Video 3 of asking Kyle Reid to Review Blood Visions by Jay Reatard
The WOO has actually gone down in recent years compared to the nonagon days, so many hooks on Nonagon are just WOOOOO
I can't believe I never noticed it before... Or maybe I just blocked it out of my memory
now we get a lot more YEAHS at least we did during the residency, not a lot of woos
I love petrodragonic apocalypse. I think every album from king gizzard is my favorite album.
I love Rats Nest but I had the same experience listening to PDA for the first time. I realized I can't just sit down and listen to metal. Then I put it on while doing chores and felt like I was on cocaine. By the time I finished up I was two thirds through Flamethrower, so I sat down and felt my body ascend into the spacey soup of synths. 10/10 experience.
Ya I definitely feel like it's a genre that works best while you're doing something else. For me at least
@@billyfox1468 Infest Rats Nest is Pure Trash Metal, while PDA is combination Prog-Psyche-Trash Metal
Take a shot every time Kyle says "jam"
How to die from alcohol poisoning
If you didn't know, the initials of the songs in changes spell out the album name!
Change
Hate dancin'
Astroturf
No body
Gondii
Exploding suns
Short change
I did know that! Super cool
As a gizz head, I still don't know the full gizzverse.
I think Changes is the best of the bunch as an album, but I think the song Hypertension off Laminated Denim is the single greatest thing they've ever done. There is so much depth to that song I keep discovering new things i love every time I listen. So many incredibly great riffs and progressions, mysterious time travel themed lyrics, there's a gong that hits exactly at the 5 minute and 10 minute mark, one of the tastiest bass licks ever at the 3.06 mark and really the whole song the bass is amazing, the words "Who am I but the canary in the coalmine?", really catchy ending chorus, and the fact that the whole band sounds extremely tight rhythmically even though they are jamming which is extremely hard to pull off. As a whole I think it's their masterpiece.
Hypertension was Cav favorite song
I’ve actually started playing piano again because of hearing changes ! It’s so good!! Love Astroturf the drums on it and the flute is so funky!
That's so cool to hear!
You say "mooooootor...spiiiiiirrrrrit" like it's not fuckin sick.
Lol cool video
lmao ok it is a little sick
GILA, GILA, GILA!!!!
GILA MONSTER!!!
PDA is kinda overwhelming, I could not listen it in a row when it was released because it was so tiring, but now I love it, and it fells kinda short every time I try. The trick is to approach this album as a proggresive record with thrashy guitars. When you listen it more analytically you see how unconventional it is. The drumming is far from conventional 4/4, is always changing and introducing new ideas, very subtle to the point you don't even notice them because it keeps the flow. Is like Polygondwanaland levels of complexity for with the abrasing sound texture of rats nest. For example almost every song features a very tool inspired tribal section drumming breakdown in the middle and is some kind of motiff that connects all the album, in the last electronic section of Flamethrower this motiff seems to be leading into their next album.
I personally don't have difficulties with the sound of PDA but hate the vocals, these sadly remain unpleasant and tiring to my ears :(
Can’t wait for next year’s video!
I had never listened to these guys until a few months ago. Then for some reason out of nowhere a video of them performing Dragon live for the first time showed up in my feed. I’m a pretty big fan of prog and metal so I was blown away when I first heard it. I then found the music video and it was funny as shit, so I decided to show my siblings and they turn to me and say “what the fuck did you just show me”
And yes, I can confirm any form of metal is 100x better when you’re at the gym
Definitely worth having another listen to the albums you didn’t like on first listen. In my case, I initially didn’t like ‘Omnium’ or ‘Fishies’, but at a different time I really enjoyed them
Petrodroconic is definitely more prog metal escq which can feel kind of inaccessible at first. Thus album reminded me a lot of sone symphony X type stuff at tymes when it wasnt being tool esque in certain breakdowns. Which is def up my alley so this album was a treat for me. I love prog metal and the king gizzard spice on it was awesome.
