Tesla vs Big winter storm. Am I going to run out of power?

- Winter is here! And in the UK that means a succession of Big Storms blowing in off the Atlantic. I have a trip to do and the wind is howling - literally.
In weather that is tearing the roof off buildings, how will my Tesla Model Y perform? What impact will howling gales have on range and efficiency? Is this trip going to be as easy as normal, or will I g=face running out of juice?

I agree that if Tesla want to open up all the charge stations they need to reconfigure - so that wrong side charging cars don't cause an issue for the more important Tesla drivers ( I won't call them Tesla owners as so many seem to just rent ). A lot of people bought a Tesla for the charging network, Elon should remember that..
When I first got a leaf the salesman said that I needed to adjust my thinking and realise that at 100% it was like a quarter of a tank of petrol. As you say the cold, wet and especially the wind destroy efficiency in all cars.
When I first got my Leaf the salesman was still hoping to change my mind and sell me a Qashqai instead. He literally didn’t have a clue about EVs…
@justgetatesla haha yes, sadly still true. Luckily my Škoda dealer in Dunfermline is very clued up and a bit of an evangelist. Sadly though they no longer get to sell EVs, Škoda took it all off them and sell direct like tesla. So dealers now have zero incentive to sell EVs, in fact they make money by selling you a fossil car boot don't if you buy an ev, they get an admin fee for handing the car over to you. Tesla is shaking the whole industry up and soon there will be no dealers just a Web site 🙄
It's Tesla's fault. If Tesla are opening up supercharger sites, then they need to install longer cables to their chargers before opening them up
Or charge double
@@justgetatesla Hey, those of us with left-side charging ports don't want to be charged double!
As a Škoda driver (but recovering tesla owner) I avoid v 3 chargers because even though my car tells me there are chargers available I can't tell if there are going to be any that I can use due to my charge port being on the right side (which I now think if as the right side not the wrong side 😂). I also don't think it's sensible to risk blocking 2 bays for cars which charge on the left.
No! It’s a Tesla issue, not the other non Tesla car. Kinda felt the same when using a CPScotland charger when they were free and there was a Teslas using them rather than the nearby Tesla chargers. Paybacks a bitch!
Yeah Perth used to be terrible because all of the teslas refused to use the superchargers
Tesla teaches us meteorology lol! That with the new on screen rain forecast, winds aloft messages etc it’s almost like a mod from the PPL!
For those saying the charge cables are too short, it’s worth noting that V4 superchargers exist, and are being rolled out more. While I do understand where people are coming from with V3 superchargers, the fact that they will eventually be upgraded to V4 is great for everyone. (Note: V4 superchargers are NOT the same as “urban” superchargers, which are V3 internals with a different exterior.)
Hi Ian, yet another great video. How are the new ( ish ) wheel covers proving in efficiency? I seem to remember you quoted their quote, as being more efficient than the standard issue?
It’s hard to do a scientific test of these covers vs the standard ones. I haven’t notice any significant difference
@@justgetatesla Thanks Ian, and they look better than the originals which is a bonus.
I was also at the Addington super charging stalls a few weeks ago, two of the stalls were blocked because of a BMW and a Kia charging at the wrong side very annoying I had to wait 20 minutes to get a charge. I feel your pain😢
Badly designed chargers IMO, if they are opening up to anyone. The last Tesla charger I used had a 15-minute wait, two ICE blocking, and one BEV not plugged in, which didn't help.
Wish I was driving my Tesla when the storm hit - instead a fence post fell on it whilst it was parked and put a whacking great dent in it D:
Thanks good vido
I always drive past Addrstone chargers. Slowly its getting busier and i think it badly needs expanded but the land around is small. Its a main main road north and south. Bit of boo boo from Tesla.
please insert the view of the teslogic App like in the video "My AWD Tesla Model is RWD most of the time"
Where it took in the bottom left corner completely!
The information of teslogic is so much more interesting than the dashboard in front of the passenger!!
🥺
More Teslogic videos coming!
As a european owner of a tesla ihave the same problem because its also on the wrong site
Wrong-side charging banned? Sure! (Speaking as an MG4 owner, whose car slots neatly in between the Teslas, while feeling a bit like a cat in a dog suit.) But how could you possibly police it? I've even seen an MG5 with a central charging port which could reach either side plug in the wrong side simply because the driver didn't understand how it worked. You'd need someone there to physically stop them.
Petrol driver here, trying to figure out the EV thing. Was that 4 charge stops for 593 total miles? Cost per mile or KM would be handy.
Conclusion so far is there's too much stopping to charge with an EV especially if trying to keep between 20 and 80%. A lack of charging sites here in NZ would make longer trips a pain and potentially expensive.
Obviously local trips and home charging is a massive plus for EV's, although we pay a distance-based tax on BEV's now too.
Enjoy your channel.
You don't have to keep between 20 and 80% though. It's only recommended not to leave the car for days or weeks on end below 20% or above 80%. That obviously doesn't apply on a long trip. You can go right down to 5% if you're sure of making it to the charger, and I've heard of people who think nothing of going down to 1%. The thing about going above 80% is more about time, because charging speed slows above that point. But if you're doing a meal stop there's no reason not to go up to 90% or even 95%.
I've got a shorter-range car, just 51 kwh battery, so I regularly run it between 5% and 95% on long trips. I find that the stops coincide with when I'd want to stop for food anyway, so I stop for lunch, an afternoon coffee, and dinner, and that's a whole day's driving even in a comparatively short-range car.
