Family Guy's (Almost) Perfect Episode

- In this week's video I chat about Season 8’s Brian & Stewie, which can be best described as Seth McFarlene talking to himself for 25 minutes. Because this entire full Family Guy episode, it takes place in just one room, has no cutaways, and purely focuses on just 2 characters.
It is one of the best episodes the show has ever done, but falls just a bit short of perfection. Let’s get into why this episode works, and what's holding it back from true greatness.
On this channel we look at the funniest Family Guy moments from Peter, Lois, Chris, Meg and Brian. As well as other Family Guy characters from Quahog Rhode Island.

Now that I think about it Brian and Stewe go alot of places together but you never see him carrying a diaper bag or snacks.
Wow very early to comment!
True.. why is that?
How is this a day old it just released
A day ago? U a time traveler or sum?

This and "And then they were fewer" were my favorite family guy episodes and I often rewatch them.
Same then they were fewer is my favorite episode
@@goldenpaladinyeah. I had no idea how depressing that episode was what with Jillian being pregnant and losing the baby
well "this" one kinda sucks
i love and then there were fewer!!! 😮💨
same they don't get enough recognition fr
This was a pretty deep episode,
but I agree the puke and dookie was
a bit too much.
Too funny! Lmaooo
I have 2 theories on the poop scene:
1. The executives told the writers to put at least one raunchy/gross joke within the episode
2. The scene is their way of proving that they *can* tell a serious story depsite doing an intense gross-out joke at the beginning of the episode.
I'd say there's also a level of misdirection with that one. Trying to revolt the viewer early on in the episode to see how committed they are to watching the rest of the episode. Plus, I really think that high stakes argument before the more heart felt moments make those moments even more precious.
Plus, jokes about how dogs eat disgusting things. I always roll my eyes at Farmer's Dog or Blue Buffalo commercials. Dogs DO eat their own excrement.
@@mightyfilmthat’s a good theory
@@mightyfilm That’s genius because it could also misdirect those who usually enjoy that type of raunchy humor Family Guy does.
If 2 was their way of thinking, that's exactly why they never won an Emmy.
It's like saying "I can still make a delicious dinner even though I take a crap on top of it before I serve it to you"
Some things just don't belong together, and you shouldn't eat a dinner with a crap on it even if you cut around the turd.
Despite people wanting to pretend otherwise because they're "anti-status quo" there is such a thing as artistic integrity and people recognize it inherently. The most beautiful sculpture could exist, but if it's made of literal crap, nobody wants to see it unless they're actually insane.
@@mightyfilm I don't find it that revolting because they don't actually show what's happening. It's just Brian's head moving back and forth. However they must know the people keeping them from receiving their Emmy would think that.
This is really one of my favorite Family Guy episodes. With no background music or the normal silly cutaways it forces the viewer to focus on the two characters which is a good thing.
This episode is one of a kind! Brians serious talk was very relatable for me. I might not watch family guy as much as others I'll admit this is my favorite episode of the series.
This episode was incredible. You learned so much in this and it hasn't really been explored in family guy before. This episode was unique for several reasons. I can actually relate to Brian after seeing the episode. And Stewie admits he really cares a lot about Brian. Heck even more than the rest of the family and Brian is a dog! Stewie may not be good most of the time and especially Brian but he really loves him and knows he won't be happy and move on without him.
*No cut aways* Great character building and chemistry IMO
The one thing that holds this episode back from being a perfect episode is definitely the diaper scene.
What I love about this episode is just how serious Brian is. Especially he doesn't know what his purpose might be in life, but he knows he has a purpose to be with Stewie which is very wholesome 🥰❤️
Apparently, Brian's purpose anymore is being everyone's punching bag...
Actually, the Hulu version of this episode does have that opening monologue, the family guy intro, and then the deleted scenes from past episodes after the real episode
I wonder why Hulu does that. In the episode that starts out with the Griffins coming to Cleveland’s house to see the Smith’s, the Hulu version cuts half of that scene out. Where Meg and Chris are talking to Steve and Hailey.
Same for the episode where Stewie runs a simulation and him and Brian go to the CIA. The bathroom conversation scene is removed.
this genuinely was one of my favourite episodes from family guy and it was amazingly beautiful
This episode just proves that Brian and stewie are one of the best duos in animation they some of the best examples of a great relationship
I kinda wish this type of episode about s***ide, was to do with Meg only because she took so much abuse over the years that I imagined it as Meg after suffering one too many things in one day tries to off herself, and in doing so makes the whole family turn a cheek for the better, not like the episode where it ended with remaining as the family's punching glue bag.
