  • Gary Scott's 1986 Hardies Hero's top 10 shootout lap, his first and only top 10 shootout appearance and what an appearance it was. Gary's sensational on edge lap put him on pole position for the 1986 Great Race.

"I knew it was all coming to an end and I was angry. I thought I’d throw it on pole or I’d bin it. I’ll probably never get another chance. And it was a really, really good lap. I didn’t even take my foot out of it when I was in the dirt. I overdrove the car, but I overdrove in a way that it was floating everywhere."
Bear in mind the Skyline there had horribly vague recirculating-ball steering. Gary, that was exceptional.

    10/10ths the whole way round.
One of the best laps of Bathurst ever. Almost 2 seconds faster than the TWR XJS from the year before. Cracking lap.

great time considering he almost did a Moffat at McPhillamy. There was only one lap that week faster, a 2.16.16 set by Allan Grice on Friday. Grice set this time on very soft Dunlop Kevlar tyres, but Grice's sponsor contract with Yokohama prevented him using any other brand of tyres in the top ten shoot out. Incredibly even though Gary Scott put Nissan on pole and came third (Nissan's first Bathurst podium finish) in the race he was out of a job with Nissan in 1987, unceremoniously dumped over the phone without as much as a thank you

Amazingly he wasn’t picked up by a good team for future drives - I reckon in a quick Sierra in 88-90 he would have had more poles & race wins .
