The trade-off is that you have to build everything yourself from scratch, without the guardrails that come with higher level languages. You have to know what you're doing when it comes to C, and it's really easy to screw up and introduce memory problems or security issues. I have so much love for this studio. Their passion for their games shows in every choice they make. I feel overjoyed when I see their successes since I can nearly feel how much they love their work.
Commenting a year later, Hades 2 trialer at the Game awards was pretty hyped. Glad to see that such a hard working studio gets to continue their work on such a well loved IP!
Honestly, I’ve been so afraid to play a rogue like. I didn’t know Hades was one till I downloaded it, but I have to say, this is the perfect one for me. It’s interesting every time. And although dying was frustrating at first, once I realized it wasn’t impeding the story and that you were meant to die a lot, I started to have more fun with my runs. Hades might be becoming one of my favorite games if I’m honest
@@seudonimopendiente just a heads up that this video is incorrect and the game is made in C++, not C. Additionally it's built on top of a framework called The Forge, which is a cross-platform toolset that allows developers to deploy games to multiple platforms. This is a _very_ basic explanation, but I'll give it a shot. C is low-level language that gives you direct access to system internals, such as CPU instructions and memory access. Almost all machines and devices you use are running on top of software written in C. It's basically ancient at this point (over 50+ years old) and is the foundation of all software. In the 1980s a newer language called C++ was introduced on top of C with the goal to improve on some of C's limitations without sacrificing its performance and accessibility characteristics. C++ is the primary language used today for a majority of video games.
I feel like every game studio should have this kind of relationship with the community and develop the games together, as a whole. Very insightful video!

It would be interesting to cover Another Metroid returns 2. The guy made ten years to develop it. He made an amazing job better than official Nintendo releases so much that many people see it as almost canon. Plus he was hired as a level designer to Ori and the will of wisps which as we know is one of the best Metroidvanias out there. His story is truly an interesting one
Can't wait for Hades II, I am gonna get the early access and help out as much as possible. The love, dedication and hard work is visible in every aspect of Hades, and I can't wait to help Supergiant with the second game. Knowing how much these people care about making the game the best it can be, while understanding that player feedback and ideas are a crucial part of that - I sincerely want to chip in.
SuperGiants did an epic job with Hades and their hard work shows so much. Hades has become my all time favorite game, because of the love and effort they put into it. The care they put into making Hades as successful as it is, and making it as appealing to a wide range of people shows how much their efforts turned out. I cannot wait to see what they do for Hades 2 and how both story plots merge together to create a bigger world than before.

Years ago, I used to play a little game on IOS called "Hoplite". I find there are many similitudes between the 2 games: - Set in ancient mythological times - The spear build in Hades is a bit like the moves you can do in Hoplite. You can throw the spear, recall it etc. - Last, but not least, you can get favors from gods in both games : more health, new powers etc.
Great video! I love how you talk about the development in such a unique way, love the editing, love how you put faces to these quotes, it's just a very enjoyable viewing. And also, the thing that struck out at me was how attractive the characters looked, it's funny to see that it was intentional.
great video! i think hades is a roguelite, not roguelike though. very subtle but important difference. in hades the story progresses every time you die and you take certain things with you after each run to improve upon your next, which is the definition of roguelite. in roguelike games you start from 0 every single time you die.
No it's wether or not you use tiles to move and other such things. For example Pokemon mystery dungeon is more akin to rogue than most things that would fall under your definition of rogue-like.
Today almost every roguelike is a roguelite, no? People don't want 0 rewards for their runs. Even in Isaac you unlock new items which make your runs easier.
I've been meaning to give Hades a try at some point. After seeing some gameplay and story clips, and after seeing the fascinating process it underwent during development here, has fully convinced me to get it.

