I’m getting comments about one particular sentence I said in this video so let me address this a little better. I said
“This could have been easily avoidable”
What I’m saying is compared to other ways of passing on (disease, old age, etc) is that suicide/depression as difficult as it is ! Is not inevitable unlike the others.
Again let me be clear that I understand it’s complicating that deals with a lot of psychological issues that are easier said than actually going through with them.
Still there are resources always available to prevent such things and I’d like to at least think there are people with some form of common empathy that could reach out in the most minimum of ways to prevent further actions.
From personal experiences my problem is I always think my friend’s suicide could have been avoidable because I keep thinking it shouldn’t of happened but it did sadly for reasons beyond my control. However I just keep thinking those resources for him were never absent which is why I think and said what I said in that one sentence.
Please know whatever your negative thoughts and mental health may be at the moment that there’s always someone out there to talk to you.

    I met Trevor
at a show last October. He was signing autographs and CDs for fans and he talked to me for a bit and even took pics. My phone camera was barley working and even then he still had the patience to try multiple times. I told him the The Black Dahlia Murder was the only band I ever listen too, which was not exactly true, but pretty close to true since they completely influenced my musical style.
Trevor pointed out my Misfits shirt and I stuttered a bit and then he pointed to the Misfits tattoo on his leg and we both had a laugh. I wish I had talked to him more. I heard him talking to others about how he was excited he was to go bowling in Chelsea.
I wish I could have said more to him and know how things were for him then. I wish I could have known him better. I'm crying a bit as I type this because literally his band meant more to me than any other music in the world no lie.
I hope he finds the peace in death that he was lacking in life.

Trevor Strnad has done more for getting people into "true metal" than all the people calling them posers. Trevor showed that you didn't have to look like the big, spooky dude and needed to wear the black tshirt. Kinda makes the whole "poser" thing kind of ironic in that regard. Travor was always shouting out underground bands and gave people a gateway into more extreme forms of music. Anyone screeching about how they "ruined this and that" has their head up their ass.

I've been dealing with depression a long time. I use jokes to cope, be they puns, word play, crude situational humor, even dad jokes. I make suicide jokes. A lot. Having been on that brink, I saw it as gallows humor. I've made them to friends and family. They know it's what I do and how I deal with it.
When I read the news yesterday, I had to fist fight every fiber of my being to not cry. I was at work. I took care of people that are dying and in pain with that heartbreak, and I felt every second of it. I learned to sing from emulating Trevor and Randy Blythe. I never met the man, but we all knew he loved us.
I'll never make a suicide joke again. I won't leave anyone feeling like this. I miss him, this is how I'll remember him. How i'll honor him.
So to this rat human. This desecrated husk of unbridled jealousy capitalizing on the death of a man whose love is unquestioned, remember there will be no one like him again. And you're a fucking meme.

    • @xenophagia
      @xenophagia 2 года назад +5

Hey bro. That hit me hard and not just because I've battled depression and suicidal ideations my whole life or that I work with people in the same circumstances that you do. I have that same gallows humor and I'll tell ya that Trevor did too (and he was fuckin hilarious). Hell, the people who do the kind of work we do end up having a dark sense of humor, even if they didn't before. It's quite a normal and healthy way to cope. I'm lucky enough to have known Trevor since the mid 00's and he was such an amazing human being. I'll also tell you that he did in fact love all his fans, whether you met him or not. I know that all successful musicians say that, but I got to see that he actually meant that first hand over the years. Trevor had a huge heart man. Losing him has been fuckin tough and I'm right here with you in that. I know how much of a toll the kind of work we do can have on a person too. Especially when dealing with your own loss. I just lost both of my parents back to back last year and had to cope while at work too. When you work with the sick and dying and witness that process over and over, it truly shows you the harsh reality of mortality amongst many other things. It's hard, and I commend you for doing what you do. Your patients are lucky to have someone so caring by their sides. Also, I just want to say, it's perfectly fine if you want to give up those kind of jokes, but you don't have to. Especially if it helps you cope. I know for a fact that just living your life and trying your best to live a good one would be the best possible way to honor Trevor's memory and honor him. If you think that is going to help you do that and better yourself, then go for it, my man! Just don't punish yourself is all I'm saying. Trevor would already be proud of you.
I wish you the absolute best, Andrew. You seem like a real good dude who has great things ahead in life. If you need to talk or something, feel free to just hmu. You can always leave a comment on one my videos to make sure I see it (they're only there for family & stuff, I'm not a YTer or anything lol). Keep shredding and stay strong, bro🤘.

