Thrifting vs. Estate Sale Shopping | Better Stuff or Better Bargains?

- We're in a place with bountiful opportunity to add to our collections! But which is the best place for us to score great vintage variety and get antiques for bargain prices? Welcome to our experiment, where we scout an estate sale ahead of their discount day, then hit the thrift stores and compare the bargains we find!
Where will we find the most interesting stuff? The estate sale features the remaining collections of an antique dealer, so we're in for some visual treats and interesting buys...an antique Prussian soldier humidor, sweet 1930s silhouettes and a cute 1940s Vallona Starr ceramics set seem buyable, but we have to be careful because prices on so many things here are way up there! Our strategy is to buy a few things now and come back for half-off day tomorrow.
But if the deals aren't great at the estate sale, will the thrift stores make up for it? Goodwill is a good surprise right off the bat, where two values on vintage Italian glass pop up right away, along with a cheap set of cute 1930s scotty coasters and more possibilities. The Arc thrift store boasts that it's the favorite in Spokane, Washington, and their willingness to take on a wide variety leads us to some sewing-related deals. UGM Thrift is my perennial favorite, and a classic Brush cow cookie jar makes my day!
Then it's back to discount day at the estate, where we let the half-off swarm go ahead of us in hopes that we'll get even better deals later in the day. It works! We end up with our favorite prize of the weekend, a terrific Philco radio that plays great at a price we can afford (finally) as the estate sellers 'cry uncle' and give the deals it takes to move a house full in a short timeframe.
In the end, our purchase prices (and expected profits) tip the balance slightly towards the thrift stores, but the estate sale is where we got the most fun stuff that we expect to sell fast. Call this one a draw?

"Plumbing spelled in a most interesting way..." Lol😂
He's so nice...
I’m still learning (aren’t we all?), but I’ve learned that you need to have some knowledge of what things really sell for, so you will know a bargain when you see it! Glad you were able to get the old radio at a good price.
Im in Tampa, havent seen any of the Victorian kitten art around anywhere .. Love it ,,
I was raised in early American antiques. However I always wanted to do more of the vintage hunting. I stayed so busy with the pre 1900 Era never had time.
So I started thanks to George and Zeno !
Yesterday I picked up first piece at a yard sale! Hager square bowl. I love it. Grey and pink glaze! Thank you guys!
The glasses with the image of the woman wearing the crown, that’s RBG Ruth Bader Ginsburg
Right, but the image itself is a knockoff of the famous RAP PAGES magazine cover of “the Notorious B.I.G” aka “Biggie Smalls,” the world-renowned rapper who died in March 1997. It was taken 3 days before his death (gunned down in L.A. in the whole “East Coast vs. West Coast” rap beef). Photographer Barron Claiborne (in NY-Biggie was from Queens) wanted to portray Biggie as a king, thus “decided to immortalize him with a tilted crown nonchalantly placed on his head." Biggie is believed to have gone straight from the photo shoot to the airport to depart for Los Angeles. When people started called Ruth Bader Ginsburg “the Notorious RGB” (because she was such a badass), someone created the crown image as an homage to the famous Biggie cover. You can see the original image if you Google "Biggie in a crown." It has a red background, and he wears a menacing scowl.
I really love how you pace your videos. You do a great job of being positve and informative. As a vintage clothing dealer, I admit I grouse at the term 'rag picker'. But you are so low-key and charming. it's hard to complain.
$15 for a salt and pepper, criminy. Now if they had priced at $9-10 (which is still pricey) the first day they would have sold for more than $7. $15 on the green and cream enamel and it would have sold, instead of going for $10. Lowering the Pyrex by $25-50 would have sold those sets. They easily left a couple grand on the table by pricing high. Simple math people :)) Thank you for taking us shopping
Lol, some people are just really bad at math.
Really enjoyed this comparison of estate sales and thrift stores!!! Was very glad to see you got that radio for a decent price!
I gave up on pro estate sales long ago. Their prices are often more than I charge in my shop. Private estate sales can be the place to get some real bargains.
Whenever you go to Spokane, I get a little home sick.
It's been over 30 years since I lived there yet it still hits me.
Thanks George.
I do like that town a lot! It's really improved a lot too
I love old radios, but is it just me? When you turn them on and warm them up, I’m always shocked to hear a modern radio station. I expect to hear Glenn Miller or the Andrew Sisters! 😊
me too!
Ma and I was talking how the prices in Idaho got up. We used to get items so cheap.
