The Maverick is for the person who wants a truck, but doesn’t want a truck. The Santa Cruz is for the person who doesn’t want a truck, but wants a truck.
Only Maverick Owners and 1/2 ton truck owners will understand the wisdom of your words. I have a 2017 F150 4x4 crewcab, which I love to drive and use, but hate to park. Lol.
@@steveawesome9538 LOL I'm in the same position. I have a 2016 Ram single cab short bed because I hated the length of the quadcab and didn't need the extra cab space. Still a fat girl in width. And I like an open bed but rarely put that much in it. Some things you DO NOT want sharing cabin space with you! Played the midsize suv game with a Grand Cherokee but missed the open bed and tailgate. If I need more hauling capacity I have a 5x10 trailer sitting next to the 2000 lb Tracker bass boat that gets towed a short distance to the lake a couple times a week. I hope I like the Maverick on the test drive because in a couple years I'll be looking into getting one.
@David Moore Person who wants an open bed and something that can tow a reasonable amount but doesn't want the size and expense of a fullsize or even midsize? MOST truck owners would be more than fine with just a trucklett like the Maverick, Santa Cruz, or Ridgeline.
The Maverick is for the person that wants a truck but cant see paying upwards of 60k now for a 1/2 ton or paying 45k+ for a used truck that's beat to hell and has 100k miles on it.
The Santa Cruz seems more oriented towards a typical CUV buyer that wants some truck like capabilities. The Maverick seems more oriented towards a typical truck buyer that maybe wants something more affordable, economical, and drivable than a full or midsize.
Exactly...the only downfall of the Maverick, is the shorter bed length, but with its 4k towing capabilities, you can always pull a utility trailer if needed to handle the larger stuff.
The Maverick have a longer bed, you can't even have a bicycle in the Hyundai. This guy's price is wrong, the Santa Cruz is over $40 grand. I would not buy a Hyundai when you can get a Nissan or Toyota base in that price range.

I own the Santa Cruz SEL, and I love it. I think it’s a great trim because there IS a volume mechanism: a wheel you flick up or down. I think availability should be considered; where is the maverick!? I can’t find it anywhere. Hyundai was able to deliver, so I got the Santa Cruz.
I ordered a maverick. I test drove one the other day. I thought in pictures the interior looked cheaper too, until I got in it. In all honesty, it is solid and durable. If your going to get outside and do activities, the maverick is a great option for a simple wipe down. I honestly fell in love with the interior after sitting in it and driving it.
I yest drove an XL Ecoboost yesterday. They got 5 Ecos in that day but 4 sold between noon and 4 when I could there. I found it plenty peppy getting on the interstate. The interior IS a budget interior but it is completely adequate. Seats, same deal, totally fine. This is all great. The value is in the utility:price. Can't wait for my Hybrid XLT.......
@@miata350 That is one thing I just don't understand. Things like volume, and heated seats should always be a physical button. I'll at least accept that putting everything on the touch screen done for cost saving. If you have a very low end base model, and you have to save money, I get it. There is no way to compare the Santa Cruz to anything and I've had every vehicle imaginable, from a Bentley Conti GT to a tiny Toyota pickup. Bought a Santa Cruz and cannot explain how well it drives. It's the first vehicle since the Bentley that I just want to drive for the fun of driving it. The Ford will never be that.
I was able to see the Santa Cruz in person, but not the Maverick just yet. The Hyundai looks like a car with a bed, and looks better in person than in pictures. It is definitely sleek in its appearance. More car like. So I will 100% echo the closing statements. The Santa Cruz is more the car of the two. And as a Ford truck owner, I can see that the Maverick it's in fact a mini truck. While they're similar, they're very different.
My wife just got her Maverick this week. Great truck so far. I have 17 Ram and it drives like a truck. The Maverick is a truck but drives so nice its very quick and good on gas.
@@michellemelanson357 TRUCKLETT. Or UTE. That said, to most an open bed will always be a truck and there's nothing wrong with that. What we see here is the Elcamino, Ranchero, and Rampage type "trucks" making a comeback with a gain in cabin space and sacrifice in bed space.
One thing to note about that maverick bed is the second tailgate position that puts it level with the wheel wells so sheet goods go in flat, I really like that feature. And that little cubby you looked at has a false floor that comes out so it's really deep
I test drove the exact same Cyber Orange Maverick shown in the Bourgeois Ford picture in this video & ordered my very own XLT With FX4 & Lux. Package in the Cyber Orange the moment I got back to the dealership. Can’t wait for delivery in a couple weeks!
I like the Ford quite a bit more after looking at each one. Drove a Maverick demo recently & really impressed with the features & quality of the XLT with Luxury Package. I’ll be ordering one … $31K well optioned.
