Some of the highest quality production I’ve ever seen (seriously, these videos feel like a journey), plus your composition ability is phenomenal, and watching you work on guitars with such laser-focus is never anything less than inspiring. Makes me want to put my Bass VI on the workbench too.
As a viewer, I was worn down by the rapid-fire succession of statements erupting from her mouth, seemingly non-stop. The only breathing room in this entire video is when she lets someone else speak. It's entirely overwhelming. I don't think I could watch more than one of her videos per month. Don't get me wrong, it's all good information, but the blastbeat jump edits and the run-on statements are just too much.
YES! I live the idea of a bass vi being a singer songwriter instrument. I purchased one last year and I’m a big fan. This was the inspiration I needed to do more writing with this awesomely unique approach to guitar.
This was AWESOME on many levels. I’ve had my CIJ Bass IV since 1996 and it was so inspiring for me to finish an album I was working on at the time. The only mod, besides basic setup/neck shim, was that I wax-potted the microphonic pickups. Every mod you did was really a nice improvement. The fact that you asked yourself what you wanted first was so smart!! A lot of people just change things to change things. You and Mike are just awesome. Thank you!!!
I have a Squier Bass VI that was a COVID purchase. I'm tossing around tweaking it a bit to make it more playable, short of replacing the pickups, and these mods and upgrades really provide food for thought..
I have been on a kick of finding awesome emerging channels, yours being one, I was legitimately excited to watch this video when I saw it was posted. Keep up the great work/modding 🦇🦇🦇
Great input :) I'm part way through a full build on Warmoth's version of the bass VI. Since I ordered the body to be built ( rather than a showcase body) I got to make some of my favorite changes. One piece Mahogany body. No bridge or trem routes. A universal (bathtub) pickup cavity. I bought a neck from the showcase which had a Maple board. The warmoth neck comes with their Warhead headstock which is fender-esc but with a smaller top end. To that I added hipshot open gear lockers. Since I use a bass VI as an octave guitar, I went with 2 Seymour duncan strat stack plus pickups ( neck & middle ) with a '59 trembucker in the bridge. To top it all off I'm using a Khaler flat mount tremolo that I got the help of Gary Khaler himself to set up specifically for the needs of a bass VI. Due to the Khaler being a cam type trem with a stationary bridge, I can mute with my palm. I hope someday you have the time and the budget to do a full build. Would love to see what you create. 🥰
What a nice video! Very cool playing and songwriting. I was between a VM Bass VI and that Antigua Baritone VM Jazzmaster. Got a Bass VI, and put a set of baritone Kalium Strings (.015 - .067) and tune it to Bb. It´s by far my favorite instrument to play and a perfect mix of the two models. Mine has a Staytrem Bass VI bridge, which I´m thinking of swapping for a Mastery set, just like you did. Let´s see, as they´re quiet an investment.

Nice video about modding your “ Penelope Bass” , well done, sounds great too! Just one tip, “Penelope’s “ body is made of poplar, a soft wood, so it might be wise to drop a small coin, or metal plate in the hole for the mute plunger, since the plunger spring will dig slowly into the wood otherwise. I have seen a CV bass VI where the spring actually started to come out at the back of the guitar ..,
I'll be honest I was ...not skeptical, but curious, how a Bass VI as primary singer/songwriter tool would work (which in hindsight, given how inspiring my Baritone is, is a bit foolish). That track assuaged any of that. Sounds massive. Love how it works with your style.

I ended up missing my Squire Bass VI. I added two Pure Vintage 65 pickups, and a Chris Novak pickup at the bridge. I added a staytrem bass vi bridge and tremolo. Finally, I added labella flatwounds. It sounds amazing.
Came for the Bass VI mods, stayed for that INSANE demo. Have watched this 10+ times and it keeps getting better. I have similar complaints with my bass VI even though it’s my favorite instrument in concept, the execution is lackluster. Hoping doing these mods transforms it. Love your content, definitely earned this subscription!

It's nice to see there are people who actually write on these things, I find it so weird how many people buy them just to not use it wondering what to do with it. This has also reminded me that I need to pull the trem unit on mine apart to find out how the entire collet has come loose....
I love watching this! Gives me inspiration on how to mod and use my Bass VI. I tend to play it in a way Robert Smith would use it but seeing your approach helps me get new ideas!
Great vid. The only difference I would have done is series mod, plus an extra strangle. By adding four 3 way switches (ON-OFF-ON). The pickups wired such that when down you get series with B-M series, M-N series, or M-BN(B-N in parallel - then in series with the middle). The Strangle is would be top normal, middle double bass cut (for when series is too dark), bottom off. The series mod is based on the jaguar series mod. The strangle is my own design, using two capacitors of the same value in parallel. They when together cut the values in half (less bass cut - normal, when in off more bass cut). Most 3 way slide switches are 5 mm in height (not 9/ 9.5 mm) so that's an added benefit. The cost of 10 switches is under $10 AUD (
All I’ve been playing is Bass VI the past two years. Guitars, then baritones, wasn’t until Bass VI, I felt at home. Have Fender Pawnshop Bass VI, a Harley Benton and a Squire body with ECG aluminum neck and Lollar pickups. Staytrem bridges on Squire aluminum and Fender Pawnshop. I use it to play bass and also some mathy stuff and chord work.

