2014's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was an effort from Paramount and Michael Bay to recapture the financial success of the Transformers franchise. Unfortunately it didn't exactly go as planned. The movie was pretty bad and forgettable to the point where the better sequel flopped at the box office badly and thus the franchise was buried before it even fully began. In today's Anatomy of a Failure, lets look at TMNT to see the pitfalls of starting a new blockbuster franchise.

Paramount Pictures and Michael Bay present this reboot of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise with Wrath of the Titans' helmer Jonathan Liebesman directing. @@minhtran7431 Well, suggestion/proposal is one thing, and that being helpful/correct is another, what matters is you try to give a creative feedback, results are always up to the viewer's preferences whether their perception and opinion is recognized and accepted generally by the mass audience or not
@@minhtran7431 What Joshua said. Plus, there's still that one hurdle called "execution". Just because you're theoretically doing the right thing, doesn't mean you're doing it the right way.
This movie really shows its weaknesses when compared directly to the original TMNT movie. I showed my niece that movie and her mind was blown by stuntguys doing real choreographed fight scenes while wearing realistic giant turtle suits with animatronic heads. That's not all though, the character motivations, threat levels of the villain, and writing are done to perfection. The filmmakers take the subject matter with this seriousness that isn't condescending to the target demographic of children, they wait for Vanilla Ice in TMNT 2: Secret of the Ooze to do that. The movie is dark without being grimdark. The revelation of the turtles is worthy of NINJAS. Shredder's method of building a ninja army through recruiting abandoned kids is perfect. His motivation isn't poisoning the city with mutagenic gas, he wants to be the top dog gangster of a rich and powerful city, and he gets a kick out of corrupting disaffected youth. The movie even gets Casey Jones right, and April is perfectly balanced.
I cannot praise the 1990 movie enough, it was basically perfect. Aside from obvious early 90s things it could still do amazing if it was released today.

It's an untouched classic for a reason. They got everything mostly right, and it stands the test of time. I recently re-watched it and just felt, that awe as a child return, along with the appreciation as an adult for how they made such a glorious film.
exactly @Mario...the original was a masterpiece with respect to being faithful to the cartoon and the original comic art, art direction, casting was taken seriously and as you stated, the dark, somewhat mature tone of it was precise. Sadly I don't think hollywood'' has the scruples, balls and ability to go with that winning formula again. Let's just sit back and watch the trainwreck reboots
The worst part is that they had so much source material.
From the original comics, 📖 to the first show, 📺 to 2003, 2012, each series had something that the movies could’ve learned from & used.
Literally every suggestion you made to make this movie better was done in each and every other one of the Turtle’s 🐢 incarnation, and you had the *blueprint for a franchise in the palm of your hand,* and they still blew 💥 it.
In fairness, I still like both flicks and think they’re dumb fun…. but it just *reeks* of wasted potential.
Having lots of source material is definitely not a guarantee for a good movie. Coughstarwarscough

The worst part is that Megan Fox is nowhere near as bangable as she was when Transformers was made. Lazy, to rely on a woman of modest thespian abilities who peaked FIFTEEN years ago.

@@madcap3450 they could’ve just adopted the heir to the empire trilogy into the sequel trilogy and it would’ve been infinitely better. But they instead insisted on doing their own story without putting in any of the character development or world consistency you’d expect in other Star Wars properties. It’s like the 2016 berserk anime of the Star Wars franchise.
I don't know if you did this on purpose or not, but your examples of how to introduce the characters and the setting is almost a spot on recreation of how it happened in the original film.

Funny you bring that up, because the first movie's introduction of the turtles was a recreation of how they were introduced in the original cartoon. I think that was more specifically what he was alluding to.

That was the first thing I noticed too when he started pitching his own ideas for how it should have gone, honestly I'm shocked that he made more comparisons to Bayformers than that (but I also get why since this movie was trying so damn hard to be Bayformers). Part of me is actually glad he didn't just compare it to the 90 movie the whole time because I hate videos that are essentially just "it isn't [old thing], so it bad by comparison".