2:43 12 Angry Men is my favorite movie ever. Love it getting a reference here.
TW ⚠️: Mental Health / Sucidal thoughts
Personally, this episode actually made me cry. I oddly found it comforting knowing I wasn’t alone in how I feel. The feeling of “ having a way out. “ is comforting in a strange way. It was nice that they touched on a serious topic but in a semi respectful way.
This one really tugs at the heartstrings and show some great character between Brian and Stewie. I've noticed over the years, Family Guy's been trying so much conversational humor that they can't pull it off like Dr Katz psychiatrist. However, this is a really good outlier to the progression and has been a good example of a great Family Guy episode! Not Perfect but close enough...😅❤
I love how openly you talk about YT censorship. I've been using this platfrom since 2007. It's so sad to see how much it has changed since those days and the impact it has on creators. Keep up the great work Lydia, I love these videos so much ❤
The lack of cutaways is why I love this episode. It’s also why I prefer American Dad these days
American Dad is The IT show
I hope it becomes the Main Show because Roger Deserves to be the Main Character
One reason I love this episode is because Seth is pretty much talking to himself
Honestly I love this episode because both Brian and Stewie have a bit of a heart to heart
i remember watching this episode on tv when it came out. loved it when i was 12 and the episode still holds up today
The Hulu version actually still has the original intro with Brian and Stewie, as of writing this.
This has always been my favourite Family Guy episode. No contest.
Take out the "Brian eating Stewie's poop" scene and I would say this episode pretty much perfect.
to think this episode was only made to prove if family guy can do an episode without cutaways. I wished they did more of episodes like this. Give other family members a chance to talk. Maybe do one of peter and stewie as we know peter can understand him and maybe show that he knows that stewie is smart but never mention it because he did not care as much.
The dialogue at this episode is just Mcfarland speaking to himself but as just a dialogue I find really good
The two part murder mystery episode in almost perfect
This kind of episode goes to show a timeless truth in writing: nothing hits more than just two people sitting down and talking.
@ 1:32 Brian asks where else got the money to buy the $3000 sweater: yet nobody asks how Stewie got the money to buy all his weapons?
He probably stole some of them, nobody would suspect a baby to have weapons or steal them, it’s the perfect crime.
So good of a video I had to watch it again, keep it up Lydia and James! Can’t wait to see what’s next 😊
This is my second favorite episode after ‘Brian Wallows Peter Swallows’
I didn’t expect much from this episode when I watched it as a younger person, but it was so good. Except for the poop and vomit eating of course
this is one of the greatest episodes of the show. glad someone likes it. not many seem to like it.
I didn't like it one bit, because Brian and Stewie are my two _least_ favorite characters on the show.
That's right. My TWO LEAST FAVORITE CHARACTERS.
@@PintheDogsome of the worst rage bait I’ve ever seen tbh
@@Luvs2spwge-xu6rd Not doing that for rage bait. Whatever that is. Brian and Stewie are actually my two least favorite characters on the show.
@@PintheDogthose are the best characters
@@RoseQuartz692 There are others who don't think so. Accept that.
And to think they only made it for budget restrictions boggles the mind
This is one of my favourite episodes. I love Brian and Stewie's chemistry in this. Thank you for reviewing this Lydia, this was a great video. 😊
The intro was still there on Hulu last time I watched it a few weeks ago.
I wonder why Hulu does that. In the episode that starts out with the Griffins coming to Cleveland’s house to see the Smith’s, the Hulu version cuts half of that scene out. Where Meg and Chris are talking to Steve and Hailey.

@@AGZhark idk it’s very weird. I’m still not happy that the abortion episode is unavailable on Hulu.
This episode. And then they were fewer. And the episode where Lois went insane about not being customer of the month, that episode made me go "wow. I haven't see an episode of family guy this good in a longggg time."
"You have enough to buy fake mustaches but you can't give me my money??" 😅
"How much you pay for that fake mustache?"
my favorite part of this episode is that it was able to work perfectly without cutaway gags.. like, it took itself just about serious enough, while still being funny within its own rights
A bit backhanded, don’t you think
@@AGZhark i don't know what that means
Stewie and Brian are inseparable and it’s sweet to see them I an episode just the 2 of them
"I love you as one loves another person whom one simply can not do without."
That phrase is such a powerful way to tell someone you truly love and value them.
So... an episode where Seth McFarland can revalidate his purpose?
Brian is basically Seth persona.
The bestie and I watched this during lockdown and we were so impacted by it, we STILL reference it today
I'm pretty sure that the version available on Hulu (at least in the US) has the original intro from Brian and Stewie. I do recall seeing it on several occasions when watching the series online.
