‘Member when we mashed on the dirty boxes?
The Metal Zone is super versatile. With the powerful EQ controls you can dial in virtually limitless tones that all sound like shit.
Not the beeeees
The BE-OD Deluxe is where it's at. The internal trim pots, mids, and presence capabilities really make it a stand out gain pedal-a dual channel gain pedal!
Oh yeah, amen to that!
+1 - Ive owned 4 or the 6 pedals reviewed. None of them have the dynamics and sizzle of the BEOD. BEOD also awesome for soloing tone.
Brian Wampler killed it with the Gearbox. What a great, dynamic pedal!
Just bought one. Hopefully it lives up to the hype.
@@HerdingDogRescuer it will 😎
🏁
I agree with you, it’s such a fantastic versatile overdrive for any guitarist! Killer tones for days!🔥🤟🏻🎸
I went digital with a gx-100, but my Gearbox and Fuzztration still live in its fx loop. I couldn’t bear to part with them
The gain trim pot inside the BE-OD makes a hell of a difference to the sound in my opinion. I've turned it almost down to 0 in mine and it is way more usable, dynamic and responsive.
Yes! I have the deluxe and have one channel's gain turned almost down to 0 and it's just lovely.
others might prefer to have the gain turned all the way up.
@@nicosonic Thus the Deluxe.
I got rid my be100 od and for a dirty Shirley and I like it much better . Still has lots of gain so I have the rear trim pot at 11 o’clock
Agree 100%
Man, gotta love the videos that those guys make together. Always funny, informative and a joy to watch. Nice!!
The Metal Zone is an extremely versatile pedal, however it will require time to finesse it into what you want. It's biggest strength is it's ability to provide nearly any tone desired. The biggest weakness is the huge learning curve required to getting the most out of it. Oh and the incredibly sensitive controls, even the teeny tiniest nudge on the controls can result in a huge shift in the tones gotten. Here patience and finesse is required to maximize the gains from this pedal (pun intended).
Boss pretty well fixed the sensitivity on the Waza version, but you have to switch modes...which they didn't do, but perhaps they thought that wouldn't make much of a difference. I really would like to find that sharp biting metallic tone that Ola pulled from the Metal Zone when first trying to run it through the effects loop
@@chapter_black3234 if you don't have an effects loop an equalizer works pretty good I think it boss 7 band
Ola Englund put the Metal Zone through the fx loop and its a massive improvement
Boss metal zone waza craft
12:05 is all one needs to know about the Boss Metal Zone.
Nicely done demo, guys! You were efficient in your coverage of each pedal. I really liked the JHS AT Drive, the Wampler Gearbox, & the MXR EVH Overdrive!
The Metal Zone needs to be pushed into the FX loops... crazy tone when you do!
I liked the EVH and the G3.
Both are brutal and delicious.
That would have been nice to hear the Metal Zone with the costum switch on. The new mode is way more usable.
They could have tried to make the swedish death metal tones too 🤘
Metal Zone was my first pedal..... I love it.
Great video gentlemen! Two of my favorite content/guitar creators in one spot! I love the 5150.
I use the G3 on my board. Yes, it is very tight, but the EQ is so powerful that you can dial in some amazing tones on it.
I absolutely love it.
REVV Rules
Same. I've had the G3 on my board for about a year now and it's definitely a main stay. Love that thing
What amp do you run through
@@willbradley7342 - mine sounds good wether it’s into a Mesa dual recto input or FX loop, peavey bandit 112, even a computer interface with a clean amp sim. Even works amazing as a bass distortion.
@@willbradley7342 Blackstar HT stage 60 MT or a Marshall TSL 122
Metal Zone…Swedish Metal at its finest. Used to run one into a Femder M-80 half stack. Classic
Several of my friends had the Grunge pedal. That is THE REASON I stayed away from pedals for a very long time! That JHS AT+ sounded killer. May have to look into that one some more!
At work (I'm a teacher) I have a 5150 OD into the clean channel of an Orange Crush 35RT. Sounds great & easy to lug around. The gate is a big plus. And yeah, it's absolutely a distortion pedal, NOT an overdrive, but ain't nobody arguing with Ed.
