jerk headlines, politics and so much more attempt to prey on our emotions to gain something or push an agenda.
I try not to think.of it as someone making me endure hardship as much as dealing with the cards I've been dealt in order to be the person I most want to be at the end of the road. Life sucks and in my view that means it's my responsibility to try and make it a little less sucky for everyone involves
Stoicism is about mental strength. If you are talking about physical damage that’s different and you are correct. But even with physical damage our mental state determines how we choose to deal with it.
True but by learning to deal with what you can control and can't is the first step to dealing with the trauma. Why accept the negative if it's doing nothing but weigh you down. Same goes for the positive, why accept the good when you don't understand fully where the good stems from? Everything has an equal and opposite reaction in life that stems from something and typically when you get to the root issue of the problem it's the same thing most everyone has to deal with, pain. And by understanding that (at least to me) it's easier to deal with the trauma at hand. After all everyone is afraid of what they don't understand but when you know something inside and out even a phobia that's been with you since child hood is more manageable
This kind of philosophy needs to be taught to kids dealing with school bullies, or even adults dealing with grown up bullies in the form of coworkers or neighbors. Getting angry and emotional towards bullies just makes them bully even more, because they find it really funny (how much of comedy is people getting furious?), and they also get a sense of power and control in being able to control our mind, emotions, actions and reactions like a puppet. So, getting angry and emotional towards bullies just makes things worse and worse. One must remain very calm and very cool, one must remain stoic. Only fight if things have truly crossed the line and it's Deadly serious, and if it is, then be ready to die. Otherwise the wise stay patient and humble. Respect your enemies.
If you think stoicism alone can deflect bullies you don’t understand what a bully is. Stoicism doesn’t stop bullets, knives, or fists🤣people who are miserable enough never stop. Communication is a far more powerful tool. Understand someone’s darkness and pull them from it. Stoicism is “turning the other cheek”. Every bully knows you can always slap the other.
@@justintime6242 In my own experience you can expose a bully as a bitch when you show them you are not afraid- call them out- don't engage in their babble- stand firm in what you know to be true. Bitch slap them across their lying lips. They will hide away from you. I agree with the first fellow- only do this if its deadly serious. In my case, it was.
You don't have to respect your enemies. It's okay to get angry and emotional. This reads like the motivation behind being calm is to avoid being seen a certain way by others. You shouldn't care what others think. If people find it funny that you are mad, that just means they are terrible people and is in no way a reflection on you. They can think they are controlling you, but getting mad or emotional doesn't mean they are "controlling you like a puppet". It's called being a human being.
We are free to choose. At the end of the day we can always see how free we are. Thank you for the beautiful video and explanation. I love the film "the Lord of the ring "...God bless you
I am reminded of "timshel" from John Steinbeck's East of Eden. “Lee’s hand shook as he filled the delicate cups. He drank his down in one gulp. “Don’t you see?” he cried. “The American Standard translation orders men to triumph over sin, and you can call sin ignorance. The King James translation makes a promise in ‘Thou shalt,’ meaning that men will surely triumph over sin. But the Hebrew word, the word timshel-‘Thou mayest’-that gives a choice. It might be the most important word in the world. That says the way is open. That throws it right back on a man. For if ‘Thou mayest’-it is also true that ‘Thou mayest not.’ Don’t you see?” “Yes, I see. I do see. But you do not believe this is divine law. Why do you feel its importance?” “Ah!” said Lee. “I’ve wanted to tell you this for a long time. I even anticipated your questions and I am well prepared. Any writing which has influenced the thinking and the lives of innumerable people is important. Now, there are many millions in their sects and churches who feel the order, ‘Do thou,’ and throw their weight into obedience. And there are millions more who feel predestination in ‘Thou shalt.’ Nothing they may do can interfere with what will be. But “Thou mayest’! Why, that makes a man great, that gives him stature with the gods, for in his weakness and his filth and his murder of his brother he has still the great choice. He can choose his course and fight it through and win.” Lee’s voice was a chant of triumph. Adam said, “Do you believe that, Lee?” “Yes, I do. Yes, I do. It is easy out of laziness, out of weakness, to throw oneself into the lap of deity, saying, ‘I couldn’t help it; the way was set.’ But think of the glory of the choice! That makes a man a man. A cat has no choice, a bee must make honey. There’s no godliness there. And do you know, those old gentlemen who were sliding gently down to death are too interested to die now?” Adam said, “Do you mean these Chinese men believe the Old Testament?” Lee said, “These old men believe a true story, and they know a true story when they hear it. They are critics of truth. They know that these sixteen verses are a history of humankind in any age or culture or race. They do not believe a man writes fifteen and three-quarter verses of truth and tells a lie with one verb. Confucius tells men how they should live to have good and successful lives. But this-this is a ladder to climb to the stars.” Lee’s eyes shone. “You can never lose that. It cuts the feet from under weakness and cowardliness and laziness.” Adam said, “I don’t see how you could cook and raise the boys and take care of me and still do all this.” “Neither do I,” said Lee. “But I take my two pipes in the afternoon, no more and no less, like the elders. And I feel that I am a man. And I feel that a man is a very important thing-maybe more important than a star. This is not theology. I have no bent toward gods. But I have a new love for that glittering instrument, the human soul. It is a lovely and unique thing in the universe. It is always attacked and never destroyed-because ‘Thou mayest.”
Absolutely beautiful. I love the almost secular approach Steinbeck uses here, using scripture to prove a point not about theology, but about philosophy. Steinbeck is one of the few Christian authors I look to for spiritual guidance, despite being an atheist. Steinbeck doesn't see scripture as synonymous with gospel. Rather, he uses passages from the Bible as a lens through which to view his own personal philosophical beliefs. That, I think, gets to the heart of religion and spirituality itself, and this passage emphasizes that fact. Spirituality is more of an individual journey than most people realize, and at its core, the purpose of an individual journey is to make personal choices and guide your own destiny. Few authors understood that truth quite like John Steinbeck.
Thank you for sharing that sequence of words. Now I will share a few: "I am the monster under my bed, but there is more to a name than a monster under a bed." (Jeremiah Meade). You shared about the will of man, and I shared about what the will does to man. It makes him an inglorious monster at times and a noble king at others. He can conquer the monster though, and he can use the monster when he needs to. The monster which once invoked strong fear in you, once conquered by understanding, can allow you to see reality clearly and then act and react perfectly: to do what needs to be done when it needs to be done. In those times when your actions are immaculate, you are you, a king or queen of reality.
I wonder what Epictetus would respond if the tyrant threatened his wife or kids, this is again external but strikes more emotionally at the human desire to protect those you care for