As contrary as his views are, the channel does have some genuine insights on songwriting and melodic development which have caused me to rethink my own songwriting. It's easy to dismiss this guy as a closed-minded elitist, but I think there's genuine value in his videos too.

In general, both newcomers to extreme metal and veterans have given the band overwhelmingly positive reviews. Plenty of great bands started off taking huge inspiration and kinda copying their inspirations until they found their sound. That line is usually used in an accusatory or shameful manner, which is not supportive, and can often reinforce the perception of being a burden on others, which is common for suicidal ideation. That is, if your thought is, "my friends and family are better off without me" then someone yelling at you about how your death would be a burden on them isn't helpful. If you're experiencing suicidal thoughts and you yourself find comfort in thinking about loved ones, that's great, but that's different than someone using your relationships to shame you for being suicidal.

Even when he starts with something cool, he falls into the pentatonic trap and ruins the vibe of the song. He has written some great riffs but too many terrible ones as well. I wanted to do it because I felt like it would let my misery go away forever and I wanted to be happy in heaven rather than be miserable on earth with the situation I was in. People still act like assholes towards me when it comes to whenever I talk about my mental health journey and my history with ableism as I have Autism, GAD, and Depression. I just wanted to be happy. What Mr. Actually said about one of the members of Atheist telling Trevor that he could talk to them made me really mad. I agree with you for most of what you say in this video - but I do want to nitpick one thing. I don't think it's so simple to call suicide selfish, because a lot of times people ARE thinking about their friends and loved ones when they want to kill themselves. From my own experience (and talking to others who have had these thoughts and/or attempts) they often feel like a burden to others and they genuinely believe their loved ones would be better off without them. It gets even messier because sometimes when you're in a dark place for a while, you can legitimately start to be a bit of a burden on others, and friends will often start distancing themselves from you - which validates that perspective.

Yeah, TBDM’s popularity is ONLY due to Trevor’s magnetic personality. It has NOTHING to do with the legendary talent that the band has employed through their career, how they toured the world times over on as many bills as they can humanly handle in a year, the technicality & speed of their music, Trevor’s wide vocal range & power, the quality of execution in a live setting..
This man (Mr. Ackshually) must have some really nice plans to boost the metal community the way that Trevor has over the years with his constant support of underplayed/unknown acts- just as soon as he finishes his plate of tendies. I bet he’s got a folder of riffs on his computer that will bring the metal world to it’s knees, as soon he finds some trve players that can handle how kvlt the songs are.
Like seriously, that man needs to get a fucking life & touch grass. Thanks for calling out this absolute turd. Unhollowed is the reason I even got into metal. I'll never forget when The black dahlia murder, Dying fetus, commit suicide and cattle Decapitation came to our old podunk town of Hagerstown Maryland. Was one of the greatest nights of my life and I think I was about 16 at the time, 33 now. It was such a small venue that we all got to hang out with all the bands and even help them with all their equipment. After the show me and acouple of my best friends had some really amazing weed which was super rare for our area and time but we were honored to share it with Trevor and their guitarist and drummer. They told us so many cool stories and were some of the friendly and humble guys we've ever met. Me and my buddies were gushing over them and thanking them all night for coming to our tiny shitty town and playing for only like 25 people and they put up with us like Champs and even drove us in their stinky tour van to waffle house. Words can't describe how I felt after the news of Trevor's passing. Giving context here, TBDM was basically my FIRST concert experience. Headlining alongside Suffocation, The Zenith Passage, Necrot, and Wormwitch. That day still remains as one of my most amazing experiences. After that I saw them again when they did a mini tour, another amazing performance. Back during high school TBDM was pretty much that bridge I needed to get into more extreme metal. The closest thing I was able to go back then that was considered heavy for me was Sepultura's early stuff and Kreator's. Then TBDM came along and changed everything, since then I been a huge fan of the underground. The amount of playlists, albums, eps, and merchandise I acquired over the years is a testament to that. I never spoken to Trevor personally, but I'll be in denial if I didn't say his lyrics were definitely some of the most comforting. A good portion of the TBDM songs definitely touched on the subject of mental illness and suicide. As an individual that struggled with such things it was a relatable stance. It was probably because of that, also mix in their blend of death metal that I became a devoted fan since high school. While I don't listen to much TBDM now like I use to (more nowadays leaning towards black metal, doomy stuff, ambience and what not). I still nonetheless respect them with high regard. Trevor has introduced me to a slew of killer artists and I'm grateful for that. I'll definitely never forget seeing TBDM twice, seeing Trevor on stage filled with energy. I can only imagine what lingered deep within his battles. Rest In Power Trevor, you'll be very dearly missed.