I'd like to see more info on the base engine Santa Cruz...it has a nicer interior imo than the top trim everyone insists on reviewing and still tows 3500 lbs.
Won't see that on this channel. these guys are in Canada, we don't get the non-turbo engine up here. It would be nice to see our base trim, the "Preferred" trim. Cloth seats and the stereo has a volume knob, and wireless Android auto/Apple carplay.
I don't care what nobody says but under the hood the Maverick is frinkin plumbers nightmare Ulgy! Even with the cover off it looks internally neat and clean! I am a Ford Guy but the Maverick look throne together in a hurry! I want to see both on the Beach surf fishing!
Test drove both last week and bought the santa cruz. I daily a 96 f150 with 98k miles. I love ford, truly do. Wanted the maverick at first. The decision was easy, hyundai all day. The santa cruz, felt, drove, rode and performed better then the maverick.
I drove both and reached a very different conclusion. The Ford has better features (drive modes with FX4) and interior setup. Maybe it was the roads around each dealership, but the Maverick drives nicer for me.
@@krasnaludek298 maverixk you can't change the gears manually in any drive mode. Not beneficial to me. Defeats the awd purpose almost. Took the santa cruz down the entire blue ridge parkway this weekend. Seriously tight fastish turns for hours, didn't have one complaint. 23mpg through the mountains. Maverick is better in mpg I will say but it has less power also, less payload capacity, less towing capacity, etc. I really wanted the maverick, still do. But it was very hard to purchase it when hyundai has better features and 100k mile warranty. No ford will ever have that haha.
This channel seems to be biased towards american trucks and prefer the old boxy truck formula. Old people like old designs. The Santa Cruz however is for the young and youthful market that prefers a more stylish design that looks more like an SUV than a truck.
We're thinking of replacing our '09 Kia Rio with a Maverick. We've often said it would be nice to have the functionality of a truck for when we need to haul around smaller items like furniture, that just wouldn't fit in our explorer. Yet we didn't need a truck badly enough to accept living with the inherent flaws most trucks have, like poor fuel economy, uncomfortable ride, bad handling, and massive exterior dimensions. Then the maverick comes along, and all of a sudden, there's a truck that's trucky enough to do the things we need it to do, like haul a couch or an exercise bike. Yet it also gets way better fuel economy than our Rio. The Rio gets about 30 mpgs, maybe a bit more on the highway. But isn't efficient in stop and go environments, which is usually where we're driving. The hybrid is perfect for us. It's almost like Ford read my mind lol.
@Frank Dux I'll be honest, it's probably going to be about a year before we replace the Rio. Hopefully by then, the vehicle shortages won't be as severe. We've looked at the soul, my family hates how it looks. We're also looking at a Veloster, unfortunately, it's becoming more difficult to find a new one, especially a new one in the spec we want. We're also considering a cx-30 or Mazda 3.
@@jacknasty6940 Indeed it is, that was also part of it. From a safety standpoint, it's not exactly confidence inspiring when you're in this tiny little car with almost no modern safety features, and all the vehicles around you tower over you.
@Frank Dux In fact, we've also looked at altama"s, corollas, bronco sports, a Veloster, maybe even another Rio. While we've owned quite a few ford's, our family isn't married to any particular brand. When it comes to replacing our Rio, my family just wants something that's reasonable value, yet not so cheap that it's poorly made/engineered. While also be fuel efficient, safe, reliable, and decent in the snow. While hopefully being more practical than a tiny sedan or hatchback. The maverick seems to excell in all of these areas. I was a little worried about the hybrid system. But doing some research, that hybrid system seems to have legendary durability. It's basically the same hybrid that escape taxi's have been using for over a decade. Many of those taxis have 300, 400, even 500 plus thousands miles with literally no powertrain issues in many cases.
An extra 1000lbs towing capacity is way better to have on hills / mountains / rough roads. Even with a 1000-2000lb trailer, you will feel a huge difference.
