- Hades is the next big thing from Supergiant. From what I've played so far, I think it's pretty clear that these guys are once again on track to deliver.
No surprises there.

Id like you to review furi. Its on sale on steam until jan 3 as well i believe.
I heard a "it just works" in there fallowed by the one negative thing about combat, the yellow bars. I just thought that was funny.
Hey, at certain points during the video you have random flashes to other scenes that is really jarring to the viewer. Not sure if you know this. Other than that, great review.
Sorry man, but i'm not going to set up 15 accounts, just because now everybody and their grandmother think they can make their own online game platform. Yes, it's a good game, but i'm not going to support this behaviour
Hey Skill Up can u please try out thronebreaker? It's the best game I have played this year and it's really orverlooked and underrated.
CDPR has made another amazing game like the Witcher 3 and it seems like no one really cares.
Decided to stop by after the official 1.0 release. Its improved SO MUCH and is the best rogue like I've played since Binding of Isaac
Have yourself a very buggy christmas Ralph
Since you made this video I’ve been keeping my eye on this game.
I just bought the full version today, beat the first two bosses and this is possibly my favourite game of all time now
Thank you good sir
Hey Ralph, loved the vid. I'm not big on roguelikes, but there are some I really like (i.e. Binding of Isaac and Dead Cells), and wanted to ask you for your opinion on Isaac (if you've played it), and if I'd like Hades based on my feelings toward Hades.
I don’t know what it is but I just don’t like the feel of melee combat when the camera is so far away. It just feels like I’m trying to play a video game on a monitor while sitting at the other end of the room.
We're gonna buy this game because of Zagreus' voice.
Supergiant Games struck gold with their voice actors
That shield reminds me of Rygar on nes.
Looks so good cant wait for it to be on switch
If you die between two levels/stages, do you restart the last level/stage only or the whole game?
The whole game
Looks good. Happy holidays! uwu
Time for a re-review perhaps? :)
It's so nice to have such faith in a developer. I remember what that used to feel like :( %#$# blizzard.
"Everything just works" hmmmmm
I've loved Supergiant's games ever since TotalBiscuit introduced me to Bastion. The art style, gameplay, music (my god, the music), story telling, voice acting, world building...... Everything is about their games is excellent.
Why do you have the SkillUp profile picture to the right of your name?
@@RealMisterDoge I am sponsoring the channel with a monthly sub, the same as Twitch tvs system.
Neat
Good for you man
for me Bastion was only good game they brought out, i didn't like transistor to much it was "okay", i didn't bother with that battle simulator type game could be good but what i saw of game play it didn't felt like my cup of tea
Hades looks good just pissed its not coming to steam, i understand that its just another app, but that's problem why do i need another app to play same game on PC should of been available on steam as well.
No Sam singing?
D I S L I K E
Too clever there using TB's picture to sew up the "rogue-like" discussion, fond memories of him spending years and years arguing about what constitutes a proper Rogue imitator vs a "Rogue-lite" as he called the more modern genre
Rest in peace Total Biscuit 02:10.
I've cried on the day they've announced his passing. I don't cry often. He was an exemplary game critic and true giant of game journalism.
Rest in peace, TB. Hope you now can adjust all the FOV sliders.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe in the FAQ for the game it is stated that only Early Access is exclusive to Epic's Store. The full game will release on Steam as well.
I just noticed that as well. What a shame really, this way Steam users cannot wishlist the game yet. Guess they don't care about sales that much.
@@arnerademacker8548 who cares its better to wait for the game, then just keep testing builds you're paying to beta test for them which is bullshit
@@kyotheman69 I never recommended purchasing the game in early access. But a lot of people (me included) use the Steam wishlist to keep track of games they're interested in. Not being able to add this to my wishlist means I probably will have forgotten about it by the time it comes out and subsequently not purchase it. Not to mention that a decent margin of people buy games from other people's wishlist as a gift.
Update: I just picked up an EA copy of this game on Steam.
Don't diss the bow, the bow is amazing, but requires a different playstyle to the melee weapons (although you can specialize in close range bow attacks if you're feeling daring). Dash + Power shot is amazing once you get the timing down. And you have to be parsimonious about using Special because it leaves you rooted in place for a second. I do love that all the weapons are, as you said, viable - I've beaten the final boss at least once with every weapon.
I'm seriously glad you did a review of this game, especially when I'm a huge fan of Supergiant. I definitely do not like the idea of them only having the game in early access and available only on the Epic Game store, but at the same time, I kinda understand on their decision to do so. I just kinda wish they brought the same voice actor for Bastion and Transistor into this game - but that's just me being biased.