Back here watching this in 2024 after the early access release of Hades II. Absolutely fell in love with the first game when it was something I initially didn’t think I’d be drawn to. Now with hundreds of hours in it, it’s one of my all-time favorite games. Really looking forward to being involved with the early access dev process on the sequel!
Thanks for this video, I’m incredibly interested in both the programming behind this game and the artistic direction! This video sums it up nicely. I truly hope one day they release an art book for this game, Jen Zee’s work is an inspiration. Doesn’t seem like it will happen anytime soon though, I suppose art books are incredibly difficult to produce :/ Great video!
I found this game from one random video on RUclips. I stunned byt Zagreus design and voice. Then I played it and become one of my favorite game. Thanks random video on RUclips
I’d love to hear the story of Kentucky Route Zero! It’s an amazing game with interesting dialogue and beautiful music like “Too Late to Love You”. It was a hauntingly beautiful experience to actually choose the lyrics of the song they were playing. Very hard to understand the concept tho cause it’s so abstract..
Very cool video. I didn’t know Hades was an early access title and was worried about Hades 2 being one. But it looks like they did a great job with the first one so I’m excited now!
Okay the fact that the art director of this very diverse and progressive game is named "Jen Zee" *cough cough Gen Z* is absolutely hilarious and i love it

It just really bums me out that Hades will never get more content. What separates the good rogue lites from the great ones is the post-launch support. I would have happily paid more money for DLC from Supergiant. It’s my fave genre of game and I really think the game could’ve printed money for them if they had made more content after launch.
If you ever want to dive into some interesting stories, I highly recommend looking into the franchise Panzer Dragoon series, the ones that were made by Team Andromeda. It is such an interesting and depressing story which I feel is why the world that was created by them feels that much more believable. There is also the story of Trials, the motorcycle game and its crazy ARG. Anywho, great work as always.
The thing is diversity doesn't have to be attractive to have its own right. The other thing is, that claiming that diversity cam somehow be the cause for a piece of media being bad, is an false accusation. Discriminatory in itself, because it strives to make diversity seen as something that somehow can be a bad thing. Like when always when a black person does something horrible all black people are like that, but if a white person does the same it's just one white person within a bunch of individuals. And that's the racist thing in claiming: diversity makes things bad. A false causation
Man Hades has to be the most enjoyable early access I’ve gotten to play. Since 2019 the steam release it was a monthly surprise and as you mentioned the god mentioning new stuff in game was just awesome. ROR2 is a close second for best early access

I didn't even notice Athena and Artemis weren't Greek until I saw this. Never saw them as unGreek in any way to begin with. That's how good the game is.
as a modern Hellenist I love this game and its take on the gods as an all powerful dysfunctional family. And Supergiant gets extra points for using a super unknown minor deity like Zagreus. As stated in the video the ancient Greeks didn't speak too much about Chthonic gods so its nice they did their homework.
I bought this game three times (Switch, EGS, Steam) and after dropping it 12 hours in twice out of frustration, I finally finished it on my third try yesterday.
I just started playing this. As an artist, everything in this game is so pleasing visually. All the little details and bright colors are super cool, and playing makes me inspired to draw.
I don't like most of the enemy designs, they don't look or feel greek mythology at all! Also too big and flashy effects after each attack with numbers appearing on top of them, just ruins this game for me....
@@hater2764 Supergiant probably didn’t want to make it completely historically accurate. Since Greek myths are just myths, there’s a lot of creative wiggle room. There have been so many media and video game depictions of Greek mythology already that having the same old designs may have felt boring to the majority of players. As for the flashiness of attacks, it’s a roguelike game. That kind of thing is pretty common in the genre.
Most of my favorite games either had an alpha phase or are indie. Minecraft, hollow knight, hades, Celeste, bg3, and so many more. Getting player feedback is invaluable when making games
For the record, I’m liberal as they come. Despite that, the fact that the decision to diversify the cast was made by someone called Jen Zee is just… *chef’s kiss*
? i thought liberals beg for diversity. you can have diversity that's fine, just don't force it in. I like how she wanted to keep the themes of the characters. don't just drop in a gay guy or ffs don't make thanatos gay. and their fking discord server is "progressive" (more like regressive). I know it's part of the process, but it can feel daunting sometimes. Been meaning to leave comments on your other videos, just keep forgetting lol.
Thanks, Rob! Yeah, I was very surprised to read about all the Theseus stuff and how it was titled Minos in the beginning. They definitely went through some struggles and changes. I have massive respect for writers since it's something I really struggle with myself :P And no worries, I'm just happy to know you're still enjoying the videos!
Dude, your content is masterpiece! Can't imagine the amount of effort put into it! You're amazing
Much appreciated! A lot of effort goes into every single video, but I love making them!

