Perhaps it was that he saw my spirit leap from within. Thus I gave myself away. I was 14 when I delivered 'scription's for Chapman's Pharmacy throughout the North End of Winnipeg. From Lawrence Gowan's 1983 album "Strange Animal". Gowan is a classically-trained pianist (the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto). This cut clearly showcases his songwriting brilliance, and at the time was nothing short of a technical masterpiece. The video for "Criminal Mind" also received regular airplay on both MuchMusic and MTV, and was rewarded with numerous awards for the marriage of animation with live footage. Great sound on this live version - thanks for the post!
I loved Gowan's original version of this song, but this was absolutely amazing!! I love how Tommy and JY were so into it, and Gowan truly gave me shivers. Awesome that they are doing his previous material along with their own.
Why are they idiots just because they may not know as much about Larry's past as you do? All that matters is that he and the rest of Styx do a great job here.... I love the key change for the guitar solo, which is not part of the original song. This is one of those cases where a live performance eclipses the studio version thanks to modern live sound technology, better effects, and a killer band.
I've heard both Gowan's original, and with Styx, and this is so much better. Has the ominous feel that it should have with Styx. Didn't have that quality on Gowan's solo album.
Taking it easy on this wonderful Monday afternoon listening to some oldies and came across Criminal Minds by Gowan. One of my favorite tunes by Gowan, I remember seeing him for the first time in Mel Lastman square, the year was 1996. OMG as soon as he played the first few bars on his baby grand with chandelier lit with candles, I fell in love.. After his show, I went up to him and asked him to sign my t-shirt, he turned me around and signed it dedicated to a criminal mind. I asked him, how did he know this? He replied, I just know, and winked at me. True story. LOL
That is why Gowan takes Todd with him when he does his Canadian Mini-Tours while on hiatus. One night in a small 400 seater Todd ripped off a 8 minute solo, that had not only the audience but the band just in awe. Standing ovation from minute one and Gowan and the band just backed off the side of the stage and let him go. Was marvelous to see.
I used to absolutely love this song back in the days... As a kid, it was my favorite for a long time. This version is different, as it got rid of the 80s tacky taste (which was fun back in the days, but didn't age all that well) and made it a serious, great sounding song. And hell, Gowan can sing! I had the same shivers I had when I was 7 years old and I heard this song for the first time. Styx took the original material and made it a classic. Loved it all.

Marko Petkov wish I could give you 100 thumbs up...no auto tune, no lip syncing, no effects, just great musicians and great vocalists...... People like Brittany Spears should watch videos like this and see what a real performer is like......
+michael C too many performers now focus on the wrong parts of the performance, trying to look or appear hoping the stage effects or their cloths will make the show, instead of making their music the best it could be, and then you have other artists who will remain nameless who simply try BS for the sake of Shock hoping it will make that 15 minutes last that much longer,
And that's the beauty of Lawrence. He isn't trying to be Dennis in any way. He sings the songs, but still manages to puts his own "mark" in there. And continues to be himself in the process...🎶🎹🎤

I stand acuse before you.... and I Have no tears to cry,... You will never break me ... T'ill the day I die! I'm Criminal Mind!
Amazing live performance. So badly lacking from today's musicians (or performers).
Marko Petkov wish I could give you 100 thumbs up...no auto tune, no lip syncing, no effects, just great musicians and great vocalists......
People like Brittany Spears should watch videos like this and see what a real performer is like......
+michael C too many performers now focus on the wrong parts of the performance, trying to look or appear hoping the stage effects or their cloths will make the show, instead of making their music the best it could be, and then you have other artists who will remain nameless who simply try BS for the sake of Shock hoping it will make that 15 minutes last that much longer,
NecroTemplar 10 thumbs up for you!
one of my all time favorite rock song.
Gowan was the closest you will ever get to DDY without actually being him, while having his own style and identity at the same time.
And without the desire to play the Roger Waters, let alone be a tyrant that insists on pop, ballads, and crummy love tunes.
And that's the beauty of Lawrence. He isn't trying to be Dennis in any way. He sings the songs, but still manages to puts his own "mark" in there. And continues to be himself in the process...🎶🎹🎤
Of course Even if he would want to, DDY has such a unique vocal signature. No one can be like him. So better be yourself.
@@tsitracommunications2884 Yes, well those type of crummy songs that you mentioned, are the reason they sold 4 back to back to back to back Gold records and had multiple hit songs. I saw them in 83 they were much better then, then now that's for sure!!
That old excuse. Just another Dennis lover, shame on you :(
Larry Gowan proud Canadian
Great voice
