You guys saved me in a few ways that I really don't think just saying Thank You is enough to let you know how very much you saved this low income back yard mechanic. I was working under stress to get my truck back on the road because my truck is how I make money to survive. I will tell my friends and anyone else that has these kinds of trouble to visit your site and subscribe. Plain simple explanations on how to do these repairs is a heaven send. To all of you I say Godspeed and please keep up this wonderful way of saving people so many thousands of dollars.
Thank you for an excellent video. I had to replace my master cylinder on my 2007 F350 and this was perfectly explained (mine had the black on black retainer).
Thanks very much for the tutorial. Lost my cruise control and I had tried everything: at least I thought I had. Even a diagnostic indicated that it was the clock spring but I wasn’t buying it since horn blew and the cc switches lit up. Kept searching and found your procedure for replacing the switch and that it was possible this effected my cc. Once I got a good look it I could see several wron areas and breaks in the switch. Tools included a head lamp, a bench for laying my feet on as they hung out the door. My granddaughters stuffed animal to lay my head on under the console on the floor and lastly the nerve to just do it. It took me all of 45min and it was done. The first test was would it start, and that passed sat. The second was the test drive and now I have cruise. Your video saved me $100’s thanks much. Jeff
Good job! Its been months since i took this apart and kind of forgot the details of reinstalling the switch. It really helped me to lift one side of the switch to slide it in there. Thanks for the help.
Your excellent video saved the day! I was contorted like a snake trying to get a proper look at how to disconnect the switch and even used a few bad words, usually reserved for when I smash my finger with a hammer, but to no avail. I just could not see how to get the thing out. Then I looked here on RUclips and found this video, When I went back out to the truck, I had the switch out in two minutes,,,and with no fowl language whatsoever! Thanks!
Thanks for the video! This is the only place I could find that shows how to remove the Ranger switch. I was figuring the push rod had to come off somehow, because that's how the new switch comes. I wanted to remove my old one for a friend, and was about to give up and let it go to the scrapyard along with my wrecked truck. One day later and it would have been gone!
FOR ANYBODY TRYING TO CHANGE JUST THE PUSHROD WITHOUT REMOVING THE MASTER. All you need is a cheap ink pen. Pull the pen apart so all that you have left is the tube. The tube has the exact inside and outside diameters for this job! Cut the tube in half, then put a slice all the way down one side of it, long ways, so you can open it up and wrap it around the pushrod(don't cut the tube into 2 pieces). Once you wrap it around the rod, hold pressure on the rod twords the master and take a pair of pliers and work the tube in so that it gets between the rod and the master to release the two locking tabs. The rod will pop right out. Its actually very very easy! Hope this helps👍
Thanks for the video. I have a 95 f150 and my rod broke on the end with the ring on it, so it wouldn’t hold, which made my clutch fall to the floor. Everything makes sense except for how to get the rod out of the master cylinder? I don’t want to pull too hard, it seems stuck and I don’t want to cause further damage. Thanks!
The video was very helpful, but I need a little more information. I went to replace my Dad’s 95 F250 clutch switch, but there’s no hook attaching it to the master cylinder. Where would I get one, and what is it called? None of the Auto parts stores even know what it is. Please help, if you can?
I've got a 2013 Dodge Dart that won't start. I think/hope it's the clutch safety switch, but even with your explanation, I can't seem to find it. On the Dart, the push rod appears to go directly into the floor. Could the switch be on the other side of the firewall?
I have the dodge style switch on my 1998 s10, I just recently replaced it and it now sticks, and will not return when the pedal is released. Did I install it wrong, or does it just need a little grease?
What are the dangers of bypassing this piece? I bypassed with a copper wire on a ford. I can buy the piece & reinstall since I only have to pull off the copper wire.
Man what a great video, i did have one question though, when you say "you get one chance to lock that in" what do you mean? reason i ask is because a buddy of mines clutch messed up tonight and we are going to work on it tomorrow, it is the first style you showed and we did mess with it a bit tonight and i remember i reached under the dash and that part that you mentioned that locks in actually came out with no trouble at all, what i think happened is the retainer that holds the rod to the clutch pedal broke and the whole rod and interlock switch just fell out in my hands.this clutch is like a year old so its basically new, maybe the person that installed it previously didn't snap it in place at the slave cylinder?
On my 98 dodge ram the switch is on right far as I can tell and know but will not crank when clutch is pressed in the switch isn't making contact as should but I can reach under with truck in neutral and e brake set amd grab switch and pull it up the rod and it will crank so maybe is the switch worn being there is no adjustment that I'm aware of for it
How do you remove the old push rod that has the quick disconnect end. When buying the replacement clutch pedal position switch they give you the whole unit which consists of new shaft with switch on it ready to install, but you can't get the old rod out. Do you have to use a quick disconnect tool? My old one is rusty. And it looks like one you removed from the jeep set up with the little white plastic retainer and the two tangs that you have to squeeze and pull back to remove. Do you think that someone could have rigged the jeep one Ina ford ranger? Because this is a quagmire that I'm faced with. All sources are telling me that the one you call the ford part is not like mine. It looks exactly like the jeep one . How can that be?
I’m in the same boat. My Ford switch looks like what he is calling the Jeep type. Also, I just want to replace the rod. Looking for a way to remove that rod.
Interesting... I just noticed my '04 Ford Ranger doesn't have the starter switch. That might explain why I've been having issues getting it to turn on 🤔
If the push rod doesn't hold in the master cylinder do I need a new master cylinder? Working on a 00 f250 with a busted switch but may need to replace the whole master cylinder if this is the case. Thanks
Correct name is "interlock switch" been called that since the 80s,once a few people got hurt by runaway cars the corporate lawyers had these little things invented, dont see the issue with what its called,we get the point, its a great video and the guy explains everything very nicely, without a video like this some idiot would try and put the switch in backwards or break it altogether.
I know you asked this 6 months ago. But i just changed my pushrod today, without taking out the master out. The rod will pop right out. Its actually very very easy.
You don't give enough info for installing. It would have been nice to know about the little hanger that you needed to push out of the bracket to disconnect the plug. It would have saved a lot of time and trouble. Otherwise a person will end up unscrewing the main bracket from the firewall. Other than that, very helpful.