I was thinking the same thing in regards to Symphony X. Motor Spirit sounds like a sister track to Set the World on Fire off Paradise Lost
just wait until they release 16 albums within the next 10 minutes
For real
Yes king gizzard is also known for saying “WOOO” there is a vid on yt and I think they have said it about 200 times
That's so funny. I don't know how I didn't notice it before
Just came across your video here and after watching your review, I'd like to share my opinion about these albums as well: Tl;Dr, I overall like all the four albums very much but Ice, Death esp. is my personal favorite cut out of four followed by Laminated Denim.
For me, Ice, Death feels like an (almost) perfect fun journey from start to the end. The somewhat spontaneous and sincere nature of their jam music is what makes the vibe and drives the excitement out of the album, each song offers its own distinct sound and mood and the transition between the songs happens rather smoothly. Just like being on a curious journey where you don't know what to expect along the way but once you find out, each turn of the musical twists will only give you a different kind of excitement and joy instead.
Perhaps I'm the only one here who actually enjoys the final track Gliese 710. To my ears, it's a fantastic closure track that evokes the kinda vibe similar to the (rather) obscure classic prog band Van Der Graaf Generator, quite a bit. And while some others may find it off putting but from the aesthetical/musical context alone, it's still fitting to the core concept of the album being based on the seven Greek modes (the last song being based on the Locrian Mode) and the transition from aeolian (Iron Lung) to locrian (Gliese) is nothing but a tasty one for me😘👌
This may sound surprising to some others but I think Laminated Denim is a lot better than many people probably think it is. From a musical standpoint, it's a fantastic companion to the Ice, Death and while it may not be offering something new and/or more adventurous as a follow-up album, I still love it and actually feel and vibe with the underlying sincerity behind the perceived simplicity and serenity of the music (also finding to be the more meditative and consistent album, musically).
Perhaps Changes is my "least" favorable album on this list (in a relative sense), but it's nothing short of a fantastic album nonetheless. I still appreciate the fact that this album doesn't just sound distinctively unique out of the rest, but also feels quite like a callback/tribute to the (again) obscure Canterbury Scene in certain ways. FYI it's a subgenre/subset of the broad 70s British prog music that combines disjointed styles and vibes of pop/rock/R'nB, a progressive & technical musical style based on jazz and classical influence, and a whimsical psychedelic edge coupled with a distinct sense of humor found among the residents of Canterbury City of England.
And last but not least, PetroDragonic Apocalypse. Easily my favorite metal album to come out of the Gizzverse, but I get if many ppl may get turned off by the album initially 'cause this album is a progressive take on the thrash metal genre. It draws upon different styles from various classic-era bands like Megadeth, Slayer and Metallica alongside their contemporaries at the time, as well as the latter alternative bands such as Tool etc.
But with the mindset and thinking framework that leans slightly more into the tradition of bands such as Mastodon and others. This is clearly demonstrated with the distinctive use of polyrhythm and irregular meters both on the rhythmic and melodic lines in the very KGLW fashion that should be recognizable for the avid listeners or fans, alongside the use of recurring themes and ideas found from their previous album.
For me, I don't have the slightest problem with the technical composition. Having listened to many complex and technical musical pieces out there, I found this album to be rhythmically intuitive and stands out over the rest of modern metal bands out there (esp. the prog ones) in the most satisfying way possible despite the disjointed rhythms.
The complex polyrhythm found in modern prog metal/"djent" can get pretty boring quickly and/or overbearing to listen to at times, and this album feels like a breathe of fresh air. A brand new proggy metal album that's not your typical djenty, progressive metalcore "dick measuring contest" vibe.
@@fossilsunbeam1011 Even Stu himself admitted that Gliese is the hardest track to produce, simply because it's difficult to arrange a song with the materials performed entirely in locrian mode due to its inherent harmonic tension.
this is my fav channel on yt rn
I appreciate that!
Loved the video, love king gizzard. Was changes your favorite of the four or was it ice death?