It’s sad when the 1993 TMNT movie for younger audiences did better at introducing the characters.
The 90s TMNT movie is way more mature-feeling than this one.

I was so sad when these movies flopped, i feel like if done differently, this could've been pretty big and interesting, i like TMNT, and for the first time ever, seeing an animation being adapted into Live action, to me at least, didn't instantly trigger Cringe, at least cartoon human looking characters, i kinda liked the way these guys looked, very badass and cool.
No, it's good they flopped, because it shows that the fans will not take that kind of garbage for granted. The turtles redesign was awful and very uncanny valley, the humor was terrible and the story ultimately had no heart whatsoever. Compare that film with the original 1990 live action film and the difference in tone is gigantic.

The original movie isn’t “cringe” at all. It holds up perfectly.
TMNT is certainly one of the movies ever made. The turtles are acting and the plot is present. The costumes are in it and the script was somehow pitched and written by THE screenwriter. The director is absolutely a director and the visual effects are probably one of the visual effects ever made. It’s certainly a movie that was made with motion pictures. I’ll rate it a /10

When I was 8, me and my grandmother went to see this movie in theaters, I only remember one thing when I was there. The scene were Raph kicks shredder off the building and said “cowabunga”, the people in their seats were cheering and clapping, that was a nice memory.
The elevator scene is the one scene I really like. Shame it was so short.
Alternatively, the 2003 animated series has an opening that would work well on film. we start with a day in the life of the turtles, when robots suddenly break into their home and seemingly everywhere else in the sewers. This forces them into the surface world, and from there we can either follow up on Baxter Stockman, which would have made for a better first villain, or get them tangled up with the Foot, and leave the robots as a future plothook to follow up on. This opening has the benefit of making the TMNT the main characters, rather than the human sidecharacter.
Not only that, but from the first FIVE MINUTES we understand at least the BASICS of each brother's personality. Michelangelo is impulsive, pretty chill, and the youngest. Splinter saying he's clumsy implies a lack of focus during training. Donatello quiet, pragmatic the middle kid. Splinter saying he's too noisy implies that he isn't as skilled as the others at being quiet like a ninja should. Makes sense sense he's often in his lab. Raphael, stubborn and hotheaded the second eldest. Splinter saying in just this SUCH dad tone "poor choice Raphael." shows that Raph often seems to make decisions based on anger instincts, rather than thinking it through, like trying to slice the candle with his sai. Leonardo calm and logical, the leader. The only one able to get the candle from Splinter. And the one trying to reign in his brothers when they have to go to the surface "we're only going up to go DOWN the NEXT manhole cover." yeah that goes well lol.
We see that Leo and Raph butt heads "Teacher's pet" Raph sneers, "Ninja dropout." Leo retorts. Followed by Mike and Don in the background going "ohhhOHHHH." clearly enjoying the free entertainment of "Gee a fight between Leo and Raph?" "Oh, I didn't see THAT coming" the young siblings are so used to it, they quip about it in later episodes.
The first 5 minutes of the show is great cause it introduces you to each brother, and later on as the show progresses, we get to the solo episodes that dives more into the complexity of each turtle.It's brilliant storytelling, because it sets you up to think "oh well Raphael is ALWAYS the hothead, he just shoves his emotions aside, emotional range of a teaspoon." then the show hits you with SEVERAL instances of Raph nearly breaking down. Or Donatello is shown to be quite a capable fighter, Mikey is able to see the seriousness of certain situations, and even Leonardo isn't perfect. Leo's depression arc in season 4 is just truly outstanding writing. "I did THE BEST. I COULD!" still gives me chills.

@@reallyhimongod that's not the point he's trying to make. They're simply saying that the plot of the first episode, has a way to be translated over to film rather than the plot of the film itself. How they meet April in the 03 series even makes more sense than in the Bay movie. It all just feels more natural for the moments to progress as they do in the 03 first episode, than the film.
the 03 turtles is really the best iteration there is. It balanced humor and darker tones really well. Same as it Never Was is one of my all time favorite cartoon episodes.

