My Horse Bolts Off When Ridden!! Can You Help Me??

  • Horse wont ride out and bolts off, Owned and loved for years this mare wont hack out and if pushed will bolt off! Lots of meaningful groundwork has stopped the bucking but the dream would be to ride out on her own or lead out in front. Helping this horse and owner became potentially dangerous times for both Steve and her owner

      This is an interesting puzzle. The owner understandingly finds it hard to be the leader to this nervous but very strong,assertive, stubborn horse. One hopefully safe way for her to get this horse to calm down might be to ride her all over the place behind another calm horse. Until everything is very familiar. Then to ride her with another horse until she is very quiet. Then to ride her for short periods by herself over the same places until she is quiet. I wonder why the owner wants a bitless bridle? Maybe the horse needs work on her teeth. So called wolf teeth can be a problem. It would be very hard to trust this horse. The horse needs to learn to enjoy being ridden. Lots of exercise will help. But Steve will not always be there to save the day.

    I rescued a little 4 yr old paint that would bolt when mounted, bolt when dismounting, bolt when ridden etc. I was told he was broken in by someone who wore big spurs so I’m sure he was poked each time they got on and off. Their way of “fixing” the issue was to run him as hard as they could til he was exhausted. 😡
    I spent weeks at a time just putting my foot in the stirrup then out, then standing then out then almost sitting then out then sitting then dismounting…months and months til he was so bored I could sense him saying “just get on with it will you?”😂
    Then I did clock face..where I would take him in 15 minute increments around the face of the “clock”. Then 30 minutes and so on. They said he couldn’t be caught…I just followed him around til he looked at me , then before too long that wasn’t an issue either. When I did halter him we just walked around with no work..just grazing, looking at things..boring stuff. Now 19 years later he is a “go to” horse, a mountain horse , a trail horse , and like his buddies..anyone can get on him and have a fun solid safe ride. So much depends on how these dear souls are started..sad that so many are not treated with patience and respect.

Having been knocked down twice and actually trampled and injured one of those times (by a horse that was neglected his whole life) I've taken a deep dive into the videos, and l am so pleased with the progress we've made. Thank you, Steve Young. You have taught me so much. Blessings~~

    My best "blood everywhere" was when the horse I was on took a big mouthful of tree. The other horses then ran off and mine went too but still had the big mouthful of tree. Came back like a catapult and got me in the ear. Proper bugs bunny. Literally lying on that horse as it cantered off. I think I can thank the horse I learned to ride on for a lot. Every ride was a lesson in not letting her turn left & take off down the road to the orchard. Did wonders for my "crisis management."

    Great Great video again!!!! My mule was famous for those very "turn n burn" maneuvers. Only mules done keep running , they spin again to snort at the danger. Haa . I've learned to stay centered and go with it but lots of groundwork ,getting his feet in my hands so to speak and many other "exersizes " has helped him realize he should think about it a bit more first. Also some cow working clinics to face fears. Haa. They really can come around with our help if we stick with it. Hes now my go to guy for getting out on the trail.(not for working cows) 😂
    But I swear they get so proud of themselves when they overcome their fears.

      @evieblessed 5 месяцев назад +3

      @ckh2815 , he probably sounded surprised as he prefers to use a bit. He definitely has no issues telling people if he thinks a method is wrong - for example feeding treats by hand. Not really sure what your argument is. The issue is lack of confidence in both rider and pony, not the bitless bridle. 50 years of experience mate.

    • @louisegogel7973
      @louisegogel7973 5 месяцев назад +4

      @BerylForrest 5 месяцев назад +2

      @ckh2815 well it clearly does work, as they were doing brilliantly by the end of the video. The Bitless bridle wasn't the problem, it was the missing parts of the training and confidence that were missing. "A stronger bit" is rarely the answer lack of confidence.

    I'm not a rider but I've learned so much about horses just by watching your videos. Just as you stated, though Pam & Rosemary are informed riders, you have more experience. P&R's work shows even before you started. But It's amazing how you give the rider & horse so much confidence to trust and move on.

    Life has a way of humbling us, yet you took it & showed us 😍
    The ticking of time is a study your journey learns.
    Adapt & move on.

    Well done guys, my girl Magic won't hack out alone, so we don't get to ride much and would love to try this out. Would love an update in a month or 2 to see how you guys are getting on 😍 Steve do you come to the east anglia region to do demos ?

    Another great video, nothing scarier than a horse that bolts, it is something I am currently working on and it's hard going