It think early access is a good idea for a roguelike, it fits with how the genre works, slowly uncovering more as the game is updated.
Being exclusive to one launcher isn't that big of a deal. They say it'll be on other platforms after release (read: it'll wind up on steam), and Epic gives Supergiant a better cut of the profits, which is a good thing.
So unless you're sold on playing an early access roguelike you can just wait for the full release and it wont matter. (Especially considering Supergiant released a game last year, and previously it was a few years between each release.)
You mean Logan Cunningham? He's in Hades :) he plays multiple characters. Check the credits!
Honestly I can’t blame them for making it exclusive on Epic’s store. Not only does it give them a larger cut of their sales(meaning selling their game elsewhere would make them lose money), but the more successful games that become exclusive on Epic’s store the sooner Steam will have to adapt and improve in order to convince those developers to come back.
@@trevordavis6830 Nah they just fuck the consumer by giving them no choice except use an inferior platform because they aren't sure their shit game will sell well.
@@CeleryMan666 1) There is literally no difference between playing a game bought off of Steam and the Epic store. While Epic doesn't offer as many consumer friendly features as Steam does, they still cost the same to buy and play exactly the same. So at most, it's a minor annoyance.
2) The only way to get Valve to improve Steam is to hurt their revenue. And the only way to do that is by doing stuff like this.
3) If you were selling a product, why on Earth would you sell it at a store that's going to take a lot bigger chunk of your money than another store? You're literally purposefully losing money at that point.
4) The developers of Hades have stated that the full game is coming to Steam still.
Transistor soundtrack always gives me chills.
SkillUp and Raycevick video on the same day? Am I in heaven right now :)
who's Raycvick?
Ralph would you do a review on Ashen ?
Working on it actually
Average at best. Just another Dark Souls clone. Not a bad game, but not great either.
Love Supergiant. Great music, great style and awesome to boot.
I’m getting to the point that if you say it’s good, but I don’t know anything else about, I’ll still buy it. Quit making me spend money.
Why dead cells? Not Enter the Gungeon or Binding of Isaac? Imho these games are a bit more similar
It looks fun! It looks hard, too. In all this footage you look like you're barely surviving!
I've been watching NoClip's documentary on the development process and it really seems like SuperGiant is doing early access _right_
Go check it out! The dev team is a really likeable little group of passionate folks.
Jesse H. The game is kinda easy and fun. It’s easier than dead cells for sure because it is in early state and devs have a lot to do with balancing things.
The player of the clip is bad so you are seeing low health all the time. Most players beat the game (as it is right now) easily
compared to dead cells this will be walk in the park
Thanks for addressing us actual roguelike fans, else I'd have raised my ASCII sword
Why is this genre popular?
I love the review and I am super happy that you chose to review this game as it gets better. The one thing that I have to disagree with is your comment about the yellow armored enemies and how they force you into ranged builds more to combat the lack of attack animation interrupts. I believe that instead of making you use the range more, it forces you to be more tactical with your positioning and effective use of dashes. Once you get to the point of having multiple dashes, the fight become less about who can hit each other from the farthest distance and more about how you are able to predict the enemy's movement and attacks to avoid them and strike them down. I would also like to point out that the armored enemies also, in addition to having super armor on attacks and a second, stronger health bar, they attack more often and, in the case of the mage, have a more powerful attack pattern. I have sunk over 50 hours into this game so far and beaten what is currently there 4 times, once with each weapon, and I have discovered a lot of cool tech options with the individual weapons. I hope that you see this comment and take note of it, and I also hope that you keep on making awesome content like this.
What’s the music at around 45 seconds in? It’s beautiful
We All Become, from Transistor
Typical supergiant games, the art style and music makes it look like the aegean sea, 2 hours in you'll realize it's as deep as a puddle. Is this a good game right now? Yes, it's good (if you're looking for a flash game). Is this worth $20? No.
I bought this game having only been mildy interested in Rogue likes - holy shit I am addicted to this game..Its so well done and just plain fun. Being on Epic Game store SHOULD NOT be a deterrent to playing this excellent game.
I usually hate bows, but man, that bow and poseidon boons netted me my first escape very easily.
It's insanely frustrating to me how happy you were to see a major company take on Steam and then immediately how against change you are if change requires the slightest ounce of inconvenience at all. The epic games store is not Ubisoft or EA's or Bethesda's launcher. It is a proper marketplace and competitor for steam. It can't drive Steam to be better if you are unwilling to click an icon on your desktop to shop there.
