On the 2nd wave of Black Metal? Sure. Emperor, Thorns and Ved Buens Ende were in leagues of their own. Nowadays? You have Blut Aus Nord, Deathspell Omega and Mgla that managed to elevate Black Metal to a whole new level, all three heavily influenced by the previous three, but with their own twist.
Listen to Blut Aus Nord's Memoria Vetusta II: A Dialogue With The Stars. It's like a great Emperor album that Emperor never put out. BAN is great over all too, but they do other types of black metal projects. They are the pioneers of the 3rd wave, but they'll do a melodic record, and older school stuff sometimes.

I was there and it is the best concert I've ever attended. I ended up with tears in my eyes when they were nearing the end because they played every single song I had wished for. Perfect concert and a beautiful night.
Lyrics: Curse you, all men Whose coil is strong. I recognise the sparrows heart Beneath the theatre of misery. Disbelivers shalt by dawn Be forced to forever mourn. Curse you, all men That resent my empire. Cause I have risen again, At war this time. The truth I speak is your decease. My word is your defeat. And thou shalt not Be able to hide anymore. The prophecy will conquer at last Your sense of reality. With mission to kill, The theatre of misery. He has risen again, Armed with the source of sin. And as humans shalt fade, He shalt inherit their strength. Men of the damned, You will reluctantly Secure His eternal victory. Curse you, all men Whose coil is strong. I recognise the sparrows heart Beneath the theatre of misery. Disbelivers shalt by dawn Be forced to forever mourn. The truth I speak is your decease. My word is your defeat. Yes, you are indeed the few. I am the one.
To this day the musical genius in these songs is still extraordinary for the metal scene. Remarkable compositions and some of the stuff Emperor did would probably make Bach go "Noice."
All metal is great until the band goes live in a large open air concert.. then you see the good ones slipping away from the heard. Open air concerts are the ultimate challenge and all my favorite bands pass that each time. All hail Emperor
bububububak we're honestly extremely lucky to have grown up and around a band like emperor.... I saw them live about 10 years ago and it opened my eyes to what black metal... And all metal.... Should sound like.... Emperor is truly one of a kind.
It's weird. I like a lot of Emeperor's songs but something still hinders me to fully enjoy their albums. Maybe it's the crazy complexity of the songs haha
There are really awesome Blackened Death bands, like Svart Crown or Hate. But there´s no Black Metal band that comes even closer to Emperor, the melody, the strenght, the agression, the technicallity and the darkness of Emperor could not be achieved easily.
What do you think of this sound? Is it LIVE, or probably sourced through the monitors? Anyway, apart from the outstanding musicianship, trym is a damn beast!
oh of course man...but just to see if you would even dig it..no need to waste good money on something you will be displeased with unless you are the type to buy stuff like that just to say you own it...which there is nothing wrong with that but i personally dont buy cd's/dvd's i don intend to watch and listen to...ive outgrown the need to own every release my favs put out...just me...rock on man!
@@aymanlafaz nah, i still liked prometheus a lot. it has some traits of ihsahn's later solo work, and it's a bit more experimental, but it's still a fantastic album imo. emperor was always on the more progressive side of black metal, i don't think prometheus was out of character. but again, they chose to end the emperor name there, and ihsahn continued this direction with his solo work in a more pronounced fashion, which i also like a lot. so i guess that explains why i like prometheus. but whether it's up your alley or not it's nowhere near the same level of drop off of some other legendary bands.
Trym Torson is a machine gun, and his face is like: wtf so easy
He's like
hmm what should I have for dinner
Emperor has always been on a different level than any other Black Metal bands.
You got that right!!
they are the pinnacle of black metal
@Joe Ward Yep. Dissection and Emperor are on the same level, but that's it.
@Joe Ward Dissection weren't a Black Metal band, Blackened (melodic) Death Metal imo.
Some people seem to not notice that these type of bands consist of amazing musicians. They are quite incredible
Agree!!
Thats pretty normal in my time!!
Emperor is the apex of Black Metal. Haven't heard anything better all these years later.
I believe that Emperor is one of the best bands ever

Emperor is the Apex of music in the latter half of the 20th century.
colin poitras then and enslaved
Forget Black Metal, forget Metal, this is some of the best music ever written across the board.
Contrapuntal genius.
Very well put, I was just imagining J.S.Bach listening to this. This is indeed superlative counterpoint.
Absolutely.
what contrapuntal means?
@@end_of_time_real aka counterpoint, "the relationship between two or more musical lines (or voices) which are harmonically interdependent yet independent in rhythm and melodic contour"
having watched all these 2006 wacken vids i think its safe to say this was the best black metal concert.

@@CrabJuice83 Man, that must have been incredible. I've always wanted to go to one of these metal fests, but leaving the US is so expensive. :/
Proof that Trym has only two arms and is not, as widely rumoured, an octopus.

if there's anything that deserves to be called epic it's Emperor playing live
the dual guitars sounds genius, reminds me of death metal in some ways.
This album is more Death Metal oriented.
(even it has a song called "The warriors of modern death" hehehe)
It most definitely has a Morbid Angel atttude.
Easily one of the best extreme metal acts, especially live. Cheers Emperor.

I need this live DVD in my life!!!
Their best song hands down.
My, his hands make it look so easy. Ihsahn is the Robert Fripp of metal.
Drummerinthe Park And he does it while singing. A beast.
Dimmu dont even come close
Will Hammond Agree
Their first album was great
Dimmu is for boys, Emperer is for men!
Dimmu’s not even in Emperor’s league, they shouldn’t be compared, it’s too unfair
Beautiful
This is pure beauty \m/
LOVE THIS SONG!!!!!!!
Still one of the true greats.
Amazing...
masterpiece!!
Unbelievable!

Emperor are the best imo.
1 of the top 5 best live acts in metal period

Quite possibly the best 4:48 seconds of black metal... PERIOD.

I wonder if I'll ever see/hear another band match this. I hope they have lots of musical children to follow in their footsteps!

He is growling backing vocals too

Ihsahn is a god
this comment is uber epic. thumbs up for you!
Feminists should love this.
hahaha
What do you think of this sound? Is it LIVE, or probably sourced through the monitors?
Anyway, apart from the outstanding musicianship, trym is a damn beast!
monitors of course sounds too clean
Thought so. Though, indeed the musicianship is outstanding!
Sourced through the monitors?
It's live
sourced through the monitors is still live. It just goes through the board instead of the speakers so it doesn't have all the ambient noise.

Trym. Enough said.
this is like BDSM good!
god damn it, why'd they have to break up?? Just why????
Valfar maybe?
they knew when to stop. c'mon, what's better, stopping and being legendary or going down poorly like metallica, morbid angel dimmu borgir?
they actually started declining when releasing prometheus that album was overdone in my opinion
