  • What is LIGHTOPIA at Alton Towers. A Magical and immersive walkthrough Christmas Wonder themed attraction. Lightopia is a spectacular lantern and light festival. Explore interactive exhibits, immersive light installations, and the magical illuminated trail wondering through areas of Alton Towers you wouldn't normally see this time of year. The guide suggested the trail would take 45 minutes but I would allow 90 minutes to fully enjoy the experience.
Starting at Mutiny Bay along side Wicker Man, Lightopia route takes you through Katanga Canyon past Congo River Rapids towards The Runaway Mine Train, before dropping down towards Duel, Gloomy Woods, Haunted Hollow and the Alton Towers Gardens before passing The Dragon outside of Alton Towers Tower Ruins.
We found the route very accessible, better than the 2021 route with Louise using her Mobility Scooter, I would say Lightopia at Alton Towers is very accessible for plus sized and mobility impaired people wanting to attend this Festive event.

(I'm Louise, Andrew's wife) I love Lightopia and really looked forward to it after last year's event at AT.
The concept is brilliant and I love that it encourages people to get out and do something active, something fun, something different and just something that unites groups of different ages and backgrounds. I loved that the route was different and for scooter and wheelchair users, it was far better with the gradients being less steep uphill.
(Mobility and accessibility-wise) I felt very happy to FINALLY see the conservatory, because that route is normally blocked off to the public- and the temporary lift obviously isn't available. The ground towards the conservatory was very fine grit/sand, bumpy and getting boggy in the rain, so I was feeling concerned about getting stuck. But all way fine (yay!). The lift wan't really appropriate for scooters though as it was so short you couldn't drive in and make the 90 degree turn. My scooter is very small and fits into my car boot.Even that had to be put into neutral and slid sideways into the lift. Luckily the rain made for a good lubricant as I slid it onto the lift with one of the workers. It wasn't great for my scooter, wasn't great from a health and safety perspective for the workers and I felt wasn't planned by somebody who really knew disability mobility devices. If only they'd hired me as a consultant; I could have gone round that route and pointed out the problem bits.
(Overall) Loved it and will definitely go back next year!

It was nice to see Alton Towers think about accessibility and utilise a stair lift to allow Scooters and Wheelchairs access the the gardens. I hope the look at putting in some permanent features, either ramps or lift to allow access into the gardens all year round.

It's the 2nd year they've done Lightopia from Alton Towers. They also run similar events in Manchester and London (I think) but It's nice to go to the theme park and get some rides in the dark at the same time.
