- Hello again!! Here is my build of Revell's 1:144 scale Saturn V Rocket. As much as I love Revell kits, I think that this one, as with their Ghost Pirate Ship, should have been discontinued a while ago. Compared to releases now (even their own recent releases) this kit is showing it's age, and to say the fit is horrendous is an understatement.
The kit is covered in flash, which for any modeller shouldn't be that much of a problem to deal with, however the instructions can be vague at times, but the main issue are the diabolical seams and the step you have to deal with, especially on the main body of the first and second stages. This will test both your skills with a sanding stick and your patience!! The main docking ring holding the first and second stages together was so tight I had to spend a good 40 minutes working on it to get it to fit into place.
Having said that, you can get a decent representation out of this kit, but it makes you work for it. Anyone coming along thinking it's just gluing together a couple of tubes and slapping on some paint will be in for a shock, for a kit with only 82 parts, there is a hell of a lot of work you have to put into it. At first I thought the skill level 4 on the box was a bit high, but after completing it, I can definitely see why, this isn't one for beginners. I'd seriously think at looking for a different manufacturers version of this if you want a Saturn V for your collection, but if you like a challenge then this is the kit for you.

A nice job indeed. I remember I was about 14 or so I got for Christmas their original Saturn V in 1/96 scale- that model topped out at about 3 feet!
Thanks Michael, very much appreciated! yes, they re-released that model last year (but slapped a 'NEW' sticker on it, very naughty), I've seen videos on here of it, with the usual purists listing 563 reasons why it's inaccurate!! LOL!!

Yes, the foil on the LEM was a great idea! I've ordered this kit from Amazon and after watching a few videos on the building of Revell's 04909 kit, I had the idea of purchasing some of those large candy bars that have gold colored foil for the descent stage of the LEM. I hear the corrugated sections are vey difficult to mask as the paint bleeds into the valleys and doesn't look good. Overcoming that will be my next brainstorm!

Many thanks for the compliments, Yes, I'm my own worst critic!! LOL!! A tip I heard after I'd finished my model (typical! LOL!) when it came to masking the ribs, was to mask off the area, then paint over the edges with a couple of layers of white, this then helps seal the edge of the tape and minimises leakage when you paint the black parts. Hope this helps.
Wicked! This would look nice on the shelf next to my tiny Hubble.
It does make a very nice model, but the Revell one takes a lot of work to get rid of the seams.

I just got this kit this week. I will get at it soon. When done, I am going to make one of those cool Saturn V lamps with the LED blast and smoke effects. This model will serve the purpose just fines .

Nice job! I've got the Revell 1/96 Saturn V waiting for construction but I'm currently working on the Revell 1/48 Columbia & Eagle, and spent two days on the 17 parts that make up the Command Module. I kept thinking 'I wish Tamiya had produced this kit!' Sorting out the various issues I had with it took a fair amount of thinking but on the plus side, it's improved my skills. I'm going to try using gold leaf on the Lunar Module- I may well regret this decision.
Gotta love tamiyas brilliant moulding - their 1967 panther is better then airfix's new one.
@@marsbar7099 I've just today started on a Tamiya Jaguar Mk2- I built Heller's E-Type earlier this year and it was awful. Both cars have the same engine and the Tamiya one goes together perfectly and has more detail. The old saying about Tamiya is you open the box, pour in some glue, give it a shake and out pops a perfect model!

@@brucesharpe1079 I'd definitely give the old one a miss in favour of the new release. There are a ton of fit issues where the sanding stick and filler will be in use overtime!! It's an old kit, and it shows, but if you like a challenge it's a lot cheaper than the new issues.
I've just watched a video review of the 'New' Revell 1:96 scale Saturn V, and apparently they've done it again, they've re-boxed a really old kit, with all of it's errors, and slapped an £80 price tag on it. The chap in the video said he'd spent an extra £100+ on after market bits to get it as accurate as he could, which is a bit too rich for my wallet!! So again, buyer beware I think.

Great for being brush painted! Especially loved the foil on the LEM.
1 thing I noticed though; at 4:37 there is a tiny, tiny bit of a ridge on the lump for the fins, but still, great job!

Yes, the assembly is horrible. I was hoping that the Germans would have corrected/ thrown away the old junk / made new moldings when they purchased Revell. You did a nice job on painting. Especially for not having an airbrush. Tip: Paint the entire rocket white. Mask for the black markings, but FIRSTLY paint WHITE! This will seal the masking. Then paint the black! NO bleeds!!!!!! Cheers!
Totally agree, it's a bit of a mare this kit, and they're still selling it!!
Very nice job and attention to detail. The Monogram kit (which this is) reboxed by Revell may have some accuracy issues. But you have just reinforced that a clean build and attention to detail on the masking and painting can make it a great looking model.