When your hit the +$35k price range... I agree with the folks that starts shopping in the ranger or frontier line ups. After taxes and fees your up in the$40s
Just bought a Santa Cruz but waiting for delivery. Great comparison since I was looking at both the Maverick and Santa Cruz. Maverick didn’t have the options I got with the Santa Cruz for the price and couldn’t find a black Maverick in stock in Pennsylvania. So I got the Santa Cruz. I’m happy with my decision. Thanks
Two comments about the differences between the beds of these two trucks: First, Ford's bed is designed to carry 4x8 sheet goods. Their tailgate can be tilted up, so the edge of the tailgate is level with the top of the wheel wells inside the bed. This, along with the two tie-downs on the tailgate, allows sheet goods to be carried safely and securely. Second, Hyundai designed their truck so that the 'C pillars' of the cab intrude into the bed of the truck. If you're carrying bulky, but light, items, the C pillars reduce the available space. For example, say you're helping a college student move all the stuff she thinks she'll need as she goes away to school. You may need to fill the bed with boxes of clothes and other stuff -- stacked as high as the top of the cab. Because of the C pillars encroachment into the space above the bed, you'll be able to carry fewer boxes than you otherwise might. Are these big deal differences? It depends on how the truck will be used. The point is, Ford's bed is more useful as a truck bed than is Hyundai's. Either will carry groceries just fine. But, if that's all you're going to do, why buy a truck?
Another example is mattresses and box springs. You can toss a twin mattress in the bed, but try tossing a full, king, or queen on top of either bed. You can't with the santa fe because of the C Pillars. But you can on the Maverick. Just tie it down, LOL.
The SC tailgate also has a mid position for plywood, etc. I have seen articles that say the SC is limited to 500 lb or so in the box, but this may be incorrect. The SC C pillars may add rigidity to the assembly. The SC uses a dual clutch transmission. I'd worry about pulling 5000 lbs up a boat ramp slowly. The SC, all the swoopy lines don't help with fuel economy. Both don't need max power on the highway, but the SC needs more fuel for highway speeds. Speaking of power, under the hood of the ford, I did see an oil dipstick to indicate that there is a motor under that rat's nest.. I've also seen that the ford has an aluminum hood to save weight, and notice there is no noise abatement pad under the hood. Lots of things to compare, even the price. I don't need a fancy vehicle to impress the neighbours, I need a functional vehicle to impress myself.
Right. If groceries and light hauling are the main objective, it seems that the santa cruz is the better choice.. although oddly, it is still better if towing is desired
@@Kvatch1 I'm not sure I would trust Santa Cruz's tow numbers compared to the Maverick with the tow package. Ford could be understating their rating. Ford knows how to tow, but does Hyundai?
I'd trust the Ford to more consistently and safely tow closer to its limits over the Hyundai. It might have a lower number stamped on it, but the upgrades on the Maverick including the trailer brake controller would allow me to tow with confidence, especially here in PA where you will constantly be pulling uphill and then braking downhill. A couple things on the Hyundai has though that got overlooked in the comparison and might be worth choosing it over the Mav are the integrated roof rails allowing you to use crossbars and baskets for extra storage, and Hyundai's blind spot cameras that replace the dials when you put on the turn signal which has a bonus effect of encouraging people to use signals before changing lanes, something many of my fellow Americans struggle with. All in all I'm glad to see someone finally compare these two side by side instead of comparing them to full size trucks or the Ridgeline and who better than the channel that knows trucks.
No company is faultless. For a while, Ford forgot how to put spark plugs in engines, and have put a water pump inside the timing case, buy a new engine when the pump fails. I've read about 2021 F150s dropping the drive shaft. In the N. American built Hyundais, the bean counters thought it was ok to leave debris inside the engine. Time will tell.
The flat uninterrupted center console is the cool part of it, hard buttons buttons knobs would be great, but better somewhere bellow, I do not even feel the obsession with volume knob and i do play music all the time, but steering volume i use most, if I have to use the steering wheel for steering, then I'm not worried about volume
Very nice video! I really like all the little features and customization points Ford added to the Maverick. Also, the cup holders in all four doors are designed to fit those big insulated tumblers and bottles we all use now. Thank you, Ford.
The Maverick is more truck-like outside as the interior definitely screams cheap on the base models. With the Santa Cruz it looks a little more sophisticated as the interior doesn't make you feel like you're minimum wage class. Now I would pick the Maverick first, but I would love to have that Santa Cruz interior in it.
Why would you compare the base model Maverick to the base model Hyundai Santa Cruz. 20g vs 24g isn't a fair comparison at all. The Hyundai that is closer to the price of the Lariat than the XLT. Who would of thought it has better interior than the base model Maverick lmao wtf.
@@zxZethxz Because no matter how much you spend with the Maverick the interior still don't look as good as a base model Santa Cruz. You can pay $35,000+ for the top of the line Maverick and it still has a cheap looking interior.
