    The staff at the last place to just be able to hear you & say "try the Nobles" that's what you want in a guitar store. People who can just hear you & know what'll work. And that they saved you money after you decided to purchase...those are good people.

    Hey, this is so cool! It's awesome to see that the guitar shops in Seattle are still going strong. The Trading Musician has so many great memories. I even had a homeless guy warn me not to get ripped off by them once, back when homelessness wasn't such a big topic. They've always treated me well. But it's a shame that we've lost so many great shops in the south end. Don's Green River Music was epic, and A# was always fun, but they're both gone now. Thanks for taking us along on this adventure.

    Pretty solid pick, sounds a bit like a Marshal Gov'ner pedal from 90s.
    ...
    JHS has some fun pedalcasts since Josh has a collection of 4000+ pedals that they also regularly feature such a wide variety of brands.

    When I bought my first overdrive pedal, it was a used DOD Mystic Blues that I bought second-hand for about $20.
    It's still one of my favorite guitar pedals EVER, and I wouldn't change it for the world. It gives me exactly the tone that I need.
    So I relate to the "I bought a surprisingly cheap yet unexpectedly good drive pedal" thing.

    Great video. I went through (maybe still going through) my OD/Distortion hunt and I loved hearing both the pedals you chose, but more importantly was your thought process. Too many RUclipsrs sing the praises of every demo pedal but few compare more than two and fewer still explain in context why one or more pedal might fit for different rigs. This was a pedal tour and I also liked the tour of literal shops and the city.

    Your music and your videos are always so engaging and entertaining, thanks for sharing them with us! I used to be a pedal fiend before I became a mom and couldn't justify the spending. I've done a few shootouts over the years, to narrow it down to the ones I actually love and will use, and aside from a couple unique "boutique" ones that I kept because I'd never be able to get them again, now I end up playing with a Boss BD-2 the most. With a GE-7 EQ in front of it, I have been able to sculpt almost any tone I like, and it also happens to be the first pedal I ever bought

But I found a book and got my dad into playing guitar.

    Another one to consider is the TC Electronics MojoMojo OD. Been my favorite overdrive for a long time. Has a ton of bass, but it's a joy and like $50 new. Paul Gilbert used one for awhile, until they made him a signature Mojomojo. Not sure what the difference between the two is though.

  • @birdsong2552
    @birdsong2552 4 месяца назад

    I have tried dozens of overdrive pedals, the one thing I learned is that it is not pedal as such, but the interaction between amp and pedal that matters the most. If you realize that, you can get fantastic OD sounds with one or two 30-50 dollar drive pedals. Just test and mix until you find a good combination. And alwaysn always test on your own amp.

  • @noyd4172
    @noyd4172 10 месяцев назад

    Great vlog and a good reminder that the world of music is out there with the sunshine, sunglasses, pavement, grass, and people, not in our collective amazon or reverb cart. Also, I've heard some iffy things about Big Ear so avoiding the pizza was probably for the best. I think your choice ended up sounding perfect; in the internet gear conversation, there's so much emphasis put on versatility that sometimes we get all this stuff and still have no direction. Thanks to the staff being right there, maybe we learned that the perfect pedal isn't the "best" pedal, it's the pedal that's just for you. Funnily enough, your pedalboard and set-and-forget use case has a lot in common with Josh Scott (creator of the Morning Glory), but he uses a Sovtek Mig 50 (very close to a Fender Bassman, darker than your amps) which explains why it felt like 96% right. Every time you hit the octave-up on the Whammy not only was it smooth (like you intended) but I had some the same feeling as my first time listening to Yeah Yeah Yeahs, so not only are you sounding good, but the music is happening! Excited to hear what you write.