In his book, Victor Frankl wrote that the worst people in those camps survived the longest. It's nice to think you'd be moral in a situation like that, but most people will break.
Eh kind of. But he also himself survived and credited that to having found some purpose and meaning (as is the name of his book), and admits that he broke more than once but found his way back. True though that none of us know what we're capable of until tested.
Interesting. I’ve always had a theory that mean or evil people tend to live longer lives (this obviously only anecdotal lol) because being a d!ck gives them some weird kind of meaning in their life. I donno, I’ve just seen so many jerks in my family and circle that live long lives while the kindest never seem to live that long.
Did they break? The body is a mere manifestation of spirit...I would have been ok..to move to another dimension..gladly...the prison guards that weren't nice ived longer...in a nation camp...pretty sure that's the lower end of deal🥰knowing who you are means not afraid of dieing🙂
Useful advise! My father used to have a simple hillbilly stoic saying, "Son, no one will ever get your goat unless you show them where you put it."
What a fantastic saying!
When there wasn't any wretched factory farms, and genetically modified filth in regards to ghastly fast food 🤢🤮
Anyway, interesting saying that 👍
Folksy and fun. Thank you.
Your father sounds like a wise man 😅

"When we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves". Wow

I see some people thinking that being stoic is not feeling or neglecting feelings, its not. Its about acknowledging your thoughts and feelings and not acting upon them. Often we see our thoughts as absolute truth, they are not.
Thanks for taking the time to make these videos. I wish yall the best
Yes, exactly. Our "proto-emotions" are not in our control and it's fine when they arise. What counts is what we do with them.
I would like to add that often we see our feelings, not only our thoughts, as absolute truth as well. It is the ability to learn the distinction between the true thoughts and feelings with the illusionary ones that helps us make better choices.
Exactly.
I think naturally it is alot easier to bring this concept in to legitimize your feelings during hard times - while most of the time being stoic isn't so black and white and takes acceptance, patience and being humble. usually it's also far from easy despite having the appearance of being so!
Yeah I'm trying this, trying to let thoughts and emotions flow through me,my anxiety has gone through the roof.