@@jamesm568 Exactly. I think the Lariat interior for the Maverick is pretty good, but there isn’t much difference between the base model and the XLT interiors that most people will be getting. Every Santa Cruz is going to have the same impressive looking interior whether you spend $25K on it or $40K on it. Your spending over 30K and likely close to 36K for the Maverick Lariat interior. The Maverick is an impressive vehicle but Hyundai has them beat in that category. The Maverick wins in fuel economy though even if you take the hybrid out of the conversation (which I pretty much do anyway because I could not see myself buying a truck where I live without some semblance of 4WD)
If only the maverick had a cooled seating option.. Personally not much a fan of the front end either.. wish it took more design cues from the ranger. It's a bit too bubbly for my liking
When looking for a small truck, With the Maverick I saw ads everywhere and positive reviews. I never knew of the Santa Cruz and never saw a ad for it. Only learned of it through a online auto sight and here on RUclips. Seeing my Maverick is about 5 months off, I'll check the Cruz out. Though my order is in for the Maverick 2.0 XLT, the dealer kind off hints they would not mind at all if I change my mind and refund my deposit. Then they can sell it with a $2,500+ markup. I doubt I'll change my mind.
Honestly to me, That ford maverick reminds me of an updated Ford Ranger from 2011, and I loved that Ranger, honestly I prefer the Maverick over the Santa Cruz
What would make it perfect?? Im looking to buy one but still undecided. Got a co worker who just got one and he said the only thing he does not like is the automatic shut off on red lights and stop signs. He said you can disengage it but you have to do it every time you manually crank it back up otherwise it will do it automatically for better mpg.
I like the Santa Cruz more for it's exterior and interior. The Maverick is made for working, not as a cruiser. The Maverick is priced to out sell the Santa Cruz. Well done Ford( F150, Bronco, Maverick).
Hyundai is getting destroyed in sales, mostly because it's so sub niched and way to pricey for what it is. I still like the Santa Cruz more but I'm holding out for a better pricing

I’ve got to say I really like the Hyundai a lot better. The styling, extra power, and tech and storage all look superior on the Hyundai.
Great comparison! I'm in the Santa Cruz camp myself, but no matter witch one you like better you have to love the fact that we have choices for smaller pickups. I hope the other manufactures are paying attention. Keep up the great work Truck King!
Two fun real world needs trucks, with different design philosophies. Just glad they are coming out with trucks that can get mid 20s mpg and still do 0-60 in under 7 seconds. Both these trucks are easily beaten off road but they are so much sportier on road and through the twisties. They are the perfect height for loading or just getting in and out of. For what its worth I have seen as high as 33.5 on the highway. This was the vehicle computer, I have not got a full tank of gas yet to do the real mileage. 27.8 is the computer reading for around town. If that ends up being nearly true, it will get over twice as good mileage as the tundra I traded in.
HAHA a gas guzzling Tundra....yep been there done that with my 08 Tundra....Highest I ever managed was 21mpg with it, and that was coming back from Washington into Idaho....must have been all downhill HAHA!!! Been looking at the Maverick and Ranger, but leaning towards the Maverick more for the fuel economy and car/SUV ride quality over the Ranger that's more capable, but not as economical for most of my needs.
Great review. I am biased as far as which is better. I’m a Ford fan. Always have and will buy Ford. Living in Ontario, I really enjoy the Canadian perspective and pricing.
I saw the Hyndai the other day, and had no idea what it was. I really like the look, and the headlights are awesome at might. Looks great. The ford looks good too.
I'm old enough to remember the original Ford Maverick so this just feels weird to me . My high school buddy transplanted a 302 Police Interceptor into his yellow '72 fondly known as Tweety .
Great job guys! Could not have asked for a better, well thought out comparison. I almost bought a Maverick in "Area 51" but decided on a Outback Wilderness Edition instead.
If you line them up together, the lift in height on the SC is higher to accommodate that small in-bed trunk. So, weigh that a little. Easier access in and out.. or some storage.
I was actually leaning towards the Hyundai due to its increased towing and payload earlier this year. But now that they are both out and I have now driven both.... The Maverick is just a better feeling truck. The Hyundai was nice, but it's just squishy feeling when driving and a lot of the interior features felt like an after thought. I do flooring inspections both commercial and residential and I travel all over from Maine to Pennsylvania and have tools and equipment I bring along with me. Either of these would suit my needs just fine, the Maverick just looks and feels better in my opinion. I actually just ordered a black XLT with luxury package, FX4, and 4K towing last week . It'll make a good all purpose work/daily driver vehicle.
@@putmeincoach7663 I'll admit the Hyundai was nice, drove fine, had a lot of spunk for what it is. But it feels more at home in a suburban setting in my opinion. The Maverick is by no means a serious big truck but it feels more utilitarian, more purpose built. Those who need a "real truck" wont like the Maverick or find it very useful. I still have a Ram 3500 for towing my tractor , my camper, or my car trailer. But a big full size truck just isn't economical enough for my line of work where I put on a lot of miles. I was using a 2018 Chevy Malibu and it works fine but it's not AWD and during winter it can be complicated getting in and out of client's driveways. The Maverick solves a lot of the day to day issues I had in the Malibu.
