@Gross Models, I built this kit in the mid-1980s and really enjoyed it. Thinking of getting another one even though my 69 year old eyes "ain't what they used to be". It definitely needs some aftermarket upgrades that weren't available then, but it's still a fine kit. Just takes a little work and some patience. Thank you for jogging my memory and giving me some inspiration! I almost forgot to mention that Educraft Diversions sells a crawler and launch tower for it that would make an extremely impressive display!
Thank you, if you still have the old one it would be interesting to see it compared to what you can do now!
I’ve never really got into upgrade parts, I see how they can add to a build but I quite like getting an end result that anyone can get from the same kit.
@@GrossModels, I can do a bit better now than I did then, but my skills pale in comparison to many other modelers. The old kit I had was lost in a move somewhere in a move long ago but I'm willing to try again. When I started building models around 1957 we had only tube plastic cement and didn't even know that decals stuck better to a painted surface than to bare plastic. Again, thanks for the videos!
I just finished building this kit a week ago. It was definitely one of the most satisfying models I made.
I’m glad you enjoyed it.
Thank you for making this video. I have been waiting for a while now to build my model and your video and instructions is what I have been waiting for.
George
Alberta, Canada eh
Glad to be of help!
Big rockets are cool. There's a museum in Huntsville AL that's got several rockets and a space shuttle on display. Drove by it a bunch of times but never got to go there. Not being able to stop dearing work hours is damn.
I’ve seen a couple, nothing huge!
That's gonna be a big rocket!!! DUH! Remember don't rush sprue goo. ;) :D :D
I may have rushed a bit on the second stage. ;-)
I have Dragons 1/72 scale Saturn V. Not build it yet . I have this to and airfix 1/144 Saturn V and many probes and gemini and mercury and many many more. I love space models . Voyager .
Hi i just finished printing a 50 inch Saturn V with lighted plume. I love the history of this Rocket. Great little kit. Get time check out my printed Saturn. I use PLA filament left a like and thank you
I’ll have a look, thanks. I do like the dio ideas.
Got this in my stash Chris....might dig it out...
It’s big. And not a great kit. But with some love I recon it will be a nice piece.
Here for 50th anniversary
Welcome! I did wonder a while back why this was getting more views, then I figured it out! 😃
Four-year-old video, but still relevant in this age of SLS & StarShip.
I built this model, but made it in the “launch” mode.
If it wasn’t needed to hold the parts together, or were not visible, they were left in the greeble box.
Dry-fitting seams for no gaps, &
Plenty of Tamiya thin made a solid base, and scrap strips with epoxy reinforced all the joins.
It’s one solid monolithic piece, and I don’t worry about it falling apart when I move it
Plenty of wet sanding
Two coats of white primer
One semi-gloss white coat
Semi-gloss black
Kit decals
All done with no hurry or obsession
Looks great
I love it
I will take a bit more care with my Bandai 1/72 Saturn, but I build for fun, pleasure and personal satisfaction, and an totally deaf to complaints that ‘There are only 33,456 rivets, not 33,457 like in the REAL one!!’
Too many modelers forget the ‘fun factor’
(Unless it’s your job to build accurate models)
Indeed. I never worry much about accuracy. As long as I like it, I’m happy.
WOW! I begged my dad to buy me this exact model when I was a youngster. Finally got one but ruined it with the paint job.
You can always strip it and try again!
Oh brotha, that was years ago. That one's long gone. But im in the process of watching the rest of your videos. Now I want to find another one and do it this way.
They were available pretty easily a couple of years ago. Hopefully you can find one!
@@GrossModels me too. Amazing work by the way.
Thank you.
Certain parts are green because the undercoat for aircraft/space frame aluminium has Zinc in it
Interesting. Thanks!
@@GrossModels You’re welcome. This is the colour but other makes are available VALLEJO
Model Air: Green Zinc Chromate
Code: VAL094
great modelling btw
Thanks!
Could you please let me know what enamel paint colours are needed to complete the model from parts 1 to 4? White, black, copper green, red and gun metal? I need more technical colour names
It was a while back I made this, unfortunately I don’t remember!
I didn’t worry too much about exact matches to references anyway, I just went for what I liked the look of.
Hi!! Please I have a question...do you wash the particulars use it?
Hi! I don’t find modern kits need washing before priming.
:)
can please have a list of all the materials you used that will really help thanks!
Nnspideywebnn100 sorry, I built this 2 years ago! I don’t recall anything special needed though.
What paint do you recommend?