The ONLY good explanation of how to remove the Ford clutch rod on the Internet. FINALLY!!
Thank you for an excellent video. I had to replace my master cylinder on my 2007 F350 and this was perfectly explained (mine had the black on black retainer).
Excellent video instruction. Without this video I would have been still working on it hours later. It only took a few minutes thanks to the video!

Thank you... Very easy to change once I saw how it works. Great vid

The magnetic one is used in new Jeep Wrangler JL’s 2018 and up... this helped me. Thank you! Makes sense that it’s used for the cruise control.
Thanks, saved me a lot of time on the old F350.
You don't need a video to figure this out, but it's really nice to see the details out in the open before starting. Great video! Thanks.

Thank you. My push rod broke today on my 95 f150.
My question now is how do I lock the push rod back in after pulling it out?
@@quackinator1609. Just push it in. You'll hear it click.
@@darrenfletcher7679, glad it helped👍
@@TripAMD been trying that for the past 1 hour now. I even push it down while pressing on the clutch and still nothing
Great video, great help. Thank you!
Glad it helped! Thank you!
Just what I needed.
Thanks
Thank you for this video. I would have accidentally broke this If I wasn't paying attention when I was trying to replace my Master Cylinder.

While tightening the clutch arm to the spline, the shaft broke.
Is there any tricks to install the arm on the spline? 1996 ford f150
The switch cover slides on the Ford I was working on. The keeper, when disengaged, allows the switch to rotate for easier access.
Can you replace the push rod during this or is there more to it ?

Does anyone answer questions here? My 94 f250 7.3 idi, is a combination of the dodge switch and the Ford switch. But do I put the foam ring in ?
How do you unlock the push rod to replace the rod
My start switch was like the one on the dodge, but I have a Ford!
It says ford on the cover
On my 98 dodge ram the switch is on right far as I can tell and know but will not crank when clutch is pressed in the switch isn't making contact as should but I can reach under with truck in neutral and e brake set amd grab switch and pull it up the rod and it will crank so maybe is the switch worn being there is no adjustment that I'm aware of for it

Excellent better than bypassing it.
great video ! thank you very much.
Is there a way to test the switch?
On the Ford system o don't have that clip. The switch can free spin. Is this An issue?
Interesting... I just noticed my '04 Ford Ranger doesn't have the starter switch. That might explain why I've been having issues getting it to turn on 🤔
What if your changing rod also
Why are people giving this a thumbs down?
How can I test it to verify it’s bad first?

Thank you.
Why would anyone thumbs down this vid ???
Because that IS NOT a "start switch" it is a CLUTCH SAFETY SWITCH, better known as a neutral SAFTY switch, gesh guys get a clue.
You’ve got issues

Xcellant job ez to understand !😊
so on my jeep the tabs holding pushrod appear to have broken. any fix. my rod will fall through firewall when back pulling on clutch pedal. good video

perfectionclutch, what happens if the clutch start does't work in a 2001 ford range, engine won't crank?
I think you got the Ford and Dodge mixed up
Hello hope you could help. Why does my cup fuse keeps blowing out?
So the switch itself shouldn't have a lot of play in it on the rod
... thanks for the useful information
Great !
Will this start switch cause the truck to pop out of gear and just rev up
no, it only makes it so you have to depress the clutch to start the truck
Gesh guy, show the hard part, removing it from the vehicle.