I'm a child of the 80s, not the 90s, so I don't have a DOD Grunge pedal, but I *do* have a DOD THRASH MASTER! It says "thrash" so it's thrash, but it's also hot pink, so it's hair metal, too! I had that going into some little Yamaha practice combo. I cannot imagine the sizzle I was getting.
I recently got into Andy Timmons after he was on That Pedal Show, I got the Halo delay then the AT+. The AT has instant gratification, great rock tones. I love my G3 and the Boss too. I have about 20 dirt pedals, I’m an addict. Great job guys cheers 🤘🏼
You guys are living the dream hanging out at Sweetwater all the time. One day, I'll make my pilgrimage there lol
I've been using a metal zone since 1995 lol, I've tried many many pedals over the years and always come back to the metal zone. Currently I'm just using it as a front boost, with the distortion all the way off. It sounds pretty killer in front of my crate bv 120, tunings at d standard with active pickups it slays.
Those are all great pedals in their own right. Wow.
I have the EvH and its hands down the best distortion in my opinion iv owned also sounds amazing with a 1978 l7 lab series half stacks killer tone.
That EVH is damn good. I think I need one.
Thank you UNC for bringing the GRUNGE!!!🤘
Another great vid guys, thanks! I’ve got the Revv but now want to try the Timmons and Gearbox. I’ve always thought about the EVH also but never gave it a go. Hmmm decisions decisions lol
I own the EVH 5150 Overdrive and I love it. I tried the Friedman, but much preferred the EVH, and the noise gate is a big and much-needed bonus. I also have a Boss OD-200 which is good for metal tones too thanks to its boost options and noise gate.
And I'm the opposite. The BE-OD for me was godly. I wanted the EVH to sound great but I couldn't dial the fizz out of it.
These are all great, but the 5150 is *stellar*. It also sounds great going into anything, while some others are more picky about what amp you use.
The JCM 800 on the low side is indeed a great choice. Amp distortion overall is the best distortion, I owned a JVM410 for many many years, and even a few rectos. However, a high headroom amp(such as a JCM 800 or a Super Reverb which is what I now own) getting slammed by a pedal is also quite its own experience. Pedals are also simply put convenient. I also happen to love amps such as the Two Rock Traditional Clean and Bloomfield Drive just as much as I love a Soldano SLO 100.
Over the Dual and Triple Recs?
I think that the MT-2 shines with super low tunings. It’s SO tight that it helps to keep everything in place and deletes flub. The parametric and gain is just so easy to over do… Think Crowbar!
I am a pedal junkie and I have found the 5150 overdrive (distortion) to be the tastiest, and I have them in all my pedal chains (studio, living room, music room etc).
It works super well at lower gain settings with an Xotic Soul Driven pedal, also on low gain settings, in front of it. Instant Van Halen tone, or any choice of 80s hair metal.
MXR 5150 is my favorite! Another great Wampler pedal is Pinnacle Deluxe V2. I A/B’d those beside each other and they each have something special going on. 5150 is awesome for thicker high gain and Pinnacle is more open for classic/hair metal tones.
these are literally the best overdrives. LOL. great stuff fellas!
REVV Rules & MT-2 for life!!🤘🏽
Wow very useful vid for distortion pedals, pls do more pedals 🙏🙏🙏
Revv g3 for the win boys! Thanks for making the video
I’m fortunate enough to own a revv 3 and I absolutely love the crap out of it. Doesn’t leave my pedal board
Pedal distortion into an amp is fun. I just look at pedal distortion and amp distortion as two different things. I like both and see them as tonal options. It’s REALLY fun to set up an amp to be overdriven and then stack a distortion pedal on top of that. So you can get a mix of the two. Really great of you’re looking for something more unique.
If you want to try something unique, stick a fuzz pedal or other type of dirt box in the loop of a dirty amp -- running amp distortion into a dirt pedal can be crazy fun.
I had the JHS AT+ and use now the MXR EVH 5150 with exact that configuration: Low Gain but boost. And it sounds great!
Fantastic guys . That EVH really sounded killer . Might have to go get one now🤘🏻
Amazing chemistry together. Entertaining
My fave is a Wampler Triple Wreck on the blue channel with modest gain settings, but pushed with a transparent OD in front of it (I use the Greer Lightspeed) through a clean amp with a lot of headroom.