Many thanks for watching and commenting!! Yep, there'll be plenty of filling and sanding if you kit is the same as mine!! LOL!! It makes a nice model, the only let down I think are the second stage engines, the bells glued onto a round disc, they look like an after-thought.

I'm going to use some of the sprue rods and just make up something thalooks like tubes and struts. Won't be accurate, but it'll look "comnected." I hope lol.

Great video! My 9yr old son and I just picked up this kit. For painting we have some acrylic paint lying around can i simply paint on the plastic without primer or base coat using small brush? This is actually our first attempt at assembling a Revell model kit.
Many thanks for watching and commenting Abe, very much appreciated. Although it's best to use a primer, you can use acrylic straight onto the plastic, just a couple of things to remember. Wash the parts in warm soapy water before you build to get rid of any grease. Then when painting, thin your acrylics with water (so it looks the consistency of milk), it's always best to do several thin layers than trying to do one thick one. Your first coat of paint will look terrible, but don't worry, a couple more thin coats will cover it. Also with it being a large area to paint, I'd get a flat wide brush, probably 1or 2 inch with soft bristles, better than struggling with a small one, which you can use for fine details. Hope this helps!!

It really helps, though, to prime the plastic first before using acrylic paints. They adhere better and look better. Also, the plastic will yellow with age (been there, done that!), so using a primer and painting all surfaces with their respective colors will make for a superior model.

Thank you Emanuele!! I usually spend a couple of hours a day on a kit, that way I don't get bored doing it, so it took me about 3 or 4 weeks from start to finish.
Hello, why do you use primer? is neccessary and is also using the revell paint okay?
I use primer for two reasons KV. The first is that it shows up any gaps that need filling as it gives you an idea how your final paint job will look, especially ones that aren't immediately apparent, and secondly it gives a sound base for your paint job afterwards, you'll find that you'll get a better finish. Yes, I've used Revell paints in the past and they're great.
Actually ... the lander is called : LM : Lunar module
How did you put the stickers on?

Hint: To make sure you don't get ''silvering'' underneath them, apply a gloss varnish to your model before applying them, then when they're dry coat with your usual matt or satin varnish to protect them.
Why did you choose to do the inside of the nozzles rust? I thought they didn't static fire the saturn v?

@@AdrianBowerProject The interior surfaces of the Saturn V adapters were painted with Zinc Chromate to retard rust in the moist, salty air of Cape Canaveral. The insides of the engines should be the same color as their outsides. All of the engines of the Saturn V were static tested (in a test stand) before being attached to their respective boosters. They were fitted with a protective red cover on the interior of the engines which was removed before stacking the stages together before launch.

Thanks for watching and commenting Sameer. You're going to need glue and the paints (white, black, silver, gold and green if you follow Revell's paint scheme. It tells you on the instructions) to do the kit, also varnish to seal in and protect your work, but that's optional. Hope this helps.

Adrian Bower Project : cool. Thanks for subbing. But I have zero content. I am planning on doing model tutorials once I’m all set up. I think I’ve got about $3000 invested in my model room so far. Airbrushes are cheap now, even good ones. When in was building 35+ year’s ago they were soooooo expensive, about $600. I just couldn’t afford one. Go for the Iwata.

What tape do you use for masking off sections ?
I use Tamiya tape, I find it's kinder to parts that have already been painted. Hope that helps.

I used white Humbrol acrylic from a spray can for the body, so much easier than hand painting, and Tamiya Acrylic paints for the smaller parts, you can find a Revell/Tamiya paint numbers conversion chart online to make sure you get the right colours.
@@AdrianBowerProject : I guess the paint costs more than the model itself. This is mainly why I stopped 1/32 planes, even small ones in reality, to build 1/72 and 1/48. I have this Saturn 5 for a while, thank you for this video, almost a tutorial. Cheers.

Who makes the best model kit of a Saturn V then?
Hmmm, good question. I think I'd have to scour the internet to find out which company does one, and then compare reviews. My brother did do the old Airfix one when I was a kid back in the 70's, but I couldn't honestly say if that kit was better than the Revell, because as Spike Milligan once said on Q9, the mists of time are too thick for filming tonight!! LOL!!

The Revell 1/96th scale model represents the Saturn V best, but remember that all but the Dragon kits were made from preliminary plans for the rocket. Even the paint patterns in the instructions are for that very first effort and do not reflect what was really used on manned flights. BTW, the second stage engines on the 1/144th scale Revell kit actually show the heat shield that was used on all flights, but they did not model the back part of the engines, just the nozzles!

LOL!! I realised!! Must admit, thought the colour choice in the instructions was a bit strange, but I went with it!!
One thing I don’t like about the kit is that the green and the red colors on some of the part of the actual vehicle it makes it disgusting
