I have issue with Buddhist not being vegan because at the core Buddhism is all about compassion to all being...but always find an excuse to eat meat, and the excuses are outrageous.
Anggutara nikaya 5; 177 the Buddha said about 5 business that is prohibited two of them are trade of living beings (including animals )and meat business. In Theravada Buddhism (the tradition of Buddhism this monk belongs to) this a common excuse so that monks and lay people are able to eat meat. As a Buddhist and vegan it's keeps from studying in that tradition.

I fully agree. In addition to the 3 allowances Buddha also said you shouldn’t participate in 5 business which are weapons/war, poison, alcohol, human trafficking, AND MEAT INDUSTRY. So you shouldn’t go to the store and buy meat. You can also say because you are purchasing meat and know about the meat industry, you are in apprehension of eating an animal harmed for your consumption and generating unwholesome karma. The only time eating meat is ok is when it’s offered to you in like a dinner setting and you don’t want to offend people extending their kindness

The five precepts are the foundation of Buddhism. One of the five precepts is Restrain from Killing. The Buddha said that the precepts are complete and inculcated only if they pass 3 tests. 1. Not Killing by one's own self. 1. Not asking or inspiring someone to kill. 1. Not appreciating if someone kills. 2. Not Stealing by one's own self. 2. Not asking or inspiring someone to steal. 2. Not appreciating if someone steals. 3. No Cheating one's spouse/partner. 3. Not asking or inspiring someone to cheat one's spouse/partner. 3. Not appreciating if someone if someone cheats one's spouse/partner. 4. Not being untruthful. 4. Not asking or inspiring someone to be untruthful. 4. Not appreciating those who are being untruthful. 5. Not taking intoxicants/drugs by one's own self. 5. Not asking or inspiring someone to take intoxicants/drugs. 5. Not appreciating those who take intoxicants/drugs. The Buddha was the first one who started a peaceful movement to abandon slavery and animal slaughter especially cow slaughter in India. And he succeeded to a great extent. In his noble Eightfold path, The fifth of the Eightfold Path; Right livelihood is "Abstaining from any of the forbidden modes of livelihood". Five kinds of livelihood are discouraged : trading in animals for slaughter, dealing in weapons, dealing in slaves, dealing in poison and dealing in intoxicants. Hence, no justification can be given in the favour of any direct or indirect killing. Most of religious Gurus want to please their audience. But the Buddha was not a religious Guru. He was a spiritual leader. After becoming the Buddha, he walked barefoot for 45 years and preached what he practiced and attained. He was rejected and hurt by many religious Gurus of that time. But he kept on doing his noble service to all living beings. I can not give up even my pen. He gave up his three royal personal palaces and all luxuries for a highest cause. Best thing i like about the Buddha is that he never said anything to please people. If something was wrong then he pointed out, he showed the negative consequences of that wrong. He rejected the evils of Caste System, Slavery and Animal Slaughter. Not only that, he also taught the people to develop Insight by Vipassana Meditation. So that people can understand by themselves why they should perform good and abandon the evil. Buddhism has such a vast literature. And one can not interpret the words of the Buddha without developing Insight by Meditation. As you must know that the IQ is not a guarantee of Wisdom. Buddha's teaching is very simple. Sila, Samadhi, Panna. Sila (five precepts) helps to develop the Samadhi (one pointed concentration) and the Samadhi helps to develop the Panna (Wisdom). When you sit with crossed legged, closed eyes, you slowly start experiencing peace within. When you break any precept, you are less likely to feel any calm inside, so you naturally do not want to break any precept by yourself nor you can inspire or appreciate those who break the precept. I quote very famous Indian leader, Economist, Jurist, The father of The Constitution of India, the father like figure for millions of "untouchables" and the Buddhist revivalist Bodhisatva Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. He said, "The Buddha's way is a long way. Perhaps some people may say it is a tedious way. But i have no doubt about it that it is the surest way." Slowly people will understand. I like your content dear David. Keep on doing your service to all living beings.