After seeing this video, I'm kind of leaning toward Santa Cruz. I think I just need to test drive each one. Thank you for this video Truck King !!!!!!!!!!!!
I would not wait until spring. It will take at least that long if you order today. With all the companies announcing price increases due to supply chain problems, Ford will probably increase MSRP by then which means dealer markups get even higher.
@@davewilson8308 If it's mostly for road trips, the eco can still be ordered now before any 2023 price increase. The hwy mileage is only 3mpg less for a 250 hp engine.
I thought there a remark that while the Santa Cruz has that payload of 1,400lbs, only 600 of it can actually go to the bed. If that's the case than it's a clear cut winner being the Maverick I feel. I could be wrong on the above, but I could've sworn I heard it a few times before
I think the 600lb rating for the bed is due to the design of the bed and that trunk that's built into the bed that might compromise the bed structure for heavier weights, but I'd think the Maverick could very well be the same....I don't think you'd want to try and put 1300-1400lbs in the bed of either of these, you wouldn't be able to steer it LOL.
You can see the engineering and thought on the Hyundai for sure. The Santa Cruz interior is much more thought out. The Ford engine bay looks like a laundry hamper. The SC tailgate has lights on it and is dampened. The bed has more storage which is a premium. Time was put into the body styling on the SC. The assessment at the end was perfect. Do you want a vehicle that drives like a car and can do more than the Maverick OR a truck that can do less than the SC?
The more I look into the Santa Cruz the more I like it. I live in Vancouver, BC, and both of these are definitely geared toward people who want truck-like vehicles without the big size and bigger price tag. Nice side-by-side comparison :)
except you cant even fit an ATV so you would need to get the hitch package then have to buy a trailer still. You would be better off buying an SUV with a Hitch or a Ridgeline that actually fits a person lying down or an ATV. The bed on the hyundia is for show. The El camino was a car with a bed no one called it a truck thats all this is. You will never see someone hauling anything except a box or anything that would easily fit in an SUV.
I have a reserve on both of these trucks, the Santa Cruz arrives 12/18/2021. The Maverick March, I am so torn between the to, but leaning towards the Maverick.
Funny how people kept saying that Ridgeline is not a truck because it was a unibody, but now the Maverick, which is also a unibody, is somehow a truck.
Do you happen to know what the manufacturer recommended maintenance schedule is for the both of these? For example, every 10,000 miles or every year (which ever comes first)?
In my opinion the Ford maverick looks better. The reason I think that is I like the box and square body design. Also I like that Ford made the maverick for work purposes aswell
About 100 pounds difference in payload capacity, that would go down considerably if Hyundai took the time to actually offer a tow package...subtract the receiver hitch, transmission cooler (part of the tow package on the Maverick), and the added cooling capacity, and...it would be a wash in the payload category between the 2 vehicles...overall they spec out very close to each other, however I'd go with the Maverick...a true 8 speed transmission VS that dual clutch crap that don't belong in daily driver vehicles. I don't need to tow much very often, and neither of these vehicles have the higher towing capacity that I occasionally need which is in the 6-8k range when I need to haul my tractor/implements...however these little crucks certainly will serve many well who need to make that quick trip to the home center but don't want to get the cargo area inside their SUV covered in dirt, bark, mulch, etc.
agreed, I had a 2017 Hyundai Tucson with the duel clutch...NEVER AGAIN!!! Constant problems and a clear safety hazard, when you push the gas, no power while it figures out what gear or when to shift... I bought and have there Maverick, the true 8 speed transmission is the way to go. Please people i am telling you
@@st8tjacked : a question for you. My 2013 Santa fe turbo is the first automatic I've had to buy. Even with 260 hp / ft lbs, it seems the auto is programmed for 100 hp/ 100 ft lbs, as it continually likes to shift when I see no reason for it. Like trying to pick up 5 km/hr on the highway, the torque converter unlocks, it shift some gears, the revs come up, all for 5 k, then it will settle down again. I lock the tranny in 6th, it works fine. So, how do you like the Ford, with only being able to chose reverse or forward?
@@drewthompson7457 ya that problem seems pretty common with the hyundai. Mine always shifted at the wrong time or ran the rpms up then shifted, or lagged then kicked In. I worried as time went on it would wear down and have transmission issues. The Ford so far is great! I'm fine with forward and reverse, smooth shifting and good torque and power off the line, that's what I was looking for though.