I like Vallejo personally, but there are many brands and types. Try a few and see what you like!
what glue and applicator are you using?
It was a while ago, but I would expect its Tamiya extra thin. It comes in a bottle with a brush build into the lid and is great for most plastic kits.
I would love to see you put some sort of fuel into the stages and actually launch it
It would need some major redesign of materials first or it would just melt!
Yea true
A lot of my rockets were made of only paper and burned and I was super disappointed
I am building a Saturn V for a display case build. What are you using to weld the seams of your model? I would love to stay away from body putty filler if possible. Thank you
I just used Tamiya extra thin for the joins, on the particularly bad bits I used sprue goo.
@@GrossModels
would this be similar to Plastruct's Plastic Weld ?
I don’t know that. It’s simply made by adding empty sprues to a bottle of Tamiya Extra thin and letting them dissolve. You end up with a thick liquid plastic that can easily be applied to a gap, and sanded/ painted when it’s dry.
@@GrossModels well for crying out loud. It doesn't get any easier than that. Thank for the info. PS watched your videos on the Saturn V built. I'm working on one now. I was interested in the paint you used for the prime coat. Looks like I'll have to try that. This is my 4th build of the Saturn V and they second 1/144th scale . I did a Saturn V Revell years ago and was really pulling my hair out with the paint scheme.
More Sprue goo info, 20 mins into this video Foxx gives a better explanation than I can. ruclips.net/video/E2zJjyy1J44/видео.html
The black and white paint was all Ump primer. I didn’t bother with an actual top coat.
Good Videos well done, appreciate this was 2 years ago but I was looking to get this kit. Do you think it would still look good if it was done with a brush cause I don't have an airbrush?
Thanks for noticing the date, you’d be surprised how many people ask “what paints did you use” on a 3 year old video. :-)
It would certainly be possible to brush paint, but it is quite large. You might be better off with spray cans for the priming and base colours?
@@GrossModels 😂, Thanks for that I didn't actually know you got spray cans but I think that's what I will do for the base colours and primers 👍👍
Tamiya make some, as do citadel. :-) make sure you are well ventilated for cans, best to be outside and using a mask just to be sure.
Good luck!
@@GrossModels Thanks 👍👍
I've just bought this model. Which glue/cement would you recommend?
I use Tamiya cement, either the regular or the extra thin depending on need.
@@GrossModels does it need any tools
Basic modelling tools, something to cut with, something to sand with, something to paint with.
@@GrossModels so basicly no but yes
No more than any model kit. :-)
Does it come with glue and paint?
Vicious Gamer not this version. There may be one that does.
so if i understand and saw it right, you first painted the whole first stage part white? I have the kit too, but im really confused about the painting. What parts needs to be white and when do you have to start with te black parts
Hi, you can just paint white where it needs to be, but it's much easier to just get it all white then paint black over where you need it black. You can't do it the other way, white will never cover black well, but black will still be black when painted over any colour!
@@GrossModels thanks for the tip! I have the original revel paint and i think i will follow your advise by first painting everythinh white! Did you actually paint it with the revell paint or did you do it with spray? Thx!
I actually just used white (and then black) primer paint, through an airbrush. If you’re using brushes, make sure your paint is nicely thinned.
@@GrossModels okay thanks im gonna try my best, dont have an airbrush unfortunately, only pensels and paint from revell. Never do this, so i will see what i can do 😅. Thanks for your advice!
Happy to help. If you have Facebook, join my group, people are happy to help and you can share pictures of your builds! Facebook.com/groups/GrossGroup
Looks like the main body halves are screaming for Foxx's sprue goo glue. Why didn't Revell hide the seams along side the rails that travel the length of the body? I wish Bandai made real space craft kits like this.
Yep. Seems stupid to have a custom place to hide them, and not use it.
Sprugoo worked, I’m just too impatient to do multiple times!
… And not a wheelhouse.… or Azimuth Stern Drive in sight 😂
A severe case of flash on the sprues..… Hmmmm.… I must have missed that ....NOT!
Hope the sproo goo and white primer work out.
A great start. 👍👍
A change of microphone at around 10 min in?? Slightly quieter and slightly less clear than the first 10min. Still perfectly audible though. 👍
Thanks. I did have some sound issues in this episode, the same mic, but perhaps in a different place. I tried to balance it in the edit but didn’t quite get it right!
Gross Models No worries, Chris. As I said still perfectly audible & audio level OK.