Definitely recommend it.
Yes. "Man's search for meaning" is a life changing book.
I was hoping someone would put up Victor Frankl's quote....about the freedom of your personal response to adversity.
He has many. Here are some.
"The one thing you can't take away from me is the way I choose to respond to what you do to me. The last of one's freedoms is to choose one's attitude in any given situation."
"When we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves."
"Forces beyond your control can take away everything you possess except one thing, your freedom to choose how you will respond to the situation."
"Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom."

There's no need to hope. I promise you, the end of the tunnel is a nice and bright exit to greener pastures. Keep up the stoic practice. You will be ok 🙂
There is a light. It will get better. Good luck and stay strong.
I will put it to you this way: you would not dare put yourself in hell unless you had already seen the light. The light is ubiquitous because light makes up every place. If you have seen anything, then you have seen the light, but to understand the light is something else. You are supposed to be the light.

Alot of people misunderstand stoicism as simply enduring the worst of things and letting things happen. That's not being stoic. That's being a doormat.
Being stoic is about being able to endure terrible things while having the capacity to do something about it.

I'm happy for your child, he or she is lucky to have a parent like you.

Careful kids... being angry is not bad.
Thank you
Processing emotions take practice. Giving them attention, sitting with the feelings, is radically different from acting upon them.
Cant let the ego take the wheel
This is why I'm glad I had a healthy relationship with my psychology before I found Stoicism and such
That’s an important point, one should learn how to deal effectively with the negative feelings and not ignore them or let them build up inside you
I needed this. I have been giving in to my anger and desires a lot more lately with all that is going on in the world. I had forgotten that everything was happening prior but one thing has changed, my will to continue to resist and overcome. I was losing that lately.

@GreenTeaLatte exactly that’s how I interpreted it too 👍🏽
When it comes to doubt, rejection, or disrespect I've learned that it's not wrong to be upset but it's a waste of time to target the people who have hurt you.
Life is full of pain but when it's my pain idc about it, but when it's another's I tend to flip.... still don't know how to combat that
Exactly, it’s the way of the light
Smart people learn from everything and everyone, average people from their experiences, stupid people already have all the answers

Who cares about experiences, i just learn everything from the news.
Stupid people refuse to do their own research for things and would rather someone tell them and even after they still won't understand or even may continue doing something the same way. (Ignorance is a choice)
Always do your own research
And figure out why things are done the way their done or why a person might explain something to you a certain way.
The average person like the smart person takes all information founded into consideration However, the average person will only take the information given to him and put it to use
While the smart person may take the next step up with it.
Stupid people you can't group them.
We are all stupid in our own ways
We all have our own shortcomings, flaws weaknesses

I believe Jacob geller mention this game in his essay(?)