The rooster pitcher was made in Italy and sold by Williams-Sonoma in the 1980's:)
Thanks George... Was in a local consignment store ... The prices were so high that we burst out laughing ... Cheapest item I could find was $65 . . WTH lol
Most estate sales are such a tease and take all the fun out of it for me. As a dealer, I stick to auctions and thrifting. It makes me happy finding a few good items that I can profit from and still pass along value to my customers. I want to score that $50 Pyrex promo piece for $12 and sell it for $39. Everyone wins!
They are a tease, so you have to know which ones to attend and what to look for. A packed house full of possibilities is a lot better than a thrift store full of junk. I don't know how many times I have gone to an estate sale and completely packed my minivan. I definitely cannot say that about going to a thrift store.
So love that you not only know your stuff but that you share.
I learn a lot in every video. ThNks George 😊
I learned to sew on my mother
s singer featherweight. She hunted until she found one for each of the girls. Sadly, we lost them in a house fire years later. Cute and easy to run machine!
I enjoy your shows! I visit this Goodwill when visiting my sister in Spokane. I am from Stockton Ca.
I saw you in Laura's channel. Finally found you. Love your knowledge on so many different things. Your channel is very interesting and always fun to watch.
The Avon President’s Club Award figurines were depictions of Mrs P.F.E Albee, the first Avon lady. It was the “Oscar” of the Avon company.
I missed another premiere😢 great comparison video George. Love that old blanket you picked up. ❤❤❤
Estate sales hands down.
Because I have knowledge and I can always find the $10,000 items priced at $500 that scare others away.
There was a Union Gospel Mission thrift store in Portland oh so many moons ago. The Salvation Army thrifts seem to have disappeared as well. I have purchased so many great things from them in the past. Great vid George! Thanks so much!
Thank you! I think only Spokane has the stores now
I’m still laughing at the interesting plumbing spelling and Jim has a bandage on his head! Hahaha That was a fun video! Look forward to your next video.
Great as usual. I have come upon quite a few estate sales that have high prices too. This was fun
That teapot at Goodwill looked like Arabia Ruska.
I learn so much from you, thank you!! Unfortunately some of the other popular sellers have lost that ability. Love you George!!
Honestly those resellers never had that ability....they just learn as they go like the rest of us it's getting to be quite the thing on RUclips for resellers they all have there own style for getting folks to subscribe some are becoming so desperate they involve family drama pet drama all sorts of stuff like a soap opera lol not for me I'm done with them they just load up with anything and promote their drama more than reselling.
Thank you! It's a challenge to find different things to show, but I love trying. I'm not personally interested in watching drama
Very interesting that you buy for different markets around the country.
New subscriber here. So happy to have found you. I’m learning so much and truly appreciate you sharing your knowledge.
Can never get too much George!!❤
And a free oiler too!
I love traveling along seeing the area, streets etc.
Nice stuff you are seeing there.
Enjoy all your videos and appreciate your knowledge on items. I’m not a re-seller (respect them all) but if I see something I like and really want, I’d rather purchase at estate sale, as long as price is right. Purchasing items on line carry high shipping prices and it is a turn off for me. Good luck on all your future endeavors and thank you for educating us.
As always love shopping along with you and the whole gang!! Lol❤
The Colorado Arc thrift stores are the best!!!
Way better then the estate sale
I love learning new things from you…. Thank you!
That UGM store is a nice one. My mother had that cow cookie jar in the '60s. Goodwill & Arc's prices have to be watched carefully.
There really is a lot to learn. I think we all appreciate your willingness to share so much of what you have mastered !
I have stopped even going in to UGM Thrift Stores. It makes me sad because I love their cause. After seeing vintage glassware labeled as antique for $10 a piece sit for 6 months, among other pricing issues on damaged items, it just isn’t worth my time.
Great cow cookie jar 🐮
Since i moved to the Midwest 3 years ago, estate sales are everything, everywhere, all the time and I’m now hooked on them. I think estate sales have better stuff and still decent prices. GOOD estate sales are priced to leave lots of room for resellers, or for people like me who are trying not to buy anything new, (i make an exception on underwear and mattresses tho). Pennies on the dollar and lots of inventory.
I am in the Midwest, too, and enjoy attending estate sales. I agree with you on requiring mattresses & underwear to be new. I would add brushes & combs to that list.
Twist- brushes and combs can be disinfected though I would only spend on high quality. I’m in the market for one now.
@@christinaapplegate5281 I have to admit, I did buy a very lightly used Revlon One-Step brush hair dryer when I couldn't find a new one in stores! And for $8 vs $59
Great show!!! I am so happy u got the radio!!! Your talk was very interesting, as always!!! 💞💞🙃💞💞
Thank you!
I think the brown matte teapot you picked up at the Goodwill was Arabia (Finnish). Maybe Ruska.
I like going to digger estate sales. Dig for treasures and offer a price. I've found incredible bargains.