Excellent video as usual!!!! Congrats David for your great work. This monk pisses me off but you made me laugh. What is this monk do to make a living? talking BS? Great explanation about the insipid "but vegans kill animals for fruits and vegetables"
Not mentioned in the video, but a meat eater consumes up to 20 times more plant life than a vegan (i.e. most grain is not made for human consumption), so if there is concern for insects dying (or small rodents) then all the more reason to go vegan, to cut down as much of than is necessary.
Buddha said to eat whatever is offered to you. The exception is, do not eat an animal that has been killed for your honor. Buddha's concern is the creation of negative karma for the human. Buddha taught the best way to eliminate the suffering of sentient beings is to realize enlightenment, therefore avoiding negative karma is most important. Check into it yourself instead of arguing with me.
Hahaha there are many schools of Buddhism, one of the precepts is not to kill, but they can eat meat if they don’t kill or not hear that the animal is killed for them exclusively. This is common in Theravada Buddhism, specially for the Monks as they have to eat whatever is given to them. Normally Mahayana schools have more vegetarian and vegan variants. Specially Zen Buddhist use to be vegans, as we are bodhisattvas, specially now a days for ethical reasons, compassion and ecology. But in Theravada Buddhism the ethics are not working as we use to think that rational. I understand all of them. But for example in my sangha and temple teachers and members are vegan.
Today's Buddhists are different from ancient ones. Theravāda Buddhism was the root. I am from India, I don't know why some Buddhist countries eat animals?. Completely breaking the rules.
You can't understand his teachings. You have forgotten Jesus, Judaism, and now Buddhist tradition. The non-violent sects are Jainism, Buddhism, Judaism, and Christianity.
As someone who follows Buddhist philosophy, Thich Nhat Hanh is a real Buddhist spiritual teacher, most others are just in it for the money and free food from locals. Follow Thay.
Such mindless bullsh*t. Most “spirituality” is self-centered, hypocritical bullsh*t. I traveled thru that phase, and the day I made a 180 was the day my “spiritual”, “vegan” massage teacher took and ate turkey flesh during our community “thanksgiving” gathering long long ago (I couldn’t believe there was actually a murdered bird on the table), and her justification was that “love transforms it”. Omg...... Yeah, that logic helps you feel better but it doesn’t do a GD thing for that animal.
"Those who do not kill and can control themselves dwell in immortality; They are in a place where there is no calamity. They who do not kill and are compassionate and cautious with their speech and guard their thoughts; they dwell in immortality, they are in a place where there is no calamity. Those who are gracious, who do not interfere, who do not harm sentient beings and who do not annoy them: they deserve heaven. They who are compassionate and pure in accordance with the teachings of the Buddha experience satisfaction and quietude, they transcend birth and death. " -Tripitaka

This is interesting. We have a Buddhist guy who speaks at all of our NARD events and he hosts free meditation retreats for activists. He's also a vegan and an activist. So, why the hell does THIS buddhist guy think killing is somehow justifiable? I'm baffled.
He may call himself a buddhist but that doesn't make him such. It is immediately evident by the quality of his being that he is anything but a holy man.
during the Buddha’s time the sangha did not decide on what they were going to eat. the monks begged as a form of humility and did not discriminate against the food given to them wether it was meat or vegetarian and this is still practiced by the Theravada school in Southeast Asia (with the acceptation of Vietnam which is mostly Mahayana because of Chinese influence) In fact a story in the Pali cannon states once when Buddha’s cousin Devadatta tried to become the right hand man of the Buddha, he imposed several rules to try and persuade Lord Buddha , one of which makes being vegeterian mandatory to the monks to which the Buddha refuses stating that while vegetarian food was preferred, as monks their main purpose was Nirvana Food was only nutrition for the body
Yahya related to me from Malik from Yahya ibn Said that Umar ibn al-Khattab said, "Beware of meat. It has addictiveness like the addictiveness of wine." , Prophet Muhammed Sayings Do not make your stomachs to become graveyards for animals",
I love it when you highlight the hypocrasy and ridiculous arguments with logic. But I love it best when you simply say, "bullshit!". Sums it up beautifully. 💩🤝👏👍
I find a lot of religious people are more interested in feeling righteous than doing the right thing, and use/bend/re-interpret their religion to justify what they already think/do.
Nice catch friend. People need to stop listening to these bourks and get to know ones true self. After enough reflection and self improvement it is a natural progression to turn to plants for nourishment. We all should be eating to live and not so eager to make out of our bodies grave yards.
So horrifying and yet....so unsurprising based upon how hypocritical most "spiritual" leaders are. Bravo for calling out the toxic BS of these "gurus".
Suggestion for video : I recently visited Malaysia and I encountered a group of people out there and they were holding a placard in their hands saying ' Vegans are hypocrites too!!! ' ...So i approached them and told to elaborate and they told about the issue of palm oil and how its causing deforestation and destroying habitats of many species ( indirectly killing them ) .... Soo uhmm I don't know much bout this thing but if u like it than u can do a bit of research and make a video....
I don't know about other countries but in INDIA ...palm oil is like a major component of every vegan food(there are some non vegan foods too but major are vegan foods) for eg: vegan ice cream, chocolate, chips, butter, vegan paints, oreo, nutella, ghee, most of the indian sweets like kaju katli, gulab jamun, etc
But the difference between vegan and non vegan is that we care for animals whereas non vegans don't ..so like we have to not abuse animals in every possible way...eg:by not consuming products that contain palm oil
The message is this- What matters only are your intentions, if you are killing just for the sake of it then it's wrong. But when have an appropriate reason which justifies the killing then it's not wrong, it just a necessity. This is how real world works; this is how nature works. What you can do is to make the process as less painful as possible or else you can grow artificial meat to douse you cravings. Buddhism is science and using science you can cultivate meat. Veganism is a concept that has no base in nature. If you are a living bring, you can't be a Vegan, it's impossible. But if you are robot then it's possible. Though Vegetarianism is a possibility. Buddhism doesn't bars from doing what you like, rather it teaches how to do it without reducing anyone else's capability to do what they like. Middle path is the right path.☸☸☸☸☸☸☸☸☸

