Yea, they're masters now, they were kids when they/Ihsahn wrote it. Still brilliant to write that album at 16/17 yo. Pretty much unprecedented. He's a metal Mozart.
This song was amongst the first 3 black metal albums i ever heard in my teens. Immortal - Battles in the North, Emperor - In the Nightside Eclipse, Satyricon - Nemesis Divina ( and we had Mother North uncut on VHS ). :There's no other art like this. Nothing compares.
The voice of Ihsahn, the rhythm guitars and the drums are addictive, i saw Emperor live in 2006 at Wacken Open Air Festival, but i don't know if this track is from the same show because the band had a few live shows at Wacken, i saw Emperor live once again in 2014 at Sweden Rock Festival, Emperor is the best black metal band ever, thanks for sharing.
This is from the 2006 show, only one at Wacken that was at night. Their nightside and anthems anniversary shows at wacken were sadly both during the day. I was second row this show 😄

fucking emperor is one of the reasons i love metal, its the inheritor of classical musics complexity & intricacy, nothing like pop shit these days that can hardly even be considered music, made in 5 minutes in protools layers upon layers of emperors musical complexity are untouched by anything else really, its masterpiece level shit..i've played over a decade & it still requires my utmost attention playing samoths leads, let alone doing ihsahns vocals (the philosophical insanity of them aside)
Nightside eclipse is an absolute classic as it's the first black metal album to incorporate symphonic elements. Can't wait to see them the second time at bloodstock this year doing the anthems album this time in it's full entirety as its 20th anniversary of anthems to the welkin at dusk gotta say they are might favourite black metal band of all time and in my opinion the best black metal I like in terms of the their wrath of the tyrant EP and their first 3 albums!!!!

This is Emperor, not Gorgoroth... And no passion you said? I'd say the exact opposite, Ihsahn is living for his music! He's got a guitar to play, so you can't really expect him to run around the stage in amok. He want's the music to be perfect. This in not "another day at the office", this is their goodbye and they know it. Watch the whole concert. At the end, after they've played Inno a Satana, Ihsahn thanks the audience and in his voice you can hear he's really touched. A great moment...
they used some of that back in the day, ihsahns spike-pauldrons were quite mighty, but most of the true old school black metal dudes have given up on corpse paint since mostly only the douche bands use it now (except immortal/behemoth), hijacked by bands like dimmu but i agree, seeing emperor live has insanely commanding presence, like staring into the maw of some massive leviathan no extra BS needed though watain uses fog blood & blood to great effect, one of the best live shows ive ever seen
Instead of using make up, Samoth used gasoline and a lighter to show his ideas about organized religion, actions speak louder than words. This band shaped a genre, set the tone and stood out in doing so. All hail Emperor, we mourn the loss.
I have to praise Trym for doing his best to stick with the original drum playing. On their Live Ceremony DVD he displayed a serious issue with keeping in time and doing his own thing, if the latter is even a plausible critique. But I can understand why people are criticizing Ihsahn's vocals, 'Nightside Eclipse was the only album where he pushed his vocals to the edge of extreme, following that album he's been sneaking by with rasps. Fortunately he morethan makes up for this with brilliant music.

Personnally, I love Ihsahn's shoulders, even you are right, the only thing which can affect the atmosphere of the Mighty Emperor is its music.