Another great video. My takeaways; -Fair and unbiased and I think your summary nails it. -I think your payload comment missed an important point; If you add a hitch package to the Santa Cruz it’s payload would be much lower than the door decal and be the same as the Ford. -The towing comments don’t show or illustrate what the below bumper hitch on the Hyundai does to departure angles, clearance and looks… -You look comfortable and “ fit” in the Maverick where on the Hyundai you don’t, you like you are on it not in it. -The Santa Cruz gage cluster looks out of place, like someone tacked it on after they were done. -Knobs win over lots of small buttons, at least for me. -The bumper step on the Santa Cruz is big deal, especially for shorter or older people, Ford should counter this. -The Hyundai trunk and tonneau cover looks great but where do they put the spare tire?
One can show wear and still be exactly what you got it for. If the other shows wear it looks like has abused. For the difference in price I'd take the advantages of the first one. Your knowing just which one I mean indicates which one makes the most sense.

@@codygifford424 Depends on your need, for sure. To use it as a truck, I prefer the Maverick. But I haul appliances, building materials (including plywood), yard debris, and trash for my projects. I actually don't need the built-in cover on the Santa Fe and don't want to pay for it. Currently I use a $200 cheap vinyl roll cover on my F150 and I love it because it gets abused, but still covers my load or rolls up and doesn't impede my use of the bed for loading up appliances, etc. I feel I could do most of what I need with a Maverick but not the Santa Fe. And I'd be interested in the 40mpg of the hybrid, not to mention the $20k price.
@@jenjeffsher3616 I agree. And I would definitely choose the Maverick over the Santa Cruz any day. To be honest, (in my own personal opinion) the Santa Cruz is just absolutely hideous. It's the ugliest thing to ever be called a truck. I currently drive a 98 Chevy Silverado and use the bed for hauling a lot. One of the best looking trucks in my opinion. However, I would not hesitate to buy a Maverick for when I need to go places and don't necessarily need a larger truck bed. My wife and I like to go hiking in the Smokies and the Maverick has plenty of storage for gear without needing a large bed. Plus, like you said, that price tag is difficult to beat. Of course, I'd still keep my Chevy for when I need to do actual truck stuff.
@@codygifford424 Agreed. I have the supercab F150 (2013) and the 4 real doors of the Maverick would actually be a treat for those kinds of road trips with the wife. Would feel more like a car inside. We've gone on trips in the F150 and used the bed as a trunk, locking the tailgate and using the vinyl cover. That's reasonably secure because nobody knows there's anything in the bed. But only getting a max of 20mpg on road trips would make the Maverick my preferred road trip vehicle. Since I'm not a fan of the big C Pillars on trucks, I think the Santa Fe is pretty hideous. But even more, if I get the Maverick, it's for the hybrid since I'll keep my F150 also (maybe get the F150 Lightening in a few years when they actually make them).
One thing you didn't point out the storage in the bed of the ford Maverick..when you open it up you can open the bottom of the compartment for even more storage
It's interesting that you didn't compare the warranty of these two. Hyundais 5yr bumper to bumper and 100k powertrain warranty blows away Fords 12/36 warranty
Did Hyundai not learn anything from Honda? The lack of knobs is such a small thing but a real deal killer for me. Bonus points when the UI inevitably freezes and you can't adjust or mute the volume until you reboot your car.
One of these companies has been making trucks for about 100 years, The other one, not so much. I might be slightly biased as I have owned F-150's, Broncos, Rangers, etc, but I trust the company that knows what they are doing. Hyundai made a valiant effort with the Santa Cruz, but it is lacking a few key features that most truck buyers look for. Integrated Brake Controller-trailer connection, upgraded engine/trans coolers, etc... Not to mention the cost comparison. The 2022 Maverick I built was an XLT model with AWD, 4k tow package, FX4 package, Lariat Lux package was almost 8k cheaper than a similar Santa Cruz.
Lol.
car-ly truck & truck-y car 😁
@@wildbill23c the Maverick bed is 2.3 inches longer than the Santa Cruz.
The Maverick have a longer bed, you can't even have a bicycle in the Hyundai. This guy's price is wrong, the Santa Cruz is over $40 grand. I would not buy a Hyundai when you can get a Nissan or Toyota base in that price range.

Ford maverick cause I actually got mine on pre order
Leave it to dad to keep it simple. The one that looks like a car drives like one; the one that looks like a truck drives like one.😄. Love it.
Haha, I love it!
Truck Dad speaks wisdom!
Maverick is unibody, has Escape engine, reviewers
continue to say it drives like a car....not a truck.

Definitely. Faster and safer since you don't need to look directly at it to do things unlike a touchscreen...
@@miata350 That is one thing I just don't understand. Things like volume, and heated seats should always be a physical button. I'll at least accept that putting everything on the touch screen done for cost saving. If you have a very low end base model, and you have to save money, I get it. But a higher end trim should not remove buttons. Cars that cost 40k should have physical buttons.