@@JossWainwright I don't know about english translations. I have read the Jivaka Sutra and it's Attakatha, which is like a review of that Sutra. From the butcher to the distributor to the seller to the consumer. Whoever involved in anyway unless they don’t know, or haven’t heard, or don’t suspect, what’s going on. For example if you sell a knife to a butcher, and you don’t know he’s a butcher or you haven’t heard he’s a butcher or you don’t suspect he’s a butcher, you are fine. Karma reaches far. It doesn’t have to be just one person that takes all the blame.

Buddha was like the epitome of kindness. But what is this guy saying? Why does he even need to blindly follow what apparently was the practice, if it was such at those times? He is a monk and his practice is nothing but blind belief. He cannot see the clear suffering to sentient beings occurring because of this unnecessary lust for taste and he is acting wise and talking some deep useless shit and he's talking about becoming Arahant. What a joke!!
Actually, Theravada monks will certainly eat meat if it is given to them by the poor, as the karma attached to the butchered animal is not theirs. They may not, however, accept meat that was specifically slaughtered for them, which would never be offered, as this would bring terrible karma onto the offerer. In fact, it would be very bad to refuse such an offering from people who can barely afford to feed themselves.
Like you, once one of the monks (Devadatta) told buddha that monks must stay vegan. Buddha said it's up to you. Because being vegan or not is your thing. It's not related to buddhas teaching. That is the best advice for you