Shout-out to the engineers who probably worked tirelessly to rewrite that engine. That shit is hard work.
whats is native c?
My sister and I just started playing Hades last month. It's an amazing game and I never knew how much went into the development process. Thank you for explaining the dev process here.
I've seen a few of your videos before but I wanted to comment because your editing is superb quality. The fact that you matched the game text styles only proves that you dedicated so much time and effort into every video. Congratulations on the amazing result!
My pleasure and thank you very much for the kind words! It's always a fun process to match the style of the game so I'm glad people seem to like it :D
Been following Supergiant games since Bastion and i am so excited for their future releases ❤️💕
Honestly man, you deserve more credit. I love every video you make, and the quality of your content deserves a million subscriber audience at least. I know you’ll get there one day, so keep up the great work!
Thanks for the kind words, really appreciate it! And will do, next video is in the works!
this game is such a masterpiece of game design, “perfect” is a big word but i’ve never seen any game get as close to it as Hades has
It's kind of incredible how well they were able to execute on what they wanted it to be.
It's on my list ;) Probably not going to happen anytime soon since I've got some other videos in the works first, but yes, one day it will happen!
Amazing walkthrough of SuperGiant and Hades - thanks for all the hard work Glen ✨
My pleasure, glad to hear you enjoyed it!
I looked at your subscriber count, misread it as 760k, and STILL thought you were underrated.
I watched most of your videos and haven't regreted even one, please continue uploading at this high quality.
Much appreciated! And will do, the next video is in the works!
Whoaaa I didn’t even realize lol
The editing in this video is fantastic!!! Every single bit of the visuals fits the game!!!
Years ago, I used to play a little game on IOS called "Hoplite". I find there are many similitudes between the 2 games:
- Set in ancient mythological times
- The spear build in Hades is a bit like the moves you can do in Hoplite.
Thank you!
The permanent upgrades make little difference though.
@@Gaze73 Almost. I'm not exactly 100% on top of the genre, but pretty sure Noita is an actual roguelike
Always excited to see a new video released on your channel, great job!
Much appreciated!
I've been meaning to give Hades a try at some point. After seeing some gameplay and story clips, and after seeing the fascinating process it underwent during development here, has fully convinced me to get it.
Your videos are always so interesting, I love watching them.
The way the esthetic of the video match the one of the game is so impressive too!
Thank you for your work
My pleasure, happy to hear you enjoy the videos!
you did a very good job at not spoiling almost anything
obviously except for the core game concept
I gotta say, this is one of the best games ever made. I've just started playing it and by the Gods it's so gooooood, you can tell how much love they put on this game, how much depth and care there is. Such a well crafted and detailed game, the devs deserve the world.
I loved this history! I just started playing last month and wasn't aware of almost any of this! Great video.
Thank you William, glad to hear you enjoyed it!
I've been watching your videos in the background as I draw, they're so interesting and really good. The editing in this one is of such high quality that I couldn't even look away. Crazy to me that the video is only at 16k views, it's amazing. Time to binge more x]
Wow, thank you very much for the kind words! I hope you enjoy the other videos as well :D
This is some of the most brilliant editing I've ever seen. Holy heck this channel is underrated!
Glad to hear you like the editing, by far the part I put the most time in so it's always nice to hear when people appreciate it!
Great video, the attention to details of making the texts in Hades style, congrats
Thank you, glad you liked it!
2:08 And that’s a question I had answered, now that the sequel is coming out.
It now makes sense why Hades won a lot of prizes for its storytelling. Congrats on the video!
To whoever made the subtitles, thanks a lot, I can watch this at school without having to blast the volume
I found this game from one random video on RUclips. I stunned byt Zagreus design and voice. Then I played it and become one of my favorite game. Thanks random video on RUclips
Have you seen the Hades 2 trailer?
Such a quality video wow….very impressed. So glad hades did well…they deserve it & Greg k has come such a long way remember his older gamespot reviews
Glen your videos are getting better and better keep it up and your style of editing is my favourite
Much appreciated and will do!
Your editing is amazingly detailed! I have a feeling you're going to really blow up soon
Wow, another incredible video with sublime editing. Great job man, I hope your channel keeps on growing.
Much appreciated, glad to hear you liked it!
Okay the fact that the art director of this very diverse and progressive game is named "Jen Zee" *cough cough Gen Z* is absolutely hilarious and i love it
Algorithm brought me to this video, and I raced to the comments convinced this had to have been pointed out. It was a real mockumentary moment.
Excited for Hades 2 and interested in how early access will loon