Finally, someone compares apples to apples spec'd trucks.. nice job...
The Santa Cruz handles like a Miata with automatic trans. I love it...
I personally like the traditional styling of the Maverick!
Some think it’s ugly so low to the ground It’s not a truck. It’s a car with a truck
Bed.
@@bettybeeson165 : low to the ground improves fuel economy and handling. But then, I prefer to stay on roads.
Did u mention the Maverick can be bought around 20000 in the USA? I know it’s not an f-150 but wow! And trade in values are huge now
My wife just got her Maverick this week. Great truck so far. I have 17 Ram and it drives like a truck. The Maverick is a truck but drives so nice its very quick and good on gas.
its not a truck ,no frame its not a truck.
The Santa Cruz looks much better outside (way more modern look). The Maverick is more traditional, (user friendly) in it's interior.
I think it looks better on the inside, because then you forget how the outside looks
Just got my ford maverick. I ordered it early august and it meets beyond my expectation. This thing maybe little but it has power. I love it so far.
Is yours Turbo or Hybrid?
looking at pics of the base model 22 Santa Cruz it has a smaller screen and I think real turn knobs
Dad nails it again.
One thing to note about that maverick bed is the second tailgate position that puts it level with the wheel wells so sheet goods go in flat, I really like that feature. And that little cubby you looked at has a false floor that comes out so it's really deep
The Santa Cruz does that as tell.
All trucks do this.

I like the Ford quite a bit more after looking at each one. Drove a Maverick demo recently & really impressed with the features & quality of the XLT with Luxury Package. I’ll be ordering one … $31K well optioned.
finally a proper comparision, vehicles of same size.not like the ones you did before example half ton to santa cruz etc.
The Cruz is a blast to drive. Handles like a sports car. like the 10 year 100000 mile warranty...
👏🏼👍🏼👏🏼👍🏼

I have the ford maverick, its simple on the inside, yes, however simple doesn't break, its affordable and will have great longevity over the years
We're thinking of replacing our '09 Kia Rio with a Maverick.
😂 the rio is puny
@@jacknasty6940 Like what’s between you legs?
Good thing dad's around to make short work of the comparison. Great job men.
Thanks 👍
Thanks
You still like your Santa Cruz???
Have you seen the compact ram sold in Mexico?
Haha ahhh the breakdown at the end was the best.
"why buy a truck" To be fair Hyundai stated that its not a truck.
I like that you started whispering when you were showing the plug-in for lights.
Like the Maverick's looks and interior , the 2 tone interior looks real nice 👌🏽
Brake controller is $50 wouldnt suffer the ford interior vs the hyundai over $50
I like that Maverick. Seems like a cool utilitarian little truck for the city. I'm guessing it will be more stout in the long run as well.
@@drewthompson7457 Most definitely. There both neat little vehicles.
I absolutely love the desert sand color on that truck
Yes but not with the blue interior.
I'm looking forward to the hybrid Maverick review, the gardener special.
I got the Maverick XLT FX4 all terrain. Its a beauty. Thanks Jubilee Ford Saskatoon!
Very nice video!
I really like all the little features and customization points Ford added to the Maverick.
Also, the cup holders in all four doors are designed to fit those big insulated tumblers and bottles we all use now. Thank you, Ford.
I'd prefer a 2-seat cab and a longer bed on each of them. When I'm working, I don't have 3 people with me.
The Maverick is more truck-like outside as the interior definitely screams cheap on the base models. With the Santa Cruz it looks a little more sophisticated as the interior doesn't make you feel like you're minimum wage class. Now I would pick the Maverick first, but I would love to have that Santa Cruz interior in it.
with a $4,000 higher base msrp on the hyundai, i surely hope the interior would be nicer
Ford Maverick, love it.
I have 700 miles on my Maverick. It’s good but not perfect. Overall I’m happy with the purchase
The Maverick comes out on top for me.
Great job TK. Straight forward unbiased review. Thank you.

And yet they created the abominable 4-door "mustang" ... Mr Iacocca must be spinning in his grave.
I like the Maverick you can really make it your own 🤔
They are both good for the segment.
Great job guys! Could not have asked for a better, well thought out comparison. I almost bought a Maverick in "Area 51" but decided on a Outback Wilderness Edition instead.
I prefer the styling of the Maverick over the Santa Cruz, both inside and out. If the Maverick had an in-bed trunk it would be just about perfect.
@@TheFlooringInspector82 You made the right decision. The Maverick is selling 3-1 over the Santa Cruz for the very reasons you mentioned.