Here in Cornwall, we got the official Government 'danger to life' warning on our phones for the first time for Darragh! Like a good citizen, I stayed indoors only to loose electricity supply all day Sunday. Fortunately I'd just had a Powerwall 3 fitted, and unlike most solar/battery systems that does provide off-grid backup. It's a big pity Tesla does not allow vehicle to home though, Powerwall only stores enough for around a day while the car could manage an outage of a week or so with ease!
Powerwall for the win!
As I drove from Whitby to Edinburgh and back in the same storm, and charged where you did I guess the answer to your thumbnail is NO! 😊 also totally agree with your non tesla comments but the northern most bay at Anersty you can park sideways on behind the lamppost and charge from the RH rear corner opposite to the standard corner on the Tesla’s . No issues in my 103k model 3
I saw an ID3 doing that at Trentham Gardens. It was pretty neat the way he had sort of shimmied the car into a space that wasn't really there. I saw him as I was plugging into one of the V4s in the row behind. Having an MG4 I can use the V3s without annoying the Tesla crowd, so my initial instinct was to go for a V3 and leave the V4s for people who needed them, but all the V3s were taken, including by the resourceful ID3 driver, so nothing for it but to go for a V4.
I've almost experienced this at Adderstone service for my trip to Isle of Skye. Supercharger were full and when I left a Ford pulled in not knowing his car wouldn't work with the single available stall. I bought the vehicle for the charging network, I don't feel opening up very limited v3 supercharger like Adderstone is helpful. Not helpful to existing owners and not helpful to other EV drivers getting angry gazes.
Luckily down south there's a lot more charging options so I've never personally experienced waiting due to blocked stalls. In fact I've never even experience queuing for all my supercharging over last 2+ years driving the Tesla.
I’ve queued twice since Sept22. For less than 10 minutes each time
How are your tyres holding up wear wise after nearly 15k miles of usage do you think you will crack 25k or even more .great video by the way keep pounding the tarmac
Tyres are great!
My Q8 etron DC charges drivers side front (UK) so not an issue when I go in forwards . Having said that, when I have charged at Tesla in a non Tesla vehicle, there have always been spaces available. I rarely find the need to use Tesla chargers anyway and only tend to use them on road trips in Europe. It would be good idea to have commonality of charging points and I passenger side rear (UK) would be my preferred option.
Right side is the wrong side
@@justgetatesla Not if it's right-side front though, which I think was his point.
@@justgetatesla Not if it is at the front!
I have Xd or Tweeted Elon about the V3 open for all.
You never know. He might take note.
You passed my house ....belated wave 😊
If Tesla want the revenue by opening their chargers to all, then perhaps they should have thought it through before opening them up. As someone previously said, make sure the cables are suitable. Tesla management seem a bit short of common sense. I tried not to mention the stupid M3 indicators, but I couldn’t help it.
I have a solution to wrong-side vehicles: pay double
Thats the best answer👍. The Tesla chargers only for TESLA‼️
@@justgetatesla How do you enforce it though? There are places where a wrong-side car can get on without excluding anyone, too. I've seen it done at both Trentham Park and Fort William.
I think this shows the limitations of relying solely on the Tesla network. If you'd used the destination charger in Newcastle (even if also topping up at Adderstone just in case they didn't work), or even one of the non-Tesla rapids in Newcastle (eg Ionity Gateshead) you could have left Newcastle with a full battery and had more options and not had to wait or worry. There is also Ionity at Alnwick (which the Kia would have been better off using as 800V). The section of the A1 south of Newcastle to Ferrybridge is even worse because it's older style 130kW shared bay sites at Scotch Corner or Washington, so if someone turns up next to you you're down to 60kW... Don't get me wrong the Tesla network is the best, but Tesla + all other CPOs when appropriate is better!!
When I arrived at the hotel all the charging points were occupied - and when I checked again just before we went out they were still occupied…
@@justgetatesla Yeah that can be an issue with destination chargers, and if someone's there for the night their car won't move. There are quite a few other destination chargers in the city centre though, plus an MFG rapid about half a mile away. For me personally given the weather I would have ideally just charged once when I arrived in Newcastle and not once on the way there and once on the way back.
Just keep the superchargers for Tesla only. End of problem.
That's not helpful for the tesla Misson though is it? 😢
Yes. Ban others unless they can use the charger without blocking another.
Your efficiency was legitimately worse than what I get when towing with my model y
Yep. It was that bad. You saw the wind ripping the roof apart!
I like the Dundee Supercharger, 10% off food and drink if you tell them you're charging.
I didn't know that! I did tell them, so maybe I got the discount?
@@moragkerr9577 Be sure to tell them, and get the percentage ! Of course the food isn't cheap to start with.
Unfortunately takeaway seems to be priced pretty much the same as eat in, and they have a habit of running out of takeaway cups too, but the food is OK and the toilets usually spotless.
no if they r open to all then its ok to charge most ev have right hand charging ports so its tesla being greedy to make more money to open to all its there fault for opening them to all ev to be greedy
Yes. Tesla charging less than anyone else for power is them being "greedy"
I say yes to non Teslas being blocked from V3 Chargers. A great video and horrible weather!
In 4 years of EV driving, I've never had the need to use a Tesla station in the UK. so I wouldn't be bothered that much. Maybe Musk needs the money lol.