Your way of opening TMNT was how the original live action film did it. And that was classic
I love how every one of the tips made to make this a better movie/franchise was basically: Make it like the one from the 90s. April investigates, gets caught up with shady criminals, and gets saved. Ralph goes out on his own so his threat to leave makes sense. Show a sense of brotherhood among the heroes in a significant way
Ninja turtles was MY LIFE as a kid. That being said, I couldn't even make it through these movies
Same I walked out of the first remake. Mind you I was such a TMNT fan. My mom, who was a broke college student at the time. Got me preview tickets to the first movie. I will never forget the tickets had the turtles printed on them. I'm 40 and to this day that's my favorite childhood memory. That and the Christmas I got a Nintendo. 😢😢😢 I gotta go call my mom now😭

So basically, your setup for the story's beginning is a rework of the original TMNT film...Cuz in that one, April tracks the Foot, gets caught and a disguised Raphael saves her. He loses one of his Sai during the fight, she picks it up and investigates further...
I appreciate how you give an alternative plot when criticizing. Anyone can say, ‘that plot was bad,’ but not a lot of people can explain why and how it could be fixed. Keep up the great content!
what's funny about your idea of Raph going solo and getting everyone in trouble is that it's sorta similar to something that happens in the 2007 movie and that aspect is done way better there from what I remember
Shredder was the biggest disappointment of the entire film. I remember how bad ass he was as a character in the animated shows but than he was was just a character that had no motivations and the worst introductive scene in the film
I once took part in an "Iron Man" tournament where we had to stay up for 3 days straight to win a prize. I made it to the last night but made the mistake of watching the live action Ninja Turtles & fell asleep
What I love about the TMNT franchise is there's something for everyone. 80s Turtles is kinda silly. Not just funny but goofy. It didn't take itself so seriously. The 03 Turtles (MY boys) are serious and stick close enough to the comics apparently even taking stills STRAIGHT from the comics to the show. What I really like about the 03 show is that it gives you some one on one time with each brother to get to know them on a personal level. There are solo episodes for Don, Leo, Raph and Mike. That's nice. The brothers there are a tight knit family (which is something that always bothered me about rise despite how much I love it. The brothers there don't FEEL really close like they should be.).
2012 Turtles has a good mix of serious and humorous elements. Mikey isn't the only one who gets to be a kid there. Even Leo nerds out over things. And the brothers actually treat Mikey as a little brother there; even when his arm is broken Leo asks first about Mikey, and Raph AND Leo are uber protective of him. Don and Mikey get some fun younger sibling moments too.
The Bay Turtles even has some fun moments in it, and Shell Shocked IS a good song to nod your head to. There are people who do enjoy these movies, and I can definitely see why. Some of the action set pieces are just incredible to watch, and it's nice to see the brothers have actual GOOD character designs, vs just being different shades of green like in the 03 version, though I do get why you'd do that, to save time on animating.
Then Rise of the TMNT is just BALLS. TO THE WALL. COMEDY. And NOT JUST comedy, but heartfelt moments as well. And there are so many funny moments but I think my all time favorite moment is "look over there PUSH!" cause Donnie is absoLUTELY radiating middle child energy for once. The shift in dynamics was interesting too; it's weird but interesting to see Leo not only be NOT the leader, but the third youngest cause it goes Raph, Don, Leo, Mikey. Something I hope that continues is that they keep making the brothers look distinct. Because I really loved that about this show. Each brother being a different turtle species was a great idea.
And apparently the new IDW comics are amazing. Haven't touched them but everyone talks how it's the best version

I think it's a 2nd best to 2003 being 1st in darkest version/adapation especially because of what goes on with Baxter Stockman in that with the mutilation going on increasing throughout it and even the episode Insane in the Membrane got banned. I know that even the creators of TMNT said they much preferred it over the 1st animated series in being closest to what they envisioned.
The IDW comics are pretty damn good too.
@@SonicLegends The 2003 series goes hard fr, Insane in the Membrane is such a rough episode, I love it so much. Same as it Never Was is also notably horrifying, and pretty much anything Agent Bishop was involved in got very dark. I owe that series for my taste in storytelling!