Gearbox is my gig sound. Stacked and both sides alone. Versatile af. Love it.
I LOVE waking up to this!!! hmmmm do I drink another coffee.. choices choices
Dude, I had an original DOD Grunge and Death Metal pedal back in the day. Man, that brings back some memories.
The metal zone excels when plugged into return section of effect loop bypassing the pre amp section,
Yep, that red one gots the sound I'm lookin 4!
Metal zone for life 🔥🔥🔥
But remember , put it in the fx loop send return 😂👌
I think Ola Englund did a video illustrating exactly that fact. It actually sounded amazing going through the back of the amp rather than in front
@@Barrsie yes. A few years back i think
I agree, the Metal Zone is a powerful pedal ...once it's adjusted correctly AND in the FX loop. I still have my MZ on my pedal board and on my amp's FX loop.
That’s an actual real clean 🧼 tone
I have to say that my favorite DP currently is the Gehenna, especially for my purposes. It's one of the most tweakable pedals ever. And sounds sick.
Thank you for trolling us with the “clean tone” statements. I had a good laugh at that. 😂
Fluff is ridiculously good at quickly dialing in an awesome sound.
19:58 givin’ up from the Darkness riff ❤
AT is awesome, have that one. The Empress Heavy is also worth checking out…different enough that both are worth having.
Great Video! Amazing 😍❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Love the sound of that JHS pedal. Never heard it before but it does almost sound like a Marshall head.
Ah the sweet metalzone tones!
For metal tones, nothing beats the Amptweaker Tight Metal Pro and the Empress Heavy. Monster pedals.
Would love to see these distortion pedals running through the pre-amp, the metal zone is a beast that way
I have a JHS Supervolt V2 for some reason and I must say it's a killer pedal. They seem to make some all around great pedals and I will have to check out something more my style.
Glad to see my woodshed heroes being represented : ) AT and AW and REVV : )
You know a piece of gear is good when you just suddenly start playing like a beast as Ben did with that JHS pedal
my first distortion padel was the dod metal x what a beast it was
JHS for my tastes.. I may pick one up. You both did your jobs very well.
You can get a Plexi sound out of the Friedman BE-OD if you turn the internal trim (gain) pot down and then have the gain knob really low.
Haha. Uncle Ben sneaking in some Loverboy, right after some hints of Limelight by Rush @7:00 Good man!
Cool episode. I was hoping you had a DOD "Metal Maniac Pedal" for kicks! lol My very first distortion pedal as a kid. It actually wasn't too bad. I chose that rather than the Metal Maniac back in the day! lol
Great video guys. The Boss Metal Zone is the only one I would not use. The rest sounded great.
U brought out da Grunge! I have DoD digital delay and combo flanger chorus in storage like you.
You are great guys
I've had the G3 and the G4. Loved the G3 for chugs, but really had to tame the treble. The G4 was never my thing. Have a BE-OD, and once you discover how the treble and presence knobs interact, it's absolutely stellar. But all in all, the JHS @+ and the Wampler Gearbox surprised me the most in this shootout. Ultimately I'm into amps. They're just way cooler.
Too much overdrive is never enough!😂great video guys👍
The pedal I’ve most used is a Boss DS-1 distortion (they’re orange). Great pedal for breakup rock tones. More classic than metal, though.
They all sound pretty good. The EVH is the one that sounds they way I like to play. The JHS just went onto my wish list.
Perfect test, direct in the front of the amp. So it sounds like it sounds for 80% of All Amateur players.
Thabks ging forqard with this style of videos
The evh 5150 lead to me purchasing the 100 watt el34 evh head. Absolutely love it. Gotta get that revv tho.
That metal zone belongs in the fx loop. It literally sounds like a beast of a high gain preamp in the fx loop
Hey! That grunge pedal is my middle school years. And yes you're right, they were issued to all of us. Lmfao. Its like no matter where I went there was 4 of those things just laying around. And lets not forget the dod death metal distortion. Wanna talk about a jar of bees? Let's talk about the OG jar of beez
NOICE VID! MORE PAPA FLUFF AND UNCLE BEN COLLABS!