Darkest Dungeon brought roguelike to life to modern day gamers. NOT Dead Cells. Yup I'm "that guy" fight me
The soundtracks to Supergiant games are soooo good, I've listened to them more than most albums! I always have Bastion and Transistor soundtracks on loop while I paint.
You melt my heart with that image of TB laughing
The combat looks cool but it ain't no transistor as far as weapon design goes. Regardless, can't wait, instabuy.
Loving this game, and at such an early stage, puts many other "Early Access" games to shame, will be a game I easily check in with every patch and one that will only improve :3
I'm gonna trust your judgement Shillup, even though you like Destiny.
=P
meh, Its not like people don't have the epic launcher already because of fortshnite. I'd rather bash on epic to be pushed into polishing their launcher and service, instead of complaining of its existence. Who else could even stand up to steam's dominance. Even gog dose not have as far a reach on players as epic. Not saying steam is evil, but it needs REAL competition for the sake of players and developers.
Are you considering doing an updated video now that it's out of early access?
transistor was phenomenal! only video game soundtrack i've ever bought and i still get chills listening to it... but i couldn't get into pyre, so i was kinda resistant about hades. thanks for the preview!
will you ever do fury by any chance?
Merry Buggy Christmas Skill Up!
It's on Steam. Wonder if it's worth checking out.
“Why are we so cynical about bow stuff” because bows are similar to guns: far less interesting out of the box. Making ranged weapons interesting takes more creativity than melee weapons. Go too far, and it’s the best weapon in the game. Don’t go far enough, then it’s boring.
How about a review since the game has been launched now? :)
Transistor and Bastion are amazing, I have high hopes for these one. Hope it comes to PS4
Watched it, bought it. Would prefer to buy it on GOG but I want to play it noooooooowwwww.
Glad to see you acknowledge the only Robin Hood with a real English accent.
5:31 “Everything just works” confirmed Nvidia head?
Ralph, we all love your reviews, but I think it's time for you to STOP and spend some quality time with the family... NOW! XP
Btw Merry Christmas. :)
Its only Exclusive to Epic games for its early access, when the game is officially out it'll be on other gamesites like steam
the all "I would like this on steam rather than Epic Store" is a valid consumer point, but there is nothing to say about it, Epic store is better for developers and developers will support it. Supergiant will not lose millions just to have the game on Steam, a platform that is not working anymore as a showcase, but just a place for devs to put a digital copy on sale. Anyway, everybody always complained about Steam, now that a (curated) alternative comes out nobody likes it? Just to recap steam takes 30 %, Epic store takes 12%. That 18% is a good reason not to sell games on steam anymore. Tim Sweeney said that Steam would be profitable at 8% ... I guess it's just a matter of time than another Store will come up with a 8/92 share for devs.
Honestly the whole "Steam would make more at 8%" makes me beg the question "why not just 15?", because it's obvious that as time goes on, the devs want more and more money, which in turn leads to more greed, greed which we already accuse any publisher of doing.
Dokolus if the 30% of steam would go to devs, then they will be less greedy on monetisation, most devs can afford their own platforms, is the customer that doesn’t get accustom to them (see uplay) . Running online stores takes resources and it’s ok to pay those shops, but not 30%
I like your Reviews a lot because of all the details provided (the amount of time you spent in discussing the Game's Combat System is unprecedented to say the least) and the heavy emphasis on Gameplay that isn't present in other review channels like IGN and even Angry Joe.
I wish you could do the same for visually enlightening Games like Gris instead of spending an insane of time expressing your fandom over it's beauty and eye-gasping glory.
FOCUS ON GAMEPLAY!!
GIVE ALL THE INFO WE NEED!!
Keep it up. Your Channel will be wholeheartedly welcomed into my RUclips Subscriptions list soon enough.
Happy Holidays M8.
GRIS is not about the gameplay. It is about the journey and visuals :)
God, how i adore the MUSIC, ARTSTYLE and VOICE ACTING in these games. Like srsly, bless Darren Korb, Jen Zee and especially Logan Cunningham who has a redicilous range in his voices
You know what I hate about Early Access titles like this? It kills the excitement for me. With Bastian and Transistor, I saw the trailers, developed a hype and excitement for the game and then it came out and I loved them. BUT with early access, I don't want to pick up a game like Hades because I'm afraid it'll get stale for me by the time it comes to the full release.
So...now that you're reviewing indie stuff, any chance you'll review ATOM RPG? I'm 3 days into it and I freaking love it, and now that Fallout 76 has been such a total disgrace, I'm betting there are others who'd like an alternative to scratch their post-nuclear-apocalypse itch.
