  • This Prague postal newspaper was published for the next 53 years.
    In 1772 the paper was suspended. Long Roller
    The revival came only in the 1980s, and in the intervening decades only written German was published.
    I think that despite today's modern age full of competition, such as the Internet and other media, newspapers still do not belong to complete history.
    And that's all for today's video.

    A wonderful restoration! This brings back a memory, before my mom passed away in 2009 a neighbor brought over the "device" I had no clue what it was but my mom took one look and her eyes lit up I had thought to get rid of what looked like scrap metal but she said oh no... we are keeping this! I asked her what it was and she said..I'll show you. I was told to grab some newspapers we had and magazines ..she had me tear apart the magazines and line them up. (she was in a wheelchair at the time and a bit weak) but I gave her the stuff when I was done and she said just watch..she put the pieces together bit by bit, turning the handle and she just kept smiling till she got a pretty decent log size. She said there with a huge grin, I looked at her..a log? she laughed she said yep! She told me how when she was little her father insisted on having one, as they were quite poor she and her father would walk along the railroad tracks picking up coal and newspapers that were flung from the trains, they would stash the coal and make as many logs they could to heat the old house. It brought back memories of some happy times between her and her dad that she had missed. Oy I think I inherited her gift of gab and the love of old things. Thank you for restoring this wonderful piece of history and for the fond memory. :)

Como sempre as ferramentas que usa em seus vídeos, são bem cuidadas e limpas. Hoje vc usou algumas novinhas. Gostei do relato de sua esposa, e também a demonstração interessante do ROLO LONGO.

    This is a great restoration again Radek and Veronika, well done. I've never seen a roller such as this, it must have been an important tool to households without sufficient funds. When we moved house 8 years ago we became the proud owners of open fireplaces for the first time in our lives. I saved newspapers and magazines, cut them into small pieces and soaked them in water, then packed the pulp into a brick shaped press. When they were dry we used them as firelighters, unfortunately they made a lot of ash and I haven't made any for years and now we buy firewood. Greetings to you both from Hampshire UK.

    • @VeradonaRestoration
      @VeradonaRestoration  8 месяцев назад +1

      Hello Nick, yes I agree with the amount of ash, it is a disadvantage. This newspaper scroll should come from you in England, at least that's what Veronica read. We have never had such a thing. At first I thought that it was used as a paper tray, maybe in a meat store?! But once Veronica found out what it was for, it took on a whole new meaning. Anyway, an interesting but probably little-used item. Greetings to you and the whole family :) R&V

    Even the most mundane objects had elegance designed into them back in the day. My grandfather-in-law had a home-built one of these to recycle newspaper in their Wisconsin farmhouse that was heated by a wood stove in the parlor. As I recall, it was some bent rebar for the roller and handle, and piece of half-round gutter mounted on a wooden stand. We spent many a long winter's evening winter in the kitchen playing cards and "rolling paper."

    These paper log rollers were common & cheap to buy back in the heyday of unsolicited junk mail from the 1970s through the mid 1990s. After that, the internet pretty much eliminated the junk mail industry. You could find them in cast iron, sheet metal & plastic... I knew a man who heated his entire house, all winter, with paper logs. He told all his neighbors, friends & coworkers that he would take all their junk mail off their hands & they were happy to unload the unsolicited junk mail on him. He got about 2 decades' worth of free heating by using such a gadget. Win-win for everybody!

      "The internet pretty much eliminated the junk mail industry." Just out of curiosity, what planet are you on?

    • @j.l.emerson592
      @j.l.emerson592 8 месяцев назад

      @ronm3245 Planet Earth! I can happily report that I receive about 90% less junk mail than I received back in the 1970s to the mid-1990s. Yes, there is still unsolicited junk mail still being sent through the mail, but the amount has dwindled dramatically. And it is decreasing yearly. There was a time when I had to bring a box with me to hold all the mail from my mailbox. What was really annoying was that I had to sort my mail, piece by piece, separating the real mail from the junk mail. Maybe in my lifetime, I'll see the end of the junk mail industry...