Penelope sounds great! Love those little whammy bends you play right at the end of that riff :D The VI is so much fun, it is definitely its own beast and a perfect songwriting axe. Just recently redid the cavity shielding on my VM. I play mine with flatwounds. It loves dimension-style chorus when clean and I also use it to play Ko Melina's fuzz parts form Dirtbombs songs, it's such a blast. Can't wait for part II !

Love what you’re doing. You’re definitely on the right path. Please make things easier on yourself - get a socket wrench with 1/2”, 11mm, and 10mm sockets for pot nuts and a stepped bit for enlarging holes.
Now I feel like modding one of my AX7521 (I have a few, they're cheap and awesome). Cut the nut so the top three strings can be light bass strings and swap out saddles if need be (singles are replaceable). I've already thought about trying a top mount trem system but options are limited for a 7 string. Yes. I've been shopping for a 7 string bass so I can learn a certain body of work and this might actually be something I can use until I either decide if I want to keep doing it and/or find one I want and can actually acquire. Thanks for the inspiration.
Absolutely loved the track too. Really, really cool stuff. I have a CV Bass VI, and I just added a Staytrem bridge and a Herad hard tail plate. Snapped my low E string like a dumbass during install though (don't do guitar mods at 2AM), so now I'm waiting for a replacement from Stringjoy. Can't wait to give it a spin when it's done.
A friend who has amazing ability to purchase amazing guitars just gave me a VI and bass amp, I have played around a little on it and like you, I know it can do more. Thanks for showing the concept of what to do - Unlike you I do not work on my own rigs so I will have to find a tech that has your skill.
Great work, I opened a Squier JM once because one of the pick ups wasn’t working, I looked inside and closed it back what a complicated wiring, on another note you might want to look at that shielding paint inside, it doesn’t look right. Love the song!!
I've a lot of YT videos where pots get changed and I have always wondered why the pot manufactures don't put a ground lug on the back. Everyone has to ground it with a big dollop of solder directly on the back plate of the pot.

Thanks for doing the Bass VI mod. I bought a Squier Classic Vibe but sold it soon after because I was finding the intonation issue hard to handle with the stock setup. In theory it’s the ultimate hybrid but it does need some work.

Excellent! I was researching Bass VI fixes/mods, and yours is the best video. A couple questions: 1. Do you know about the difference between the Novak pickups vs the Lollar vi pickups? I haven’t seen anyone compare those yet. 2. Any idea if the newly released Fender Vintera II Bass VI fixes many of the squire issues? Intonation, bristle rattling, needing a neck shin, etc? And pickup quality. Im wondering if that would work out of the box, or only require 1 or 2 mods, such as adding the mute. Thanks!
Thank you so much! So I had the chance to try out both the lollars and the Novaks and to my ears, I found the lollars to have more bass response as well as the typical high end sparkle you get with lollars, while the Novaks have a lot more of a low midrange emphasis and definition and are overall a little darker. For the vintera ii, I have yet to try one out myself so I can’t speak to first hand experience. That being said, from looking at the specs, I’d assume it will still need a shim since there’s nothing saying it has an angled neck pocket, and I assume the intonation should be better since it comes with the correct 1 inch bridge. If I get to try one out at a local shop I’ll post an update! Hope this helps!

I’m deciding between this and the Gretsch “baritone” with Bigsby. I looks like the Gretsch is a bit more ready onto of the box, and can take VI strings (as was originally intended). Thanks again!
OMG what a lot of money to have spent on the guitar. I have owned 2 Bass VIs: a 1965 (with the hideous rubber mute - why would anyone use one?!) and then a 1996 Japanese reissue, sounding the same to my ears. Both had that floating 'tremolo' system which feels horrible compared to a Strat one, and a bridge that allows the strings to slip off if used even moderately hard. My latter guitar was a sunburst model but came with a red scratchplate!!! (I sourced a tortoiseshell one from the States). I also have an early reissue Danelectro 6 string bass (with wooden bridge, which surprisingly works fine) and I have to say the sound is far superior to the Fenders, and the playability of the neck is great - amazing access to the upper reaches. So my recommendation would have been to simply get a Danelectro and stick with roundwound strings (but forget having a 'tremolo' arm).
This video convinced me to grab one, a white VM just like Penelope, used off reverb w a gig bag & labella’s all for about $580 after tax & shipping, getting her in a couple days & can’t wait!