I wonder why Hulu does that. In the episode that starts out with the Griffins coming to Cleveland’s house to see the Smith’s, the Hulu version cuts half of that scene out. Where Meg and Chris are talking to Steve and Hailey.

6:15 i find it so funny when Brian is called Seth MacFarlanes fursona
As a kid I wasn't really a fan of this episode, but nowadays I think this could become one of my favourites. I really should rewatch this episode
I agree with the gross out joke being the one and only thing that makes this episode not be completely perfect, but Stewie going “got some desert for you” always makes me laugh 😅😂
Rewatching the episode on Hulu. Stewie and Brain definitely still introduce the episode so I’m unsure why you said it was removed from everything. Idk about everything else but you mentioned hulu and it’s definitely still there.
Aswell as it still has the colorful intro with the song. However it’s not directly at the beginning of the episode rather a little after.
The diaper part was bad, but at least they didn't overdo it. Because let's face it, Brian must have had to do that many times if they were in there for three days. And I've no doubt later FG would have shown every single one and driven the joke into the ground.
“Almost perfect” literally the one episode of family guy I can’t watch 😂
Video idea: rank every family guy episode I know LS Mark did it before you but I'm sure he'll be ok with it
Hoping to release that video sometime later this year 🙂
I was atchley talking about that with her
You should do a video on Family Guy’s most controversial and infamous episode, Screams Of Silence: The Story Of Brenda Q.
@@LydiaLovesTimelinesdefinitely looking forward to that one, Lydia 😂
@@LydiaLovesTimelinesYAYY!!❤
In America that beginning Brian and Stewie scene has been and still is on the ep intro on Hulu
As good as this episode is, I don't think it's as good as the best episodes of American Dad
The 200
Rapture's Delight
Rabbit Ears
Productive Panic!!!!!!
And that's all I can think of off the top of my head.
Gold Top.
Forgot about that one
"lets make an episode without any of the things that make the show great so that random critics say its a masterpiece"
Ya know
Whenever I watch this episode specifically I do agree with why Brain has the gun
I have a knife under my bed for the same reason Brian has the Gun in the safety deposit box
Just in the case where everything goes to the limit
It’s comforting to know that it’s there but I’m never going to use it cause i value my life and will always appreciate this episode for showing me that life has reason to stick to the end for
It could’ve done without the poop eating scene, but thankfully we didn’t see it onscreen.
I think Peter & Meg could use an episode like this. Remember when you suggested Meg wasn't a punching bag anymore? I probably won't believe that until Peter actually treats her like a daughter, the same way Lois did.
I'd like to see how they actually feel about eachother. (without cutaways distracting us)
But I wouldn't include disgusting humor, like the diaper scene.
Brian and stewie episodes >>>
This is the episode that Made Both Brian and Stewie The *MAIN* Characters Of Not just The Episode but the *ENTIRE* show
The Meg video wasn’t in the description, just so you know!
I’ll just have to watch every video on your channel til I find it I guess
super Video, danke schön. Bin froh die Serie nicht mehr zu sehen, obwohl ich ab und an doch wieder darüber nachdenke.
That bank vault gives off the whole Stockholm Syndrome feel.
I don’t know if this fact is true or not but I heard that Seth MacFarlane was in a bet that he had to use no music or cutaways for this episode
I’ve not seen this episode, maybe I’ll check it out. Not used to proper deep themes in Family Guy, but it brings to mind how people say modern Simpsons is crap because it’s more sentimental. I feel they deliberately forget about how the first 3 seasons have quite a lot of sad bits in amongst the comedy. Talking of Simpsons, I watched those modern episodes that you recommended to me a few weeks back and I loved them all. Pixelated And Afraid was fantastic and I watched Lisa The Boy Scout as well, it was hilarious but how COULD you threaten to delete Baby Groot?!?
A Meg and Chris story like this would be very interesting now
This is probably my all time favorite episode of Family Guy
Id love to see a video about Stan Thompson (Megs bio dad) and how there relationship has come about from the mentions he had early on to when he was finally revealed last year and how that story has progressed
I remember seeing this when it came out. It was anxiety overload during, and afterwards i felt a sense of loss and missing out. I didnt have a stewie at that point, noone who cared enough.
I dont watch this episode much for that reason.
2:34 a friend of mine and I were going to perform a stage version of this episode as part of a drama episode. I was going to be Brian.
Can't remember why we didn't do it. Was years ago now. One of us was too busy or something.