You had me at hit boxes are accurate.... fuck thats one of my biggest gripes with games. Especially skill effects! Where the animations/visuals from the skill are not representative of the damage hit box the skill uses... so uselss.
EDIT: It's bad enough we had to deal with exclusivity between consoles, and consoles/pcs, but now we deal with it between applications on pcs... this is crap. Exclusivity is never a benefit to the consumer, yet we are the ones it directly affects :/
You just dropped "better combat than Dead Cells" like it was a cold hard fact. THAT is a bold claim, but I'd love for it to be true. Dead Cells had EXCELLENT combat, imho.
I personally applaud the move by Supergiant and Epic. Epic could finally challenge Valve and force them to improve the cesspool that Steam currently is. Valve already changed their partnership incentives for games with high sales in response, which just proves the point. Competition forces change, and those changes will ultimately benefit consumers. So while I’m not thrilled loading another launcher on my PC, I’ll happily do it for a great game and the chance to break the monopoly that has allowed Valve to grow complacent.
In for the Switch version.
Why is it exclusive to the epic store? I don't like that, I want to be able to by the game on the platform I like best.
PS: I also had a lot of fun with Deadcells this year. Nearly 100h clocked in ^^
Finally started playing it today and absolutely loved it. This was my first supergiant game and I can definitely see why they have such a great reputation. Everything from music, art style, gameplay, voice acting (which I found later is first time for any of their game so far) was excellent.
Hey guys, I know this is completely unrelated to the review, but I wanted to ask: is it worth buying the Destiny 1 Collection? I’ve always wanted to give it a try as a pure Warframe player.
I always wonder why people praise Transistor, as I feel like it was the low-point for Supergiant after a hit like Bastion. I had to literally pull myself through that game while being disappointed. Maybe I'm just nuts, though.
Epic know if they didn't have the exclusivity deal then it would be largely ignored on their store, a store they wan't to push as a competitor to Steam 2019. The Epic store is new and will develop over time I can imagine, they also matched the Steam refund policy just yesterday so give them a chance.
As Gabe Newell said piracy is a service problem, Hades might be a great game but just looking at Epic's launcher makes me wanna vomit.. it is such a downgrade compared to Steam that I honestly rather pirate a game that's exclusive to their launcher only, than to deal with yet another platform.
I'm not excited to own a digital copy of a game if it's not on steam, not because I'm a fanboy of Valve and Steam, but because that platform makes me proud of my collection I have 99% of my games there and platform delivers a sense of security on top of that I've got all communities at my reach
With Epic's and any other platform it really does not feel any better than just having an icon of pirated game on my desktop.. seriously? what difference does it make? being moral is bullshit I don't care if X dev gets money unless I'm their fan If game is only available on any other platform than Steam I much rather own a physical copy of a game. When product is available on Steam I would feel bad about torrenting it, not because devs don't get their share, but because of lack of superior service
I know I'm not alone, sure Steam takes huge cut, but for 99% of developer's 70% cut is worth much more than even 100% cut on an Epic's platform. Game would have to reach huge popularity to be worth for dev to bring game only on Epic's platform. All what I said mostly applies to small-medium developers without infinite amount of money for marketing
The reason why digital copies are the way to go right now, is because of Steam, what Epic can bring to the table? Their only hope to succeed is to bring devs, ask for much much smaller % and hope their games will reach huge popularity and repeat that 1000 times, and all steam has to do (and already does) is start matching Epic's %
Literally borrowed my friends laptop to play this.. SuperGiant is among one of my favorite devs ever. Bastion, Transistor and Pyre were all incredible games.
I really hope the currency of this game is more rewarding than dead cells cuz DC gives you jack shit for your time it just wore me down to where i gave up for now. You just get destroyed instantly sometimes and its bullshit. Then you get barely any cells to put towards the next unlock. Its a good game but ffs that grind blows
Good review but you made some mistakes.
The yellow bar is armo of the enemy. They only appear when you enter “harder path”, which is shown by a little skull on the item showing what you get in the next room. These rooms will give more resources so you can get stronger easily if you are good/lucky enough. There are boons that would help a lot against armo so it shouldnt be a problem.
The game is fun so far but it still has lot of problems. However devs are working really hard to fix every bugs players have found and reported back to them. Love it. The full game will be out in around a year
I just don’t understand why people hate using different launchers. There is nothing wrong with loading in a different launcher. I use several different launchers and I see no problem. It’s just fucking petty.
Hmm, if it might come to switch then I'll probably wait for that. I don't want to just buy a switch for Pokémon, so this game might make the switch purchase worth it on top of Pokémon next year.