The Greeks and Pagans I know are some of the most racist people I've met, more so than me.
I don't know why you think Greeks would appreciate having their Gods and cultural icons portrayed as Africans.
Theseus: NO FAIR THE GAME WAS SUPPOSED TO BE ABOUT ME AND ASTERIUS!!
Zagreus: Should've had a richer story for gameplay.
Theseus: *Mounts Macedonian Tau Lambda and puts on mask*
It just really bums me out that Hades will never get more content. What separates the good rogue lites from the great ones is the post-launch support. I would have happily paid more money for DLC from Supergiant. It’s my fave genre of game and I really think the game could’ve printed money for them if they had made more content after launch.
We got a sequel!
“The ancient Greeks were afraid of Hades, and so did not tell many stories about him.”
“Few tales are told of Hades…”
If you ever want to dive into some interesting stories, I highly recommend looking into the franchise Panzer Dragoon series, the ones that were made by Team Andromeda. It is such an interesting and depressing story which I feel is why the world that was created by them feels that much more believable. There is also the story of Trials, the motorcycle game and its crazy ARG. Anywho, great work as always.
Wow, I used to not like this game but after knowing all this I’m buying it right now 🤯what an incredible video, what incredible devs
Apart for the clear passion and involvement of the whole team, it's showing how diversity, done right, can be interesting and attractive.
What an amazing and informative video! Love this game and love seeing behind the scenes-without it we’d have no product and we can all learn from others. I’m gonna go watch you other videos now 😁
im very lucky to have met most of the people at super giant, and all such nice people. Jen Zee is prob one of the coolest people i have ever met and for that and just the beauty of the art an story in their games, i will buy any game this studio puts out.
Looking forward to the upcoming sequel. And yes it's already in the making
A year ago we saw the Hecate model and it's only now being used! They planned this way in advance!
This was very informative. And this game deserves such a video. Thanks a bunch 😊
My pleasure, glad you enjoyed it!
Nice work!
It's amazing to see them making critical decision during early development.
2:07 "Even though the studio has never made a direct sequel to any of their games, it's not something they're opposed to doing; they just don't want to do it unless the time and circumstances are right."
THE TIME AND CIRCUMSTANCES ARE RIGHT, GAMERS!!!
Also the soundtrack in this game is INCREDIBLE.
I didn't even notice Athena and Artemis weren't Greek until I saw this. Never saw them as unGreek in any way to begin with.
That's how good the game is.
I find it really ironic that Theseus went from being the center of the plot to the most hollow character/plot device in the game.
Great video. After this one it's only logical to make one about dead cells since these games are compared so much.
Thank you! Dead Cells is on my list but the next video will be about a different game.
Aw dude the Theseus and labyrinth idea is PERFECT. I hope they come up with like a dlc or sequel with this concept
as a modern Hellenist I love this game and its take on the gods as an all powerful dysfunctional family.
Spoiler, they figured out which game finally warranted a sequel.
Supergiant is a rare gem. And that term is thrown around a lot. But SG definitely deserves that moniker
Would love to see a video on Arboria. There must definitely be a fun team behind that.
Most of my favorite games either had an alpha phase or are indie. Minecraft, hollow knight, hades, Celeste, bg3, and so many more. Getting player feedback is invaluable when making games
I definitely think Hades is among the best Rogue-likes, right up there with Binding of Isaac.
Kind of insane how far its come, from the original builds known as Minos all the way to Supergiant's first ever sequel. Crazy.
I would love to see you cover Night in the Woods! Just finished it a few days ago and I love it.
It's on my list ;)

For the record, I’m liberal as they come. Despite that, the fact that the decision to diversify the cast was made by someone called Jen Zee is just… *chef’s kiss*
? i thought liberals beg for diversity. you can have diversity that's fine, just don't force it in. I like how she wanted to keep the themes of the characters. don't just drop in a gay guy or ffs don't make thanatos gay. and their fking discord server is "progressive" (more like regressive).
