From $500 to $50 - Why An Ageing Optiplex 390 Might Still Be Worth Buying

  • Online auction sites are like retirement homes for Dell Optiplex PCs, with many ending up there after years of service. Once costing a small fortune, especially to bulk buyers in office environments, the 390 is old enough that it can be found quite cheap, yet new enough that it still supports somewhat relevant and capable processors.
Today I'll be talking about my recent Dell purchase, what can be done in terms of upgrades, and discussing whether or not one of these old workhorses are worth it for budget PC gamers.
    Thanks for watching :)

My brother rocks with this computer pairing with an i5-2400 and a GTX 1050 Ti since I gifted him this computer for Christmas because his old computer ran slow. He loves his big gift which was this since then. :)

TheCalmGamer Thank you. He's older than me and doesn't have a job and wanted to build a gaming computer one day so I started the budget Optiplex 390 project in November after he told me that his Optiplex 745 which was his computer at the time started to show its age and ran slow because of viruses and malware he had on his old computer. He mainly plays his games in 1080p resoultion.
I did indeed reused my old parts including the 1TB hard drive I had lying around and also stuck in my old Crucial Ballstix RAM that still works after the Corsair RAM I put in not long ago started to malfunction.

Hey mate, iv been watching you for a while now and i must say. I know you'll probably never see this but i really really enjoy your videos. There's a lot of rich youtubers out there showcasing the latest and greatest hardware basically flashing off their money but you, you my friend are a true budgeter you understand what it is like to not have alot of $ but still want to be a pc builder and bench marker. The few youtubers like yourself have inspired me to love building pc's since the age of 10, i often go dumpster diving at the local recycling for pc's like the ones you find and upgrade them/ fix them then sell them off , a hobby and I really enjoy it. I owe you my respect for still believing in older tech and understanding that yes not all of us are made of money :P

The best part of a relatively recent Optiplex tower is the use of the industry standard ATX form factor and motherboard connectors, beware other vendors such as HP that often don't.

I have a optiplex 990 and upgraded the cpu to a i7 2600k and slapped a 1660 Super in there. Obviously with a new psu. I can run high settings on most modern games with 60 and above fps. The only thing kinda limiting this machine is my i7, but I plan on getting a matx motherboard for the optiplex. I'm making a whole ass sleeper build with this thing.

My OptiPlex 980 is 10 years old. A solid state drive and update to Windows 10, and it still runs great. I fell in love with the silver patterned front. I started a new job recently, and a Dell 390 was sitting in the "bone yard" waiting to be scrapped with a bunch of HP's. After cleaning up the server room, I presented my task and asked if I could take this one and a slim case. I forget the model.
The OptiPlex 390 is still a work in progress. It had 3GB (Yes, three.) and the license was for Windows 7. I presume 32x due to the memory. Not allowed to keep these HDD's due to privacy concerns, but the home office had a couple of drives for the taking. A 300GB and 3TB (Woo Hoo!) I pop-in two 4GB sticks (from the bone yard) and install Windows 7 Pro 64x from my Dell recovery disk. Yes, you can upgrade from 32x to 64x of Windows for free. The version must match - Home 32x must be 64x Home, Pro 32x to 64x, etc. Then a firmware update for the BIOS. Poor thing was struggling with v05, but has the latest v14 now.
Download the MediaCreationTool for Windows 10 and do an in place update. Viola! Licensed Windows 10 Pro. The CPU is still a Pentium dual core. After discovering the other slim OptiPlex was DOA, I decided I didn't want to spend time or money replacing the power supply in this cramped unit. I salvage the i5-2500. Just waiting for thermal paste to come in the mail next week to do the final transition.
The DVD is ROM only. I was going to replace it with a RW from the boneyard, but thought why not have two? You never know when you need to copy a disk. Still have to install it. But, did you know you can make your CD/DVD readers into drive A or B with Drive Manager? I bet you never thought about it. If you are like me, A & B are for floppy drives. But who has floppy drives any more? CD/DVD RW's were meant to replace floppies but people like having the floppies for software and stuff. That's why our CD/DVD players were always D, E or even G!. With floppies now in the distant past, you can free up those drive letters for when you plug in USB sticks or external drives.

