"The fire that is starting to go out" This track was released just about the time that my 93 year old Dad was on his end of life path. I played it incessantly then and it still makes me melancholy 11 years later. He was a tough but very caring old bloke. He saw his youth fritter away in the jungles of Burma in World War 2. He only ever told me the funny things that happened, never the horrors. Well, eventually his fire did go out but never a day passes when this now 70 year old doesn't think of him. This and so, so many Snow Patrol songs affect my life daily. Love this band.
Isn't it amazing how a single line from a song can be pulled out and mean so much to you in a very different context than it had in the song? There is a Blue October song and when my mother had passed and I was sitting in the hospice room with her until they took her away, a line from one of their songs just kept repeating in my head, "I can't explain the way I feel inside." The line and the, for lack of a better way of putting it, the feel or energy of the line completely fit my situation. My heart goes out to you for your dad. Mine was in WW2 also, he was in England with the soldiers from Czechoslovakia fighting with the English.

I have huge admiration for anyone who's able to let his vulnerability come this close to the surface.