I believe you can actually get a scroll wheel for the radio tune and volume in the preferred trim.

Ordering a hybrid maverick next spring.
I would not wait until spring. It will take at least that long if you order today. With all the companies announcing price increases due to supply chain problems, Ford will probably increase MSRP by then which means dealer markups get even higher.
Sold out soon bud. Wait til 2023.
@@JamesD-HB good advice guys but I don’t think you can order a hybrid until January.
@@davewilson8308 If it's mostly for road trips, the eco can still be ordered now before any 2023 price increase. The hwy mileage is only 3mpg less for a 250 hp engine.
The 2022 hybrids are sold out for the rest of the model year.
The warranty is so much better on the Hyundai than the Ford. After 3 years with the Ford, you're screwed.
The cargo should never exceed 661 Ibs.
or 300 kg. That is what it says in the owners manual.
Great breakdown of both vehicles guys. I enjoy watching your videos
Thanks 👍
I'd take the maverick on looks. If there is a volume control on steering wheel I don't need a physical knob. Can't remeber the last time I used it.
I have a volume control on my steering wheel and I never use it.
I like ford maverick better look’s more trucky more muscle everything looks greater 🤙🏻🤙🏻🤙🏻
Styling on the maverick will age well. The santa cruz will not. Both are great for most people.
If you consider bland and boring of the Maverick aging well, I agree.
You are right, it looks like a 1980's truck. Pre-aged...
Totally hate the lack of knobs and a blind tactile control. No knobs means you have to take your eyes off the road longer. Not good ever.
only the Limited trims has no knobs...SE and SEL has knobs especially the volume 👍🏼
The tailgate tiedowns on the maverick also double as bottle openers
I like the looks of the Santa Cruz better. It reminds me of an Australian Ute or a four door Ranchero or el Camino.
Great review as usual ! I prefer the Ford over the Hyundai because Ford has been making trucks for years .
King crew doing his thing❤️, great comparisons.
Funny how people kept saying that Ridgeline is not a truck because it was a unibody, but now the Maverick, which is also a unibody, is somehow a truck.
I think most people know its not a standard truck.
Do you happen to know what the manufacturer recommended maintenance schedule is for the both of these? For example, every 10,000 miles or every year (which ever comes first)?
Amazing video for those of us who want a truck but don't want a truck. Thanks so much!
Glad you liked it!
@@st8tjacked : so, just to be clear, the Ford doesn't keep hunting for gears continually?
Thanks for your time.
No not at all in my opinion, smooth shifting through all gears in my opinion
Another great video.
My takeaways;
-Fair and unbiased and I think your summary nails it.
-I think your payload comment missed an important point; If you add a hitch package to the Santa Cruz it’s payload would be much lower than the door decal and be the same as the Ford.
-The towing comments don’t show or illustrate what the below bumper hitch on the Hyundai does to departure angles, clearance and looks…
-You look comfortable and “ fit” in the Maverick where on the Hyundai you don’t, you like you are on it not in it.
-The Santa Cruz gage cluster looks out of place, like someone tacked it on after they were done.
-Knobs win over lots of small buttons, at least for me.
-The bumper step on the Santa Cruz is big deal, especially for shorter or older people, Ford should counter this.
-The Hyundai trunk and tonneau cover looks great but where do they put the spare tire?
this channel has the best name.
One can show wear and still be exactly what you got it for. If the other shows wear it looks like has abused. For the difference in price I'd take the advantages of the first one. Your knowing just which one I mean indicates which one makes the most sense.
Maverick is the winner
Looks like a truck
Hauls like an F150
1,500lb payload
It is a truck
Santa Cruz is pretty
Beautiful crassover
Well made I’m sure
Maverick looks the part!
And at
The Maverick's bed tie downs aren't just tie downs, they're also bottle openers.
Yeah, but the Santa Cruz has an ice chest built in! LOL
@@dchristiansen1 That is definitely a cool feature to have. Actually a better feature than bottle openers, honestly.
GREAT VIDEO......BUT......STILL UNABLE TO REALLY DECIDE. The only resl deciding would be to test drive and comfort during long drives
Good vid 👍
SC has volume knob on lower trim.
Cheers
It's interesting that you didn't compare the warranty of these two. Hyundais 5yr bumper to bumper and 100k powertrain warranty blows away Fords 12/36 warranty
Did Hyundai not learn anything from Honda? The lack of knobs is such a small thing but a real deal killer for me. Bonus points when the UI inevitably freezes and you can't adjust or mute the volume until you reboot your car.
i have a SEL trim and it has a scroll volume...only the Limited (top of the line) doesnt have it...
He didn’t mention pricing. Which one costs more? Hello