They are not sons or daughters of good family, and nor do they belong to the family of the Buddha. They are not free of attachment to body, life, or pleasure. They are not free of greedy desire for the taste of meat. They are not free of ardent craving. They are not compassionate. They have no desire to relate to all living beings as if they were part of themselves. They do not look upon all living beings with affection, as if each were their only child. They are not bodhisattvas. They are not great beings.
for the algorithm!!
Wow, anything to justify eating animals.Such bs!!
If logic was a hat, this guy would be wearing it on his feet
Dude you are one of the best activists I have encountered. We need more people like you who speaks the truth and what people need to hear, not what people want to hear. Keep up the good work👏
When I watched that video, I was so mad how he badly interpreted Buddhism.
Once again a great video! Keep it up
Thank you for exposing these fools and their nonsense!
Its bizzare the lengths people will go to justify eating dead flesh
@Sharon Spedding
The most ridiculous ideas we have, are generally the ones we have the greatest trouble getting rid of.
yes.
David you should check out the story about young (Buddha) Prince Siddhartha rescuing an injured swan, fighting in court to prevent the swan being killed by his cousin, nursing him back to health and liberating him. Reading that story as a child was my first introduction to animal liberation.
Very well said, thank you!
I have issue with Buddhist not being vegan because at the core Buddhism is all about compassion to all being...but always find an excuse to eat meat, and the excuses are outrageous.
comment from the algorithm 💚✌🏽🌸🌱
The worst atrocities on eating meat 🤦
The first minute and 9 seconds 🤦🤦🤦 He doesn't understand SUPPLY AND DEMAND!
Anggutara nikaya 5; 177 the Buddha said about 5 business that is prohibited two of them are trade of living beings (including animals )and meat business. So buy and sell meat and murdered animals are prohibited but most of buddhist nowadays including monks don’t teach or discuss this sutta as they still
like to eat meat and they don’t want to stop meat donation .
In Theravada Buddhism (the tradition of Buddhism this monk belongs to) this a common excuse so that monks and lay people are able to eat meat. As a Buddhist and vegan it's keeps from studying in that tradition.
This monk has worse logic than a 9 year old
People are crazy, no matter the religion haha. At least we see who is *not* enlightened.
@@GarudaLegends ¬ It's soo crazy to not abuse animals, right? Carnists like you are pathetic with zero arguments.
But hey, thanks for contributing to the algorithm with all your bullshit comments! :D
@@GarudaLegends ¬ Non-vegans eat both plants _and_ animals, on _top_ of the plants that the animals _themselves_ eat, which is most often many times _more_ than what people eat. So if we grant the "crop deaths tho" argument is being argued in good faith (it never is, it's just ignorant virtue signaling from carnists as a pitiful "gotcha" attempt with no critical thinking behind it whatsoever), then that would mean the individual should go vegan. Why? Well if it isn't obvious by now, it's because non-vegans only _compound_ the issue they pretend to care about. But ofc you don't.
@@Corvid_Moon More animals are killed over there, so I don't care about the animals which are killed over here.
@@TheFettuck it's wholely possible no animal died due to rice in the bag I bought. Or the organic greenhouse fruit, or fruits with thick skin which often aren't sprayed. Or produce you grow and harvest yourself.
Meat eaters definitely demand the death of animals.its certain they die.
@@ksitigarbha9787 Ironically most vegans do not support organic/veganic farming and most vegans do also not grow their own crops. It is certain that animals are getting killed by harmful tools (insecticides, pesticides, nets, traps, guns, etc.) which are used on commercial crop farms.
That was so frustrating to watch. I need a lie down
There is no right way to do the wrong thing...
nice job David I really appreciate your work🙏
I'm happy to see your channel growing. Keep up the good work!
This guy is really enforcing the stereotype that vegetations are whiny sissies
Keep doing a great job David! :)

His excuses are as bad as any I've heard. What a tool. And many religious people think that atheists can't have morals....yet this guy, like many other theists, has the morality bar set pretty low.....

Those who can convince you to believe absurdities, are those who can convince you to commit atrocities. - Voltaire (Christopher Hitchens too).
Thank you a lot for this video. You forgot to say when you talked about the insects being killed in the process of producing vegetables that the tortured animals also have to eat vegetables and in more quantity than the rest of humanity to grow up and being killed, so in the process of meat production not only that animal is being killed, also the insects and many many other animals are being killed
Good point!
It's almost as if religion and assumed "spirituality" gives you no special insight into ethical issues at all.. Imagine.
Errrr ... Buddha himself ate meat !
Whatever the Guru's been smoking... I'm glad I've stopped smoking it.
0:55 same reaction lol
I only wish here in the world woud be more sane people like David.
I have subscribed on you with my two accounts. And it’s not a joke , it’s great job you are doing 😍
Much has happened in the decade. Looks like it's time for that down-to-earth followup with said dude.
More and more information comes to light while carnist excuses become less and less potent.
In his noble Eightfold path,
The fifth of the Eightfold Path; Right livelihood is "Abstaining from any of the forbidden modes of livelihood".
But i have no doubt about it that it is the surest way."
Slowly people will understand.
I like your content dear David. Keep on doing your service to all living beings.
The Buddha ate meat... this monk is just explaining the rules Buddha gave to monks... At the time of The Buddha there was no variety of foods and monks had to rely on food that people gave them so they couldn’t get fussy about food. Give this monk a break. He is a great person that might have a different view on you and might even be wrong... that doesn’t make him a fake guru. They probably helped more people in their life and have done more charity/volunteering that every single person on this comment section. Grow up
Is that a resurrected Alister Crowley!? Dude has 4 chins to go along with his 5 steps of killing
@Sampson Simpson
I was trying to pin down who he reminded me of.
Thank you Sampson.
☺️
EXCELLENT again !
Thanks a lot for this video!
Some people talk such crap I don't know whether to offer them a breath mint or a roll of toilet paper.
There are many buddhist monks which eat meat. One told me he is not killing animals but eat them after importing from outside Nepal.
By his logic, Charlie Manson did nothing wrong!