I recently bought the Revv g3 and be od deluxe to try them both and to only keep one but boy they are both different beasts. Love the modern tone of the g3 perfect for chugging rhythm. The be od deluxe has a really good rock/meta tone and is more versatile. Might just keep both
I’ve tried all these pedals. The Revv, Friedman and 5150 are all great. But the 5150 takes the cake. It feels the best. And has a built in gate. Amazing pedal 😎🤘🏼
Will the 5150 use a 9 volt as a power source or do you need a 9-Volt AC adapter?
The gearbox sounded really good. And the 5150 for heavier stuff
In my opinion the MXR EVH sounds the best, but the JHS also sounds very interesting 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Ah yes, a video featuring my two favorite internet Guitar Dad figures. This’ll be a fun one !
The Grunge Pedal!!!! 🤣🤣🤣 JHS sounded amazing!
The jhs andy timmons is on my next pedal buy. The headroom push even from iPhone speakers seemed to jump out the most compared to the others
Low key the Grunge is my favourite for my bass (with both tone knobs at like 9 o'clock, the gain super low and the volume at noon just for ease of remembering as it's in one side of an LS-2, blending in some clean signal and using the volumes of it to dial my overall volume/output)
I just wish it sounded as good as I remember it did when I was 15 on my guitar 😂
I have the JHS @AT on my board. For a more brutal distortion, you should check out a G2D Morpheus. I don't use it much; but, it has a lot of gain on top similar to the Rev G3. It has a gate on board like the 5150 as well. When the drive is turned all the way down on the Morpheus, it is still a redonculous amount of gain.
Westminster Effects made a pedal for the guitarist of Skillet (whom I do not listen to lol) but the pedal is basically a tuned Rev F Rectifier in a box and it's the best rectifier preamp pedal I've personally ever heard. Check out some videos on it, it's called the 2716. Cheesy band but excellent preamp pedal.
Great demo. I would have loved to hear each pedal, dialed in, one more time in quick succession though .
I've been using the AT+ on my board for a year and it's fab! A godsend of a pedal when I'm having to use backline gear.
The Northern Mauler sits between the G3 and G4, and it's perfect. I haven't really used the HM-2 circuit...
I feel like the way to get a metal zone working for you is to set the bass and treble to somewhere that sounds reasonable, then boost the mids and use the sweep to find the frequency boost that sounds good... then go back to the bass and treble and fine tune.
The Metal Zone needs to go through the effects loops. It has its own preamp in it. It sounds very different and great through the effects loop!!
Props for the Humans Being riff from Uncle Ben. That's a fairly deep cut.
Correct way to dial in a Metal Zone:
Distortion at 9 o'clock, all EQ at noon, level at whatever makes sense for your setup. Now, max out the mids control, and while strumming sweep the mid-Q across the frequencies until you find that nasty nasally frequency. Now, turn the mids control almost off, cutting that frequency out. Adjust treble, bass, and gain to taste.
You can also run it directly into the input of your FX loop (guitar -> pedal -> FX loop input), bypassing your amps built-in pre-amp and using the pedal as a pre-amp. This works pretty well for a lot of different distortion pedals, and opens up some new tonal possibilities.
Yes Ben Ive been workin for the weekend for 35 years! :(
I have and like the AT+. I have. BE OD clone by GUP Tech that is pretty cool. I think the Empress Heavy is my favorite distortion pedal right now. Including a noise gate is a great thing.
Brooo's you have to plug the Metalzone into the return of the FX loop! Sounds totally different and way more useable. I'm sure many have seen Ola's video on this :)
Dude, the METAL ZONE.
My dad (a drummer) gave me two pedals when I got my first guitar and amp as a kid. A metalzone and an 80s Ibanez tube screamer (still have it)
That metalzone was dimebag in a box for me.
I need to snag another one for fun
Love mine dist full tilt 2 mid knobs far right for razor sharp sustain
loverboy! i love it on that friedman
Use the metal zone like a boost and get the municipal waste tone
I hate to divulge my secret sauce, but the Rocktron Silver Dragon is pretty sweet. I buy them when I can because they aren’t in use anymore