Yes, the I7-2600 works in the Optiplex 390. My 390 came with an i3-2120 and I upgraded to an i5-2500 (not 2400). There is actually a BIOS upgrade that came out 6/2018 that updated the CPU microdes, and from what i'm reading you can now upgrade up to an i7-3770. I updated from A11 to A14 with no issues. www.dell.com/community/Optiplex-Desktops/390-CPU-upgrades/td-p/5975479/page/2 (see 5th post down in the link). Can anyone confirm Ivy Bridge CPU's are now supported?

I pulled one of those out of our pile for the dump at work. Core i3 2120, 4GB of RAM, and 250 GB HDD. I currently use it as my NAS with Windows 10 Professional serving as the OS. Since that requires basically no GPU, I took the pre-installed turd of a GPU out (can't even tell what it is), added 4GB of DDR3 RAM, swapped the 250GB HDD for a 60GB SSD and put in two 4TB WD Reds in RAID 1 mode. The PC is more than powerful enough, it's very quiet, draws very little power and has enough performance to serve as a fileserver (backups), FTP server, Plex server and even spare computer if an emergency arises.

I bought a Dell Optiplex 390 for a 'retro' build (to run older games like Fallout 3/New Vegas) with Windows 7 and it came with the i3 but I changed it for a 2500 from CeX for £42 and it still runs to this day and can run almost anything, new or old, at max settings! As I have a main PC, I gave this to my brother for his retro collection (retro in the respect that he has thousands of games and tens of PC's and consoles) and he uses it as a secondary PC for modern titles and games that don't like Windows 10. :D

It is running 16GB RAM and runs extremely fast, the SFF power supply handles this CPU very well and even has a Low Profile NVidia NVS 310 GPU and for Storage a PNY CS900 120GB SSD.
These Dell Optiplexes are great little computers to work on and use as a basic daily machine. :D What started out as a cheap PC became a very reasonable spec pc running windows 10 Pro 64 Bit and 1080P Videos.

I have one of these and an HP 8200 elite. I took the i5 2400 out of the HP, put it in the 390 (worked fine) put 8gb of ram in it and swapped the psu out to put a gtx 660ti in it. I gave it to a friend. Its an awesome little budget machine. Hes since put an 480gb patriot SSD in it. I also gave him the windows pro key from the HP and it activated fine. I put the i3 into the sff 8200 elite and put Linux Mint on it (could have just used a kms or left it unactivated but a linux distro seemed like a good fit and installing it was a nightmare, thanks HP). The 390 didnt actually have a windows key that was retrievable (it rubbed off and for whatever reason I couldn't fetch the key from the motherboard) so Linux was a good option. The HP i also took the side panel off to lay it on its side and put a full size AMD 6670 in it, to do that I had to bend the crap out of the case to fit it, but it works. Its basically a doorstop anyway and it can be bent back if i get a low profile GPU.
I love these Dell/HP machines. The optiplex is by far my favorite in the MT variant because of the case size. The HP 8200 elite, since it uses a BTX motherboard, you cant swap it to a larger case so to utilize full size budget cards, you will have to do something ghetto like what I did, or be super crafty and make something that will hold it in place like cut out the side panel and add supports. The dell uses an atx board and cannot really be relocated to another case (mainly because of proprietary front io) but the size of the case is large enough for most people and as you said the PSU can be swapped whereas the HP you cant unless you set it outside the case.
    Long live the Optiplex MT!

I just recently bought a 390, core i5 2400, 8gb ram, 500gb hard drive, win 10 pro. I replaced the PSU with a 500w, and put a GTX 560 in it, and a Samsung 860 Evo SSD. I plan on replacing the video card at some point since Nvidia just announced they're retiring support for it. Still, for a budget gaming PC, I'm satisfied.

I would personally vouch for the 390's effectiveness, as this became the basis for my first build. I got mine about a year ago for roughly $120 with 8gb ram, a 750gb hdd, and an i5-2400. A simple ram, psu and gpu upgrade makes playing a lot of modern games real nice.
Only big issue I've ever had was installing my gpu, as it was difficult to get the mobo to accept the card. However, it eventually caught on and it works great.