I've honestly heard better arguments from random people on the street that have never thought about veganism in their life. Is this supposed to be a spiritual person/leader? What an absolute joke

This is interesting. We have a Buddhist guy who speaks at all of our NARD events and he hosts free meditation retreats for activists. He's also a vegan and an activist. So, why the hell does THIS buddhist guy think killing is somehow justifiable? I'm baffled.
He is the Texan version of Buddha 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Namstop hurting animals!

NOT Guilty !! 😑🔫
So true
He may call himself a buddhist but that doesn't make him such. It is immediately evident by the quality of his being that he is anything but a holy man.
during the Buddha’s time the sangha did not decide on what they were going to eat. the monks begged as a form of humility and did not discriminate against the food given to them wether it was meat or vegetarian and this is still practiced by the Theravada school in Southeast Asia (with the acceptation of Vietnam which is mostly Mahayana because of Chinese influence) In fact a story in the Pali cannon states once when Buddha’s cousin Devadatta tried to become the right hand man of the Buddha, he imposed several rules to try and persuade Lord Buddha , one of which makes being vegeterian mandatory to the monks to which the Buddha refuses stating that while vegetarian food was preferred, as monks their main purpose was Nirvana Food was only nutrition for the body
woah you really exposed this buddhist monk, i bet he's vegan now because of your video, good job you really did it
I m a Buddhist, I eat meat, its hard to quit but I never think its right to take a life. no excuse is justified. respect for this channel
Also bro... all of our phones and computers come from human suffering and exploitation
He does have the balls to wear that robes and proclaim as Buddhist 😂😂
I find a lot of religious people are more interested in feeling righteous than doing the right thing, and use/bend/re-interpret their religion to justify what they already think/do.
Edit: David just made that same exact point. I should really stop commenting before I finish watching videos... lol
I like how you started to change your clothes and act in some parts to emphasize your point Vegan Gains style
Nice catch friend.
People need to stop listening to these bourks and get to know ones true self. After enough reflection and self improvement it is a natural progression to turn to plants for nourishment.
We all should be eating to live and not so eager to make out of our bodies grave yards.
😂 "bug"man detected. The bugs tho..
What the fuck is this? :(
So horrifying and yet....so unsurprising based upon how hypocritical most "spiritual" leaders are.
@You Tu yup bro u r right..
But the difference between vegan and non vegan is that we care for animals whereas non vegans don't ..so like we have to not abuse animals in every possible way...eg:by not consuming products that contain palm oil
The monk's and prists distroyed every religion in the world
"buddha tho"...
At least this monk understand living veing and sentient being is not the same...🤦
The message is this-
What matters only are your intentions, if you are killing just for the sake of it then it's wrong.

Insects tho! 🤦♂️ I've heard enough.
Insects are animals.
@@TheFettuck Definitely! But eating meat causes way more insects deaths because we need to grow more plants to feed to the animals. Mentioning insects as an excuse for not being vegan is not a valid reason in my opinion. That is what I meant, I hope it makes sense. 🙂
@@alessandrobalocco More animals are killed over there, so I don't care about the animals which are killed over here. That is your excuse to continue with the killing of insects. Vegans make this excuse because they don't want to lose the convenience of commercial crop farming.
@@TheFettuck I respectfully disagree with you. I believe we should cause less harm as possible since not producing harm at all it isn't realistically possible. Veganism aims at reducing it to a minimum and that is what I support.
What is your suggestion to live without killing insects?
@@alessandrobalocco Veganism is pointless when it isn't possible to live without harm. Blaming others also doesn't help to reduce your own harmful actions. Everybody needs to support veganic/vertical farming or grow their own ethical crops when they want to reduce harm.

Yo buddist can eat meat like Thailand I am a buddist and I eat meat.
That "monk" speaks with such arrogance in his tone and demeanor, what a phony.