I think we should never judge or shame someone for considering or actually committing suicide, but we should also do EVERYTHING we can do make sure that they know there are reasons to stick around. We should help them as much as possible. Calling Trevor's suicide the "only time he was more metal than atheist's vocalist" is absolutely unforgiveable. As someone who's been suicidally depressed and had family experience the same, I think it isn't selfish to take one's life due to the sheer amount of suffering one has to experience to be driven to take such a decision. However encouraging it and celebrating it as "metal" is honestly unforgiveable. To clarify I don't think it's selfish to want your friend to stick around and not end their lives. I think some situations are just shit for everyone involved.
Edit: You keep saying "easily avoidable" but it really, really isn't, usually it's a chronic, treatment resistent issue that goes on for many years and doesn't go away regardless of what you try. If it was easily avoidable people wouldn't be dropping left and right due to suicide.
Also, I'm really sorry you and everyone else had to go through your frend's suicide. Nobody deserves that, like you said.

Especially when there's an event like that. Sure, it's not the only solution and people will need further professional help, but when the thoughts are just there, echoing and echoing in the head, they can grow bigger every time they appear. So they can feel there's a way out...

I think the biggest thing that everyone keeps getting wrong I keep hearing was, “this could have easily been avoided.” As someone who has lost 4 friends and a family member to suicide, I have to completely disagree.
You are not designed to want to have harm come to you. You will have a hard time biting through one of your fingers even though it takes the same strength to bite through it that you’d need for a baby carrot. And there is a reason why you have many people have that last minute change of heart. When you’re at a point of actually taking those steps, you’re not thinking rationally, you aren’t fully there anymore. No one would want to hurt their family in that way on purpose, and most people don’t have the mental capacity to actually do it.
Am I saying do nothing? Of course not. But every day I sit there and I think back on all of them and I always ask myself what could I have done differently? Each case for me was different from each other. But at the end of the day some amazing human beings ended up carrying out actions that hurt the most.
If it actually was as easy as you and so many say, I don’t think it would have happened. But the fact that we have access to all these resources and it still is prevalent clearly shows it’s not just something easily avoided. If it was, I’d have my friends and my mother. But sadly it’s complicated, it’s hard, and it’s painful. So now we have the chance to try to move forward, and improve our resources and ways to help others. It’s not enough to just tell the people who are suffering to get help.
To change this we have to change society, we have to be caring, loving, accepting, and nurturing towards each other. It’s the least we can do for the ones we lost needlessly.

Well I’m sorry for those events that took place in your life.
I understand it’s a complicated subject that dives more into the psychological aspect of an individual.
When I said “it’s the most avoidable way of someone losing their life” I mean this in the sense of other ways of passing. (Diseases , old age , etc)
As complicating as it is there’s still resources to prevent it. It doesn’t nor should it be this inevitable thing. Maybe I’m just stubborn cause I keep thinking still about how my friend should still be with me or how I almost lost another friend 7 months ago cause of certain situations.

@@wyattxhim yes there are resources to prevent it. But you need to keep in mind many people don’t have access to it. Another thing you need to keep in mind as well is that you don’t know if someone like Trevor was seeking help.
I can only speak anecdotally, but I watched my mother seek help. My mom had access to some amazing doctors and any medication. She needed. And I watched her as she followed everyone’s advice down to a t. But I also saw it’s limitations, I saw the flaws. Remember as well, Chester from Linkin Park. He was very open about his struggles, about people seeking help, and about him trying to get him and seeing doctors.
I’d actually love to speak to you about this in person if you have a discord or something. No arguments or dumb shit, an actual discussion because I believe it’s important. I think we also see more eye to eye than you think. Again this isn’t an attack on you, I hope you can understand that.

I guess I just hear a lot about how these resources helped out people I know (my friend 7 months ago attempted suicide thankfully failed at it).
I’m not saying I’m absolutely correct with my remark of “it’s easily the most avoidable death” but I’m explaining how I guess in a sense that my friends suicide from 8 years ago shouldn’t of happened in any situation.