I don't know WHAT you are talking about. The Ninja Turtles movie was made in 1990 and it was wicked cool.
The 2014 movie is ok for what it is.
But in terms of live action movies, the 1990 adaptation is still supreme. It introduces the elements gradually rather than all at once via Tony Shalhoub.

The ironic thing about this film is that even tho Michael Bay produced it, it's almost like all the key scenes are somehow opposite of Michael Bay's filmmaking style, which is usually far from boring.

It's so sad these movies flopped. They could have been so much more. I do would love to know your opinion on the rottmnt movie that came out 5 days ago. Because the rise version is very different compared to the previous versions (I find it actually a very refreshing take on the turtles)

The Rise movie is such a banger fr. The Rise universe as a whole is such a great and refreshing spin on the tried and true formula, I'm convinced there were at least a few 2k3 fans in that team
I remember being psyched when this movie was announced. I was even excited for Megan Fox as April O'Neil. And then it came out and I was more disappointed then when I saw Jonah Hex. Man, does Megan Fox gets objectified in clunkers.

Honestly, this is my guilty pleasure thing. Jokes are not bad, some action scenes were creative, especially snowy mountain chase scene. It's a good popcorn movie for me.
Yeah, I watched this in IMAX when I was 8, at the very least I enjoyed every single minute of it. The MC Mikey one was still hilarious for me, it fits Mikey's personality perfectly. Eventhough the story was a bit off, atleast they got the turtle's personality very right

I remember watching these movies in theaters. If Michael Bay had taken a different approach to the TMNT movies, I can promise that they would have skyrocketed to success. Man, he should've gone back to the drawing board.
The first one did well enough to get a sequel though the second one was the one that flopped.

It's amazing. TMNT started as a parody of Daredevil (absurd martial artists, the Hand gang becomes the Foot gang, etc.) but within a few years became so much more popular that it became and remained one of the biggest permanent franchises for decades. And yet with just a brief few films, this moronic set-up managed to tank the entire franchise at the exact moment a pretty solid series revived the Daredevil brand - if Marvel had been in a position to capitalise, they could have recaptured the lead again.

I remember watching the two ninja turtles movies in theaters. They weren't really anything special, i thought they were just some good old fashioned dumb fun. The kind of movies where you can just turn off your brain and enjoy the pretty colors on screen.

After Multiverse of Madness, I've come to the conclusion that "movies that are just dumb fun, turn off your brain and watch it" are bad movies, but with people fond of them.

My favorite part in all these videos is when you are describing how the scene should have gone, over a scene from the movie that clearly shows they had the footage to do it right and still chose to screw everything up.
The way you seamlessly tie your sponsor segment into the rest of the video goes to show how good of a writer you are. It's pure gold!
One of the sad truths to fans about this duology is the fact it will be what makes general audiences, myself included familiar about the ninja turtles and the massive franchise it is. That said though, the action sequences in these movies are insanely top notch that they might as well reached marvel movie action level.

I made the terrible mistake of watching this while eating. Your use of sound effects and that 20th Century Fox theme is so on point it was constantly triggering my laugh every 10 seconds, nearly covering my screen in broccoli.

One theory suggests that Eric Sacks was actually Shredder that’s pretty convincing. Kind of wish they went with that idea.
He was going to be Shredder. They did reshoots and dubbing to change it after fan backlash for not having him be Japanese.

