This is exactly the root of the problem. Hiring people who often never finished high school, then went out and got a GED. Affirmative action hires who can barely count, use "Axe" instead of "ask" and so on. It's little surprise that the school district can't balance it's books, just like the city. Oakland mayor couldn’t even make the deadline to receive federal funds for the city to combat retail theft. And she fired the police chief without cause !
She and the Administration did drop the ball big time on the Fed Bag. But Armstrong was fired because he was covering for bad cops, it wasn't nothing. The City Council who have been in office for YEARS and actually caused all this are the most to blame.
The mayor fired him “without cause” because the mayor reserves the right to fire the chief without cause but that was an administrative maneuver more than anything. He messed up handling internal investigations and the mayor took a decisive action.
Don't feel sorry for that police chief. He's a POS that refuses to issue CCW permits to us residents here in Oakland.

When the lawlessness gets this bad, it’s arguably not enough to just add more police. I would think at this level of chaos, you must not just increase dramatically the number of police but also have focused police divisions beefed up as well. Having a police chief and a DA who is concerned with upholding the law couldn’t hurt either.

When I had my Corvette commuting to SF and would drive through Oakland I kept it moving. Don't stop for too long (or at all), don't let yourself get boxed in and keep your head on a swivel. I would also carry something to protect yourself. You can't rely on the cops to save you. Parts of Oakland look like a third world country.

Cameras aren’t going to help if the police don’t attempt to recover the car in a timely manner. There are lots of people who have AirTags or gps trackers in cars they often call the police and the police don’t have the man power to respond. I really do feel bad for that lady who lost her suburban she tried to turn her life around collected bottles for a year to buy that car.

I wish I could show sympathy for Oakland residents. Unfortunately their voting habits (ala Pamela Price) show me that most of them prefer to live in a state of perpetual learned helplessness. You talk to most Oakland residents about locking up criminals and they give you this “deer in the headlights” look. You cannot help people that are in unwilling to garner the political will to help themselves.