Sometimes I worry that the online metal community is just a toxic cesspool of elitism, so it's reassuring when an actual elitist prick shows up to try and capitalise on someone's death (on the same day it happens no less), the result is response videos like this. Good video, troll or not, what this guy said is absolutely vile.

I think they are a really good band. I hated the goofy hipster image they had for the longest time. However, Trevor gave shout outs to my band on a few different platforms. He shouted us out in our home town. He had no clue we were there. After getting to know Trevor, I knew he was a true metal head. He used goofiness and jokes at his own expense all the time. Alot of people who deal with depression do that. Unfortunately Trevor could have gotten some help. He probably just needed an antidepressant. But, I realized he was a really nice guy. He was exceptionally polite to me and the people around me. Prayers to his family and and his band mates. RIP

When I was younger, and even two years ago, I was on the edge of suicide. Amazing how a gun barrel tastes, you never forget it. I was at the lowest points of my life.
If I'd have pulled the trigger two years ago when I last had a Kimber in my maw, I'd have never gotten back with the best person I've ever met. I'd have never gotten married. And I'd have never gotten the love of my life pregnant and be ready to bring new life into this world.
To think it's selfish to want to stop people from killing themselves.... that's infuriating. Sometimes we get so blinded to the darkness in our lives we forget that we can find a way out. There is some form of salvation. And we can find another reason to stay alive.
I've had a cousin commit suicide, almost 20 years ago now. His daughter just became the first on our maternal side of the family to graduate from college. He'd have been so proud. But one moment of weakness lead to a decision there was no going back from. He used liquid cough syrup to swallow an entire cabinet of pills because his wife cheated on him. He parked his truck in the woods in a Louisiana summer, and his body wasn't found for a week. Closed casket funerals aren't fun. There's no real closure.
My point is. There's nothing selfish about trying to save someone from killing themselves. We all have a reason to live. Sometimes our inner demons blind us to that. And that's when we make that mistake of pulling the trigger or kicking the chair.
I'll stay alive as long as I can. For my wife. For my child. To be able to tell the story of my life and teach lessons

I've been at the breaking point before. I've been three inches away from my knife and it would've been so easy to just end it, but I held on. I knew there were people who would wish they could've done something.
To say it's selfish to want to talk someone out of suicide is the most fucking asinine point about the topic. This man has obviously never lost someone or even almost lost someone to suicide.
To take someone's suicide and go and say that it was the most metal thing he's done, is a fucking vile and horrendous thing to do. Metal is a lot of things, and yes in metal you will find songs about murder and even suicide, but there's a line between music and reality. And when someone tragically takes their own life and you say some vile shit like that, you've crossed that line.
Metal is about unfiltered expression, people like this who gatekeep music and then go to say shit like this aren't true metalheads. They're the same as people who think that only classical music is true music. They fail to understand the true nature of art as a medium of self expression and creativity where good and bad are completely subjective. Instead they see music as something that's quality objectively measured using a checklist of techniques or stylistic influences it has.
I know this has been long but people like this really piss me the fuck off.

TBDM is in no way an easy band to listen to if youre not into metal. I think its a disservice to call them boring and easy going accessible music when they really were one of the bands that defined melodic death metal and helped pave the path for so many other bands regardless of the genre. trevor was one of the nicest people i have ever met and he was vocal and adamant about mental health and supporting those around you. he will be missed and the metal scene would not be the same without his impact.

Hey mate I appreciate what you're saying because I woke up to news of Trevor's death and it brought me to tears. To say he was HUGE in my musicial life is an understatement. I don't know who ol mate is, don't know why he's using a tradegy for clout by shitting on Trevor and BDM but his main gripe was with the Atheist vocalist. Trevor was very open about his struggles with mental health and the avenues he had taken to try and turn himself around. He had time off during COVID. He's one of the most respected vocalists in one of the most seminal, hugely influential bands in modern metal with a storied 20 year career, so many accolades, everyone loved him, he was living his dream, he has a missus who adores him and worships him and still with all of that he fell it necessary to end his life. He had tried the meds and drugs and talking and therapy and he still didn't see a way out. Some times feelings are temporary but some people's suffering is ongoing. If that's what brings them peace then who are we to force them to keep going for us ? R.I.P Trevor

Attempting suicide within those moments cuts away so much that’s yet to happen in life. I understand it’s an ongoing mental battle no matter what there’s always another thing to experience in life. Call me overly Optimistic with that takes my take.