I have heard this...mod of the bass vi...a lot of people replace the pickups that come with it due the unresponsiveness of the stock pickups...which I also experienced playing a bass vi...and the tuning of the bass vi is also a problem stock out of the box new...which is why I would think most people don't get one or use one...as the stardard setup...dull pickups, tuning problems and not versatile...

You did great work, I never new about these until today. I am normaly a 6 string guitar picker, but I have 2 basses. An LTD and a Custom Lemmy Bass. Both 4 strings. But this could open a new world for me. Now to look around for a left handed one.
Hello! I discovered your channel while researching the Bass VI. Looking to expand my playing/recording , I just received the Squier Cabronita baritone guitar demo model I bought, and came to the conclusion it wasn’t for me, as I didn’t really like the sound and the mental gymnastics it required to play in a different tuning. So on to the Bass VI… I really enjoyed your video, and watching the mods you did. I always buy cheap guitars, because I am a cheapskate, but always immediately change the tuners at a minimum. Your video may have given me the “courage” to attempt changing pickups for the first time. Thanks for a great video, and a great channel.
Modding isn't really my thing, but that song at the end definitely was! I'd love to see a vid where you focus on the songwriting part, as someone who struggles with using a bass as my main songwriting tool.
I have the Harley Benton Bass VI copy and so far the only mod I've done to it it adding a hot rails humbucker in the bridge. Their pickups are strat style with a 5-way selector. Maybe later I'll make it an HH instrument 😊
Pickup claws are in different directions 😂 .... Mine do too. Actually my VM was good to go straight out of the box after new strings. Bridge works better than my MIJ offsets.

That’d be so cool!! I’ve never seen one in purple! I was actually playing with idea of getting a shell pink one at first, but I ended up finding Penelope at a local shop and knew I had to pick her up!

Interesting that you didn't replace the tuners, or did I miss that? I've heard that tuning/intonation is the main issue to conquer, which the vibrato bar replacement would certainly help with the stiffer spring. It's a lot to process, the expense of the parts and labor just to make it legit.

Not afraid to try something new, to dream the impossible dream (Well, maybe Man of LaMancha is a little over the top.) And your guitar skills and music are also amazing. Keep going.
Nice job! The only mod I've done on mine is replace the bridge - I want to do many of the other mods that you've done but mine has a bad neck (cannot keep it straight no matter how often I adjust the truss rod!), so I feel like I'd be wasting time and money on it. Really need to just buy a new one - or at least buy a new neck.
I envy your skills, but on the other hand, I simply bought a MIJ Fender Bass VI limited edition in 2013. It even has the accurate bridge that not just the Squier for 300,-, but the US Custom Shop for > 3.000,- didn’t have😎 But I might prefer to have your skills and a Squier❤ At least I can play bass. I have a Bass VI, because I love melodies more than guitars.

Absolutely loved the track too. Really, really cool stuff. I have a CV Bass VI, and I just added a Staytrem bridge and a Herad hard tail plate. Snapped my low E string like a dumbass during install though (don't do guitar mods at 2AM), so now I'm waiting for a replacement from Stringjoy. Can't wait to give it a spin when it's done.

A friend who has amazing ability to purchase amazing guitars just gave me a VI and bass amp, I have played around a little on it and like you, I know it can do more. Thanks for showing the concept of what to do - Unlike you I do not work on my own rigs so I will have to find a tech that has your skill.
Great work, I opened a Squier JM once because one of the pick ups wasn’t working, I looked inside and closed it back what a complicated wiring, on another note you might want to look at that shielding paint inside, it doesn’t look right.

I've a lot of YT videos where pots get changed and I have always wondered why the pot manufactures don't put a ground lug on the back. Everyone has to ground it with a big dollop of solder directly on the back plate of the pot.

Thanks for doing the Bass VI mod. I bought a Squier Classic Vibe but sold it soon after because I was finding the intonation issue hard to handle with the stock setup. In theory it’s the ultimate hybrid but it does need some work.

Excellent! I was researching Bass VI fixes/mods, and yours is the best video. A couple questions:
1. Do you know about the difference between the Novak pickups vs the Lollar vi pickups? I haven’t seen anyone compare those yet.
2. Any idea if the newly released Fender Vintera II Bass VI fixes many of the squire issues? Intonation, bristle rattling, needing a neck shin, etc? And pickup quality. Im wondering if that would work out of the box, or only require 1 or 2 mods, such as adding the mute.