Everybody stoic until the blackmailers get ur browser history.
I've been exploring stoicism for years, but this short video explained few things that I didn't get well from the literature. Thank you.
To not let external forces conqure thee but to improvise, adapt and rise. Thats the art of life i want to thread.
I agree with a lot of what the stoic philosophers had to say; but I also know, first-hand, it's a lot harder to live than it is to preach it.
Now Gandhi's quote make more sense "Strength dose not come from physical capacity, it comes from indomitable will".
I just have to say, I love ALL of what you share here in youtube, and I just noticed how many subscribers you've grown to! I subscribed your channel at around 100k, and seeing you grow to over 1 million is just surreal. I hope your 2022 is amazing, and everyone else who reads this, let's make 2022 great for ourselves and everyone around us! Looking forward to next content :)
These are the years of the stoic revolution its natural his veiwership would grow.
Your videos always give me some sort of inner peace and comfort
I love how this channel has progressed!! I love the content!
“When we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves”
This is why defense is the best offense because the attacker will always tire and the one who endures will win in the end.
More like in old times, they'd just chop off your head and be done with it.
I hope so 💛
You're speaking my language bro. The higher level of application blossoms when combined with knowledge of the coming Kingdom of Jehovah God, who is truly unconquered by no other, and conquers with truth and love.
Just holding on a bit longer can reveal inner wisdom. So this video's wisdom is great to me.
But I want to say our consciousness is not conquerable - even no matter what we decide. You can't lose being aware and innocent despite the top layers of life.
"When we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves."
Love the channel by the way!! Keep it up!
Change ourselves. Amen brothers and sisters. I ran down the street in London, UK naked yesterday screaming 'i'm free, i'm liberated' lol God rewarded me with a huge heart opening, still mind and sheer confidence
This spoke to my heart. It’s just what I needed and right on time. Thanks
Like you got one
Yep, I’ve heard something similar. Something like „no matter what, you will always be in control of how you respond to the situation“.
This is fine up to a point. We know more psychology than the ancient Romans and there is the development of modern techniques of mind control and ‘brain washing’ - however I agree with your general point.
Agreed. All our emotions are valid.
Do you care to elaborate a little bit?
brain washing is an attack on the mind- we can remove it from our diet to a large extent by changing what we give our attention to. Mind control television is most effective on the weak minded- the herd.
This is especially prevalent in all sorts of media through all sorts of mediums. Ads, click bait, knee-jerk headlines, politics and so much more attempt to prey on our emotions to gain something or push an agenda.
Like gaslighting. Especially if you stay with someone who likes to do that 24/7. It literally drives you a bit crazy. Idk what to do anymore.
it's remarkable the similarities between stoic and buddhist philosophy.
I can endure a lot, I get it. But the fact that someone makes you have to endure hardships is defeat in itself
Not if you come out on top in the end
I try not to think.of it as someone making me endure hardship as much as dealing with the cards I've been dealt in order to be the person I most want to be at the end of the road. Life sucks and in my view that means it's my responsibility to try and make it a little less sucky for everyone involves
“When we are no longer able to change a situation, we are forced to change ourselves.”
Yes that's theory. In practice there is damage and trauma that's difficult to heal.
Actually Stoicism is also a coping mechanism.
with persistence and rules, it happens
Stoicism is about mental strength. If you are talking about physical damage that’s different and you are correct. But even with physical damage our mental state determines how we choose to deal with it.
It's your own mind you have to control.
When we feel we can no longer control a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves. Couldn’t me more true
The best channel on RUclips ever, thank you for sharing.
Thanks for another video! :)
Stoicisms main benefit is developing the self awareness to comprehend reality as accurately as possible.
Hello brother. Your videos made me a stoic. And I am deeply grateful for that. Keep going 👍
I’m sure you’re much, much more. 😁👋
Thank you for posting! ❤️
Stoicism: "Your arm's off!" "No it's not!"
Tis but a scratch!
"Ah he's got an arm off" - buddah
It was never mine in the first place
For if ‘Thou mayest’-it is also true that ‘Thou mayest not.’ Don’t you see?”
“Yes, I see. I do see. But you do not believe this is divine law. Why do you feel its importance?”
“Ah!” said Lee.
Adam said, “Do you believe that, Lee?”
“Yes, I do. Yes, I do. It is easy out of laziness, out of weakness, to throw oneself into the lap of deity, saying, ‘I couldn’t help it; the way was set.’ But think of the glory of the choice! That makes a man a man. A cat has no choice, a bee must make honey. There’s no godliness there. And do you know, those old gentlemen who were sliding gently down to death are too interested to die now?”
Adam said, “Do you mean these Chinese men believe the Old Testament?”
Lee said, “These old men believe a true story, and they know a true story when they hear it. It cuts the feet from under weakness and cowardliness and laziness.”
Adam said, “I don’t see how you could cook and raise the boys and take care of me and still do all this.”
“Neither do I,” said Lee.
The only thing conquerable is our ability to choose. That line made me realize that I am not free.
I wonder what Epictetus would respond if the tyrant threatened his wife or kids, this is again external but strikes more emotionally at the human desire to protect those you care for
He mentioned actually about kissing your wife and kids at night with the thought that everything, even them, can be gone tomorrow.
that is exactly what I'm thinking
How might you respond with what you know and believe today?
I think he would protect them by hide them or told them to run far far away, or he would die for them courage is also a Virtue of stoic
"Don't suffer imagined troubles".
If your videos were a potion, the main ingredient would be entertainment and enlightenment. Every time I watch your videos, I feel as if I've learned something new and I try to put these lessons into use. Thank you for improving my life and happiness.
Survival is just that "survival"......living true to your values till death is much more respectable than mere surviving