No rivet counting or criticism (constructive ... OR otherwise) intended. Merely a (hopefully !!) helpful observation... just in case you weren't aware.
Onwards.... to the heavens. Well, OK.... onto Stage 2 at least 😀
Always appreciated. :-)
Gross Models Likewise, back at you. 👍👍
Any particular reason why it needs to be primed white on areas which will remain white?
It's usually best to paint a model than leave it in the base plastic colour. But of course you can make and paint a kit however you like!
@@GrossModels Makes perfect sense. Thanks for your insight. BTW, your videos are very well made. Good instructions. The included instructions were a little confusing. Your videos clarify the build process. I appreciate your time and effort. At 68, it’s been more than 50 years since I built a model. I’ve forgotten quite a bit about it. Good memories are coming back.
@@Buddygold9509 thanks. I’m glad I can help out!
Hi Chris, have you done the Revell 1/8 Astronaut on the Moon kit? I've just opened it and it looks an absolute dog of a kit :/
I could have guessed that when you said Revell. :-)
I happily haven’t tried that one, and have no plans to. Good luck!
@@GrossModels are they always this bad??! The Saturn V wasn't 'THAT' bad but the seam joins on this figure are just appalling!
Not always. Just mostly. Usually lots of flash and work required to get parts together well.
But, after you work and make it look better you’ll be happier about the build!
The flash isn't too bad, there's just huge gaps in places. Think sprue goo and filler might be the way forward with this one!
The top of the fuel tank is yellow, not green. The F1 engines, the engine bells and the base are a steel/aluminium colour and I don’t know why Revell suggested these colours as there completely wrong.
I thought I’d seen some reference with it green? But either way I don’t mind. I never go for fully accurate, just what looks right/ good.
@@GrossModels I’m building the same kit as the one you and apart from Revell’s weird colour scheme, which isn’t your doing, I found the video very informative and a great help.
The nozzles on the flight vehicles were covered in thermal cladding so they never actually looked like they are in the kit anyway.
I guess you can consider it an opportunity to scratch build!
They where orange due to the fuel tanks being pre colored like that so instead of painting it NASA left it orange to save money and weight
How tall is it when it’s finished
I don’t have it to hand at the moment, but it’s around 2 1/2- 3 foot tall.
What if my parents cant build it?!
Build it yourself!
It's funny that our smart phones have more processing power then that rocket did lol
It really is. I think phones now have more power than the whole launch room!
@@GrossModels The most important thing - the rocket - is still more powerful than anything we've built since.
@@largesatsuma SLS and BFR might have something to say about that ;)
Phil McKibben but those are not build jet.
😂
The seams and the moulded-on stringers look really bad on the kit (that's not a criticism of your assembly work). The Airfix Saturn V from about the same time, had (has) the same problems.
It is quite an old tooling, but I don't think there is a newer one.
You dont need to sand it
Anytime you have a seam it's best to sand to ensure the edges are a good fit.
@@GrossModels how do i get the ring on the 1 stage it doesnt want to go on for
Me
@@darkmagicc2049 sorry, it’s been ages since I did this video. I don’t remember any particular problems though. Make sure the tube sections are fitted together well, you may need to do some sanding! ;-)
@@GrossModels also in the instructions is says to use tape why do i need that
@@darkmagicc2049 Either for holding parts together while the glue sets, or for masking off areas to paint.
you are not supposed to use the thin Tamina glue like this
I forget exactly what I used it for, I assume gluing plastic together? What did I do wrong?
Can’t wait to see what other way you’re supposed to use it.
@@GrossModels
you did spread the glue onto the area prior putting them together.. You can do this with the traditional glue "Revell contact" or "Mr. Cement". But with the Tamina extra thin you don't need to hassle. just hold the pieces totogether and put a couple of drops on top of the gap. thats the beauty of this glue. it doesn't leave any residue
The Extra thin Tamina glue uses the capillary action to seep between minute creases and gaps.
you just hold the pieces together and then you put a couple of drops on top of the gap. You will see that the glue will travel along the gap by itself.
Ohh, right.
Yes, capillary action is lovely with XT, but it sometimes doesn’t get in deep enough to give good hold on larger pieces. I find its better to use a little more and be sure of its adhesion than use a little and hope.
Thanks for the comments.
The rotating logo is _very_ annoying.
Thanks for the input. You are the first to say that though.
@@GrossModels It draws a lot of attention from the otherwise good video. That's how our brain works. Thanks for the video BTW.
@@wzzo2007 Thanks. I shall consider doing something about it.