Thank you so much! So I had the chance to try out both the lollars and the Novaks and to my ears, I found the lollars to have more bass response as well as the typical high end sparkle you get with lollars, while the Novaks have a lot more of a low midrange emphasis and definition and are overall a little darker.
For the vintera ii, I have yet to try one out myself so I can’t speak to first hand experience. That being said, from looking at the specs, I’d assume it will still need a shim since there’s nothing saying it has an angled neck pocket, and I assume the intonation should be better since it comes with the correct 1 inch bridge. If I get to try one out at a local shop I’ll post an update!

I’m deciding between this and the Gretsch “baritone” with Bigsby. I looks like the Gretsch is a bit more ready onto of the box, and can take VI strings (as was originally intended).

OMG what a lot of money to have spent on the guitar.
I have owned 2 Bass VIs: a 1965 (with the hideous rubber mute - why would anyone use one?!) and then a 1996 Japanese reissue, sounding the same to my ears. Both had that floating 'tremolo' system which feels horrible compared to a Strat one, and a bridge that allows the strings to slip off if used even moderately hard. My latter guitar was a sunburst model but came with a red scratchplate!!! (I sourced a tortoiseshell one from the States). I also have an early reissue Danelectro 6 string bass (with wooden bridge, which surprisingly works fine) and I have to say the sound is far superior to the Fenders, and the playability of the neck is great - amazing access to the upper reaches. So my recommendation would have been to simply get a Danelectro and stick with roundwound strings (but forget having a 'tremolo' arm).
This video convinced me to grab one, a white VM just like Penelope, used off reverb w a gig bag & labella’s all for about $580 after tax & shipping, getting her in a couple days & can’t wait!

I have heard this...mod of the bass vi...a lot of people replace the pickups that come with it due the unresponsiveness of the stock pickups...which I also experienced playing a bass vi...and the tuning of the bass vi is also a problem stock out of the box new...which is why I would think most people don't get one or use one...as the stardard setup...dull pickups, tuning problems and not versatile...

I put seymour duncan hotrails in a danelectro baritone 29.75" scale w a coil split pish/pull tone pot and a direct to jack push/pull volume pot.
You did great work, I never new about these until today. I am normaly a 6 string guitar picker, but I have 2 basses. An LTD and a Custom Lemmy Bass. Both 4 strings. But this could open a new world for me. Now to look around for a left handed one.

Hello! I discovered your channel while researching the Bass VI. Looking to expand my playing/recording , I just received the Squier Cabronita baritone guitar demo model I bought, and came to the conclusion it wasn’t for me, as I didn’t really like the sound and the mental gymnastics it required to play in a different tuning. So on to the Bass VI… I really enjoyed your video, and watching the mods you did. I always buy cheap guitars, because I am a cheapskate, but always immediately change the tuners at a minimum. Your video may have given me the “courage” to attempt changing pickups for the first time. Thanks for a great video, and a great channel.
Modding isn't really my thing, but that song at the end definitely was! I'd love to see a vid where you focus on the songwriting part, as someone who struggles with using a bass as my main songwriting tool.

I have the Harley Benton Bass VI copy and so far the only mod I've done to it it adding a hot rails humbucker in the bridge. Their pickups are strat style with a 5-way selector. Maybe later I'll make it an HH instrument 😊

Pickup claws are in different directions 😂 .... Mine do too. Actually my VM was good to go straight out of the box after new strings. Bridge works better than my MIJ offsets.

That’d be so cool!! I’ve never seen one in purple! I was actually playing with idea of getting a shell pink one at first, but I ended up finding Penelope at a local shop and knew I had to pick her up!
@@nisebelle The purple is a Chicago Music Exchange (US) and Anderton's (UK) exclusive, and they also have the shell pink ones. Totally get finding the right one at a local shop, though! Love my local shops.
Interesting that you didn't replace the tuners, or did I miss that? I've heard that tuning/intonation is the main issue to conquer, which the vibrato bar replacement would certainly help with the stiffer spring. It's a lot to process, the expense of the parts and labor just to make it legit.

Nice job! The only mod I've done on mine is replace the bridge - I want to do many of the other mods that you've done but mine has a bad neck (cannot keep it straight no matter how often I adjust the truss rod!), so I feel like I'd be wasting time and money on it. Really need to just buy a new one - or at least buy a new neck.
I envy your skills, but on the other hand, I simply bought a MIJ Fender Bass VI limited edition in 2013. It even has the accurate bridge that not just the Squier for 300,-, but the US Custom Shop for > 3.000,- didn’t have😎 But I might prefer to have your skills and a Squier❤ At least I can play bass. I have a Bass VI, because I love melodies more than guitars.