Thanks for highlighting this. I checked it out on the store a bit ago but was hesitant, so thanks for doing this. I gotta ask though....if you support what epic game store is doing with regards to profit sharing, and want them to give steam some much deserved competition, how would you expect them to compete without exclusives? This sounds a bit rhetorical, but I promise I am genuinely asking your opinion. Poor return policy and no reviews are indeed issues, like you said. I just find it curious that people both want them to provide competition to steam for the betterment of the community, yet only begrudgingly use the store to get an exclusive title.
Disagree on the idea that it should be on Steam and GOG too. It completely defeats the purpose of them putting it in Epic for the higher revenue split. If it was on steam most people would get it on there and they’d get little to no benefit from the higher revenue split. Also it being an exclusive means a more favorable promotional deal with Epic’s store. I’m not saying you need to like Epic’s game store but it’s bad business fir an indie like Super Giant games to release it on Steam as well. Promoting a platform that is more favorable for them is better fit their business in the long run. Also 12 launchers is a bit of a hyperbole. The vast majority of people won’t have more than 5. One more launcher isn’t that big a deal when the larger pay off is better competition between the platforms rather than steam having a monopoly while treating indies like garbage.
Supergiant does fantastic work and this looks like more of it. Can't wait to pick this up, either for Switch or PS4 (but preferably Switch). Hopefully Pyre makes it over as well. Haven't given that one a go yet.
Sam Barris Pyre is amazing! One of the best games of 2017 imo. And I’m not even a fan of sport games.
Pyre their best so far (my opinion) and one of the best and most underrated games of 2017.
Should of won some GOTY awards tbh.
I'll get 99% of my games on Switch where possible.
I only get a game on PS4 if it's a big AAA game.
While Doom was a great Switch port, I'll be getting Doom Eternal on PS4 simply because it'll look, run and feel better to play.
You know pyre is on ps4 too right?
I belive epic games just gave a super good deal to these developers to only publish on epic launcher. While I don't like some of the practices of the epicc launcher I must also say I'm glad it exists because it gives us as gamers propably better prices and might bring back some competition since for many years steam has almost been the only big store/launcher/game collection out there for most players. And for me who already had epic installed for the use of their unreal engine I'm exited to see what will come in the future.
It wouldn't surprise me if some people lose patience and buy the game on EPIC for early access, then buy it again on Steam from full release onward!
Hi Skill Up, are you now planning on doing the follow up video since its already out of early access? Would love to see that. Great work by the way
Exclusive to epic launcher? No thanks, i already have 4gigs of launcher software.
Man i love SkillUp passion for good video games, you just dont see that in reviewers now days
Epic Games exclusive... yeah, fuck that. Maybe we'll get it for cheap on gog or steam after the full release.
The Epic games launcher is one the most popular launchers in the world because of Fortnite and there isn't an Everest mountain of Bs to wade through like steam. Monopolies are bad.
Would have wanted this on steam since i don't like the epic store atm, needs a lot of improvements. They seem to be the only one selling journey in the future that i know. But really enjoying Hades great fun and when finished it will be excellent , i hope.
Can't wait to pick this up once it's ported to consoles, I loved Transistor so much and Supergiant always earns my trust and my money!
Kind of bored with this genre as much as I was with the zombie games. Looks good though and grats to people who are getting it. All Diablo-cloned out though.
Looks dope. Going to wait and see what the full release is like. Hopefully they will release it on Steam and other platforms. If it comes to the switch I am definitely picking it up for that, it would be a great platform for it.
I wonder if early access means that we may get a more in depth endgame for this IP. It appears to be set up perfectly for this! And it would be great if it had Diablo type longevity.
I hope they make Achilles into a boss fight, after all the friendship he build up with the main character and he is employed by the hades after all.
In fact I hope I can fight every npc in the future they all seems awesome except medusa she is just adorable.
Too bad I'll never see this game, because it's on a shit anti-consumer platform. Oh well.
Would be great if this game would be available somewhere other than Epic game's store lol, fuck them.
i didn't like transistor from a gameplay perspective. I loved bastion though.
I never play early access. I want to full experience. It's nice to know the game is on the right track, because early access always worries me.
Have you heard of crosscode ? It's really good and i'm surprised by how little coverage it has gotten , or the lack thereof
Sadly, I don't think this game is for me, at least not yet. My favorite thing about Supergiant Games is their emotional stories and since this doesn't seem to have one yet, it's sort of a dealbreaker
I was a litte late getting around to Dead Cells. Picked it up a couple days ago and love it. When I get done playing that I will definitely be checking out Hades in the future.