I have a SFF Optiplex 990 board that I built a machine around. The 390 has more standard parts as far as having normal USB headers and sound headers. I think that the front panel header might be compatible with a commodity case as well. The 990 shouldn't be ruled out though. Even though you have to do a bit of cable splicing to make it work, it has four RAM slots. It's still limited to 16 GB, but it's cheaper to get 4 4GB DIMMs than 2 8GB DIMMs right now.
There is another advantage of these old Dells to consider - You're pretty much guaranteed to get BIOS updates to protect against Spectre (at least as long as Intel releases microcode updates for the relevant CPUs and chipsets).

I bought one of these that had the 2400 in it. Tossed 8 gigs of RAM in it, a new PSU, and a 780. I lent it to a buddy so we can play PUBG together. Ran absolutely fantastic. As I had most of the parts laying around, I had a pretty damn good gaming rig for not even 50 bucks!

I bought a Dell Optiplex 790 off eBay in the U.S. for about $130. It came with 8 GB of RAM, an i5-2400 processor, and 250 GB of HDD space. To build it up, I added a GTX 550 Ti and a hybrid 1 TB HDD (~$50 ea.). For about $240, I now have a beast that was simple to put together. Next up will probably be a GTX 6XX card, or higher.

I have the 390 desktop variant. I have it working with the i7 2600S, which is a low power variant of the 2600. I’ve also heard people on forums saying they’ve gotten it working with 3rd generation low power i7s through a bios update and because of the die shrink, and greater efficiency. I mainly use my optiplex 390 as a home theater PC because of how quiet, small, and fast it is.

Anyone looking for a NEW budget PC case, I just bought a Riotoro CR480 Mid Tower and for 30 quid I'm amazed how good it is. Having also recently bought a cheapo £22 case, that was utter shite by comparison. The build quality is far superior and it has some of the features you'd find in much more expensive cases like dust filters and two 120mm fans, two front USB 3 ports, support for ATX mobos and a side window. Bit OTT on the ventilation for my liking but damn good quality, I highly recommend it to any of the audience of this channel. This is just my personal opinion, hope this helps someone.

      @bertracoon1884 6 лет назад +1

yeah but 15 euros are alot compared to 80 euros. thats an increase of almost 20 percent. in the end thats not alot of money but 15 euros can mean alot, for some people. i think you cant find such a system for 65 euros with shipping.

They were up with 8gbs of RAM before for the same price. And still, 4gbs is still more than the 3gbs of RAM in this prebuild and is enough for all older games or esport titles.
The real advantage tho is that you have 4 real cores with the i5-2400/i5-2500.

These computers are great. I bought a Dell Inspiron 620 6 years ago and have upgraded the power supply, GPU, CPU, and RAM. I then went out to ebay and bought a Dell 390 motherboard for 25 bucks and slapped it into a free case I got from work. I then put in all of the components that I took out of my main computer and made another complete system. 2nd gen Intel Core CPUs are a massive value for the money as they are plentiful and cheap. I just removed my old GTX 650 from that computer today and put in a $50 GTX 750. It screams now. I put the GTX 650 into another computer that I built out of spare parts that has a Pentium 630 which is still Sandy Bridge lol. I can't get away from Sandy Bridge. Maybe someday I'll get to upgrade to a Haswell or even Skylake! I just can't get rid of the old because it's still gold.

Check the size of that PSU, as far as i remember they need to be 150mm deep rather than the full 160mm allowed by the ATX standard, or else they foul the catch for the side panel of the case, but I could be wrong. I have the later optiplex 9010, with a 305 watt gold rated PSU, which blew when I added a 1050Ti, although this may have happened due to my moving house 3 times since i bought it, or the 6 way extension cable I had it plugged into. I myself am using a 2105, i hate the fact that i can't play any modern games, but then again, nor am i interested in them all that much, and the chip works fine otherwise.
Also i'm falling in love with Dell cases. They seem so ergonomic and convenient to maintain with their various clamps and springs and handles. This one looks somewhat decent in terms of airflow too, if front mesh has any space to stick an extra cooler inside that is.

It seems rather important to note that these systems will not work with AMD RX 460/470/480/570/580 cards, as they draw too much power from the PCI-E slot. The exceptions would be many RX 560 cards that apparently do work, as well as a rare mini-ITX 'Sapphire Pulse' variant of the RX 570, but these are almost impossible to find.
With prebuilts, you're best off going with nvidia.