You should definitely do Brian Wallows and Peter’s Swallows, one of the best episode in my opinion
Idk when I first watched this I didn't really like it, but going back on it is actually quite good
Damn... you might make me go back and watch family guy again
While yes I’ll admit seeing these two together without music, cut away gags or really anything else it is an interesting episode but with it being Family Guy I just can say I like these moments from the characters because my mind is always going “Ok it’s a sweet moment who’s coming to ruin it?” Even if it isn’t my mind still wonders that question and I just can’t give the show credit for sweet moments between characters sadly
It’s been my favorite since it aired. Seth nailed the special episodes
Before I watch this, I’m gonna assume the almost is Brian eating Stewie’s…waste.
The moment when it becomes clear Brian thinks about offing himself was the punch to the character he desperately needed. Personally, I think Brian's the kind to contemplate it, but never would actually commit to it. He just wants the piece of mind of knowing he can stop everything at any point. And it gives Brian this hidden depth of being extremely sad and needing help and using his pseudo-intellectual persona as a mask. You know, rather than trying to make good with Conservative viewers that were pissed over the character's lecturing moments. And they never under cut it or go the "death is meaningless" route, and it's just more emotional in that one moment than when they actually killed off the character.
Though, between this and the the episode of American Dad where Steve calls Stan in front of his class (he couldn't get him to talk about things for his report) and Stan says how he thinks about the same thing and is only happy for five seconds in the morning before he remembers who he is...uh...Seth? You okay, Bro?
Funny to say, this was my first ever episode I watched.
This was my favourite episode when I was young
I agree with Mr. Enter this episode while good doesn't properly represent Family Guy.
I’m actually surprised no ones mentioned the episode “Send in Stewie” that’s a great character analysis of Stewie with no B plot or cutaway gags if i remember correctly
Great review by the way
Family guy’s almost perfect episode: removes everything that makes family guy family guy
This episode is an interesting one. While it is a deep dive into characters, their relationships, and their inner demons, it is also a bad episode.
What I mean by that is that for the structure of a Family Guy episode, the pacing is wrong, the jokes and comedy is wrong, and the focus of the story is wrong. So while it's an entertaining episode it is a bad Family Guy episode.
It is interesting that some shows will have non standard episodes torn apart because it "Doesn't mesh with the expectations of the audience" (like if a serious drama did a comedy episode) yet people give exceptions to it when it's a show that is primarily comedy being serious. It just feels like a bit of a hypocritical double standard.
If this was the actual last episode that Seth wrote then what a way to go out.
Tell you the truth, this was my last time ever watch family Guy because, when they were making their next season it wasn't funny it wasn't good it was bad, so mainly this episode right here, is perfect 🙂👍
Great video, Lydia! I love it when you cover Family Guy, I just wish you talked more about the conversation Stewie and Brian have near the end, and how it correlates with their relationship; Family Guy can be brilliant when it takes things seriously ❤
I feel like this episode was in response to critics constantly saying how low brow Family Guy is in comparison to other adult animations but ironically I remember this episode getting panned for coming off as trying too hard or being Emmy bait
They did a pretty good job of proving the critics right, which is funnier than anything in this episode itself
That's the same gun Brain got in the episode when they went to Texas.
One of my favorite episodes
Please do a case study on "Send in Stewie" one of the most underappreciated episodes of modern family guy
This episode has always felt like it was trying way too hard to be serious that it just ends up becoming an unfunny joke. The poop eating didn't need to be included. It might be realistic and a sign of their level of trust in each other but there could have been dozens of different ways to show something similar. Brian's suicide gun, while fitting the character, is just way too melodramatic and feels hollow. The whole episode feels like shameless emmy bait. That said, it's still way better than the other bottle episode with stewie and the psychiatrist.
S16E12 “Send in Stewie, Please” was like this for me. I feel like it lost something by not having the Stewie-Brian chemistry, but was a great exploration of Stewie’s potential by himself. Unfortunately I don’t think the episode was received very well by most of the standard viewers. Which is such a shame because it legitimately had some great jokes.
Hey Lydia, I also think that the 2007 writer’s strike kind of soured Seth’s relationship with Family Guy since they finished three episodes while he was striking and he was angered by this.
Seth talking to himself basically 😂
One of my favorite episodes.
I get the intro before the episode starts with Brian and stewie
I've seen that Cellar episode! one of the only times Archie genuinely regretted his bigotry when he thought the black guy was god🤣
3:32 i know right?! But i bypass to say "offline/deactivate" much coded in transformers terms or in robot terms self destruct.
Also I’ve seen the bottle episode format used in 2 episodes of the bbc sitcom Miranda (2009-15)
This episode was great and heartfelt. I love the sincerity in it, despite some of the goofy shit in it.
