Great video. You explained the bench testing so quickly and clearly. My first electrical tech teacher took over 3 hours of lecture time and still have the class didnt get it. LOL
Hector, thank you for the refreshing change. Most automotive repair videos are PAINFUL to watch. They can't communicate, can't record video, and can't pronounce the parts they're talking about. I sure hope you're making some bank from these videos because you're not only intelligent, but also talking to you're audience like you recognize their intelligence, too. You're a rare breed..keep it up!
the way I tested prior to seeing these videos: opened cover, inspected for burns or broken coils, used dmm on continuity mode to test connection points. I used a 12vdc 1.5amp appliance power adapter afterwards. thank you!
You should always test the 30- 87 or 87a connection for Resistance. You can measure voltage or use a test light and that connection might look okay but still have burned or corroded contacts which will give you a Voltage drop/higher than normal Resistance which could prevent enough current from flowing to the Load. Your Resistance measurement should show NO resistance. There should be NO Voltage drop across those contacts. Otherwise you did a very good job producing this Video on this subject.
I congratulate you and encourage you to do more of this type of video for electrical systems. One of the most common faults with relays is burnt contacts. Resistance checks don't work . A voltage test across the contacts under load is the test to use
1magnit I have a silly question. How can you put a “load” on a relay that doesn’t work? If the contacts are bad or weak won’t they drop out because of the initial inrush or load? Just a couple of honest questions.
A relay has 2 main parts, the coil and the contacts. You need to be more specific on what doesn't work? A open circuit coil? or contacts that don't "make" A coil doesn't have an inrush current. The load that's switched by the contacts might or might nor, depends on the type of load.
Some relays have a diode in parallel with the coil, hence the direction of connection on these will be important. There are also some relays where pins 30 and 86 are reversed. If you mix up these 2 types (they plug into the same housing) then you land up with some odd effects!