Crazy prices at the sale😳ty for the ride along
The glasses with Ruth Bader Ginsburg with a crown on is a reference to the Notorious RBG...a play on the Notorious BIG (Biggie Smalls the rapper, who had a popular/famous picture taken of him with a crown on claiming he was the King of the New York hip hop scene). Hope that helps explain the story.
Love the painted Victorian china. So pretty to look at.
Fun video! The cookie cow cat is ADORABLE. And that Sunn amp was really interesting to see. My last name is my long-former married name, and I was married to someone in the family that made those amps. I bet they’d like to get that and get it working again. Some of the 50s China patterns are really cute!
I loved that cow & cat cookie jar, too. I never knew I needed a cookie jar until I saw that one.
@@twistoffate4791 same! Suddenly I need a cookie jar. I’m so confused. Thanks, George. 😂
Lol my videos are a good influence?
@@TheAntiqueNomad Yes, they sure are, lol.
@@TheAntiqueNomad fer sure, but not if I STOCK the cookie jar. 😅😉
Great video George! Thanks for sharing!
I like how you did the comparatives!
This video is helpful in that it lays out a great strategy for sourcing.
Oh good! I was hoping it would
Enjoyed
Your knowledge is great! I have learned so much! That’s for sharing 😀
Great video George 👍
I think that the thrift stores had the better deals but the estate sale had better items for sale. I also know that if you are crunched for time then most of what you got at the estate sale would have been left and not bought. Thanks for taking me along with you for this experiment. Have a great day
Thanks! So fun to watch! Learning so much about American items! (I'm from Sweden). The brown teapot in Goodwill I would say is from Arabia in Finland, "Mahonki" by Ulla Procopé.
We really enjoy watching your videos!!! Especially when you tell the asking price and what one could sell them for! Keep up the good job❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thanks so much!
Wonderful! Ty, George!❤❤❤
Seems like a great place to visit🥰
That was a pretty nice Goodwill. I’ve found some nifty finds at our local GW. Thank you for sharing your trip and knowledge!
Very informative! Thank. You!
Next time you’re in Spokane may I recommend NoLi brew house. Wonderful location on the river, good food and great ales. ❤
That was fun thanks for taking us along
I enjoy your price comparisons! Thanks for all the detailed info, too.
All Right,🤩Jim Neighbors, Mr. Gommer Pyle!🪖
Think I like milk glass, a nice collection looks nice and goes with everything.
I’ve been waiting for you to do a video in this…great video! ✔️✔️✔️✔️
It’s better quality at estate sales before it gets dumped at thrift store bins. I find many thrift store items are missing their lids and chipped up since no care is taken once the stuff is dropped off at good will or Salvation Army. You just KNOW the items were fine ina persons house for years and end up trashed by being not well wrapped in donation boxes. Such a shame. Whole sets of gorgeous glasses all chipped up ruined by bringing thrown into boxes.
You always have such good information. Thank you!
Valuable lessons here, George
Thank you
Thank you for your research George!❤
Very informative.
I have learnt so much from you...thank you!
love you was honest about the estate sale overpriced most things. The market has really changed.
We have three Union Gospel Mission thrift stores in Yakima. They are quite a bit more than the other thrift stores but you have to consider what they do for the community.
Just wanted to let you know that the 400 mile yard sale is tomorrow June 1_4 in Paducah KY runs to bowling green k,lots of vendors
We had a philco tv back in the day
Now I know why its Burple!
This was great.
Great video as always George❤
So glad to be a new subscriber.
Love your videos, thank you for being so generous with your knowledge
I saw my first Frankoma in person today at a moving sale. I thought it was priced too high for that kind of a sale and the jug had a chip. The glaze was very nice though. I had never heard of Frankoma until you talked about it. Thanks for your videos.
Love all the glass at the goodwill! What a great comparison video! Fun to watch Thanks George
Oh good! I thought this was a different way of looking at things
Great video!💕
Cool stuff
Great video!! Fun watching you go through the thrift store. I like that you advise what is currently selling and what is not so kuch in fashion.
Hi George. Love your videos
I always learn so much, thank you George
very informative video, thank you!
I love your honesty! Drooling over the old sewing machines. But I’ll eventually fix my keeper bought for me from a display model (great deal) interesting viewing today.
Hey George, was that a Supreme Court Justice Ginsburg Tumbler!?😳😂
It was!
What a great video! Thank you for all the work you do
Thank you, great video!!!!
Thank you , George for a fun comparison video.
The Avon Presidents club figures could only be won by high sales goals. So not as common as most Avon.
George I love your videos I really learned a lot every time I watch them especially on the glassware, you would be a hoot to go shopping with!!!!!
The story is -- Supreme Court Judge Much loved lady