Changes definitely
Jamtastic video Kyle I really enjoyed it W video with W takes as always :)))
Haha thank you anthony :)
@@KyleReidMu you are very welcome Kyle :) anytime.
great vibes and i love the format, also long live the gizzards
The WOO is a king gizzard staple
YEEEEAH finally some good music on this channel (i'm being ironic)
Ice, Death,… and PetroDragonic Apocalypse really have been stuck with me
gotta love summer Kyle !
Ah man, Laminated Denim is one of my favs. Hypertension my fav jam period.
"L Take" lol no but honestly, as a huge metal fan, and a huge King Gizzard fan, I'd say this album is immediately one of their best. It's super proggy and is for sure some of their most impressive and technical songs, especially out of all their metal catalog. Dragon blew my mind when it came out. It's fair if not everyone is into metal but I can firmly say this metal album is phenomenal. 9/10
I'll also add that my favorites are Ice Death and Laminated Denim. I thought their exploration into modes was awesome, and actually love Ice V, Iron Lung, Gliese 710 and Magma (favorite) the most of it. Laminated Denim, while being jammy, is also pretty proggy and I love that stuff. Hypertension is also one of my favorite KG songs too. I like Changes a lot, but I go towards their heavier stuff more often. That being said, it's more fun to go back to than the nearest similar Sketches, but I'm always down to hear some more explorations into jazz and stuff like that, especially if Mild High Club collabs with them again lol.
All 4 are absolute masterpieces but Laminated Denim is my favorite.
Nice name
Would’ve been funny if the 10/10 albums video before was full of black metal and death metal
It's funny. Infest the Rats Nest is low-tier Gizz for me (though low-tier Gizz is still decent mind you) while PetroDragonic Apocalypse is my second favourite album from them only beaten by Mind Fuzz. I'm more of a prog thrash guy than i'm a regular thrash guy so i feel like that contributes to me liking PetroDragonic Apocalypse as much as i do. I also feel like the album comes off more like a Gizz metal album (in that it has seamless transitions and motifs throughout among other things) than Infest the Rats Nest which was more like a standard thrash metal album by comparison. I totally get your reasons for not vibing to it though. It's certainly a lot.
I too felt like PDA was more of a "gizz metal album" than Rats Nest honestly
Infest The Rats Nest is easily my favorite, I highly recommend relistening. Best Thrash album ever created.
You're like an alien to me I have the opposite opinions. Petrodraconic Apocalypse and Laminated Denim are the ones I come back to the most where IDPLML and changes kinda exhaust me a bit. I like all the songs on IDPLML individually but listening to the whole album is kind of a chore and I feel like changes key change gimmick overstays it's welcome after the opening track. Gondii however is one of my favorite KGLW songs that hook is addicting
Dude I forgot to mention in the video but Gondii is so freaking good
"7 piece psych-rock band" ☹
You should definitely show your dad some gizzard.
You know what they say... Nonagon Infinity opens the door..
@@KyleReidMu Wooooooo
Talk about silver chord pls? 🥺
you've listened to all of their albums and you've only just started noticing the WOO!s? lmfao, there's a whole ass youtube video over 10 minutes long that's a compilation of them doing it
non-metal-fan gizz fans unite! I absolutely adore Ice Death etc., it's probably in my top 5 gizz albums easily
W video
W Video.
While I would say petrodragonic is not as strong conceptually as rats nest, it is still quite strong.
The repeating chanting of motor spirit itself symbolizes this dependence on cars, equating it almost as a relationship of people worshipping a god.
have you listened to ween yet?
I started listening to them at the beginning of the year but then stopped to work on other projects. I'll have to do a proper dive later on
Would love to hear your review on Ween albums!
L video Petrodragonic Papolaclipse or the dawn of The eternal whatever is one of the best King Gizzard albums ever
lmao
Aaaaaaaaaand the title is outdated 😂
petro is a 10 >:(

Kyle only listen to gizaedh
