After watching your video I just LOOKED at my clutch safety switch on my 2009 Kia Spectra and lo and behold, the switch wasn't getting pushed in. I fixed that in a hurry. Thanks !

Thank you. This video was incredibly helpful. You speak simply and clearly and everything is well lit. The only way it could be improved is if you showed an example of how a bad, or failing, switch reacts.

When you get the switch out of the vehicle. And attach the multi-meter in the ohm setting, and you push the button on the switch (which is what it is), and the meter does nothing. The switch is bad. I hope this helps.

The initial reading 0.L is NOT zero, rather indicates "Overload" OL, which means a vary high resistance (open circuit), that's what you want, until you press the switch and get a "closed circuit" which would be zero, or a fairly low number. (The meter should also indicate 0.L when the leads are not connected to anything and zero when touched together) Great video! Thanks!

I thought ol stood for "open line".

I believe it is actually over limit. If you think you should be reading something and get this, switch to a higher range.

OL in this test is an abbreviation for “Open Loop” but it can represent different things such as "Over Load" for different tests and multimeter modes.

Great information. We checked the clutch safety switch on a 2006 Nissan Sentra that wouldn't start and found the piece of hard plastic that presses the switch button was broken off. The switch was still good and we manually pressed it, then the car started. This can save a lot of money and time.

If you don't have a multimeter, after you disconnect the switch, you can bridge the connecting on the plug with a wire, paperclip, etc. and see if the car will start. Just make sure you're in neutral.

I know you won’t agree but I ripped out the wires, twisted them together, and electrical taped them. It was tight enough getting at those wires. I can only imagine how hard it would have been to get in there to remove switch and replace. My brain is hard wired to press the clutch in anyway every time I start the car.

    New follower 👋 here
Sure wish I'd found this video over the last few months before it totally went out. Heck I could have replaced that thing myself. It was getting harder and harder to get it to crank with multiple clutch depressions. *had to hold my mouth just right* 😬 I knew it was that switch going bad. The truck sat for a couple of years and now I'm paying for it.
Now my old truck is sitting at a service station that I barely made it into on Friday.
Waiting for diagnosis in a few hours.
Also have a fuel issue. Probably my fuel pump on my 88 S10 which the bed has to be jacked up for and I'm afraid of the estimate because I replaced it last time in sun in 95 degree weather 🙄
Glad that service station also has a tow truck. That may be my cheapest route right now. ☹

Very clear instructions, but the resistance of the switch should be a few ohms or microohms, not Mohms. A resistance in Mohms is almost an open circuit.

    • @IsraelMacias-214
      @IsraelMacias-214 25 дней назад

I thought that was the case too - or are the switches active components that have transistors or diodes in line? If it's under 10 ohms, I can probably just tie the two wires together to bypass the switch all together right?

  • @thecuss6817

I'd been having intermittent "failure to crank" issue on my 1998 Mazda B2200 truck. I had tested for voltage passing through the clutch starter safety switch and always found power getting through the electrical part of the ignition switch and the clutch starter safety switch. But I had wondered if I was having intermittent high resistance of my clutch starter safety switch, so I took it out, measured its ohms, and found that was happening. So I dismantled my switch, cleaned out some old grease with a swab, put it back together, tested it again (fine) and re-installed it, fine since.

Why is the resistance 12M Ohms? Shouldn't it be rather a few Ohms if the switch goes closed circuit?

This is completely different from my 007 Corolla/Matrix. The switch is on the floor board. The pedal even has a tab on it you can wrap tape around to take up slack, which I am trying after I re seated the connector, which always worked by itself in Navy avionics. Looks like an easy replacement if that doesn't work. No. I didn't test it. I was getting intermittent starting.

My car is reading that it needs this new switch. It's a 2007 chevy cobalt. Problem I'm having is at an idle the cars rpms go up and even the speedometer jumps up and down at a stop then dies... does it sound like this switch can do that if it's bad? Thanks.

The throttle body needs cleaned, it gunks up and doesn't fully close causing the problem you've described.

Not mega Ohms, just Ohms, should be 0 but wires and connection add some resistance.

I need to jumper mine on a bypass as I am 1960's style where any such thing would be laughable → Given what I have seen so-far this resembles the jack-screw runaway issue and the machine would go into panic mode if it moved with "clutch depressed" signaling promptly deploying drogue chute and calling for Drone Enforcement ~ is this an NO or NC switch and is it single pole or like the printer on IBM 1403

So theoretically, I could cut one of those wires to the clutch switch, and route it to a separate kill switch and then back to the clutch switch to prevent the vehicle from starting or being stolen......as in Kia or Hyundai.