    The best overdrive for me: T-Rex Møller (or Moller, if you don't have the Danish ø). I've tried quite a few overdrive pedals and this one just works better than any other, for me. It's similar to a Tube Screamer, but it's not a TS. The T-Rex Møller is more transparent, it doesn't have as much of those honky mids. These are the features:
    - overdrive and a boost channel (gain, tone and level for the OD, one boost knob for the boost volume)
    - a mix knob so you can mix in dry signal with your overdrive, so you'll cut through the mix better
    - a button (version 1)/a switch (version 2) that gives you more or less low end; I prefer more.
    It's simple, but it sounds really good! It has seriously worked with any other overdrive, distortion and fuzz pedal that I have tried it with, before or after those. It's crazy! I put my DOD Carcosa fuzz into it and it just fattened the fuzz up like a champ!
    One interesting thing is that the guys at That Pedal Show did a shootout between different types of pedals compared to the King Of Tone, and it turns out that the T-Rex Møller sounds the closest. That's good, because you can find them for only 50 bucks. I have the first version of the pedal, but it's the same circuit, it's just that the V2 has a switch instead of a button for the low end toggle, as I wrote above.
    Try the T-Rex Møller, I'm curious what you think!

    Holy guacamole! I found your Jag neck video today and you and I have so many of the same guitar loves! We both own Jags, you own a Bass VI and I’ve always wanted one. You also identify more as a bass player, and I do also. You have the Epiphone Valve Jr cab and my amp is an Epiphone Valve Jr! I also learned in this video you’re from Seattle and I live down in the Tacoma area (I NEED to go to those stores!!)
    I have also been eyeing the Nobels OD. I played the mini version at GC while my girlfriend was at Ross shopping, but I wasn’t impressed. I think it also had to do with the Squier Jag a thousand people have used I was playing and non-dialed in demo pedal amp. I think if I went in with MY Jag and took the time to dial in the amp, it would yield better results.
    I think I’ll play my Jaguar now! Thank you for inspiring me!

    Beautifully shot, beautifully mixed, and the editing! It’s awesome to see your content find its style.
    Recently I’ve been chasing the ear-bleeding icepick treble sound on Atomizer and Songs About Fucking by Big Black - I play in & produce noise bands, and it helps to have one guitar part sound very dark and full of spitty velcro fuzz, while the other goes in that Albini icepick metal-on-metal direction. I’ve got close with various Interfax HP-1 clones but they all lack the industrial brutishness of the original.

    • @erikberg8352
      @erikberg8352 10 месяцев назад

      Joe Gore's Porkolator is a solid option for HP-1 sounds. Some of that sound likely comes from the aluminum neck and pickups Albini used.

    Sweet tones and tune! I had no idea Dusty Strings carried electric stuff. 👀
    I'm always searching for fuzz and reverb pedals. Just picked up a Keeley Loomer, which has both. Love the muff setting on it. Can't say it's my favorite verb, but having the flexibility to run it pre or post fuzz is sweet.
    Oh, great meeting you at Mike's gig on Saturday.

      I didn't know they did either until I was on their website! I love the Loomer! Definitely one of my favorites fuzzes.
      It was great to meet you as well! What a great show!

    as ridiculous as the slice of pie fuzz is, i’ve actually had my eye on it since it came out. it’s silly and definitely doesn’t *visually* fit in on a “serious” pedal board, but it has a vibe and sounds amazing.
    the odr-1 is a really fantastic hidden gem, and is absolutely worth checking out at least once. it’s definitely not for everyone, as you said, it’s very dark, but damn if it doesn’t sound great

    If you like the Nobels and the Morning Glory check out the Browne Protein. It's quite expensive even used but it has both circuits in a small dual housing and each side has 3 controls.

    I foundy perfect OD pedal with the blackstar HT-Dual. It has a tube inside and brings real tube overdrive. Love to use it with my Roland Bluescube Artist. (Solid state)

    They all sounded great to me, but I'd probably go with the Keely for my sound. But forget all that, what we really need is a full breakdown and technical analysis of those absolute banger sunglasses!

      The knock off raybans come stock with a black poly finish, gold hardware, and some really nice warm dark lenses!