He was supposed to be the shredder but got back lash by the fans so they inserted some random Japanese guy at the end.
Sacks could of been the shredder had they said he grew up in Japan and it's culture...such an easy fix.
@@YunethAlwis honestly, the movie has so many other issues that I don’t care either way. It’s cool if some people enjoyed it, but to me it was one of the worst written movies I’ve ever seen. I flat out hated it 😂

Filmento, your movie analyzes are some of the funniest up there with red letter media. And for whatever reason, I love the noise you play when people are dumping exposition or yada yadaing dialogue.
I remember back in the OG movie Raph meets April first & fought with Casey Jones cause he was always running off on his own being a bad ass. He's a loner and Raph has always been my fav out of all of them.
I don't know what Meme Academy Filmento went to, but he clearly graduated with Dankest Honors
It amazes me how many adaptations miss the mark, like they had all the pieces and it could've been so good but somehow always end up floating in the cold heart of space.
The original one from the 90s got it right.

Great video, really helped me understand why the movie wasn't a bigger thing. I'm really looking forward to your video on Thor: Love and Thunder, which I personally didn't think was as good as it could have been. Too much humour which overshadowed any serious elements, not enough exploration of character in the villain and the theme wasn't explored anywhere near as much as it should have been. Also the choices they made for the story arcs of both Jane and Thor were terrible. Thor's power level in the movie made no sense too, but that's more Marvel nerd stuff rather than film nerd stuff
The way he promotes an ad using TMNT is probably a big brain move.
I actually liked the first transformers movie so this was a big disappointment for me.
DAVE GREEN had a lot more passion directing OUT OF THE SHADOWS than Jonathan Liebesman, who was just doing what he was paid to do, nothing more

Im old enough to remember the old ninja turtles movie…where they were first shown as anti-heroes then , through april oniell interacting with them, we see they are not “bad guys”…then a natural progression of explaining how they became anthropromorphids

I remember not liking the shape of the turtles heads. And it was enough for me to pass. To me this is what would have happened to the original Sonic movie without the reworks, basically.
I can't bring a more insightful opinion than what's already said in the comments, from pointing out that Filmento's suggestion for improving it is just describing the 1990 movie to a tee and how baffling it is to fuck up something with literal DECADES of source material, so I'll simply say one thing... That ad transition at the end was smooth as heck.
It’s actually insane how this movie and the 2010s version of the TMNT show came out during the same time, yet the friggin cartoon show had more depth and was often way darker than this actual PG-13 movie that is supposed to be more “mature” but instead ended up feeling even more cartoony than the ACTUAL cartoon that was on TV at around the same time.
We love our villains with their own nice character development. Take Thanos for example or maybe Ultron. They're not just bad for the sake of having a villain in the movie. If you spend a little bit of time and respect on them, their plans actually does make some sense. Thanos wants half the population to give more worth to the resources. Ultron wants to speed up the extinction of humans because well, were already on our way to do that. His plan is just less painful and what they call lesser of the two evil. Immediate death instead of living on a Nuclear Winter world.
The second movie was so much better that it made me forget how bad the first one was

Also, the CGI characters are just super unappealing to look at. Their misshapen heads, tiny eyes, huge mouths and detailed skin is really gross to look at. I think that adds to the general disengagement and disinterest in the TMNT. How are you supposed to care about your main characters if they are flatly characterized, apathetic introduced, and have no appeal in their design?

I just couldn't ever get over the 8 foot tall, 400lb version of the turtles, they range from like 4 foot 7 up to 5 foot 5 in the comics, original movies and cartoon.

My main issues with the film were that Splinter mastered Ninjutsu from a book / Shredder had blades all over him but somehow avoids making anyone bleed in battle.
The new TMNT movie is WAY better!! Everyone should check out Rise of the TMNT, super refreshing take on the turtles and crisp animation. Every fight looks like anime
The crazy thing is, they originally wanted this to be an alien invasion movie, with the Turtles being four alien soldiers who switch sides after seeing how awesome Earth is. Then some of the script was leaked online and the fans were furious, so they had to rewrite.
